I am using jenkins 1.520, i have 500mb in /tmp on linux (RHEL6 host), 500mb is plenty of space for our current build size and number of projects, how can i make this message go away and have my master node be online?
I looked around for bugs that apply to this version, did not find any. I tried previous suggestions found in stackoverflow, do not seem to work or simply do not apply.

You can configure the Free Disk Space and Free Temp Space thresholds in the Node configuration, http://jenkins:8080/computer/configure (or from the Jenkins main page -> Build Executor Status -> Configure).

I have four separate pipelines that all run on the same node. Recently, I've been getting errors that look like this:
Disk space is too low. Only 0.315GB left on /var/jenkins.
I've already reconfigured the pipelines to get rid of old logs and builds after 7 days. Aside from this, are there any plugins or shell commands I can run post-build to keep my disk space free?
This is one of those problems that can be fixed/monitoried in multiple ways.
If you're willing to you can set up something like datadog or nagios to monitor your system and alert you when something is starting to fill up your /var/jenkins.
You can also set up a cron that checks and emails you when something is starting to fill up.
But if you'd like to figure why it's filling up, it's possible that your /var partition is too small, but without seeing your disk partition layout it's hard to give a better answer.
I Have faced same issue with the one of the jenkins node
solution: Ssh to your slave and do this df -h, it will show disk info, and available space in /tmp and increase tmp size by
sudo mount -o remount /tmp
When I am trying to build the docker image I am getting out of disk space error and after investigating I find the following:
df -h

This will clean up all images, containers, networks, volumes not used. We generally try to clean up old images when creating a new one but you could also have this run as a scheduled task on your docker server every day.
use command - docker system prune -a
This will clean up total Reclaimable Size for Images, Network & Volume..... This will remove all images related reclaimable space which are not associated with any running container.....
Run docker system df command to view Reclaimable memory
In case there is some Reclaimable memory then if above command does not work in first go then run the same command twice then it should cleaned up....
I have been experiencing this behavior almost on daily basis.....
Planning to report this bug to Docker Community but before that want to reproduce this bug with new release to see if this has been fixed or not with latest one....
Open up the docker settings -> Resources -> Advanced and up the amount of Hard Drive space it can use under disk image size.
If you are using linux, then most probably docker is filling up the directory /var/lib/docker/containers, because it is writing container logs to <CONTAINER_ID>-json.log file under this directory. You can use the command cat /dev/null > <CONTAINER_ID>-json.log to clear this file or you can set the maximum log file size be editing /etc/sysconfig/docker. More information can be found in this RedHat documentation. In my case, I have created a crontab to clear the contents of the file every day at midnight. Hope this helps!
NB:
You can find the docker containers with ID using the following command
sudo docker ps --no-trunc
You can check the size of the file using the command
du -sh $(docker inspect --format='{{.LogPath}}' CONTAINER_ID_FOUND_IN_LAST_STEP)
Nothing works for me. I change the disk images max size in Docker Settings, and just after that it free huge size.
Going to leave this here since I couldn't find the answer.
Go to the Docker GUI -> Prefereces -> Reset -> Uninstall
Completely uninstall Docker.
Then install it fresh using this link
My docker was using 20GB of space when building an image, after fresh install, it uses 3-4GB max. Definitely helps!
Also, if you using a macbook, have look at ~/Library/Containers/docker*
This folder for me was 60 GB and was eating up all the space on my mac! Even though this may not be relevant to the question, I believe it is vital for me to leave this here.
Today's day one with Docker, and I've been overjoyed (cough) to find that docker is taking 5-10 times as much space to store the images on my hard drive as the images themselves. A visual inspection in baobab shows very similar (though not perfectly identical) folder structure repeated among the five subfolders of /var/lib/docker.
A 1.8G docker image takes 18G on my disk. If I rebuild the images from scratch using the same sources, Docker barely increases disk storage, plus 1G give or take--so at least it's deduplicating sources in that sense. Once I remove the images storage goes down to 400K.
I thought maybe there were a bunch of different sources that had to be differentially compared to get to the final version of the image I had downloaded earlier, so I downloaded the 18.04 Ubuntu image (79M) next to verify if that was the case, but even so, baobab is back to showing 401 MB under /var/lib/docker/. What the heck?!? Am I missing something, or is Docker being dreadfully inefficient? Is there an evil BTRFS compression kernel bug? Does Docker hate disk encryption? Please tell me Docker doesn't just laugh in your face and fill up your hard drive instead of anti-de-duplicating your data.

Docker on Btrfs uses a lot of snapshots. Btrfs snapshots use copy on write so that when they're changed, only the changed parts use new disk space.
But regular disk tools don't know about snapshots and count the space as a full copy for each snapshot.
Use btrfs fi du -s /var/lib/docker to use the Btrfs tools to measure it.
I am on docker version 1.11.2. I am trying to docker save an image but i get
an error.
i did docker images to see the size of the image and the result is this

The server I am on is low on space but it has 2.2 GB available but when I run docker save myimage:0.0.1-SNAPSHOT > img.tar i get
write /dev/stdout: no space left on device
I removed all exited containers and dangling volumes in hopes of making it work but nothing helped.
You have no enough space left on device. So free some more space or try gzip on the fly:
docker save myimage:0.0.1-SNAPSHOT | gzip > img.tar.gz
To restore it, docker automatically realizes that is gziped:
docker load < img.tar.gz
In such a situation where you can't free enough space locally you might want to use storage available over a network connection. A little bit more difficult to set up are NFS or Samba.
The easiest approach could be piping the output through netcat, but keep in mind that this is at least by default unencrypted.
But as long as your production server is that low on space you are vulnerable to a bunch of other problems.
Until you can provide more free space I wouldn't create files locally, zipped or not. You could bring important services down when you run out of free space.
The general scenario is that we have a cluster of servers and we want to set up virtual clusters on top of that using Docker.
For that we have created Dockerfiles for different services (Hadoop, Spark etc.).
Regarding the Hadoop HDFS service however, we have the situation that the disk space available to the docker containers equals to the disk space available to the server. We want to limit the available disk space on a per-container basis so that we can dynamically spawn an additional datanode with some storage size to contribute to the HDFS filesystem.
We had the idea to use loopback files formatted with ext4 and mount these on directories which we use as volumes in docker containers. However, this implies a large performance loss.
I found another question on SO (Limit disk size and bandwidth of a Docker container) but the answers are almost 1,5 years old which - regarding the speed of development of docker - is ancient.

You can specify runtime constraints on memory and CPU, but not disk space.
The ability to set constraints on disk space has been requested (issue 12462, issue 3804), but isn't yet implemented, as it depends on the underlying filesystem driver.
This feature is going to be added at some point, but not right away. It's a bit more difficult to add this functionality right now because a lot of chunks of code are moving from one place to another. After this work is done, it should be much easier to implement this functionality.
Please keep in mind that quota support can't be added as a hack to devicemapper, it has to be implemented for as many storage backends as possible, so it has to be implemented in a way which makes it easy to add quota support for other storage backends.
Update August 2016: as shown below, and in issue 3804 comment, PR 24771 and PR 24807 have been merged since then. docker run now allow to set storage driver options per container
$ docker run -it --storage-opt size=120G fedora /bin/bash
This (size) will allow to set the container rootfs size to 120G at creation time.
This option is only available for the devicemapper, btrfs, overlay2, windowsfilter and zfs graph drivers
