Use Rails logic with JSON data - ruby-on-rails

This may seem a pretty stupid question but I'm out of ideas at the moment and appreciate suggestions.
I have created a quiz interface that should change the question when NEXT button is clicked. The next question is loaded as JSON via AJAX call. Now the question contains HTML and I need to use Rails sanitize helper to filter tags.
I am not sure how I would use sanitize method on JSON data data acquired via AJAX call.
Please guide me.

The stress was not on JSON data. It was an honest mistake. The issue was the inability to use Rails logic on the data returned by AJAX call.

After some research and with the help of this answer, I was able to achieve what I wanted to.
All I had to do was to create a partial template (say, _question.html.erb) for the quiz question container with a form like this:

Create a route /question in routes.rb:

Now, create a question.js.erb to render the template with data:

The :remote => true option in the form does the trick here. It submits the form via ajax. Now, I can use Rails logic inside the partial template that gets the data via AJAX call.

Manage Single Rails form to other controller with create and update action

i'm new of rails. I use rails 3.0.5 .
I have an EMPLOYEE resource, but I would like to manage it with another extern controller (emp_profile_controller).
This extern controller (emp_profile_controller) manages some actions (index, new_employee, create_employee, edit_employee, update_employee ecc.. ) .
My routes for this controller are :

but it doesn't work.
If i manage only one action at time (create OR update), url_for works, for example :
form_for(#employee, :url => { :controller => "emp_profile", :action => "update_employee" }
but how can i handle both actions with one form ?

For now, i solved checking if object exist in the form file, if exist i set a variable with the UPDATE action path, else, i set a variable with the CREATE action path. So in the form_for statement i use url_for with the above variable.

I don't think it is the best way but it works and i can use only one form file.
As your model name and controller name are different, you can add this line to your routes
resources :employees,:controller=>"emp_profile",:path=>"emp_profile"
Change the method names of create_employee,update_employee to create and update respectively.
And change your form_for as given below

....
<% end %>
First of all, if you want to update something, this object should exist.
How do plan to find it out, I don't know (cause there different ways, depends on background).
There are 2 ways of solving this issue.
You can just check if object exist in view file, and if exists, renfer form for update, else for create.
Other way is to do it in controller.
For example:
def create
#employee=Employee.find_by_name('Jack Black') #for example
if #employee!=nil
render :action=> 'update'
else
#employee=Employee.new(:employee)
#employee.save
end
as i understand you want to execute two different actions on the same controller using a form submitting, this is not possible, you can only execute one action using a form submitting,
because the form is reaching to an action controller that action is suppose to render some view at the end of it's execution code, if it was possible to use to actions on form submitting how rails will know which view to render??? (that's why it's not possible).
if you want to do some more code execution at the controller, the right way to it is to call a method with some code in it that you want to execute, that method should be in the model,
because it is a good practice to write all massive chunks of code in the model and leave the controller as light from code as possible :-)

Add section to form by rendering a partial when link is clicked

For anyone who reads this, this is why it wasn't working as expected in update 2 below: Passing a local variable to a partial that is rendered after the view has already loaded
If anyone knows how to solve that issue, let me know please.

I updated the javascript with the quotation marks and it partially works...in the sense that the javascript is now functional and it will cause a string of text to appear on the page when I click the link as long as I have the partial only contain a string of text. However, when the partial includes the form fields code, something goes wrong.
If I just paste the following render code directly into the form in the new.html.erb view, it produces a new form section properly.

However, when I try to include similar code in comps_helper.rb and then reference it from the link_to, it does not work:
In comps_helper.rb:

In new.html.erb:

And I changed addRoundLink.js.erb to:

ORIGINAL QUESTION
First off, I'm new to rails. I've read and tried many solutions to similar questions but nothing has worked so far.
I created a form with rails form_for and fields_for. The form creates a new competition (comp). The competition has many rounds. The top half of the form (the form_for section) accepts the details about the competition as inputs and the bottom half of the form accepts details about each round (the fields_for section). The form works perfectly in this basic format.
I took all the code that is in the fields_for section and put it into a partial. My plan was to then create a "add new round" link to the bottom of the form that would simply display the partial above the link each time the link is pressed. This would add a new section to the form for a new round and allow the user to input as many rounds as they'd like. This is the part that I am struggling to make work.
I added this code to my comps_helper:
def addNewRound
render "add_round"
end
This renders the file /views/comps/_add_round.html.erb.
My question is: how do I get this to render in the form when a link is clicked. As far as I can get with the research I have done is:
<%= link_to "Add new round", { }, :remote => true %>
I don't exactly know what is supposed to go in the {} that will execute the addNewRound method. And I don't know what, if anything, I need to add to my comps_controller file.

