I'm running into a problem when trying to create a new object using nested resources in Rails. My routing is set up as:
resources :coins do
resources :questions
end
When I attempt to create a new question, it does not save. I'm redirected to the 'questions' page and the form from the 'new' page including everything that was typed into it remains on the page (rather than the list of questions that are supposed to be there when it saves). My controller is as follows:
class QuestionsController < ApplicationController
before_action :find_question, only: [:show]
before_action :find_coin
before_action :authenticate_user!, except: [:index, :show]
def index
#questions = Question.where(coin_id: #coin.id).order("created_at DESC")
end
def show
end
def new
#coin
#question = current_user.questions.build
end
def create
#question = current_user.questions.build(question_params)
if #question.save
redirect_to coin_question(#question.coin_id, #question.id)
else
render 'new'
end
end
private
def find_question
#question = Question.find(params[:id])
end
def find_coin
#coin = Coin.find(params[:coin_id])
end
def question_params
params.require(:question).permit(:content, :ques_num, :coin_id)
end
end
My 'new' page then displays the following form:
<%= simple_form_for #question, url: coin_questions_path(#coin.id) do |f| %>
<%= f.input :ques_num %>
<%= f.input :content %>
<%= f.submit "Post", class: "btn btn-primary" %>
<% end %>
This is my first time using nested resources and its tripping me up a little bit. I really appreciate any assistance here.
Your create action is failing and so it's executing the else statement which is just rendering back your form with the data you entered. The easiest thing to do is to just check out the log file and see why the save it being blocked.
go to /log/development.log and if you're using a mac press Command and the down arrow which will bring you all the way to the bottom of the file.
Also you may want to check out your model validations. If you don't have flash setup or aren't outputting the errors to your view a validation may be causing the form not to save and you wouldn't see the errors.
you could add some error handling to your view like this
<%= form_with(model: question, local: true) do |form| %>
<% if question.errors.any? %>
<div id="error_explanation">
<h2 class="text-danger"><%= pluralize(question.errors.count, "error") %> prohibited this question from being saved:</h2>
<ul class="text-danger">
<% question.errors.full_messages.each do |message| %>
<li><%= message %></li>
<% end %>
</ul>
</div>
<% end %>
for your controller try
def create
#question = Question.new(question_params)
if #question.save
flash[:success] = "question created successfully!"
redirect_to question_url(#question.id)
else
render 'new'
end
end
I think there will be error to create question.
if #question.save
redirect_to coin_question(#question.coin_id, #question.id)
else
render 'new'
end
So if record have any error to save it will redirect to new form.
Just use following code to know what is the errors to creating question
def create
#question = current_user.questions.build(question_params)
if #question.save
flash[:notice] = 'Question created'
redirect_to coin_question(#question.coin_id, #question.id)
else
flash[:notice] = 'Some error here!'
render 'new'
end
end
You need to setup flash to show flash error.

im making a twitter clone and trying to make it so the users username appears next to their tweet.
Ive made it work through adding a user and a tweet in the seed file, hoever when i add a create,new method and a form it comes up with the error "Couldn't find User without an ID" and highlighting the first line of my create method. not sure what the issue is, thanks.
class TweetsController < ApplicationController
before_action :authenticate_user!, :except => [:index, :new, :create]
def index
#tweets = Tweet.all.order("created_at DESC")
#tweet = Tweet.new
end
def show
#tweet = Tweet.find(params[:id])
end
def new
# #tweet = Tweet.new
end
def create
#user = User.find(params[:id])
#tweet = Tweet.new(tweet_params)
#tweet.user = #user
if #tweet.save
redirect_to tweets_path
end
end
def edit
#tweet = Tweet.find(params[:id])
end
def update
#tweet = Tweet.find(params[:id])
#tweet.update(tweet_params)
redirect_to tweets_path
end
private
def tweet_params
params.require(:tweet).permit(:user_id,:content)
end
end
<h1>TWEETS</h1>
<%= simple_form_for [#user,#tweet], id: "form-submit" do |f| %>
<%= f.input :content, label: "Tweet" %>
<%= f.input :user %>
<%= f.button :submit, class: "btn btn-danger" %>
<% end %>
<br>
<% #tweets.each do |tweet| %>
<ul>
<li>
<%= tweet.created_at.strftime("%B %d %Y, %l:%M%P") %> <br>
<%= tweet.content %>
<%= tweet.user.username %>
</li>
</ul>
<% end %>
You need to define #user in a variable in your index method.
