Set X and Y values of UILabel using NSLayout - ios

I am adding a UI Label and I am trying out programmatic UI code. I set up my label using this code:
let titleLabel: UILabel = {
let lb = UILabel()
lb.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
lb.textAlignment = .center
lb.numberOfLines = 1
lb.textColor = UIColor.black
lb.font=UIFont.systemFont(ofSize: 22)
lb.backgroundColor = UIColor.white
return lb
and then added constraints using this code:
func setupTitleLabel() {
titleLabel.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
titleLabel.heightAnchor.constraint(equalToConstant: 100).isActive = true
titleLabel.widthAnchor.constraint(equalToConstant: 200).isActive = true
titleLabel.centerXAnchor.constraint(equalTo: titleLabel.superview!.centerXAnchor).isActive = true
titleLabel.centerYAnchor.constraint(equalTo: titleLabel.superview!.centerYAnchor).isActive = true
}
I call this function later on. However, I am not sure how to change to X and Y values. Currently, it is set to the middle of the page for both X and Y, but how would I move it up to the top.

As I said in my comment, you are using titleLabel.superview!.centerYAnchor wrongly if you need pin your label to top of your label superview you need use titleLabel.superview!.topAnchor instead
replace this
titleLabel.centerYAnchor.constraint(equalTo: titleLabel.superview!.centerYAnchor).isActive = true
by this
titleLabel.centerYAnchor.constraint(equalTo: titleLabel.superview!.topAnchor).isActive = true

What I understand the case is that the label is in the centerX and centerY, and you want it to be at the top of the superView later.If so,I think you can use var centerYAnchor: NSLayoutConstraint?
centerYAnchor = titleLabel.centerYAnchor.constraint(equalTo: titleLabel.superview!.centerYAnchor)
centerYAnchor.isActive = true
And when you want to change the label at the top later,you can set centerYAnchor.isActive = false and set the label's topAnchor.
titleLabel.topAnchor.constraint(equalTo: titleLabel.superview!.topAnchor).isActive = true

Why I cannot modify a UIScrollview leading edge programmatically?

I'm fairly new to iOS app development. I'm trying to make an iOS app which will have an horizontal scroll view with labels added as subviews which exhibit a snapping behaviour. I'm using UIKit and auto layouts (Swift 5, Xcode 12.01) for a programmatically build UI. I have three labels to be added to the scroll view, one is centred, one is offset 500 pt from the scrollview centre (right) and one is at -500 from the centre (left)
When I try to set the scrollview trailing anchor referring to the label on the right I have no problems. However, when I try to set the leading edge referring to the label on the left (leading edge), I encounter the error: [LayoutConstraints] Unable to simultaneously satisfy constraints.
Am I missing something?
I attach my code below:
// Create scroll view on top of bottom view
func createScrollView() -> UIScrollView {
let myScrollView = UIScrollView()
myScrollView.isScrollEnabled = true
myScrollView.backgroundColor = .red
myScrollView.showsHorizontalScrollIndicator = true
view.addSubview(myScrollView)
// Constraints
myScrollView.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
myScrollView.leadingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: view.leadingAnchor, constant: 0).isActive = true
myScrollView.trailingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: view.trailingAnchor).isActive = true
myScrollView.bottomAnchor.constraint(equalTo: bottomView.firstBaselineAnchor).isActive = true
myScrollView.heightAnchor.constraint(equalToConstant: 50).isActive = true
// Add some elements to the view
let label1 = UILabel()
let label2 = UILabel()
let label3 = UILabel()
label1.text = "EV 0."
label1.font = .systemFont(ofSize: 20)
label1.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
label2.text = "ISO"
label2.font = .systemFont(ofSize: 20)
label2.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
label3.text = "SNAP"
label3.font = .systemFont(ofSize: 20)
label3.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
// Add labels to scroll view
myScrollView.addSubview(label1)
myScrollView.addSubview(label2)
myScrollView.addSubview(label3)
// Add constraint
label1.centerYAnchor.constraint(equalTo: myScrollView.centerYAnchor).isActive = true
label2.centerYAnchor.constraint(equalTo: myScrollView.centerYAnchor).isActive = true
label3.centerYAnchor.constraint(equalTo: myScrollView.centerYAnchor).isActive = true
label1.centerXAnchor.constraint(equalTo: myScrollView.centerXAnchor, constant: -300).isActive = true
label2.centerXAnchor.constraint(equalTo: myScrollView.centerXAnchor, constant: 300).isActive = true
label3.centerXAnchor.constraint(equalTo: myScrollView.centerXAnchor, constant: 0).isActive = true
// Add last constraint in the scroll view
myScrollView.leadingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: label1.leadingAnchor, constant: -500).isActive = true
myScrollView.trailingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: label2.trailingAnchor, constant: 500).isActive = true
return myScrollView
Thanks a lot for your help!!!

Can't set UIView's background color Swift 5

I have a view that I initialise like this:
var view: UIView! = {
var perm = UIView()
perm.backgroundColor = UIColor.black
// enable auto layout
perm.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
return perm
}()
After that I add a label as a subview to view. The label is initialised like this:
var title: UILabel! = {
let perm = UILabel()
perm.textColor = UIColor.white
perm.numberOfLines = 0
perm.font = UIFont.boldSystemFont(ofSize: 20)
// enable auto layout
perm.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
return perm
}()
After that I add programmatically some constraints. When I run the app the title is displayed in the right position, but the view's background color has not been set.
EDIT
This is how I've set the constraints:
view.addSubview(title)
view.leadingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: leadingAnchor).isActive = true
view.trailingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: trailingAnchor).isActive = true
view.bottomAnchor.constraint(equalTo: image.bottomAnchor).isActive = true
title.leadingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: title.superview!.leadingAnchor, constant: 20).isActive = true
title.trailingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: title.superview!.trailingAnchor, constant: -20).isActive = true
title.bottomAnchor.constraint(equalTo: title.superview!.bottomAnchor, constant: -20).isActive = true
view needs a height
view.heightAnchor.constraint(equalToConstant:200).isActive = true
OR For label height plus top and bottom padding 40
title.topAnchor.constraint(equalTo:view.topAnchor, constant:20).isActive = true

UIStackView container view height based on subviews

Here is my simple example. I have 1 vertical stack view with 1 subview. I want that subviews height to be based on the intrinsic height of the label within it, so that I can maintain a dynamic height for the entire stack view. How can this be done? Thanks
I think you did it right. But here is the keys:
Don't set height for stackView.
Set label top, bottom, left, trailing constraint to view.
Run. It should be okay on simulator.
If you found label's height seems not wrapping (neither both on storyboard or simulator), then change label's Vertical Content Hugging Priority to 750.
Try this code:
class DyanmicTextLabelViewController: UIViewController {
private var didAddConstraint = false
private let label: UILabel = {
let view = UILabel()
view.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
view.setContentHuggingPriority(.required, for: .vertical)
view.setContentCompressionResistancePriority(.required, for: .vertical)
view.text = "Layout anchors let you create constraints in an easy-to-read, compact format. They expose a number of methods for creating different types of constraints, as shown in Listing 13-1."
view.numberOfLines = 0
return view
}()
private lazy var container: UIView = {
let view = UIView()
view.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
view.addSubview(label)
view.backgroundColor = .red
return view
}()
private lazy var stackview : UIStackView = {
let view = UIStackView()
view.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
view.axis = .horizontal
view.distribution = .fill
view.addArrangedSubview(container)
return view
}()
override func loadView() {
super.loadView()
view.addSubview(stackview)
view.setNeedsUpdateConstraints()
view.backgroundColor = .white
}
override func updateViewConstraints() {
super.updateViewConstraints()
if didAddConstraint == false {
didAddConstraint = true
// stackview constraints
stackview.leftAnchor.constraint(equalTo: view.leftAnchor).isActive = true
let topAnchor = stackview.topAnchor.constraint(equalTo: view.topAnchor)
topAnchor.constant = 20
topAnchor.isActive = true
stackview.rightAnchor.constraint(equalTo: view.rightAnchor).isActive = true
// label constraint
// example for giving label a left padding
let labelLeft = label.leftAnchor.constraint(equalTo: container.leftAnchor)
labelLeft.constant = 16.0
labelLeft.isActive = true
label.topAnchor.constraint(equalTo: container.topAnchor).isActive = true
label.rightAnchor.constraint(equalTo: container.rightAnchor).isActive = true
label.bottomAnchor.constraint(equalTo: container.bottomAnchor).isActive = true
}
}
}
The important part here is the initialization of stackview, label & constraint set on label
label initialization
private let label: UILabel = {
let view = UILabel()
view.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
view.setContentHuggingPriority(.required, for: .vertical)
view.setContentCompressionResistancePriority(.required, for: .vertical)
view.text = "Layout anchors let you create constraints in an easy-to-read, compact format. They expose a number of methods for creating different types of constraints, as shown in Listing 13-1."
view.numberOfLines = 0
return view
}()
stackview initialization
private lazy var stackview : UIStackView = {
let view = UIStackView()
view.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
view.axis = .horizontal
view.distribution = .fill
view.addArrangedSubview(container)
return view
}()
label constraint
// label constraint
// example for giving label a left padding
let labelLeft = label.leftAnchor.constraint(equalTo: container.leftAnchor)
labelLeft.constant = 16.0
labelLeft.isActive = true
label.topAnchor.constraint(equalTo: container.topAnchor).isActive = true
label.rightAnchor.constraint(equalTo: container.rightAnchor).isActive = true
label.bottomAnchor.constraint(equalTo: container.bottomAnchor).isActive = true
This settings could be easily translated to storyboard.

