I'm developing a framework for iOS apps that allows interfacing with custom BLE devices made by my company. We're planning to distribute the framework binary with public headers to clients. I've already designed the client facing interface, but it's lacking a major feature: notification on various different status conditions. That is, when the framework starts scanning for devices, connects to a device, reads data, uploads to our backend, etc, there is currently no way for client apps to know.
This has been fine for local testing, but before releasing, it would be best to add some functionality to allow clients to build a UI that updates based on these various status conditions. I'm not entirely sure of what the current, best way to do this is. I'm aware I can create an NSNotificationCenter and post notifications for each of these status changes, but I'm not sure if there is some better way of doing this? Should I accept a user callback? Expose some sort of listener protocol and ability register listeners? I'm sure others have solved this problem before, what have you found works well for iOS?
Use NSNotificationCenter for one to many communication, it notifies all the objects, which register to event, without knowing who throws it.
Use protocol and delegates for one to one object communication.
As per my experience you should go with delegates, it will be clean implementation and you can also define optional and required protocol.The the global class on client side can use this delegates, and update.

Let's say I want to build a SDK that communicates with a server. I don't want any one (not even the app that implements the SDK) to intercept and look at my requests/responses.
If I'd use a common lib like AFNetworking it would be possible to look at all requests i.e by registering a NSURLProtocol.
I'm assuming that this would be harder to do if I would use i.e CFNetworking to perform my request/response handling? Or am I missing something? Would it be possible to intercept that traffic as well?
Using non NSURLConnection based classes, especially C low level classes (because NSIn/OutStream can be swizzled) like CFNetwork's CFStream, would make life harder for a potential curious developer. However, it will never stop a determined one. Your framework could, for example, be decompiled, although that's not a trivial task, which means many will quit even before starting, if the information is not worthwhile.
I am trying to build an offline synchronization capability into my iOS App and would like to get some feedback/advice from the community on the strategy and best practice to be followed to do the same. The app details are as follows:
The app shows a digital catalog to users and allows them to perform actions like creating and placing orders, among others.
Currently the app only works when online, and we have APIs for all actions like viewing the catalog, creating/placing orders which return JSON data.
We would like to provide offline/synchronization capability to users, through which users can view the catalog and create/place orders while offline, and when they come online the order details will be synchronized and updated to our server.
We would also like to pull the latest data from the server, and have the app keep itself up to date in case of catalog changes or order changes that happened at the Server while the app was offline.
Can you guys help me to come with the best design and approach for handling this kind of functionality?
I have done something similar just in the beginning of this year. After I read about NSOperationQueue and NSOperation I did a straight forward approach:
Whenever an object is changed/added/... in my local database, I add a new "sync"-operation to the queue and I do not care about, if the app is online or offline (I added a reachability observer which either suspended the queue or takes it back working; of course, I do re-queueing if an error occurs (lost network during sync)). The operation itself reads/writes the database and does the networking stuff. My ViewController use a NSFetchedResultsController (with delegate=self) to get callbacks on changes. In some cases I needed some extra local data (it is about counting objects), where I have used NSManagedObjectContextObjectsDidChangeNotification.
Furthermore, I have used Multi-Context CoreData which sounded quite reasonable to use (I have only two contexts).
To get notified about changes from your server, I believe that iOS 7 has something new for you.
On the server side, you should read a little for the actual approach you want to go for: i.e. Data Synchronization by Dan Grover or Developing Android REST Client Applications (of course there are many more good articles out there).
Caution: you might be disappointed when you expect an easy solution. Your requirement is not unusual, but the solution might become more complex than you expect - depending on the "business rules" and other reasonable requirements. If you intelligently restrict your requirements you may find a solution which you can implement yourself, otherwise you may also consider to use a commercial product.
I could imagine, that if you design the business logic such that it takes an offline state into account and exposes this explicitly in the business logic, you may find a solution which you can implement yourself with moderate effort. What I mean by this is for example, when a user creates an order, it is initially in "not committed" stated. The order will only be committed when there is access to the server and if the server gives the "OK" that this order can actually be placed by this user. The server may also deny the order, sending corresponding messages to the user.
There are probably quite a few subtle issues that may arise due to the requirement of eventual consistency.