Any variable you use in the form needs to be declared somewhere, either in the helper, controller, or view. Rails convention is to declare them in the controller normally.
I would need to see your config/routes.rb file for the error message you are getting in the image, but if you type rails routes at the command line, you can see a list of all available routes, when you use:
simple_form_for [#user, #tweet]
Rails will interpret [#user, #tweet] as user_tweets_path, and try to submit the form to this path. That path is defined in your config/routes.rb file.
The error is telling you that you have not defined this path in the routes file. To define this path you can add this line to your routes file:
resources :users do
resources :tweets
end
I have 2 models - project and todo, and the project contain many todos. I'm trying to write a form that would add a todo to a specific project, that's selected in the tray.
Unfortunately I get an error
Couldn't find Project with 'id'=
from todos_controller when i redirect to /todos
#project = Project.find(params[:project_id])
/projects/index.html.erb
<h1> Задачи </h1>
<% #projects.each do |project_name|%>
<h3><%= project_name.title %></h3>
<ul>
<% project_name.todos.each do |project_todo| %>
<li>
<p><%= project_todo.text %></p>
</li>
<% end %>
</ul>
<% end %>
<h1> Новая задача </h1>
<%= form_with scope: :todo, url: todos_path, local: true do |form| %>
<p>
<% form.label :text %><br>
<%= form.text_field :title, placeholder: "Название задачи" %>
</p>
<%= form.select( :project_id, options_from_collection_for_select(Project.all, :id, :title)) %>
<p>

<%= link_to form.submit %>
</p>
<% end %>

class ProjectsController < ApplicationController
def index
#projects = Project.all

end
end
todos_controller.rb
class TodosController < ApplicationController
def index
#todos = Todo.all
respond_to do |format|
format.html
format.json {render json: #todos}
end
end
def update
end
def create
#project = Project.find(params[:project_id])
#todo = #project.todo.create(todo_params)
redirect_to projects_path
end
end
routes.rb
Rails.application.routes.draw do
resources :projects, :todos
root 'projects#index'
end
I also could not display the submit button as a text link.
modify create action as
def create
#project = Project.find(params[:todo][project_id])
#todo = #project.todo.create(todo_params)
redirect_to projects_path
end
if not works then check params hash from server log and check project_id is present in params or not.
Above will work but I think you do not need to find project if you modify create action as
def create
#todo = Todo.create(todo_params)
redirect_to projects_path
end
also define method as
def todo_params
params.require(:todo).permit(:project_id, :title)
end
Your controller expects a project_id parameter which is probably not passed! Try to add the project id to your params hash when you trigger the todos#create method
params[:project_id] is nil because the form you are submitting for todo, so you need to access project_id as
Project.find(params[:todo][project_id]) in create action.
So replace your create action as follow
def create
#project = Project.find(params[:todo][project_id])
#todo = #project.todo.create(todo_params)
redirect_to projects_path
end
Dont forget to include project_id in todo_params method.
I'm creating a website on which people can read mangas, thanks to three scaffolds : one for the manga itself, one for its chapters and a last one for the chapter's pages. In my routes.rb file, I nested the pages inside the chapter resources, which I nested inside the manga's, so my routes look like the following:
resources :mangas do
resources :chapters do
resources :pejis #Rails doesn't like the "scan" word
end
end
I can create a manga without troubles, but for an unknown reason, I can't manage to make the form appear:
views/chapters/_form.html.erb
<%= form_for(chapter) do |f| %>
<div class="field">
<%= f.label :titre %>
<%= f.text_field :titre %>
</div>
<div class="field">
<%= f.label :apercu %>
<%= f.file_field :apercu %>
</div>
<div class="field">
<!-- Allows me to upload the chapter's pages in the same time -->
<label for="images[]">Multi Upload</label>
<%= file_field_tag 'images[]', type: :file, multiple: true %>
</div>
<div class="actions">
<%= f.submit %>
</div>
<% end %>
The form_for parameter is as it was when created by the scaffold command. However, obviously, it doesn't work since I nested the resources inside the manga scaffold. I tried a few things, until new_manga_chapter_path allowed me to see the form. However, when submitting it, I'm getting the following error:
No route matches [POST] "/mangas/1/chapters/new". I'm not even sure if this is normal or strange.
I'm pretty sure I shouldn't put "new_manga_chapter_path" as parameter for the form_for but I have no idea what to put instead.
Just in case, here is the chapter controller:
class ChaptersController < ApplicationController
before_action :set_chapter, only: [:show, :edit, :update, :destroy]
def index
#chapters = Chapter.all
end
def show
end
def new
#chapter = Chapter.new
end
def edit
end
def create
#chapter = Chapter.new(chapter_params)
if #chapter.save
(params[:images] || []).each_with_index do |image, index|
#chapter.pejis.create(image: image, scan_number: index + 1)
end
redirect_to #chapter, notice: 'Chapter was successfully created.'
else
render :new
end
end
def update
if #chapter.update(chapter_params)
(params[:images] || []).each_with_index do |image, index|
#chapter.pejis.create(image: image, scan_number: index + 1)
end
redirect_to #chapter, notice: 'Chapter was successfully updated.'
else
render :edit
end
end
def destroy
#chapter.destroy
redirect_to chapters_url, notice: 'Chapter was successfully destroyed.'
end
private
def set_chapter
#chapter = Chapter.friendly.find(params[:id])
end
def chapter_params
params.require(:chapter).permit(:titre, :apercu)
end
end
Don't hesitate if you want to see something else
Thank you in advance
Try this:
# don't replace the [] by ()
<%= form_for [#manga, #chapter] do |f| %>
Or
<%= form_for manga_chapter_path(#manga, #chapter) %>
And in your controller:
def new
#manga = Manga.find(params[:manga_id])
#chapter = Chapter.new
end
To help you after your comments:
In your create method:
def create
#manga = Manga.find(params[:manga_id])
#chapter = Chapter.new(chapter_params)
if #chapter.save
(params[:images] || []).each_with_index do |image, index|
#chapter.pejis.create(image: image, scan_number: index + 1)
end
redirect_to manga_chapter_path(#manga, #chapter), notice: 'Chapter was successfully created.'
else
render :new
end
end
I'm building simple web app where people can share their thought / pictures / so on. It has just two controllers Post, and nested in it Comments. Generally, at the moment all works perfectly, users can add, edit and delete posts the same way as comments. The thing I'm trying to do, and have big troubles with, is possibility to Edit comments without redirecting to the Edit Comment View - so to be able to do it from the "posts#show" level, the same way as comments actually are being created. I think it just would look much more nicer... Here are my:
posts_controller.rb
class PostsController < ApplicationController
before_action :find_post, only: [:show, :edit, :update, :destroy]
def index
#posts = Post.all.order(created_at: :desc)
end
def new
#post = Post.new
end
def create
#post = Post.new(post_params)
if #post.save
redirect_to #post
else
render 'new'
end
end
def show
#comments = #post.comments
end
def edit
end
def update
if #post.update(post_params)
redirect_to #post
else
render 'edit'
end
end
def destroy
#post.destroy
redirect_to root_path
end
private
def find_post
#post = Post.find(params[:id])
end
def post_params
params.require(:post).permit(:title, :description)
end
end
comments_controller.rb
class CommentsController < ApplicationController
before_action :find_post, only: [:create, :edit, :update, :destroy]
def create
#comment = #post.comments.create(comment_params)
if #comment.save
redirect_to #post
else
render 'new'
end
end
def edit
#comment = #post.comments.find(params[:id])
end
def update
#comment = #post.comments.find(params[:id])
#comment.update_attributes(comment_params)
if #comment.save
redirect_to #post
else
render 'edit'
end
end
def destroy
#comment = #post.comments.find(params[:id])
#comment.destroy
redirect_to #post
end
private
def find_post
#post = Post.find(params[:post_id])
end
def comment_params
params.require(:comment).permit(:content)
end
end
View show.html.haml - for post
%h1 Show page
%h3= #post.title
%p= #post.description
=link_to "Edit memory", edit_post_path
=link_to "Delete memory", post_path, method: :delete
%h4 Share your thoughts about the memory
- #comments.each do |comment|
%p= comment.content
=link_to "Edit thought", edit_post_comment_path(#post, comment)
=link_to "Delete thought", post_comment_path(#post, comment), method: :delete
= simple_form_for([#post, #post.comments.build]) do |c|
= c.input :content
= c.submit "Share thought"
View edit.html.haml - for comments (the one I'd like to get rid of / nest somehow to the view shown above)
= simple_form_for([#post, #comment]) do |c|
= c.input :content
= c.submit "Update thought"
I believe there is a simple solution, however despite the fact that I've been reading a lot about possible solution, for a newbie like me it's still difficult to figure out how this should be programed.
