Adding objects over camera view in barcode scanner app (Swift 3) - ios

This code basically initiates a camera view that acts as a barcode scanner. If you point your device at a barcode, it'll detect the barcode, and push the results to a text field.
This all works great. My question is - I would like to have some other elements showing on the screen. Right now, my entire screen is being overtaken by the camera, and so if you access this view, you either HAVE to scan a barcode, or you have to shut down the app.
I attempted to add other elements in the view just by dragging them from the object library, however, the camera seems to overlay those items, making them inaccessible.
There are two elements that I would like to add over top of the camera view. The first is an image, that looks like a "bracket" to give some indication of where the user should "fit" the barcode they are scanning.
The second is a button that allows the user to cancel out of the camera view.
So ultimately, my question is simply, how can I add elements over top of a camera view that is being initialized programmatically?

add a view in you view controller were you want your video preview to appear then simply add the preview layer to that layer instead of the whole view.
Like so:

iOS barcode scanner App crashes with no crash log

I am trying to make a barcode scanner app. As soon as the camera session begins, the app crashes within a few seconds.
I am unable to find the reason behind this. and, how to fix this one.

The camera doesnt get struck. But, the app gives an lldb everytime within a few seconds.

What should I do if my dismiss does not work after a QRcode scan?

I am going to scan the QR code in the webView.
QR code scans well and data can be read,
but the problem is, the camera screen won't close after scanning. I'm running a dismiss() function.

As you can see from my code, I'm trying to get the camera window down after reading the QR code.
But the camera screen is still on the frozen screen. No matter how long I wait, I can't see the web view screen. What's the problem?
The previewLayer is taking all the screen (bounds) and it is hiding the webview, so you should remove the previewLayer from the super layer in order to show the webview.
So the solution is to use this :
previewLayer.removeFromSuperlayer()
instead of
self.dismiss(animated: true, completion: nil)

QR Code Scanner won't work in Swift 4 [duplicate]

I've tried following and downloading this QR Code Scanner sample project by Simon Ng, https://www.appcoda.com/barcode-reader-swift/
However, when I try to simulate the sample project to my iPhone, the camera doesn't work. The camera privacy alert doesn't appear and the screen is just white. I've already enabled NSCamera privacy in Info.plist but it doesn't seem to do the job.

Disable rotation only for AVCaptureVideoPreviewLayer

I have a UITabBarController which has 4 items tabs. One of them is an AvCaptureVideoPreviewLayer (is a barcode scanner). What I would like to do is to disable autorotate only for AVCaptureVideoPreviewLayer (like iOS camera app) but not for the item bar which would rotate with the screen. It is a bit difficult situation because I think that the UITabBarConrtoller doesn't allow you easily to disable rotation.

I'm not 100% sure if I understand it correctly. But what you could do is:
1 - Subclass your UITabBarController and override shouldAutorotate with something like this:

This means that the selected UIViewController will define if it should autorotate.
2 - Now that the UITabBarController will ask its ViewControllers if it should autorotate, you have to override shouldAutorotate in every controller as well.

How can I simply scan barcodes on iPhone and/or iPad?
We produced the 'Barcodes' application for the iPhone. It can decode QR Codes. The source code is available from the zxing project; specifically, you want to take a look at the iPhone client and the partial C++ port of the core library. The port is a little old, from circa the 0.9 release of the Java code, but should still work reasonably well.
If you need to scan other formats, like 1D formats, you could continue the port of the Java code within this project to C++.
EDIT: Barcodes and the iphone code in the project were retired around the start of 2014.
As with the release of iOS7 you no longer need to use an external framework or library. The iOS ecosystem with AVFoundation now fully supports scanning almost every code from QR over EAN to UPC.
Just have a look at the Tech Note and the AVFoundation programming guide. AVMetadataObjectTypeQRCode is your friend.

There are two major libraries:
ZXing a library written in Java and then ported to Objective C / C++ (QR code only). And an other port to ObjC has been done, by TheLevelUp: ZXingObjC
ZBar an open source software for reading bar codes, C based.
According to my experiments, ZBar is far more accurate and fast than ZXing, at least on iPhone.
You can find another native iOS solution using Swift 4 and Xcode 9 at below. Native AVFoundation framework used with in this solution.

If support for the iPad 2 or iPod Touch is important for your application, I'd choose a barcode scanner SDK that can decode barcodes in blurry images, such as our Scandit barcode scanner SDK for iOS and Android. Decoding blurry barcode images is also helpful on phones with autofocus cameras because the user does not have to wait for the autofocus to kick in.
Scandit comes with a free community price plan and also has a product API that makes it easy to convert barcode numbers into product names.

The problem with iPhone camera is that the first models (of which there are tons in use) have a fixed-focus camera that cannot take picture in-focus for distances under 2ft. The images are blurry and distorted and if taken from greater distance there is not enough detail/information from the barcode.
A few companies have developed iPhone apps that can accomodate for that by using advanced de-blurring technologies. Those applications you can find on Apple app store: pic2shop, RedLaser and ShopSavvy. All of the companies have announced that they have also SDKs available - some for free or very preferential terms, check that one out.

If you are developing for iOS >10.2 with Swift 4 then you can try my solution. I mixed up this and this tutorial and came up with a ViewController which scans a QR Code and print() it out. I also have a Switch in my UI to toggle the camera light, might be helpful as well. For now I only tested it on a iPhone SE, please let me know if it doesn't work on newer iPhones.
