How to Expand single particular section? - ios

I have used third party expandable table view named "ExpandableTableView",when i want to expand particular single section using custom button in my view.my code snippet is :

This will close perviously selected sections and will expand only one section at ta time.

appending new content and refreshing UITableView freezes my app for couple seconds in Swift

In my Swift app I have a UITableView and UITextView. The idea is simple, when user adds a text - it should appear at the bottom of the table view.
So I have an array of my object SingleMessage:

My problem is that when I type something, then presses the send button immediately and start typing again - the whole interface freezes for couple seconds and I don't even see the feedback from the keyboard. I think that the problem is that the table view has to be completely refreshed.
I'm using the interface above in the Chat component, so the problem occurs not only when user quickly types several messages in a row, but also when there're many incoming messages.
Is there any way of speeding up the whole interface, like for example add new cells at the bottom of the table view and avoid refreshing already existing ones?

reloadData is a very expensive operation. It rebuilds the entire table. You are better off keeping better track of your model, using insert and delete row functions when you want to perform those operations and refresh individual rows when they change.
A good strategy for this is to keep the old model, generate the new model, then compute the set of items that were created, moved, or removed and generate individual table operations for each case. Here is a bit of sample code:

I recommend to insert the row with insertRows(at rather than calling reloadData and scroll only if the cell is not visible.

UISegmentedControl not selecting when value changes

Previously I had an issue having an UISegmentedControl in tableview section header cell, and I wanted to listen to value changes in the main view controller.
I got this solved by using addTarget on the UISegmentedControl in the tableView:viewForHeaderInSection method, and this works.
First segment is default selected, and this works. When tapping on second segment, it reloads the tableview with other data, which is expected behaviour. However, first segment is still selected. Which means I cannot switch back to the original data in the table view.
Please see this video and you will see what I am trying to explain.

when tableView is reload that means viewForHeaderInSection is also reload. So, it is got initial stage after reloading.So you should choose different approach for it like you can add segmented control outside the tableview not as headerview or reload only rows or cells etc.
for example,

Manually call didSelectRowatIndexPath

I am trying to call didSelectRowAtIndexPath programmatically but am having trouble.

Gives me the following error:

Can anybody help me out? Thanks!
EDIT: From the responses below it sounds like im going about this the wrong way. How can I get the text of the selected items when a button is pressed (can be multiple selections)? I need to do this in a function dedicated to the button press.
You need to pass a valid argument, if you haven't declared indexPath in the calling scope then you'll get that error. Try:

Where ROW_YOU_WANT... are to be replaced with the row and section you wish to select.
However, you really shouldn't ever call this directly. Extract the work being done inside tableView:didSelectRowAtIndexPath: into separate methods and call those directly.
To address the updated question, you need to use the indexPathsForSelectedRows method on UITableView. Imagine you were populating the table cell text from an array of arrays of strings, something like this:

How can I loop through UITableView's cells?

I have n sections (known amount) and X rows in each section (unknown amount. Each row has a UITextField. When the user taps the "Done" button I want to iterate through each cell and do some conditional tests with the UITextField. If the tests pass data from each cell is written to a database. If not, then a UIAlert is shown. What is the best way to loop through the rows and if there is a more elegant solution to this please do advise.
If you only want to iterate through the visible cells, then use

You can collect an NSArray of all cells beforehands ONLY, when the whole list is visible. In such case, use [tableView visibleCells] to be safe.

Here's a completely different way of thinking about looping through UITableView rows...here's an example of changing the text that might populate your UITextView by looping through your array, essentially meaning your tableView cell data.
All cells are populated with data from some kind of model. A very common model would be using an NSObject and NSMutableArray of those objects. If you were in didSelectRowAtIndexPath, you would then want to do something like this to affect the row you're selecting after modifying the array above:

This code would remove all the UITextField's text in every row except the one you selected, leaving the text "selected" in the tapped cell's UITextField as long as you're using obj.someString to populate the field's text in cellForRowAtIndexPath or willDisplayRowAtIndexPath using YourObject and yourArray.
This type of "looping" doesn't require any conditions of visible cells vs non visible cells. If you have multiple sections populated by an array of dictionaries, you could use the same logic by using a condition on a key value. Maybe you want to toggle a cells imageView, you could change the string representing the image name. Tons of options to loop through the data in your tableView without using any delegated UITableView properties.

I would like to add my two cents to the matter even though this post is old. I created an array of type UITableViewCell and appended each new cell to it before returning it in cellForRowAt. See code below:

You have to make your own custom header row and put that as the first row of each section. Subclassing the UITableView or the headers that are already there will be a pain. Based on the way they work now, I am not sure you can easily get actions out of them. You could set up a cell to LOOK like a header, and setup the tableView:didSelectRowAtIndexPath to manually expand or collapse the section it is in.
I'd store an array of booleans corresponding the the "expended" value of each of your sections. Then you could have the tableView:didSelectRowAtIndexPath on each of your custom header rows toggle this value and then reload that specific section.

Also, you will need to update cellForRowAtIndexPath to return a custom header cell for the first row in any section.
Some sample code for animating an expand/collapse action using a table view section header is provided by Apple here: Table View Animations and Gestures
The key to this approach is to implement - (UIView *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView viewForHeaderInSection:(NSInteger)section and return a custom UIView which includes a button (typically the same size as the header view itself). By subclassing UIView and using that for the header view (as this sample does), you can easily store additional data such as the section number.
I got a nice solution inspired by Apple's Table View Animations and Gestures. I deleted unnecessary parts from Apple's sample and translated it into swift.

To implement the collapsible table section in iOS, the magic is how to control the number of rows for each section, or we can manage the height of rows for each section.
Also, we need to customize the section header so that we can listen to the tap event from the header area (whether it's a button or the whole header).
How to deal with the header? It's very simple, we extend the UITableViewCell class and make a custom header cell like so:

I have a better solution that you should add a UIButton into section header and set this button's size equal to section size, but make it hidden by clear background color, after that you are easily to check which section is clicked to expand or collapse
I ended up just creating a headerView that contained a button ( i saw Son Nguyen's solution above after the fact, but heres my code.. it looks like a lot but it's pretty simple):

I found another relatively simple way to solve that problem. By using this method we will not required to alter our cell which is almost always related to data array index, potentially causing mess in our view controller.
First, we add this following properties to our controller class:

The idea is to use sections within the table and set the number of rows in the section to 1 (collapsed) and 3(expanded) when the first row in that section is tapped
The table decides how many rows to draw based on an array of Boolean values
You'll need to create two rows in storyboard and give them the reuse identifiers 'CollapsingRow' and 'GroupHeading'

Some sample code for animating an expand/collapse action using a table view section header is provided by Apple at Table View Animations and Gestures.
The key to this approach is to implement
- (UIView *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView viewForHeaderInSection:(NSInteger)section
and return a custom UIView which includes a button (typically the same size as the header view itself). By subclassing UIView and using that for the header view (as this sample does), you can easily store additional data such as the section number.
I have done the same thing using multiple sections .
