I have a view controller with a table view and a tab bar controller. I perform a segue when one of the cells is tapped in the didSelectRow method. I then pass the data in prepareForSegue. The segue is set up in the storyboard from the view controller to the tab bar and its kind is "Show".
When the tab bar controller is displayed (well, one of its view controllers), the content is at the very top of the view. The problem is fixed after I switch tab bars and then go back to the original tab bar. Any way to fix this?
Are you using interface builder?
Open storyboard where you defined this view controller.
Then in Attributes Inspector DESELECT the Extend Edges Under Top Bars property.
Alternatively you can make your view snap to the Top Layout Guide instead of the root view itself.

See the image below. I've Tab Bar Controller. I've embedded Table view in Navigation Controller. I've further child Table view & two UI views.
As you can see Navigation Bar appears for some view while it doesn't appear for other. Why is this? How to fix it.
I've not added any code, just trying it in storyboard.
It looks like it is showing the navigation bar just not the title of the other view controllers. That's where you are seeing <Back. If you set the Title field on the view controller, you should see the title in that same area.
I'm trying to display the navigation bar at the top of the screen, but it's not showing in embed navigation controller.
Here is how it is in the storyboard:
And here it's in the simulator:
As you can see, I created a custom TabBar (following this tutorial) at the bottom of the screen so I can navigate between the different views.
I believe that I'm going to have to load the navbar programatically because the only solution that I found was to set the navigation controller as the initial view controller, but I already set another view as the initial one so I can't do that.
Issue :
When you instantiate a viewController using storyBoard identifier they wont come with free embedded navigation controller, even if you have added a NavigationController to them. As a result you are adding a viewController without navigation bar to your tab bar VC.
Solutions:
Solution1: If you want each child viewControllers to carry their own navigation controller hence their own navigation stack, provide a storyboard identifier to Navigation Controller behind your child viewControllers and instantiate the Navigation controller itself rather than ViewController. And add NavigationController as you tab bar looking VC's child. Because navigation controller loads the embdedded VC by default you will see your child VC with nav bar.
Solution2: All that you care for is only nav bar than add the Navigation Controller behind the VC containing tab bar looking View.
Hope it helps
Have you tried constraining the navigation bar to your view? Otherwise it can move offscreen.
You need to point the tab bar controller segue to the navigation controller of your view - otherwise if you point the segue straight to the view you're just loading the view without any navigation controller attached.
So I have a UITabBarController and it has three buttons on the bottom in my iOS app. I want to add another set of buttons at the top but not quite sure on how to do this. I tried adding a UINavigationBar and a navigation button, and adding a view in to it, adding just the buttons, ect.... but to no avail. It won't let me add anything to the UITabBarController. Is there a way to do this?
Thank you very much.
the simplest way to that is to creat 3 buttons side by side and set their frame the way they divide the top of screen to 3 equals. it means u can create a tab bar with buttons manually.
but there's another way. i think this answer would help u
Positioning UITabBar at the top
To use the navigation bar you need a navigation controller. Now depending on your needs your tab bar controller should be inside a navigation controller or the other way around. If you want to be able to navigate away from the tab bar controller (have a screen without the tab bar) you should embed your tab bar controller into a navigation controller. If you only need the navigation bar for some tabs of the tab bar controller or you still want the tab bar to be visible all the time you should embed all (or just the ones than need a navigation bar) your root view controllers for each tab in navigation controllers. Finally if you do not need the navigation behaviour you could just put a regular view in the view controller that needs the bar at the top and some buttons in it and make them look the way you want.
You can embed a view controller in a navigation controller in a storyboard by selecting the view controller and the going to Edit->Embed in->Navigation controller.
Select the Any Tabbar ViewController then above the Menu -> Editor -> Embed In -> Navigation Controller its select, if you get the Navigation Controller then if you add the Navigation Button at Top of the ViewController, example :
In my app, I have a collection view controller that is accessible by a modal type segue. What I am want is to have a top bar on the collection view controller. However, when I set a top bar in attributes tab of the collection view controller, it shows on the storyboard but not in simulator?
I think that What you are looking for is a UICollectionReusableView.
You should use UINavigationController.
If you're not using it, you could also add a UIToolbar.
That Storyboard section only sets the appearance in case you're using UINavigationController.
I want to add UITabBarController as root view of my UINavigation controller. The purpose of that is that I want to make similar navigation as Facebook app: Then user select contact on Contacts tab - pushed view with user details doesn't have TabBar.
So, I have navigation controller, tab bar as a root view or it and couple TableViewControllers inside this UITabBarController.
I have two major issues with that:
I can't assign title for navigation bar for root views of tabbar. If I open contact details I have navigation bar title and no tab bar (as I wanted). But if I select Contacts or Favorites - those views have empty navigation bar title. I've tried to set it on viewDidLoad and viewDidApper without any success
Even worse issue. When I press Favorites table view insets are broken. first cell is under navigation bar. First loaded tableview (in my case Contact) displayed correctly. Adjust scroll view insets is YES for both TableViews.
Update:
Solution storyboard (note property "Hide Bottom Bar on the Push" is switched to YES).
I was also struggling with UITabBarController + UINavigationController issue. When UITabBarController was contained by UINavigationController, content insets were acting really weird.
I would suggest to use navigation controllers inside UITabBarController and when next controller is pushed, set 'hidesBottomBarWhenPushed' on that controller to YES.
This would also solve setting navigation bar title, as navigation controller is closer to view controller. You can just use self.navigationItem.
If you leave it to current setup - UITabController contained within UINavigationController, then you need to modify navigationItem on controllers tabBarController (self.tabBarController.navigationItem). Note that best place for it would be in view controllers 'viewWillAppear' for every controller contained within UITabBarController, as they share one navigation item.