I am building a remote app which is receiving different states of its accessory. It is receiving things like: power state on/off, volume state 5, equalizer setting jazz, etc. and has nothing more to do than map theses states into the UI with selected or unselected states and send changes done back to the accessory.
About the app architecture:
The app is connected with it's accessory as illustrated in Apples EADemo project using the external accessory framework.
The UI is build within non-repeating customized UITableViewCell full of UIButtons. When starting the app a data model class will receive all current states from the examples EADSessionController and has to communicate theses states to the UI (the cells directly rather than the UITableViewController) with one of the mentioned patterns. This will be a stand alone, one-page app looking like a real remote.
Thinking of NSNotification, delegates and KVO (key-value-observing) I am trying to figure out which of these patterns I should use for this special approach?
Any answer on why choosing one of them and a brief description on how to implement would be appreciated. If your answer will be KVO please give some more insights since I never used this pattern so far.
It really depends.
The most loosely coupled one is to use NSNotification and NSNotificationCenter, as the instance which post the notification does not necessarily have knowledge about the observer, and there can be more than one observer.
The delegate pattern is a little more rigid, and there could usually be only one delegate object that receives a message. If the UITableViewController in your project is the only instance that handles a message(, or it would properly propagate the message to other components), it is still OK.
The KVO pattern requires more precisely designed observation relationship. You will have and have to look after exactly how the KVO is implemented. And KVO also allows one-to-many observation. The down side of KVO is if the observing relationship is dynamic and transient, you must take much more care about how these objects were torn down, or you could get a lot of crashes like sending updates to a dealloc'ed instance, etc.
If you are working on a library which would be delivered to a 3rd party to use, perhaps NSNotification would be the first choice.
I'm making a program for IOS for the first time. I never had a iPhone so I don't really get how it works...
I want to make my system able to call a webservice on the background and depending in the answer show a notification.
How can I do this?
I read on the Internet that I can push notifications to the phone, however that won't solve my problem because I want my server to track the user position, so it need the user to silently tell the server it's gps coordinates.

I will suggest building the app first to run in the foreground. I will assume you already understand how to use the GPS, so will not go into detail on that.
First off, you will need to write the server backend and app pretty much simultaneously. There are many choices for writing the server backend language wise. I prefer python, others ruby on rails. You want to build a REST API for the server that the iDevice can talk to with simple HTTP protocol.
You must decide on the API. You must think about what kind of data you will want to send and receive and how you will wrap the data. Also what HTTP protocols will you be using for specific requests, like GET POST etc. Furthermore, you will have to decide at what URL's on the server will it be useful to GET or POST to depending on the data you want to send or receive. I would suggest you use JSON to wrap your data. It is quite intuitive and easy to encode and decode.
Next you will have to decide how to talk to the server in iOS. There are many great third party libraries that dress up NSURLConnection or you can use NSURLConnection itself (sometimes a bit tedious). I personally like to use AFNetworking. It will do the JSON decoding and encoding for you which is a big bonus.
Finally, once you have the two communicating with how you want and with the data you want, now time to dress it up. You can allow your app to run in the background and collect GPS data and send it. You can also use the notification center to display information it gets from the server in the background.

I have a common question, I hope it is ok to ask it here.
I have a project, where I should develop a small appliation for BlackBerry. I know Java ME is the platform to do that (Browser and Widget are other opstion).
What I need to do is a samll application which pops-up after every call and asks the user if he wants to save(assign) this conversation (only the duration in minutes of the phone call is important) in his time-tracking database. He can click NO, but after it, he can start my application and see all unassigned phone calls and still he can assign them in the time-tracking db. This should happen offline and than be synchronized with the server via online connection.
My question now:
What APIs are to be used, for handling with the phone-calls?
Are there some downsides in this kind of application, which I newby can not see at first?
What about the different devices?

That should definitely be doable, look at the PhoneListener interface to check when the phone call disconnects. What I would do is write the application as a system module, that will run in the background on startup. You can use an alternate entry point so that when the user clicks on your icon the application will create a GUI.
Edit: By the way BlackBerry uses an extended version of J2ME. You can ignore all the RIM specific extensions if you want and develop an app that will (theoretically) work on any J2ME device but you won't be able to use a lot of nice features including the PhoneListener interface. I doubt you'll be able to create this specific application with J2ME alone.