How to make auto-layout constraint dependent on multiple other anchors?

How can auto-layout be used to make a view's height equal to the sum of two other view's heights?
For example:
viewA.heightAnchor.constraint(equalTo: ...),
viewB.heightAnchor.constraint(equalTo: ...),
viewC.heightAnchor.constraint(equalTo: viewA.heightAnchor + viewB.heightAnchor)
Is there a solution that does not involve setting a constant value and recalculating it on every view bounds change?
You can, but only with the help of some helper views, I think. See this example playground I just now cooked up that achieves this:
import Foundation
import UIKit
import PlaygroundSupport
let vc = UIViewController()
vc.view = UIView()
vc.view.backgroundColor = .white
let viewA = UIView()
let viewB = UIView()
let viewC = UIView()
viewA.backgroundColor = .red
viewB.backgroundColor = .green
viewC.backgroundColor = .blue
viewA.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
viewB.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
viewC.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
vc.view.addSubview(viewA)
vc.view.addSubview(viewB)
vc.view.addSubview(viewC)
let helperViewA = UIView()
let helperViewB = UIView()
helperViewA.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
helperViewB.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
helperViewA.isHidden = true
helperViewB.isHidden = true
vc.view.addSubview(helperViewA)
vc.view.addSubview(helperViewB)
viewA.bottomAnchor.constraint(equalTo: vc.view.bottomAnchor).isActive = true
viewA.leadingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: vc.view.leadingAnchor).isActive = true
viewA.trailingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: viewB.leadingAnchor).isActive = true
viewA.heightAnchor.constraint(equalToConstant: 20.0).isActive = true
viewB.bottomAnchor.constraint(equalTo: vc.view.bottomAnchor).isActive = true
viewB.widthAnchor.constraint(equalTo: viewA.widthAnchor, multiplier: 1.0).isActive = true
viewB.trailingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: vc.view.trailingAnchor).isActive = true
viewB.heightAnchor.constraint(equalToConstant: 40.0).isActive = true
viewA.heightAnchor.constraint(equalTo: helperViewA.heightAnchor, multiplier: 1.0).isActive = true
viewB.heightAnchor.constraint(equalTo: helperViewB.heightAnchor, multiplier: 1.0).isActive = true
helperViewA.bottomAnchor.constraint(equalTo: helperViewB.topAnchor).isActive = true
viewC.widthAnchor.constraint(equalToConstant: 100).isActive = true
viewC.topAnchor.constraint(equalTo: helperViewA.topAnchor).isActive = true
viewC.bottomAnchor.constraint(equalTo: helperViewB.bottomAnchor).isActive = true
helperViewA.leadingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: viewC.leadingAnchor).isActive = true
helperViewA.trailingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: viewC.trailingAnchor).isActive = true
helperViewB.leadingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: viewC.leadingAnchor).isActive = true
helperViewB.trailingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: viewC.trailingAnchor).isActive = true
viewC.centerXAnchor.constraint(equalTo: vc.view.centerXAnchor).isActive = true
viewC.centerYAnchor.constraint(equalTo: vc.view.centerYAnchor).isActive = true
vc.view.frame.size = CGSize(width: 375, height: 667)
PlaygroundPage.current.liveView = vc.view
The idea is that you have two helper views stacked vertically on each other, connected by the top one's bottomAnchor and the bottom one's topAnchor. You then set each of these helper views' heights to be equal to your viewA and viewB heights. Then, your viewC can be attached to the top view's topAnchor and the bottom view's bottomAnchor, which gives the result of viewC being the height of viewA's height plus viewB's height.

