I've been trying to pass this test suite on our spree app but it keeps saying:

expecting <"new"> but rendering with <[]>
Here's the test:

I have a Model called Photo, so I have created a Factory girl for that:

Yes, without those lines I got the following error:

Which is the same error you're getting now, so adding those 2 lines should probably fix the issue for you.
My problem is that capybara holds only one authorized request (doesn't matter was it authorization through the login form or through the helper login_as method)
Other (second, third) requests are unauthorized!
It doesn't mater what driver I use. Where the problem can be?

Most probably between the first request and the second, rspec cleans up the DB.
For this second request the user form the first request no more exists. You should create another user and login/authorize it.
Ex:
For each it block you'll have to do a login_as(a_new_just_created_user). Yes, you can put this into a before block to be executed for the entire test suite.

Can anyone tell me how I can get my controller specs to run without having to explicitly add :type => :controller? The controller specs are all in the dir spec/controllers so RSpec should just know that they are controller specs.
You're running RSpec 3 and you haven't fully upgraded your configuration from RSpec 2.
rspec-rails 3 generates 'spec_helper.rb' and 'rails_helper.rb'. 'rails_helper.rb' requires 'spec_helper.rb'. In rspec-rails 3, specs of Rails classes should require 'rails_helper', not require 'spec_helper' as the generated spec is doing. So, either
change require 'spec_helper' to require 'rails_helper',
regenerate your scaffold (I believe your spec was generated by rspec-rails 2), or
remove the require altogether and put --require rails_helper in your project's .rspec file so it is automatically included in all specs.
And then config.infer_spec_type_from_file_location! will take effect.

Problem is i am not able to save the data to database . if i remove the check for the data in Application table from the test. it passes. but how can i verify that it is really passing. i mean to say there is no issues.

I think the issue here is that you are testing the wrong thing. A feature (integration) spec tests the system the way a user interacts with it. So as much as possible, your test should limit itself to the activities a user can perform. Instead of checking that, for example, after adding a user the User.count goes up by one, have the test do the same thing a user would do to verify that the the action was successful. You could visit the user page to see that the user was added, or have an element on the page that tells you how many users exist.
Remember that the test server and the browser use separate processes. This can cause timing issues where you expect that the server has completed an action (eg. adding a user) in one process, but the database change is occurring in another process. You can avoid those issues by having the test browser imitate a user's actions. Do the database testing in model specs.
By default the test database is cleared after each test. So that each time you run the tests, you've got a clean slate.
If you don't want this to happen you can change the config in you spec/spec_helper.rb to
config.use_transactional_fixtures = false
but if you not clearing the db after each test, then any records created from the previously run test could change the result of the next test. Giving you a false positive or negative
You will have a block like below in your spec/spec_helper.rb . I do not recommend disabling the transactional fixture as it will cause lot of problems when you have more than one test.

If the above test fails, then your functionality is not working as expected
You cannot use transactional fixtures if you are using anything other than ActiveRecord.
If you are using MongoID you can use Database Cleaner with Truncation Strategy

Your controller specs should be in the spec/controllers/ folder. However, you may want for some reason to have some other files that run controller specs (for example, I'm testing markup validation in a separate test file).
You can do this :

And this should do the trick !
You should place your controller specs inside a spec/controllers directory. RSpec is including these methods based on this, AFAIK.
In my case my test was already in spec/controllers/. I needed to add config.infer_spec_type_from_file_location! inside the RSpec.configure do |config| loop in spec_helper.rb. I had updated rspec from 2.x to 3.x without realizing it, and that config is needed for controller tests from 3.x.
If you test the views, RSpec have the spec/requests directory for that, it will render views by default. (See the doc)
this problem may be caused by your Gem rspec-rails version. downgrade it back to 2.x solved my problem:
