Why doesn't ReentrantLock lock in a Jenkins Pipeline? - jenkins

I cannot seem to get this concurrence pattern to work in my Jenkins Pipeline script as intended. I have simplified the scenario as much as possible and the result still makes no sense. Here is the entire Jenkinsfile:
import java.util.concurrent.locks.ReentrantLock
// create lock and index vars to make sure concurrent threads write different output files
shellLock = new ReentrantLock()
shellIndex = 0
def doIt() {
shellLock.lock()
def threadShellIndex = ++shellIndex
if (threadShellIndex == 1) {
sh("rm -rf shell")
sh("mkdir shell")
}
shellLock.unlock()
sh "touch shell/${threadShellIndex}"
}
node {
checkout scm
runs = [
"1": { doIt() },
"2": { doIt() },
]
parallel runs
}
This does not, as I expect, remove and replace the "shell" directory before both runs proceed to create a file in it. Instead, the console output is:
[Pipeline] parallel
[Pipeline] { (Branch: 1)
[Pipeline] { (Branch: 2)
[Pipeline] sh
[Pipeline] sh
[1] + rm -rf shell
[Pipeline] sh
[2] + touch shell/2
touch: cannot touch ‘shell/2’: No such file or directory
[Pipeline] }
Failed in branch 2
[1] + mkdir shell
[Pipeline] }
Failed in branch 1
[Pipeline] // parallel
[Pipeline] }
[Pipeline] // node
[Pipeline] End of Pipeline

How do I get run 2 to wait until run 1 has recreated the directory?

It seems that the reason ReentrantLock has no effect is that pipeline groovy doesn't actually multithread. It uses a single thread to host multiple "green" threads.
From https://github.com/jenkinsci/workflow-cps-plugin:
All program logic is run inside a “CPS VM thread”, which is just a Java thread pool that can run binary methods and figure out which continuation to do next. The parallel step uses “green threads” (also known as coöperative multitasking): it records logical thread (~ branch) names for various actions, but does not literally run them simultaneously.
Since all calls are in the same thread, ReentrantLock re-enters.
In my case, I was able to get around the need to lock with the use of AtomicInteger and some symlink cleverness around re-creating the directory.
import java.util.concurrent.atomic.AtomicInteger
shellCounter = new AtomicInteger()
#NonCPS
def getNextShellCounter() {
return shellCounter.incrementAndGet()
}
...
def threadShellIndex = getNextShellCounter()
// concurrency-safe creation of output dir and removal of previous
def shellDir = "shell.${currentBuild.number}"
sh """#!/bin/bash +x
mkdir -p ${shellDir}
ln -sfn ${shellDir} shell
rm -rf shell.foo `ls -d shell.* | sed -e '/^${shellDir}\$/d' `
"""
With the way threading works here, a simple ++ might have functioned the same, but better safe than sorry.

Read workspace file in jenkins script

on an old jenkins (2.187) I have a script that take all file of our git repository.
node {
stage('checkout spring-cloud-config') {
dir('config') {
checkout scm
}
}
stage('csv -> yml') {
def files = new File("${workspace}/config/security").listFiles()
for(int i = 0; i < files.size(); i ++){
...
}
This script work fine but we have to migrate on newest Jenkins version.
But this script don't work on our new jenkins (2.319).

Is Groovy has been updated or a jenkins plugin missing ?
Thanks for youy help
So i found it. I use an agent on Azure VM with docker. I have to use proxy to access internet.

How to solve the Jenkins' java.nio.file.AccessDeniedException on a remote node?

I created a sandbox project and want to run its declarative pipeline on a remote slave/node/agent. I see, that the SSH connection between Jenkins and the slave is working. Jenkins can login on the remove machine (as user ec2-user). But the execution ends up in an exception: java.nio.file.AccessDeniedException: /srv/www/htdocs/sandbox#tmp.
The agent's root directory (where Jenkins creates the remoting.jar) is /srv/www/htdocs/jenkins-agents. The project's root directory (passed to the pipeline as parameter) is /srv/www/htdocs/sandbox. But Jenkins seems to try creating a new folder: /srv/www/htdocs/sandbox#tmp. And that cannot work, since the parent folder /srv/www/htdocs has some access recrictions and creating new directories in it is only allowed for root / sudo users.
Why does Jenkins try to create this #tmp folder? How to avoid this behavior and get it working?

See Jenkins Issue 52750 for more details.
Short summary: the #tmp directories are created by the sh step to record internal logs etc.
Jenkins assumes that the agent has full control of the directory it is running in.
The recommendation in that issue is to use a script that runs in a Jenkins workspace and deploys from there rather than trying to manipulate the target directory directly.
This will also allow you to handle file system errors/permissions.
Opening up permissions to world readable and world writable is a bad idea. Especially on a directory that serves as a DocumentRoot for a web server.
The solution is to make the parent of the workspace folder writable for Jenkins, or speaking more precisely, for the user, the Jenkins logs on the remote machine with. Here is a very simple (but insecure) way to do this (for the workspace folder /path/parent/project and the temp folder /path/parent/project#tmp):
$ chmod 777 /path/parent/
I created a folder in / opt
sudo mkdir /opt/deploy_jenkins
and later set permissions
sudo chmod -R a+rw deploy_jenkins/

How to make a parallel wrapper in jenkins pipeline

I want to run steps in parallel and find out which one failed. The problem with parallel is after the run you don't know which run step failed. So I thought that id use sh with returnStatus:true to set a reference instead of using ugly try catch blocks.
tests = (0 == sh( script:"touch tests; ls -l tests", returnStatus:true ))
but wrap that up so it looks more like this.
wrapStep("touch icc; ls -l icc", passByRef, 'icc')
if ( passByRef.icc ) {do stuff}
that makes the pipeline code neater because all your build state can be represented in one object with properties.
This demo scripted pipeline demonstrates this concept working.
class SuccessType {
boolean icc
boolean gcc
boolean tests
}
def wrapStep(String cmd, Object reference, String key){
reference[key] = 0 == sh( script:cmd, returnStatus:true )
return reference[key]
}
node {
def passByRef = new SuccessType()
sh "rm -f *" // remove files from the workspace
passByRef.tests = 0 == sh( script:"touch tests; ls -l tests", returnStatus:true )
wrapStep("touch icc; ls -l icc", passByRef, 'icc')
wrapStep("touch foo; ls -l gcc", passByRef, 'gcc')
println "tests state is " + passByRef.tests
println "icc state is " + passByRef.icc
println "gcc state is " + passByRef.gcc
}
But I cant get this to work in parallel. Doing this
parallel(
'icc' : wrapStep('build icc', passByRef, 'icc'),
'gcc' : wrapStep('build gcc', passByRef, 'gcc')
)
Blows up in an exception:

Ive tried a lot but I'm out of ideas. Does anyone know how to overcome this ?
Edit : the demo will need Groovy Sandbox unchecked else it will complain about not allowing static method calls.
wrap the parallel blocks with closures

Create a file with some content using Groovy in Jenkins pipeline

I am trying to create a file called groovy1.txt with the content "Working with files the Groovy way is easy."
Note: I don't want to use the shell to create this file, instead I want to use Groovy to achieve this.
I have following script in my Jenkins pipeline.
node {
def file1 = new File('groovy1.txt')
file1.write 'Working with files the Groovy way is easy.\n'
sh 'ls -l'
// Expecting the file groovy1.txt should present with the content mentioned above
}
But it is throwing FileNotFound (permission denied) error as below

Jenkins Pipeline provides writeFile step that can be used to write a file inside job's workspace.
Take a look at following example:
node {
writeFile file: 'groovy1.txt', text: 'Working with files the Groovy way is easy.'
sh 'ls -l groovy1.txt'
sh 'cat groovy1.txt'
}
Running this pipeline scripts generates following output:
[Pipeline] node
Running on Jenkins in /var/jenkins_home/workspace/test-pipeline
[Pipeline] {
[Pipeline] writeFile
[Pipeline] sh
[test-pipeline] Running shell script
+ ls -l groovy1.txt
-rw-r--r-- 1 jenkins jenkins 42 Jul 8 16:38 groovy1.txt
[Pipeline] sh
[test-pipeline] Running shell script
+ cat groovy1.txt
Working with files the Groovy way is easy.[Pipeline] }
[Pipeline] // node
[Pipeline] End of Pipeline
Finished: SUCCESS
Using Java File
As Jon S mentioned in the comment, Java new File("${env.WORKSPACE}/groovy1.txt") will work only if your node step is executed on master node - if it gets executed on slave node then your pipeline code will fail. You can check following Stack Overflow thread for more information:
In jenkins job, create file using system groovy in current workspace

Simple Jenkins pipeline file breaks in docker

I am running Jenkins on my OSX machine. My system was working fine last 2 weeks ago and I can't figure out what might have changed. I am running a super simple script to limit what I am doing to try to determine the problem but I am out of ideas. If anyone knows where to look next I would appreciate it.
From what I can tell the docker command is running just fine. But the pipeline is breaking possibly when it is trying to enter the running docker container??? How can I confirm this and how can I see if there is a problem with my Jenkins, Docker, or system in general.
Here is the error:

Here is my Jenkins file I got off the Jenkins website
pipeline {
agent {
docker { image 'node:7-alpine' }
}
stages {
stage('Test') {
steps {
sh 'node --version'
}
}
}
}
Check your PATH when the Jenkins pipeline does execute itself, and see if you have installed Jenkins plugins recently.
For instance, palantir/gradle-docker issue 162 mentions
I'm also experiencing this and it seems to be because the PATH environment variable running under Gradle's Exec plugin (which this plugin uses to shell out to Docker) does not include /usr/local/bin.
In my case, I installed Docker using Homebrew which placed it there.
Check also JENKINS-43294 regarding master and nodes:
I've found that you can easily work around this bug by using the pipeline plugin, and using the docker.image("some image").inside {} function.
Just place that inside the proper node('some label'){} and it will run on the desired node.