Swift iOS -How to set UIView's Height Anchor <= To A Label's Intrinsic Text Size? 'NSLayoutConstraint' is not convertible to 'Bool'

I have a programmatic view with a label inside of it that I'm pinning to the bottom of the navBar. There will be dynamic text inside of the label and I want the view the label is in to be the at least 64 pts or bigger if the height of text makes it smaller.
The intrinsic size of the text from this label sets the view at a noticeable height.
setViewAndLabel(dynamicText: "Unknown Error\nPlease try your request again\Error: 123")
However the intrinsic size of this text makes the height to small:
setViewAndLabel(dynamicText: "Message Deleted!")
The Message Deleted! should be more along the lines of:
I used some return keys to set it like that but I don't think that's the correct way to go because different messages will get generated:
setViewAndLabel(dynamicText: "\nMessage Deleted!\n")
I also tried:
if myView.heightAnchor.constraint(lessThanOrEqualToConstant: 64){
myView.heightAnchor.constraint(equalToConstant: 64).isActive = true
}
But I get the error:
'NSLayoutConstraint' is not convertible to 'Bool'
What's the best way to set the height for the view the label is in to a minimum height?
var myLabel: UILabel(){
let label = UILabel()
label.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
label.textColor = UIColor.white
label.font = UIFont(name: "Helvetica-Regular", size: 19)
label.numberOfLines = 0
label.sizeToFit()
label.textAlignment = .center
return label
}
let myView:UIView = {
let view = UIView()
view.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
return view
}()
override func viewWillAppear(_ animated: Bool)
super.viewWillAppear(animated){
setViewAndLabel(dynamicText: //some text will get set here)
}
func setViewAndLabel(dynamicText: String){
view.addSubView(myView)
myView.backgroundColor = UIColor.red
myView.topAnchor.constraint(equalTo: view.topAnchor, constant: 64).isActive = true
View.widthAnchor.constraint(equalTo: view.widthAnchor, constant: 0).isActive = true
myView.addSubView(myLabel)
myLabel.text = dynamicText
myLabel.topAnchor.constraint(equalTo: myView.topAnchor, constant: 0).isActive = true
myLabel.widthAnchor.constraint(equalTo: myView.widthAnchor, constant: 0).isActive = true
myView.bottomAnchor.constraint(equalTo: myLabel.bottomAnchor, constant: 0).isActive = true
//this if statement doesn't work
if myView.heightAnchor.constraint(lessThanOrEqualToConstant: 64){
viewForErrorLabel.heightAnchor.constraint(equalToConstant: 64).isActive = true
}
}
This is how you have to set up your constraints:
view.addSubview(myView)
myView.topAnchor.constraint(equalTo: topLayoutGuide.bottomAnchor).isActive = true
myView.leadingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: view.leadingAnchor).isActive = true
myView.trailingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: view.trailingAnchor).isActive = true
myView.heightAnchor.constraint(greaterThanOrEqualToConstant: 64).isActive = true
myView.addSubview(myLabel)
myLabel.topAnchor.constraint(equalTo: myView.topAnchor).isActive = true
myLabel.leadingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: myView.leadingAnchor).isActive = true
myLabel.trailingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: myView.trailingAnchor).isActive = true
myLabel.bottomAnchor.constraint(equalTo: myView.bottomAnchor).isActive = true
You do not need to check the label's height at all. You can simply always create that height greater than or equal constraint for myView and its height will never be smaller than 64pt (or whatever value you set it to) - even if the label contains a very short text.
