I am trying to count distinct sessionIds from a measurement. sessionId being a tag, I count the distinct entries in a "parent" query, since distinct() doesn't works on tags.
In the subquery, I use a group by sessionId limit 1 to still benefit from the index (if there is a more efficient technique, I have ears wide open but I'd still like to understand what's going on).
I have those two variants:
> select count(distinct(sessionId)) from (select * from UserSession group by sessionId limit 1)

> select count(sessionId) from (select * from UserSession group by sessionId limit 1)

To my understanding, those should return the same number, since group by sessionId limit 1 already returns distinct sessionIds (in the form of groups).
And indeed, if I execute:
select * from UserSession group by sessionId limit 1
I have 3757 results (groups), not 4206.
In fact, as soon as I put this in a subquery and re-select fields in a parent query, some sessionIds have multiple occurrences in the final result. Not always, since there is 17549 rows in total, but some are.
This is the sign that the limit 1 is somewhat working, but some sessionId still get multiple entries when re-selected. Maybe some kind of undefined behaviour?
I can confirm that I get the same result.
In my experience using nested queries does not always deliver what you expect/want.
Depending on how you use this you could retrieve a list of all values for a tag with:
SHOW TAG VALUES FROM UserSession WITH KEY=sessionId
Or to get the cardinality (number of distinct values for a tag):
SHOW TAG VALUES EXACT CARDINALITY FROM UserSession WITH KEY=sessionId.
Which will return a single row with a single column count, containing a number. You can remove the EXACT modifier if you don't need to be exact about the result: SHOW TAG VALUES CARDINALITY on Influx Documentation.

i understand that the co and cu.contract types are not the same but i dont get why. can someone help me how this executeQuery of grails work. this is the only framework i used that have a static query execution but still need to follow a certain format.

I have this query that uses the DBContext entities I created.

When I remove x.SchoolYear == year the query works fine, but with it my query times out. The opposite of what I would expect to happen, I would expect the more you narrow a query down via Where clause constraints the less likely it would time out.
SchoolYear is a field in the query and the query itself is valid, when I perform the query within SQL Studio Manager it returns results in less than a second.
My confusion is, why would adding a constraint to the Where clause cause a query to time out??

I can almost guarantee that the query that EF produces and the query you're executing in SSMS are not the exact same SELECT statement. You probably wrote something like what Stephen Byrne has in his answer, i.e.
SELECT * from StudentReferrals WHERE ReferallID=1 AND SchoolYear='2015'
Right off the bat this query doesn't have a TOP qualifier on it which your EF query probably will due to the presence of the FirstOrDefault call.
Your first step should be to use something like SQL Profiler and grab the actual query that EF is generating. It's possible that with that query the optimizer is choosing to do a table scan because of the type of query that is being generated.
This likely won't make any difference, but you could also try rewriting your query as:

Well, to answer the question
why would adding a constraint to the Where clause cause a query to time out
The most likely cause is that you have a lot of data in the table, but no index covers the SchoolYear column. Therefore when you include in in a WHERE clause, this causes a Table Scan (because every row has to be checked to see if it should be included or not in the result set)
If you use SQL Server Management Studio and write the query manually for e.g
SELECT * from StudentReferrals WHERE ReferallID=1 AND SchoolYear='2015'
And then include the actual Execution Plan (Query->Include Actual Estimation Plan) then you will get the execution breakdown which will show you clearly if there is a Table Scan involved. If there is, create an index to "cover" the columns involved and it should fix your issue.
Update
Another possible solution could be to run DBCC FREEPROCCACHE to clear out any cached execution plans just in case for some reason SQL Server has picked something insane for whatever query is generated by Entity Framework.

In my grails application I have:
keywords = Keyword
.findAll("from Keyword where locale = '$locale' order by rand() ", [max:20])
Assume there are thousands of rows in the table that match the above criteria. But it seems the rows that are returned from the table are not random but in the order the rows are stored in Db although within the context of 20 rows that are returned they are random. For my application to work I want this query to return completely random rows from the table like it could be row id 203 , row id 3789, row id 9087, row id 789, and so on. How is that possible?
I use the following style:
Keyword.executeQuery('from Keyword order by rand()', [max: 9])
and it returns random rows from the entire table (we're using MySQL).
I'm not sure why execute query would behave differently from findAll though.
If you want to use a .withCriteria you can do that workaround:

It's important to say that sometimes ( depends on the Criteria query created ) it's necessary to add a 1=1 in sqlRestriction because it adds an "and" condition in generated query.
