Questions on OAuth 2 server in ASP.NET Web Api - oauth-2.0

Currently, I think my understanding of OAuth and how it it is implemented in ASP.NET Web Api is flawed.
1) I keep seeing OAuth described as a server (i.e. the OAuth server). Is the OAuth implementation by a Microsoft a separate server with a different port or is it just referred to as a server even though it is self contained within the API project?
2) Is OWIN separate from OAuth or are the two linked such that they must be used together?
3) How does an OAuth v2 server keep track of tokens that have been revoked or have expired? Does the OAuth component have a database that keeps track of the tokens that it issues? If so, what type of database is it?
I have been reading the tutorials by Taiseer Joudeh from bitoftech.net but I think I am missing some of the basics.

Here are my responses:
You can implement the server as a stand alone authorization server or you can implement it together with the resource server. The Visual Studio template brings you both servers together, but you can separate them. Tutorials from Taiseer Joudeh will guide you very well, they did in my case.
OAuth 2.0 is an authorization framework, as said in its definition document. And OWIN stands for Open Web Interface for .NET. Both of them are different things, but Microsoft decided to do an implementation of OAuth 2.0 protocol using OWIN middlewares architecture. Then the easiest way to develop OAuth 2.0 servers in ASP.NET is using Microsoft.Owin.Security.* libraries implemented by Microsoft.
The OAuth 2.0 protocol does not talk about keeping track of expired or revoked tokens, you could implement if you want, but you only could do if the authorization and resource servers are both the same, and then you will need to access to database to check the token for each request, that it is not necessary. If the resource server is separated from the authorization server it has no direct access to the authorization server database. Normally you don't do that. The expiration check of the token is something that the Microsoft.Owin.Security.OAuth library makes for you. If a token received by the resource server has expired, the library responds with a 401 - Unauthorized response.
To make possible that the resource server can decrypt the token, you only need to set the same machine key in both servers' web.config file.
To avoid to have long lived access tokens you could set short access token timespan and implement refresh token. In this case, you could save refresh tokens in database and you can implement some method to revoke them.

OAuth2.0 without OIDC (Plain OAuth2.0)

As far as I understand, applications that we can login with our different accounts use OpenID Connect(A profile of OAuth2.0).
OAuth is for Authorization and OIDC is for authentication(It has ID Token-User Info Endpoint).
So, was it not possible to login to an application from another application account using OAuth before OIDC? (If possible, how?)
If plain OAuth can't be used for authentication, what is/was it used for?
I mean what does it do with 'authorization' exactly?
What does it get from the resource service with the access token?
I have always found the jargon around this unhelpful so I understand your confusion. Here is a plain English summary:
OAuth 2.0
Before OIDC apps used OAuth 2.0 to get tokens, and this involved optional user consent. The process of getting tokens was termed 'delegation'.
In practical terms though all real world OAuth 2.0 providers also included authentication in order for their system to be secure. How authentication was done is not defined in OAuth specifications.
OAuth is primarily about protecting data, where scopes and claims are the mechanisms. These links provide further info:

This just adds some clearer definition around how authentication messages before and after authentication should work:
A client simply includes an openid scope to use OpenID Connect
A client may force a login during a redirect via a prompt=login parameter
A client may request an authentication method via an acr_values parameter
The client receives an ID token (assertion) once authentication is complete, can digitally verify it if required, then use the information in it (eg a user name)
OIDC still does not define how the actual authentication works though.
Use them together
Pretty much all OAuth secured apps (and libraries) these days use both together, so that the authentication and delegation both use standards based solutions. It gives you the best application features and design patterns for doing the security well.

