I need to update my Xcode 8.2 to Xcode 9. I upgraded my OS to macOs High Sierra 10.13. Then I went to Mac App Store and tried downloading it and the update button keeps spinning for infinity. I searched google and stackoverflow and apparently this is a known bug going back ages. One of the solution suggested that I should delete Xcode application and then try the download/update button again in App Store.
See Here Unable to update to Xcode 8.3
So, if I am going to completely remove Xcode application from my computer then I was thinking I should cleanup my comp and remove unnecessary Xcode files that I don't need and they will be recreated upon a new install. These are huge folders and looks like related to my Xcode development activities. Can I safely delete them?
Can I delete the entire ~\library\Developer folder?
To answer my own question YES its completely safe to delete ~/Library/Developer folder if you plan to completely remove your existing Xcode and install a new version. Actually its highly recommended you do so. Everything worked and all projects compile.
The newly created one was only 772MB. Come on Apple! What a waste of space that was.

I have recently downloaded new Xcode 11 GM Seed 2 so that i can update my project to support Dark mode. (I am already on MacOS Catalina latest beta version-19A558d).
I have my project(workspace with pods) working 100% fine with Xcode 10.2. When I have started building same project with newly installed Xcode 11 GM Seed 2, It randomly freeze while building with title Building X of Y tasks. It randomly stops building any file at anytime. As per my different observations, It stops building while it is building library from my Pods.
I have already tried cleaning, manually deleting derived data files. Also, i have tried by reinstalling Xcode. Also restarted Mac to give try. All trial get failed. If anyone faced same issue and know the solution, please post here.
Disable the Swift Optimizer for SwiftSoup:
I were trying all day hard to solve this issue. Finally issue get resolved.
Actually i tried to build/compile the app via Terminal. Then i found that it got struck/freezed while compiling the files from installed 3rd party libraries from pods. The 3rd party library named SwiftSoup was making problem. Then i removed that pod, and commented out the code related to that. And tried compiling/building the app again. And It worked successfully this time.
UPDATE:
I followed #Paul's Answer, that works without removing pod, keeping same pod and code working. Just need to update settings as described by him. But make sure, that you need to change this setting every time you update your pods.
When I tried to update to Xcode 8.3, the following happened in App Store (it has been like this for over an hour):
So it just says "loading" and nothing happens.
What I already tried:
Mac restart
Logoff and Login to the App Store
Any ideas?
btw: My Apple membership expires in 5 days - could this be a problem?
Xcode 8.3 requires macOs Sierra
release notes Xcode 8
I was facing the same issue with macOs El Capitan
Just sign in on developer.apple.com, and go to https://developer.apple.com/download/more/, you can find Xcode8.3 there and download. Good luck!
Well, there's a challenging way to modify and run it if you get it from the Developers portal. :) Not as your primary Xcode instance, but experiments are possible. :))
I upgraded my mid-2012 mac book pro to Sierra. But still was stuck with spinner.
This helped solve it. - (link to the apple discussion forum)
"Going to Applications in Finder and moving Xcode to the trash bin fixed the problem for me. As soon as I entered in my password to confirm moving Xcode to the trash, the App Store prompted me on whether or not I wanted to cancel the update or delete the app. I opted to delete Xcode, and the App Store immediately began downloading the update."
If you have an Apple Developer account, download the latest xcode directly from here: http://adcdownload.apple.com/Developer_Tools/Xcode_8.3/Xcode_8.3.xip.
Note: if you are unable to install the latest OS, at this time: OSSierra, then you will not be able to be able to install Xcode 8.3 to my knowledge (I was not able to. I had to get a new computer, which I had to do).
wait for 8-10 minutes without pressing pause or cancel or so.
just wait. and it will start while you eating popcorn.
even though it not started to update and stuck at 0kb, the term you have to focus is "patience".
Just go to App Store and click on Store -> Check for Unfinished Downloads.
I'm getting the following error and don't understand why I am getting it. I'm running Xcode 7.2.1 which is the normal released version and was able to upload builds earlier this week with this same Xcode version so this error makes no sense. Has anyone else encountered it or figured a way to get rid of it? I've tried the following:
Restarted Xcode
Deleted Derived Data
Restarted Computer
Ran Build Clean
Ran Build Folder Clean
Incremented versions on the build.
Any other ideas on how to fix this?
I've figured out what was wrong with it, and it is definitely my fault. As stated in the error message:
Don't submit apps with Beta software including OS X builds
Xcode was on the correct version but my OSX had auto updated the night prior to this appearing, and put my entire system on a beta. There is no easy way to revert if you didn't do a time-machine save prior to updating (mine happened automatically, so I definitely didn't). Now I'm stuck building on my back-up mac until Apple releases 10.21.4 publicly.
Thanks for the help, lesson learned. Don't register for any beta software unless you have Time Machine setup to automatically backup your machine.
UPDATE
Reinstalling your OS when you are on BETA is actually quite easy.
Go to the Mac App Store
Search for "OS X El Capitan" or whatever OS you need
Hit the Download button
Now you can reinstall your OS. Stupid easy.
I made the mistake of upgrading xcode and its been painful.
I'm at my wits end trying to satisfy apples demand of "Rebuilding my app using the current public (GM) version of Xcode and resubmitting it."
some details Xcode 7.0.1 - Invalid Swift Support - cocoapods HOW TO FIX?
As far as I know I'm using the current public (GM). I'm using version 7.0.1 (7A1001), please someone tell me if thats not the current public (GM).
I've tried just about every "solution" here, the error still persists.
Now I'm down to reinstalling xcode as a last grasp.
Of course this process is cloaked in mystery, how do you go about "reinstalling" xcode? I've heard that xcode has a "large footprint" so it's just not a matter of trashing the app, is it?
Yes, it is just a matter of trashing the app and re-installing the older app.
Delete the Xcode, empty the trash. Make sure you get all copies, even ones outside the Applications folder.
Either get a fresh versio from the Apple app store or get an older version from the downloads.
To get the older version 6.4 from: https://developer.apple.com/downloads/ You will need to sign-in with your developer id.
Excuse my ignorance, but I've not done an Xcode upgrade before. I thought I'd simply go to apple, download the .dmg file, double click it, and voila! However, after doing this (the .dmg file is a 1.56GB file), if I run Xcode by clicking the icon at the bottom of the screen, when it loads, if I check the version, it still says 4.3.2. So obviously, I haven't done something needing to be done.
Also, I'm not duplicating the message anymore so I can't give an exact quote, but when launching Xcode I got a message that it didn't recognize the device. I presume this is my iPad, which was provisioned as a development device before I upgraded the iOS to version 6 on it.
Perhaps my question can be answered by simply pointing me to an appropriate document. The websites I'm finding all seem to be about problems after upgrading. I haven't got that far yet, I don't think.
Download it from the App Store.
If you have downloaded the DMG file, you will need to double click on it so it can mount the image file .In that dmg file there is the xcode file you need and copy that into your applications folder. If you already have a xcode app in there it will override it.
Otherwise if you are not a developer, it is indeed easier to just download it from the app store. Good Luck:-)
