I have a Grails application that I run as a Linux service. Basically I create a symlink from /etc/init.d/mygrailsservice to mygrailsservice.jar.
I want to increase the amount of OS memory allocated to the service.
How do I configure this?

I'm Setting up Log4j2 in a Spring-boot application. I now want to create a /log directory exactly where the .jar file is located.
This is needed as we start the java application from a startup script and the configuration should work on both windows and unix developer machines as well as a server.
I already tried with:
<RollingFile name="FileAppender" fileName="./logs/mylog.log"
filePattern="logs/mylog-%d{yyyy-MM-dd}-%i.log">
which just creates a log folder at the directory where the jar gets started.
then I read i should use .\log/mylog.log as .\ points to the directory of the jar file.
But then it just creates a folder called .\log.
I also tried with configuration with jvm arguments and calling them at the log4j2.xml with: ${logFile}. Now a directory gets created called '${logFile}.
The only ${} command working is the directory of the log4j configuration file. But as this is inside the jar it just gets me a pretty useless folder structure

EDIT: In the End what I did was setting up two configuration files, log4j2.xml and log4j2-prod.xml
The log4j2.xml took the system property as Vikas Sachdeva mentioned, while the prod.xml got the location hard coded.
Not really the solution I was looking for but made it work.
One solution is to pass log directory location through system properties.
Configuration file will look like -
<RollingFile name="FileAppender" fileName="${sys:basePath}/mylog.log"
filePattern="${sys:basePath}/mylog-%d{yyyy-MM-dd}-%i.log">
Now, pass VM argument basePath with absolute path of directory containing JAR file -
java -jar myapp.jar -DbasePath=/home/ubuntu/app
I've setup a data pipeline using divolte.io to stream click data from website to a server. I'm not sure how can I do this for multiple websites because all the streams can get mixed up. Any ideas on how to do this?
On the same server, you need to bind to different ports
Create more than one config file, setting divolte.global.server.port to different values, then run the application with those configs.
In order to set a new config file, it actually needs to be in it's own directory
Divolte Collector will try to find configuration files at startup in the configuration directory. Typically this is the conf/ directory nested under the Divolte Collector installation. Divolte Collector will try to locate the configuration directory at ../conf relative to the startup script. The configuration directory can be overridden by setting the DIVOLTE_CONF_DIR environment variable. If set, the value will be used as configuration directory
Alternatively, you could run the exact same config within many containers/VMs, then use port mappings around that
I am attempting to get a Grails project working but need help setting it up. I have an Ubuntu server running on a VM that has Redis installed. The project won't run unless I create a config file that can use Redis on the Ubuntu server. This is the settings I pulled down from GitHub located in the grails-app/conf/Config.groovy file.

I was told I need to create a separate config file that will override these parameters so my project will talk to the ubuntu server on my machine. This is a noob question but where do I create a config file? I can't seem to find a .grails folder. I know I'm suppose to reference my config file, once i've created one, in the grails-app/conf/Config.groovy file

Look at the grails.config.locations specified in your Config.grooy and you can create any of those locations for creating the external Config file.
I prefer using the classpath route. Here is what I would do.
Create a folder (say appConfig) and place it in the tomcat/conf folder.
Add the application config file (proghorn-config.groovy in your case) to the folder, with the required configurations in the file.
Add the folder to the Tomcat classpath by updating either the tomcat/conf/catalina.properties or by creating the tomcat/bin/setenv.sh
The location of the .grails folder depends upon the user account running the container (Tomcat, Jetty, etc.) which hosts your Grails application.
For example on Debian 6 running Tomcat 6.x the location is:
/usr/share/tomcat6/.grails/
You can also use static paths as well:
file:/usr/local/tomcat/conf/myspecific-config.groovy
I'm trying to deploy a simple grails application on my test-server which is tomcat. I've built the WAR with grails war command so I've got a war file named: simplgrailsapp-0.1.war
When I deploy this to tomcat I'm getting a lot of errors which I'm going to resolve one-by-one. But the URL for the app from tomcat manager (mytestserver:8080/manager) is http://mytestserver:8080/simplegrailsapp-0.1/ which doesn't seem correct. Because when I run the app locally the url is: localhost:8080/simplegrailsapp
I've also tried to access the app by http://mytestserver:8080/simplegrailsapp but that doesn't work either.
How can I fix this?
By default, when you deploy a WAR to tomcat it will fall under the context of the name of the WAR file. So in your case, the context becomes simplegrailsapp-0.1. You can:
rename your war file to whatever you want the context to be before you deploy it
define a Context for the application in Tomcat
If you go with defining a context this can be added to the WAR file by creating a META-INF folder in the web-app folder of your project and creating the context.xml file there.
I've seen questions and answers about how to specify external .groovy and .properties files for Grails config that are outside of the WAR file using grails.config.locations, but we need external config that isn't on the server on which the container (Tomcat) is running.
(It does have a local FS, but it is not persistient and is identical for all deployment environments - hence the need to override it external to the WAR, container and server).
So, can I use http: URLs for grails.config.locations ?
Yes. The following works:
Add this in Config.groovy and pass PARAM1 using -D to the JVM to specify the external URL for the config file.
grails.config.locations = ["url:" + System.properties["PARAM1"]]
I am not aware of any built in functionality that would allow you to specify URL for grails.config. However, it seems like something that you could implement yourself:
define your URL(s) that you want to use to d/l the Congif.groovy file that is included in your WAR
in that same Config.groovy script, write code to download the file to a specific location on your server's file system (see this article)
set your grails.config.locations to point to the file system location that you wrote the Config.groovy file to.
I haven't tried it but seems like it would work.