How Identity server 4 implements Json Web Tokens

I am very confused about the difference between oauth2 tokens and json web tokens.
I have searched about these technologies and the result is ;
Open Id is a protocol and It uses JSON Web tokens to ensure the requests are coming from a trusted user.
A Json web token contains a few user information ( claims ) as encrypted with a private key of sts.
Oauth2 is a framework and we can manage the login operations between our users , clients and resources and third-party applications.
Identity Framework 4 is an Open Id connect implementations .net MVC library. The library has written with oauth2 specs and it implements Open Id.
This is the point I didn't understand. The Oauth2 framework already has its token implementation.
Where is the place of JSON web tokens in this scenario?
For example, we have a simple web application and a server which implements identity server 4.
When a user requested a page from web application user will be redirected to our identity server to login operation.
After successful login Identity server adds a cookie to our response and these cookıe contains a token.
We wıll use that token when requests the other secure resources .
These steps are clear for me. Where is the Jason Web token in this schenio ?

Being an open-standard JWT has been largely adopted in security-related technology and protocols. It defines a compact and self-contained way for securely transmitting information between parties as a JSON object. This information can be verified and trusted because it is digitally signed
Let's explain some concepts of this definition further.
Compact: Because of their smaller size, JWTs can be sent through a URL, POST parameter, or inside an HTTP header. Additionally, the smaller size means transmission is fast.
Self-contained: The payload contains all the required information about the user, avoiding the need to query the database more than once.

The application-specific information/payload in these tokens is encoded using JWT. JWT is mostly transparent to application developers if good libraries are provided - as is the case for IdentityServer. You will find answers to your questions in the excellent documentation for IdentityServer. How to extract user claims is covered as well. The project provides numerous client examples that cover typical AuthX setups out there. It takes time and commitment to get through it.
JSON Web Token (JWT) (RFC 7519) itself is independent of OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect. You can use JWT wherever you like.
OAuth 2.0 is a specification as to how to request and issue access tokens. The specification does not say anything about how access tokens should be represented. Therefore, access tokens may be random strings or may be JWTs. Some authorization server implementations generate random strings and issue them as access tokens, and other implementations generate JWTs and issue them as access tokens. See “7. Access Token” in “Full-Scratch Implementor of OAuth and OpenID Connect Talks About Findings” for further discussion.
OpenID Connect is a specification as to how to request and issue ID tokens. The specification says an ID token is a kind of JWT. In addition, JWT is used in other places in the specification. Responses from UserInfo Endpoint are either plain JSON or JWT. Request Objects are JWT.
In normal cases, a server which supports OpenID Connect can issue both ID tokens (which are JWTs) and access tokens (which are either random strings or JWTs). This may be making you confused. Reading the following articles may be of help.

Managing client accounts in a project already using Identity

I am developing a WebAPI over my already existant MVC application, using the OAuth2 authorization system.
This API will allow my clients to request my users information. Currently, my users are stored in the Identity tables (ASPNetUsers). In my application, they are registering, logging in, etc... with the help of the Identity classes and methods.
The problem is here : I want to manage my API clients accounts, in an "Identity way", so I can authenticate them when they ask for Access Tokens. But I can't use the current users tables, as there is no common points between my clients and my users.
The perfect solution would be to have two Identity tables : one for my users, and one for my clients, but after my long-time searches, I figured it was not possible, or it would be a mess, at best.
I would not use ASP.NET Identity as a way to manage OAuth2 registered client applications. Even though some client applications (confidential) are indeed issued client credentials that's probably the only thing they share with a username/password user identity. It's a completely different thing and as such it should be managed and stored independently.
If you're thinking that this sounds like a lot of work, you're absolutely right. It isn't trivial to implement a custom username/password authentication that proves secure and implementing an OAuth2 authorization server is many times as complex.