The terminology you're looking for is in-place editing, or inline editing
You'll either need a form or JQuery plugin to make any comment written by current_user (assuming you're using Devise) editable.
I've done this a little (you can sign up for free here, click "profile" and then edit the description):
--
The way you'd want to do it is something like this:
#app/assets/javascripts/application.js
# include x-editable scripts
$(".editable).editable([..options..]);
#app/views/posts/index.html.erb
<% #posts.each do |post| %>
<%= post.body %>
<% post.comments.each do |comment| %>
<% if comment.author == current_user %>
<%= content_tag :div, comment.body, class: "editable" %>
<% end %>
<% end %>
<% end %>
I've forgotten how we implemented the provided example; x-editable seems to be the rage now.
Here's how it works:
Include X-Editable (or other plugin) in your app
X-Editable will check for the presence of a .class or #id on an element
Providing such an element will allow X-Editable to make it editable
X-Editable then sends the completed request to the server, acting as Ajax
Looks like there's an x-editable-rails gem you can use:
#Gemfile
gem `x-editable-rails`
#app/assets/javascripts/application.js
#= require editable/bootstrap-editable
#= require editable/rails
#app/views/posts/index.html.erb
<% #posts.each do |post| %>
<% post.comments.each do |comment| %>
<%= editable comment, :body if comment.author == current_user %>
<% end %>
<% end %>

<% end %>
When i click the index page to create a new link, the index page showing error like
NoMethodError in Enr/rds/surv_rdsap_xrefs#index
undefined method `errors' for nil:NilClass
Thanks for the suppport and please suggest me to rectify the error. I am new to ROR. Thanks
Your error reveals that the rendering of the index template is causing the error, which means you're rendering the form for the new survey (the code snippet above) in the index template. This is fine, but if you're going to do that, you'll have to instantiate a new survey in index, as well as in new.
At the simplest, you could just copy the code in new to index:
def index
#enr_rds_surv_rdsap_xrefs = Enr::Rds::SurvRdsapXref.paginate(page: params[:page])
#enr_rds_surv_rdsap_xref = Enr::Rds::SurvRdsapXref.new
end
def new
#enr_rds_surv_rdsap_xref = Enr::Rds::SurvRdsapXref.new
end
To keep your code a bit DRYer you might change where the new instance is created. A pattern you'll often see is something similar to:
before_filter :build_record, :only => [:new, :index]
protected
def build_record
#survey = YourSurvey.new
end
This way you don't even need to write the new/index methods if you don't have any other logic.
Do you also set #survey in the new action in your controller? The error means that when the view is rendered #survey is nil, so there must be a problem with setting that instance variable.
Do you get the error when you go to the 'new' view or when you try to submit the form (create)?
The form contains <%= pluralize#enr_rds_surv_rdsap_xref.errors.count, "error") %>
This line of the code is the problem. You are lacking a "(" between the pluralize and the #enr...
Explained: RoR thinks that the object is: pluralize#enr... instead of the # All alone, and he has no errors for this kind of object.
