Updating UITextField.text when hitting button - swift - ios

So I define my UITextField, and call it in my viewDidLoad function. From there I also call a UIButton that when pressed it reads the value of the text field as 'print(myTextField.text!). If I change the value in the text field again and hit the button, the value of myTextField.text! is still the same as before. Here is my text field and here is my button, im not sure how to implement an update call. My question is how can I read the updated value and why doesn't it update in the first place?
let myTextField: UITextField = {
let UTextFieldDesign = UITextField()
UTextFieldDesign.textColor = .black
return UTextFieldDesign
}()
let loginButton: UIButton = {
let LButton = UIButton(type: .system)
LButton.layer.cornerRadius = 25.0
LButton.setTitleColor(.white, for: .normal)
LButton.setTitle(NSLocalizedString("Check Text", comment: ""), for: .normal)
LButton.titleLabel?.font = .systemFont(ofSize: 20)
LButton.backgroundColor = LoginButtonColor
LButton.addTarget(self, action: #selector(loginAction), for: .touchUpInside)
return LButton
}()
override func viewDidLoad() {
super.viewDidLoad()
self.hideKeyboardWhenTap()
setupMyTextField() //this just adds the constraints
setupLoginButton()
#objc func loginAction() {
print(myTextField.text!)
}
fileprivate func setupMyTextField() {
view.addSubview(myTextField)
myTextField.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
myTextField.topAnchor.constraint(equalTo: view.safeAreaLayoutGuide.topAnchor, constant: 20).isActive = true
myTextField.leftAnchor.constraint(equalTo: view.leftAnchor, constant: 20).isActive = true
myTextField.rightAnchor.constraint(equalTo: view.rightAnchor, constant: -20).isActive = true
}
fileprivate func setupLoginButton() {
view.addSubview(loginButton)
loginButton.anchors(top: myTextField.bottomAnchor, topPad: 15, bottom: nil, bottomPad: 0,
left: view.leftAnchor, leftPad: 20, right: view.rightAnchor,
rightPad: -20, height: 50, width: 0)
loginButton.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false

Create a custom box with an arrow underneath using swift programatic ui

I am a junior swiftui developer, i am working on a project that require me to use UIKit in some of its part.
i want to achieve a view similar to the attached image which is an example of Waze Advertisment box:
after checking MapBox API and looking at some of the example i learned that if i want to achieve this i should use swift programatic ui which i am not that familiar with, in the example they have provided the following view:
and the way they have created it was as follow:
final class AdvertismentAnnotationView: UIView {
weak var delegate: AdvertismentAnnotationViewDelegate?
//Passing this model to get the data and display it
var advertismentModel: AdvertismentModel
var selected: Bool = false {
didSet {
selectButton.setTitle(selected ? "Deselect" : "Select", for: .normal)
}
}
var title: String? {
get { centerLabel.text }
set { centerLabel.text = newValue }
}
lazy var centerLabel: UILabel = {
let label = UILabel(frame: .zero)
label.font = UIFont.systemFont(ofSize: 10)
label.numberOfLines = 0
return label
}()
lazy var closeButton: UIButton = {
let button = UIButton(type: .system)
button.setTitleColor(.black, for: .normal)
button.setTitle("X", for: .normal)
return button
}()
lazy var selectButton: UIButton = {
let button = UIButton(type: .system)
button.setTitleColor(.white, for: .normal)
button.backgroundColor = #colorLiteral(red: 0, green: 0.4784313725, blue: 0.9882352941, alpha: 1)
button.layer.cornerRadius = 8
button.clipsToBounds = true
button.setTitle("Select", for: .normal)
return button
}()
//MARK: This is what i have added
//and image that will later fetch the image from advertisment.imageURL
lazy var adImage: UIImage = {
return UIImage()
}()
//MARK: Lifecycle
override init(frame: CGRect) {
super.init(frame: frame)
self.backgroundColor = .green
closeButton.addTarget(self, action: #selector(closePressed(sender:)), for: .touchUpInside)
selectButton.addTarget(self, action: #selector(selectPressed(sender:)), for: .touchUpInside)
[centerLabel, closeButton, selectButton].forEach { item in
item.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
self.addSubview(item)
}
NSLayoutConstraint.activate([
closeButton.topAnchor.constraint(equalTo: topAnchor, constant: 4),
closeButton.rightAnchor.constraint(equalTo: rightAnchor, constant: -4),
centerLabel.topAnchor.constraint(equalTo: topAnchor, constant: 4),
centerLabel.rightAnchor.constraint(equalTo: rightAnchor, constant: -4),
centerLabel.leftAnchor.constraint(equalTo: leftAnchor, constant: 4),
selectButton.bottomAnchor.constraint(equalTo: bottomAnchor, constant: -4),
selectButton.rightAnchor.constraint(equalTo: rightAnchor, constant: -4),
selectButton.leftAnchor.constraint(equalTo: leftAnchor, constant: 4)
])
}
}
what i want to achieve is a white rounded rectangle with an arrow underneath in its center and an image inside the box.
I have tried using swiftui in this uikit however i failed many time.
if this was a regular swiftui i would have created a ZStack with a rounded rectangle and a custom shape as of the arrow.
and using kingfisher to fetch the image.

UIButton Not Responding to Touch Events

Problem
I am trying to do everything programmatically, so I have created this ResultController. For some reason, two of my buttons work but the other three don't work. The program doesn't even notice the touch-up event. I have read many posts on this topic but none of the solutions worked for me.
The two buttons that work are the language button and the swap button, which are embedded in a stack view towards the top of the screen. The 3 buttons that don't work are the soundButton, loopButton, and addFlashcardButton on the result card shown in the image below.
Question
What do I need to do such that these buttons respond to touch events?
Here is the code for this viewController, as well as a picture of the result. I will post the important parts and the whole code for reference. The Buttons are laid out in two functions, setupResultsView() and setupScrollView():
Button Instantiation
var soundButton: UIButton = {
let button = UIButton()
button.setImage(UIImage(systemName: "speaker.3.fill"), for: .normal)
button.backgroundColor = .white
button.tintColor = .black
button.addTarget(self, action: #selector(soundButtonPressed), for: .touchUpInside)
return button
}()
var loopButton: UIButton = {
let button = UIButton()
button.setImage(UIImage(systemName: "repeat"), for: .normal)
button.backgroundColor = .white
button.tintColor = .black
button.addTarget(self, action: #selector(loopButtonPressed), for: .touchUpInside)
return button
}()
var addFlashcardButton: UIButton = {
let button = UIButton(frame: CGRect(x: 0, y: 0, width: 30, height: 30))
button.setImage(UIImage(systemName: "plus"), for: .normal)
button.backgroundColor = K.Colors.purple
button.tintColor = .white
button.roundCorners(cornerRadius: 15)
button.addTarget(self, action: #selector(addFlashcardButtonPressed), for: .touchUpInside)
return button
}()
Selector Functions
#objc func soundButtonPressed() {

How to segue smoothly from UITableViewController to UIViewController programmatically

I'm not using storyboard and I'm doing everything programmatically.
So my problem is that when try to run the app on my phone (This does not happen when I use the simulator in Xcode), and when I use the following method...
override func tableView(_ tableView: UITableView, didSelectRowAt indexPath: IndexPath) {
let destinationVC = ThirdViewController()
destinationVC.selectedExercise = exercises![indexPath.row]
self.navigationController?.pushViewController(destinationVC, animated: true)
}
...to transition from a UITableView to a UIView, the contents of the View transition normally, but the background freezes for a second before transitioning to the UIView.
What's causing this and how can I fix this?
Here is the code for the viewController that I'm transitioning to.

You're not implementing programmatic view controllers correctly. A programmatically-created view controller does all of its view building in loadView(), not viewDidLoad(). Therefore, add all of the view controller's subviews in loadView() (without calling super.loadView()). Then use viewDidLoad() (with calling super.viewDidLoad()) to do post-view work, like adding timers, notification observers, etc. I suspect the lagging is caused by an incorrectly-configured lifecycle.
It also appears you're relatively new to iOS or Swift development and so I would strongly suggest you do not use extensions, especially on UIView for auto layout. Learn how it all works first before you begin extending things. The process for programmatic auto layout is:
// adjust parameters first, like color, delegate, etc.
someView.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false // set resizing to false before adding as a subview
view.addSubview(someView) // add as a subview
someView.leadingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: view.leadingAnchor, constant: 16).isActive = true // add constraints

Creating an Input Accessory View programmatically

I'm trying to create a keyboard accessory view programmatically. I've set up a container view and inside that I'm trying to set up a textfield, post button, and an emoji.
Here's an example of what I'm trying to make.
Click here to view the image.
Here's the code that I am working with. I think the problem is when I'm setting the constraints.
Couple of questions running through my mind are:
Do I need to set up constraints for the container view?
How do I add appropriate constraints to the textfield?
override var inputAccessoryView: UIView? {
get {
//Set up the container
let containerView = UIView()
containerView.backgroundColor = #colorLiteral(red: 0.9784782529, green: 0.9650371671, blue: 0.9372026324, alpha: 1)
containerView.frame = CGRect(x: 0, y: 0, width: view.frame.width, height: 60)
let textField = UITextField()
textField.placeholder = "Add a reframe..."
textField.isSecureTextEntry = false
textField.textAlignment = .left
textField.borderStyle = .none
textField.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
textField.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
textField.leadingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: containerView.leadingAnchor).isActive = true
textField.trailingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: containerView.trailingAnchor).isActive = true
textField.bottomAnchor.constraint(equalTo: containerView.bottomAnchor).isActive = true
textField.topAnchor.constraint(equalTo: containerView.topAnchor).isActive = true
textField.heightAnchor.constraint(equalToConstant: 50)
containerView.addSubview(textField)
return containerView
}
}
This is the error that I keep getting.
*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSGenericException', reason: 'Unable to activate constraint with anchors and because they have no common ancestor. Does the constraint or its anchors reference items in different view hierarchies? That's illegal.'

Before applying constraints view should be in view hierarchy or error which you got will be raised. To get rid of error just do containerView.addSubview(textField) after let textField = UITextField().
Regarding example image you posted, initial solution could be something like this
override var inputAccessoryView: UIView? {
get {
//Set up the container
let containerView = UIView()
containerView.backgroundColor = #colorLiteral(red: 0.9784782529, green: 0.9650371671, blue: 0.9372026324, alpha: 1)
containerView.frame = CGRect(x: 0, y: 0, width: view.frame.width, height: 60)
let textField = UITextField()
containerView.addSubview(textField)
textField.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
textField.placeholder = "Add a reframe..."
textField.textAlignment = .left
textField.backgroundColor = .white
textField.layer.cornerRadius = 50/2
textField.layer.masksToBounds = true
textField.borderStyle = .none
textField.leadingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: containerView.leadingAnchor, constant: 8).isActive = true
textField.bottomAnchor.constraint(equalTo: containerView.bottomAnchor, constant: -5).isActive = true
textField.topAnchor.constraint(equalTo: containerView.topAnchor, constant: 10).isActive = true
textField.leftView = UIView(frame: CGRect(x: 0, y: 0, width: 15, height: textField.frame.height)) // adding left padding so it's not sticked to border
textField.leftViewMode = .always
let arrow = UIImageView(image: #imageLiteral(resourceName: "arrowUp"))
containerView.addSubview(arrow)
arrow.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
arrow.trailingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: textField.trailingAnchor, constant: -10).isActive = true
arrow.centerYAnchor.constraint(equalTo: textField.centerYAnchor).isActive = true
let button = UIButton()
containerView.addSubview(button)
button.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
button.setTitle("🤗", for: .normal)
button.contentEdgeInsets = UIEdgeInsets(top: 5, left: 5, bottom: 5, right: 5)
button.leadingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: textField.trailingAnchor, constant: 10).isActive = true
button.trailingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: containerView.trailingAnchor, constant: -8).isActive = true
button.centerYAnchor.constraint(equalTo: textField.centerYAnchor).isActive = true
// Negative values for constraints can be avoided if we change order of views when applying constrains
// f.e. instead of button.trailingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: containerView.trailingAnchor, constant: -8).isActive = true
// write containerView.trailingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: button.trailingAnchor, constant: 8).isActive = true
return containerView
}

unable trigger uiview.animate when placed inside a function in swift

I am unable to trigger the animation, I put the function below outside the viewdidload function and created a custom function that will be trigger when the button is tapped. But instead of it creating the animation it gave me an error below. this is the error
Thread 1: Fatal error: Unexpectedly found nil while unwrapping an Optional value
this is the function that going to be triggered
#objc func triggeranimation(){
UIView.animate(withDuration: 0.5, animations: {
let intro:introViewController = introViewController()
intro.Title.backgroundColor = UIColor.blue
}, completion: nil)
}
and I added button programmatically inside viewdidload that will trigger the function above. I try to put the custom func above before and after viewdidload function with the same error result. please help why is it telling me that it found nil when I clearly in the same view controller.
let nextBtn = UIButton(frame: CGRect(x:0, y: 0, width: 0, height: 0))

}
#objc func triggeranimation(){
UIView.animate(withDuration: 0.5, animations: {
let intro:introViewController = introViewController()
intro.Title.backgroundColor = UIColor.blue
}, completion: nil)
}
}
in addition, i also tried to move UIView.animate inside the viewdidload but it did not animate at all, it just change the color instantly.
UPDATE: i did solve the found nil problem, by changing Title variable
var Title:UILabel! into var Title:UILabel! = UILabel()
but i still have a problem with animation, it did not make any animation just instantly change the color even when i make the DURATION longer into 5.0
The problem is that intro is a newly initialized view controller which is completely unrelated to the instance in question. For example, viewDidLoad will not be called on that new instance. Instead, you just want to use "self", meaning THE loaded view controller.
#objc func triggeranimation(){
UIView.animate(withDuration: 0.5, animations: {
//let intro:introViewController = introViewController()
self.Title.backgroundColor = UIColor.blue
}, completion: nil)
}
There also seems to be a problem in your viewDidLoad code, where you are trying to initialize the Title and nextBtn properties. Instead, you are accidentally creating a local constant of the same name. This is why your properties are nil.
// You have this now, which creates a local constant
//let Title = UILabel(..
// You want this instead, which initializes your property
self.Title = UILabel(..
Do the same for nextBtn, of course.
