One of our Project requirement wants to migrate SnapshotCM to TFS. I searched in internet, but didn't find any links or document.
Is it possible to migrate snapshotCM to TFS with version control history?
If it's possible, please provide me the documentation or some links to do.
Is it possible to migrate snapshotCM to TFS with version control
history?
As I know, there hasn't such possible can support migrate repos from snapshotCM to TFS. For TFS, it only support Git and TFVC version control tools. Until now, what we supported is migrate between TFVC and Git.
You can raise a feature suggestion ticket in our official community. Then the relevant microsoft development team would review this suggestion and consider whether it would be added into our develop roadmap.

I have some projects on TFVC source control on TFS 2010. I want just to migrate the source code from TFS 2010 to TFVC on Azure DevOps Server.
I don't want to process an upgrade of the entire collection to a newest version. I Just want to transfer my code with history.
I tried Git-TFS. I cloned my repository on TFS 2010, but I don't know how I can update the remote URL for TFVC repos and push on Azure DevOps Server.
Any ideas how I can do it? Or other tools that I can use?.
In the case I decide to migrate without history how can I do it?
Thanks.
git-tfs is a two-way bridge between TFS (Team Foundation Server) and git, similar to git-svn. It fetches TFS commits into a git repository, and lets you push your updates back to TFS.
If you want to move code from TFVC on TFS2010 to TFVC on Azure DevOps 2019 and keep history.
You have to do the upgrade process of entire project collection.
In the case I decide to migrate without history how can I do it
You could just create corresponding new team projects and workspaces. Pull down your source code from your TFS2010 workspaces/projects. Copy and paste source code files/folders in new workspace. Then check in them back to Azure DevOps Server 2019.
We advise you keep preview TFVC repository of 2010 online but read-only to view history.
Same with Azure DevOps Service, hope this helps.
Disclaimer: I'm the last maintainer of the git-tfs tool (even if I no more work on it)
Git-tfs could be used to migrate from TFVC to git (with history and branches if your history is not too complex).
But in no way it could be used to push this history to another empty TFVC project.
So don't expect something from here.
Fun fact (not so fun for you) :
To prevent regression developing git-tfs, I created a TFVC project on Codeplex used to run smoke tests in a Continuous Integration job.
When Microsoft decided to close Codeplex, I contacted a guy working in the source control team inside Microsoft to help me migrate from Codeplex to Azure Devops (at the time called VSTS) which is the problem you try to solve.
I don't know if they put a lot of effort into this but no one was able give me a solution. The only thing they think about was to use git-tfs, that I confirm you is not able to do it!
That could give you an idea of the problem you're trying to solve...
Ps: that also show that TFVC is not an enough flexible source control and their is a much higher added value to migrate to git (like nearly everyone is doing it...)
According to Microsoft's migration guide (p. 25), the TFSMigrator tool that will migrate data to DevOps only supports the current version and 1 previous version of TFS which means migrating to the newest TFS version is integral in the process.
I'm using an old version of TFS which I wouldn't have too big an issue upgrading except the server it runs on is Windows Server 2008 which doesn't support anything past TFS 2012.
Since all I need is the code repository as it sits today (I don't care about work items, history, or anything else), is there an alternative method for migrating my code?
I'm okay with something semi-manual if necessary. I have about 30 projects to migrate so if I had to migrate project by project, that isn't a big deal. I'm just hoping not to have to recreate each project by hand.
Try git-tfs.
The process is:
Use git-tfs to turn the source TFVC repo into a local Git repo with all of the history preserved
Use git-tfs to "check in" the Git repo to the target TFVC repo
A few caveats:
It's going to be slow.
It's not going to be a full-fidelity migration; you're going to lose the dates of the checkins and possibly the identity of the person who made the checkin in the target system.
An alternative is to spin up a non-production modern TFS environment, clone your team project collection, upgrade it on the non-prod instance, then use the migration tool. That's going to capture everything with full fidelity, and that official tool is the only option you have if you want full fidelity.
I am Currently working on TFS migration from TFS 2015 U3 to TFS 2018 RTM--->VSTS
Here are my concerns,
1. If the extensions migrate to TFS 2018, When i migrate tfs 2018 ---> VSTS, Would it possible to migrate those to VSTS (EX:SSIS Deploy,SSRS Deployment)?
2. Would it be possible to get all the customized data on the TFS project dashboard after the migration to VSTS?
3. As per MSDN, For the migration of TFS2018 ---> VSTS, We need to use "TFS Migration Tool" , May i know where can we install the tool and how to process the migration using it?
4.Once we migrate to VSTS, If I want to use GIT, Is there anyway to use it as a source control?
To migrate TFS on-premise server to VSTS, there are three Migration options:
Option 1: Copy the most important assets manually
Option 2: High fidelity database migration
Option 3: Using public API-based tools for higher fidelity migration
According to your requirement, suggest you use option 2, the TFS/VSTS product team provides a high fidelity TFS Database Import Service. A downloadable Migration Guide is available at https://aka.ms/TFSImportData.
Because the TFS Database Import Service operates at a database level, it can provide a very high fidelity migration. If you want to move your existing TFS data into VSTS, we strongly recommend using this option.
More details please refer this tutorial: Migrate data from TFS to VSTS.
After the database level migration, the customized data on the project dashboard will also be stored. Not sure about the extension, however you could download them from Marketplace or upload your customize extension to VSTS again even lose them.
Besides, you could use git as source control in VSTS. Simply create a team project and select Git as version control, also take a look at: Get Started with Git and VSTS
What are the best practices to migrate workitems say PBIs/Features manually from TFS to VSTS? And how to ensure we don't lose any linking to changesets or other linked child workitems?
Have referred the below link and the migration tool mentioned is deprecated and would like to know any other options which will help to migrate the data.
How to migrate work items from TFS to VS Team Services (VS Online)
The recommend way for now is using Migrate to Visual Studio Team Service, a way import your TFS Database into Visual Studio Team Services which definitely along with data.
However, currently only the following versions of TFS are supported for import with this tool:
TFS 2017 Update 3
TFS 2018
You may have to upgrade your TFS server to use. Alternative, the Microsoft official option is using public API-based tools.
Personally, even though Team Foundation Server Integration Tools has been deprecated. You could still use this solution in your case.
Besides, if you have no work item customization, then OpsHub is an
option. VSTS Sync Migration Tools is another way. But none offer a full fidelity migrations. Each tool has its own limitations.
I'm planning a move from Jira to Team Foundation Server (TFS) 2015 and I can't find a good method of migrating the data between the two systems.
Are there any good methods out there ?
My company recently moved from Jira to TFS. I ended up writing my own utility to do the migration.
I've since published it as open source and it can be found on GitHub here:
https://github.com/KilskyreMan/JiraToTfs.git
The project will compile and run under Visual Studio 2015. It offers various mapping abilities via a GUI that should allow you (if needed) tailor your import.
Hope this helps - Ian.
For now, no documentation mentions how to migrate from Jira to TFS, but there are some plugins to have two-way sync between TFS and Jira, you can take a look at them:
