Presenting ViewController Using storyBoard:
if newViewController is in StoryBoard.we can present it using the following method.
let storyboard = UIStoryboard(name: "AViewController"), bundle: UIBundle.main)
let newViewcontroller = storyboard.instantiateInitialViewController() as? AViewController
self.present(newViewcontroller, animated: false, completion: nil)
Is it Possible to present a ViewController which is not in storyBoard but its parent viewcontroller has storyboard
I have create a B viewcontroller programatically (No StoryBoard) ,now I would like to present BViewController and it should use the AViewController StoryBoard?
class AViewController : UIViewController
{
//this class is in storyboard which is generic design that I want to use it in different ways.
}
class BViewController : AViewController
{
....//
}
e.g.
self.present(BViewController(), animated: false, completion: nil)?
when I present BViewcontroller it throws nil for parameters which are from super class.
I founded the answer to reuse the story board file or inherite the story board file.
object_setClass(Sets the class of an object.) will override instance of AViewController with BViewController Class. So on top of AViewController you can add some more methods.
when you have similar viewcontroller with small changes. you have to create different viewcontrollers. using this method you can create on basic viewcontroller with storyboard and reuse that viewcontroller .
class BViewController{
static func vcInstanceFromStoryboard() ->BViewController? {
let storyboard = UIStoryboard(name: "AViewController"), bundle: UIBundle.main)
let instance = storyboard.instantiateInitialViewController() as? AViewController
object_setClass(instance, BViewController.self) //
return (instance as? BViewController)!
}
.....
}
This is an example of how do we use it:
let vc = BViewController.vcInstanceFromStoryboard()
self.present(vc , animation : true)
Your code will work fine if your ViewController truly isn't in a Storyboard. All you have to do is instantiate it without a nibName, like this:
class ViewController: UIViewController {
init() {
super.init(nibName: nil, bundle: nil)
}
required init?(coder aDecoder: NSCoder) {
fatalError()
}
}
Normal Storyboard ViewControllers rely on the coder init to be created, but you can create them normally with the nibName: nil initializer, as long as you don't have any outlets on it (which is your case since the ViewController is not on a storyboard)
Everything is possible programmatically. Not everything is possible through Interface Builder. Storyboards are just a component of Interface Builder.
To present a view controller programmatically from the root:
#objc private func presentViewController() {
guard let root = UIApplication.shared.keyWindow!.rootViewController else {
return
}
let destination = SomeViewController()
destination.transitioningDelegate = YourAnimationVendor()
destination.modalPresentationStyle = .custom
root.present(destination, animated: true, completion: nil)
}
You can omit the transitioning delegate (and the custom animation vendor) and present using a stock UIKit animation, like .fullScreen instead of .custom.
#objc private func presentViewController() {
guard let root = UIApplication.shared.keyWindow!.rootViewController else {
return
}
let destination = SomeViewController()
destination.modalPresentationStyle = .fullScreen
root.present(destination, animated: true, completion: nil)
}

I created a view in .xib. On it, I placed a button on which I want to open another ViewController. I assigned a storyboardID to this ViewController. But I can't push the new controller, how can this problem be solved?
My code:
class MyView: UIView {
...
#IBAction func buttonPressed(_ sender: Any) {
let storyboard = UIStoryboard.init(name: "ViewController", bundle: Bundle.init())
let vc = storyboard.instantiateViewController(withIdentifier: "VC") as! ViewController
let navigationController = UINavigationController.init()
navigationController.pushViewController(vc, animated: true)
}
...
}
class ViewController: UIViewController {
...
}
Xcode gives this error:
'Could not find a storyboard named' ViewController'
but I checked there are no errors. I reloaded Xcode - no result.
Seems you have more than one issue.
You are trying to push a UIViewController into a non presented UINavigationController
You are creating an instance from a UIStoryboard with wrong identifier
First you need to choose the correct UIStoryboard which I am assuming it's main, then you have to present the UINavigationController from the holder UIViewController or trying to push from that UIViewController if it's has a UINavigationController,
Part 1: Fixing the instances,
let storyboard = UIStoryboard.init(name: "main", bundle: Bundle())
let vc = storyboard.instantiateViewController(withIdentifier: "VC") as! ViewController
let navigationController = UINavigationController(rootViewController: vc)
Now you have a navigationController that holds a your VC
Part 2: You want to present this navigation from your holding VC you can either add a listener to the UIButton from that VC and present/push from there
so lets wrap this up create a function in your VC that holds the UIView
#objc func pushToMyVc() {
let storyboard = UIStoryboard.init(name: "main", bundle: Bundle())
let vc = storyboard.instantiateViewController(withIdentifier: "VC") as! ViewController
let navigationController = UINavigationController(rootViewController: vc)
}
And in your UIView add this variable var selector: (() -> Void)?
Now in #IBAction func buttonPressed call this function selector?()
Now all we need is to pass what function I want to use when this button gets clicked in our case the function pushToMyVC that we put in our main UIViewController so in our didLoad or wherever you're calling this custom view
set the selector like this
myView.selector = pushtoMyVC
Side Note: you can't present/push UIViewController from non
UIViewController classes
Try changing how you fetch the storyboard from
let storyboard = UIStoryboard.init(name: "ViewController", bundle: Bundle.init())
to
let storyboard = UIStoryboard(name: "ViewController", bundle: nil)
note that the storyboard ID needs to be exactly ViewController.
If this still shows the same error, I'd say you have an issue with the storyboard target membership, so check that in the file inspector on the right side of the Xcode editor.
You should check your Storyboard file name again, because when you want to initiate a UIViewController from a Storyboard file, the name parameter in UIStoryboard initiation has to be exactly the same as the Storyboard file name.
#IBAction func buttonPressed(_ sender: Any) {
// Let's say that you have a Storyboard file named ViewController.storyboard and a UIViewController class named ViewController.swift
let destinationVC = UIStoryboard(name: "ViewController", bundle: nil).instantiateViewController(withIdentifier: "VC") as! ViewController
self.navigationController?.pushViewController(destinationVC, animated: true)
}
Hope this helps your issue
you should take a delegate back to viewController that contains current view, and call navigationController.push from there
I have a design made in nib and in round about all ViewControllers I am loading that nib design.
Now as that was common footer so I managed to used it in the footer of all other view controllers.
Now what I want : I want that whenever User click on a footer it must start a new View Controller that will show what you can say "About us " view controller.
What I am doing:
// ON CLICK OF FOOTER I AM DOING
let mAboutUs = self.storyboard?.instantiateViewController(withIdentifier: "idAboutUs") as! AboutUs
mAboutUs.modalPresentationStyle = .fullScreen
self.present(mAboutUs, animated: true) {
}
but I am getting following error
Value of type 'FooterView' has no member 'storyboard'
My Understanding: I think from nib file we can not start a new ViewController, But I really do not want to do this thing in all other View controllers in which I added this nib (FooterView) as my footer view at bottom of each view controller.
Please help me!!!!
A UIView subclass doesn't contain a storyboard property it's for a vc subclass , You need
let vc = UIStoryboard(name: "Main", bundle: nil).instantiateViewController(withIdentifier: "idAboutUs") as! AboutUs
if you want to present a vc from inisde the view FooterView then add a delegate like
weak var delegate:VCName?
When you create an instance
let ins = FooterView() // or from storyboard
ins.delegate = self
Then use
delegate?.present(mAboutUs, animated: true)
inside the view's class
You can use a delegate that all vcs conforms to but the easiest is to add this extension
extension UIViewController {
func topMostViewController() -> UIViewController {
if let presented = self.presentedViewController {
return presented.topMostViewController()
}
if let navigation = self as? UINavigationController {
return navigation.visibleViewController?.topMostViewController() ?? navigation
}
if let tab = self as? UITabBarController {
return tab.selectedViewController?.topMostViewController() ?? tab
}
return self
}
}
Then
guard let currentVC = (UIApplication.shared.delegate as! AppDelegate).window?.rootViewController.topMostViewController() else { return }
currentVC.present(mAboutUs, animated: true)
Your code should look similar to this:
let vc = UIStoryboard(name: "<Name of the storyboard that contains the About Us VC>", bundle: nil).instantiateViewController(withIdentifier: "idAboutUs") as! AboutUs
self.present(vc, animated: true) {
}
I have a viewcontroller that presents from a .xib.
Inside the .xib there is a button; I want the button to pushviewcontroller to an other viewcontroller (ViewControllerPeopleNew).
I use an action button:
#IBAction func _hitPeople(sender: AnyObject) {
let mapViewControllerObejct = self.storyboard?.instantiateViewControllerWithIdentifier("peoplenew") as? ViewControllerPeopleNew
self.navigationController?.pushViewController(mapViewControllerObejct!, animated: false)
}
But got an error:
Signal SIGABRT
unrecognized selector sent to instance
I already checked all about name identifier viewcontroller and all is right.
From view controller present with XIB you can not get storyboad use below code
#IBAction func _hitPeople(sender: AnyObject) {
let storyboard = UIStoryboard(name: "storyboadname", bundle: nil)
let mapViewControllerObejct = storyboard.instantiateViewControllerWithIdentifier("peoplenew") as? ViewControllerPeopleNew
self.navigationController?.pushViewController(mapViewControllerObejct!, animated: false)
}
Always remember that you can only use self.storyBoard to instantiate a view controller when both the view controllers (To and From view controllers) belong to the same storyboard. If not then you need to first get a reference to the storyboard your To view controller belongs to. So you need to do this:
#IBAction func _hitPeople(sender: AnyObject) {
let stotyboard = UIStoryboard(name: "YourStoryboard", bundle: nil)
let mapViewControllerObejct = storyboard?.instantiateViewControllerWithIdentifier("peoplenew") as? ViewControllerPeopleNew
self.navigationController?.pushViewController(mapViewControllerObejct!, animated: false)
}
PS: Just be sure that your From view controller is in the navigation stack i.e. self.navigationController is not nil.
I have a view in my xib file which contain buttons. i want to move to a ViewController when i will press the button (#IBAction). I have used below code
let storyBoard : UIStoryboard = UIStoryboard(name: "Main", bundle:nil)
let nextViewController = storyBoard.instantiateViewControllerWithIdentifier("About") as! AboutViewController
self.presentViewController(nextViewController, animated: true, completion: nil)
I am getting the error "Value of type 'SlideMenuView' has no member 'presentViewController'.
because my class is a UIView type :
class SlideMenuView: UIView {
}
so how can I navigate to other view controller.
That is beacuase the class you are trying to present from is a UIView and not a UIViewController. It has no Present method.
I'm guessing your view (SlideMenuView) is embedded inside a viewcontroller. what you need to do is implement a delegate, and inform your containing viewController to present next Viewcontroller.
code below:
#protocol SlideMenuViewDelegate: class {
func slideMenuViewAboutButtonClicked(menuView: SlideMenuView)
class SlideMenuView: UIView {
weak var delegate: SlideMenuViewDelegate?
#IBAction func aboutButtonClicked(sender: AnyObject) {
self.delegate?.slideMenuViewAboutButtonClicked(self)
}
now, in your viewController, implement this delegate method:
func slideMenuViewAboutButtonClicked(menuView: SlideMenuView) {
let storyBoard : UIStoryboard = UIStoryboard(name: "Main", bundle:nil)
let nextViewController = storyBoard.instantiateViewControllerWithIdentifier("About") as! AboutViewController
self.presentViewController(nextViewController, animated: true, completion: nil)
}
Also, dont forget to assign the sliderMenuView object the viewcontroller as a delegate.
something like:
self.sliderMenuView.delegate = self // (self == the containing viewController
I did it in a different way. In class file
class SlideMenuView: UIView {
var navigationController: UINavigationController? // Declare a navigation controller variable
// And create a method which take a navigation controller
func prepareScreen(navController: UINavigationController)-> UIView {
navigationController = navController
let nibView = NSBundle.mainBundle().loadNibNamed("SlideMenuView", owner: self, options: nil)[0] as! UIView
self.addSubview(nibView)
return nibView
}
// In Button action
#IBAction func btnAction(sender: UIButton) {
var storyBoard = UIStoryboard(name: "Main", bundle: nil)
let nextViewController = storyBoard!.instantiateViewControllerWithIdentifier("NextViewController") as! UIViewController
navigationController?.pushViewController(nextViewController, animated: true)
}
}
// For calling from UIViewController
slideBarMenuIstance.prepareScreen(self.navigationController!)
I have 3(cv1, cv2, cv3) container views place on same position on mainViewContoller.
All 3 having different viewController classes (.swift)
Button is placed on cv2(secondViewController), on that button click I want to change containerView from cv2 to cv3.
For more clear, how can I call mainViewController method from secondViewController (cv2)?
secondViewController.swift
#IBAction func nextButtonClick(sender: UIButton) {
// Want to call action of firstViewController which is changeContainerView()
}
firstViewController.swift
funct changeContainerView(){
loginContainerView.hidden = true
signUpContainerView.hidden = false
}
Like that.
You should use the delegate pattern. It's very common in the Cocoa framework. See the documentation if you don't know how it works.
Try this
dispatch_sync(dispatch_get_main_queue(), { () -> Void in
let storyboard = UIStoryboard(name: "Main", bundle: nil)
let svc = storyboard.instantiateViewControllerWithIdentifier("SecondViewController") as! SecondViewController
self.presentViewController(svc, animated: true, completion: nil)
})
Yout need just change mainstoryboard name if it needed and name of destination VC in 2 places