If you're still evaluating all your options I would also consider the possibility of delegating all the authentication/authorization work onto a third-party, Auth0 comes to mind, but I'm biased because I work there.

oAuth implementation from the beginning or later

I'm starting a new system creating using .NET MVC - which is a relatively large scale business management platform. There's some indication that we'll open the platform to public once it is released and pass the market test.
We will be using ExtJs for the front-end which leads us to implement most data mining work return in JSON format - this makes me think whether I should learn the OAuth right now and try to embed the OAuth concept right from the beginning?
Basically the platform we want to create will initially fully implemented internally with a widget system; our boss is thinking to learn from Twitter to build just a core database and spread out all different features into other modules that can be integrated into the platform. To secure that in the beginning I proposed intranet implementation which is safer without much authentication required; however they think it will be once-for-all efforts if we can get a good implementation like OAuth into the platform as we start? (We are team of 6 and none of us know much about OAuth in fact!)
I don't know much about OAuth, so if it's worth to implement at the beginning of our system, I'll have to take a look and have my vote next week for OAuth in our meeting. This may effect how we gonna implement the whole web service thing, so may I ask anyone who's done large-scale web service /application before give some thoughts and advice for me?

OAuth 1 is nice if you want to use HTTP connections. If you can simply enforce HTTPS connections for all users, you might want to use OAuth 2, which is hardly more than a shared token between the client and server that's sent for each single request, plus a pre-defined way to get permission from the user via a web interface.
If you have to accept plain HTTP as well, OAuth 1 is really nice. It protects against replay attacks, packet injection or modification, uses a shared secret instead of shared token, etc. It is, however, a bit harder to implement than OAuth 2.
OAuth 2 is mostly about how to exchange username/password combinations for an access token, while OAuth 1 is mostly about how make semi-secure requests to a server over an unencrypted connection. If you don't need any of that, don't use OAuth. In many cases, Basic HTTP Authentication via HTTPS will do just fine.
OAuth is a standard for authentication and authorization. You can read about it in many places and learn; Generally the standard lets a client register in the authentication server, and then whenever this client attempts to access a protected resource, he is directed to the auth-server to get a token (first he gets a code, then he exchanges it with a token). But this is only generally, there are tons of details and options here...
Basically, one needs a good reason to use oAuth. If a simpler authentication mechanism is good for you - go for it.

MVC RESTful Service Authorization

I am in the process of re-writing some very outdated .NET 2.0 SOAP web services for my company. So I am rewriting them using MVC3 RESTful. This method would simplify the usage of our services for our client base (over 500 clients using our current SOAP services) who are on multiple platforms and languages.
I am looking for a BETTER method of authorization for the RESTful services, than what the previous developer used for our .NET 2.0 SOAP web services (he basically just had the client pass in a GUID as a parameter and matched it in code behind).
I have looked into oAuth and I want to use it, HOWEVER, I have been told, from my superiors, that this method is TOO complicated for the "level" of clients that connect to our services and want me to find another simpler way for them to connect but still have authorization. Most of our clients have BASIC to no knowledge of programming (either we helped them get their connection setup OR they hired some kid to do it for them). This is another reason that the superiors want a different method, because we can't have all 500+ (plus 5-10 new clients a day) asking for help on how to implement oAuth.
So, is there another way to secure the MVC3 services other than passing a preset GUID?
I have looked into using Windows Authentication on the services site, but is this really logical for 500+ clients to use?
Is there an easy and secure method of authorizing multiple users on multiple platforms to use the MVC3 RESTful services that a end-client can implement very easily?

If you don't want anything too complicated, have a look at Basic HTTP Authentication. If you use it over SSL then it should be safe enough and also easy enough to implement for your clients. The Twitter API actually used this up until a few months ago when they switched to OAuth.
You want to distinguish between authentication and authorization. What you are looking for is authentication and indeed as Caps suggests, the easiest way may be to use HTTP BASIC authentication along with SSL to make the password is not compromised.
You could look into other means of authentication e.g. DIGEST or more advanced using ADFS or SAML (ADFS could be compelling since you're in .NET). Have a look at OpenID Connect too - it is strongly supported by Google and has great support.
Once you are done with that, you may want to consider authorization - if you need it that is - to control what a given client can do on a given resource / item / record. For that you can use claims-based authorization as provided in the .NET framework or if you need finer-grained authorization, look into XACML.
OAuth wouldn't really solve your issue since OAuth is about delegation of authorization i.e. I let Twitter write to my Facebook account on my behalf.