You have to create an action in your controller
app/controllers/some_controller.rb

and define a route to this action.
routes.rb

then create a link to this action like that:

When you click this link it will find its way to your action and respond with js(javascript) because we told action to respond with only js.
At the end render the partial to anywhere you want in your view(*in this example to the some_id div*)

WARNING: Creating dynamic forms is a pain. You will face a lot of problems (like setting different ids for new form elements etc...). I highly recommend you to use ryan bates nested_form gem

How to upgrade the :update=>'div_id' option of remote_form_for from Rails 2 to Rails 3?

I can't figure out how to upgrade this code from Rails 2 to Rails 3:

I tried this:

It creates the new item but it fails in updating the content within <div id="div_id"></div> tags. It seems Rails 3 no longer supports the ":update" option for a remote form_for. Any suggestion?
You could use RJS, but that's being deprecated too (and for good reason). The simplified, best-practices way to handle this in Rails 3+ is as follows (assuming jQuery):

The ajax:success hook gets called by the jquery-ujs (aka jquery-rails, aka rails-ujs) remote link/form handler. See for yourself. There are lots of other callbacks/hooks available for you to use, too. If you wanted to make this even more flexible, you could use live instead of bind, and bind to a class that dictates where the ouput goes (e.g. "sidebar") and then all remote links/forms with the sidebar class would have their HTML response go to div#sidebar.
The most straightforward way to do this would be to write a javascript view template, e.g. create.js.erb which would look something like this:

(depending on your setup, of course, I'm assuming an #item variable and an associated _item partial)

coreyward is right. This is the RJS way which is more of the old fashioned Rails 2.x "Rails way". It's probably more familiar, but has issues. Your specific case is one of them, actually, as typically you might bind to an HTML element to update using the record's id (e.g. div #item_1), and in the create case there is no id available beforehand, complicating matters.
Binding via clientside JS eliminates this issue. RJS works in something of a vacuum, making assumptions about the state of the client's HTML and having no access to it.
I know the question is old but I when migrating to Rails 3 I found a pretty good way of doing this, so I thought I would post it here in case anyone else is in a similar solution.
In layouts/update_page.js.erb I put this file:

This is mainly used for searches that use remote, so in the index action in the controller, I just added the following code.

Since remote is being used, it will always try to use javascript first, so it will render the update_page.js.erb file from above. For us, we almost always use the div#list_div on our index pages, so we update that by the default, however if you need to update something different, you can pass in #update_div_id, and if you need to render a different page, you can pass in #partial_div.
To clarify, for a lot of things, it is probably better practice to use the callbacks, but I found this to be a much easier way, when we had to migrate over nearly 100 of these calls.

Rails: set a value using a link

I need help trying to create a link that submits an edit form.
Let's say I have a list of objects

When I click on the [button] I want to set "Own?" to True.

This is all about how you setup your controller actions. I'm not totally sure I understand how you want to use yours, but I have a similar case that I'll show you which I think you should be able to adapt to your situation.
In my case, I have a menu button that sets a value in the session to either keep a menu panel open or closed across any views a user looks at.
First, you need a controller action that is going to do the work you're interested in. I created a "SharedController" which handles application-wide things that don't belong to any particular view or other controller.

This controller action can set one of two values in the session, either: "admin_menu" (boolean) or "advanced_search" (boolean). Then certain views ask whether the session value for admin_menu or advanced_search is true, and if so they show the view.
You could use the same logic. Something like:

object= Object.find(params[:object_id])
object.own = params[:own]
object.save
end
To trigger this controller action with a link you need to have a route that accepts GET requests. edit is a logical choice.
resource :shared, :only => [:edit], :controller => 'shared'
Note: I think SharedController makes more sense than SharedsController, and edit_shared_path makes more sense than edit_shareds_path, so I had to specify :controller => 'shared' in my routes.rb.
Then you just need a link to a url with params. To add params onto a path you just add them to the path helper, like so:
edit_shared_path(:key => 'value')
You can retrieve these params in your controller via:
params[:key]
Make this a link like so:
link_to 'Set Own to True for This Object', edit_shared_path(:object_id=>object.id, :own=>'true')
NOTE: It's best to do this via AJAX, so be sure to set :remote=>true. If you don't use AJAX then you need to specify a redirect in your controller for what page should be loaded after this link is triggered.
In the case of my admin menu preference link, I need a link with two possible states. I generate these using a helper:

In a view I just call this using admin_toggle_button. You can do something similar if you like, but it's optional.

A further issue, you have resources :toys instead of resource :shared (which I used for this purpose). This means your link helper is already expecting a specific toy to edit, rather than handling a singular resource. See: http://guides.rubyonrails.org/routing.html#singular-resources
Your link would work if you changed it to be:
link_to 'Set Own', edit_toy_path(#toy, :owned=>'true'), :remote => true
... and set your edit action in your controller to the following:

Now, be aware, you really should only do this with AJAX links, and you should normally not do it with your "real" controller. The reason is, now this is the only action that can be processed by EDIT, so your normal toys#edit view would no longer work.
You can get around this by create a new action and a new route, for instance:

Then simply take the same method above and call it set_ownership instead of edit. IE:

The edit_toy_path method that your link_to method is calling is going to the edit action inside your controller. It's not going to the update method that I'm guessing you want.
Your link_to will need to change to something like:
<%= link_to 'Set Own', toy_path(:id=>toy.id, :owned=>'true'), :method => :put %>
But I question this particular approach. I don't think the variable will update correctly in the update action because it is not namespaced to the proper params[:toy] object that update_attributes is expecting. And in my quick and dirty tests I couldn't get it to namespace properly.
When I have a situation like the one that you are describing I usually setup another action, like toggle_ownership and I call that from my link_to with a :remote => true option. Then the controller toggles the attributes as desired.
Thus, my routes looks something like:
resources :toys do
member do
put :toggle_ownership
end
end
And my view looks like
<%= link_to 'Set Own', toggle_ownership_toy_path(toy.id), :method => :put %>
The controller sets the variable and renders back a toggle_ownership.js.erb file that updates the appropriate section of the page.

Rails controller not rendering correct view when form is force-submitted by Javascript

I'm using Rails with jQuery, and I'm working on a page for a simple site that prints each record to a table. The only editable field for each record is a checkbox. My goal is that every time a checkbox is changed, an ajax request updates that boolean attribute for the record (i.e., no submit button).
My view code:

I also have an RJS template to render back an update. The contents of this file is currently just for testing (I just wanted to see if it worked, this will not be the ultimate functionality on a successful save)...

When clicked, the ajax request is successfully sent, with the correct params, and the action on the controller can retrieve the record and update it just fine. The problem is that it doesn't send back the JS; it changes the page in the browser and renders the generated Javascript as plain text rather than executing it in-place.
Rails does some behind-the-scenes stuff to figure out if the incoming request is an ajax call, and I can't figure out why it's interpreting the incoming request as a regular web request as opposed to an ajax request.
I may be missing something extremely simple here, but I've kind-of burned myself out looking so I thought I'd ask for another pair of eyes. Thanks in advance for any info!
In your controller you need to specify the proper response. Since you didn't post the controller I'll just try to fill in the blanks.

Specifying the format tells the rails app to interpret the javascript instead of just sending it back as text.
The other option instead of using rjs is to do an inline rjs block like this:
render :update do |page|
page.replace_html 'user_list', :partial => 'user', :collection => #users
page.visual_effect :highlight, 'user_list'
end
Only use the inline rjs if you will be doing minimal changes to the interface that can be put into one or two lines. Anything more should be in it's own rjs file.
This question is related to this one, but the answer varies slightly. I had to create a new way to submit the form, since the default jQuery submit() method does not submit as a 'script' and certainly does not fire the code that Rails generates in the onsubmit="..." handler via the form_remote_tag helper.
The solution was to create a new function as the linked answer suggests, but the contents are slightly different:
