I want to send an app I wrote to a friend but I can't find answers on how to extract the .app file in XCode 7 or 8. Is there a way to do this?
Once the app is able to run. Choose the "Archive" option from the "Product" menu in xcode. When it's done, open the Organizer window and click the "Archive" tab. Click the build you want (should be the top one) and then click the "Export" button on the right side. You will probably want Ad Hoc deployment or Development Deployment. This will export an IPA file to your hard drive. You can mail it to your friend who can load it with iTunes.
It's easier if you have a dev account, you can register other test devices. Look here for details when you have no dev account;
Test iOS app on device without apple developer program or jailbreak
For Xcode 8.x
Click on Window tab -> Organizer
Right click the archive you need to get the .app file from (do not right click on the Name text as that will edit the text)
Show in Finder
Right click on the .xcarchive file that is selected -> Show Package Contents -> Products -> Applications
There's your file
You can hit command+i to make sure it's a .app file if the extension is hidden!

I created an app with Swift 5 in Xcode 10 and added the UDIDs of multiple iOS devices to my developer account (got the $99 one).
If I install my app on the device through Xcode, I can start the app, it's got an icon and everything works fine.
I also exported the app as .ipa file:
Pick the "Generic iOS Device" in Xcode (top left)
Create archive (Product - Archive)
Open the list of archives (Window - Organizer)
Highlight on the archive that was just created and click on "Distribute app"
iOS App Store - Next
Export - Next
Both options checked (include bitcode, upload app's symboles) - Next
Automatically manage signing - Next
Enter the password for the Mac Account twice
Click "Export" on the "Review myapp.ipa content" screen
Pick folder to "Export As" and click "Export"
Connect iOS device to Mac/PC -> iTunes opens
Click on the "iPhone" icon next to the dropdown menu (music, movies,...) to see the files on the device
Drag exported .ipa from finder/explorer to the left (as shown here) -> iTunes installs app on iOS device.
The app does show up on the home screen but it's only got a darker version of the default white/grey icon (it uses the actual icon if I install if through Xcode) and if I press on it, the icon "wiggles" once but the app doesn't open. There's no error message or any indication what's wrong.
The app's not in the "currently running apps" list (pressing the home button twice).
I changed the "Build Configuration" (Edit Scheme - Run - Info) from "Debug" to "Release" (suggested here) but that didn't help either.
Did I miss anything while exporting? How do I make the app start?
You can export it for for App Store submission via automation tools - which is often done in a company environment (multiple developers, multiple apps, CI / CD [Continuous integration / Continuous Delivery], etc).
If you're not doing that, you submit the app via Xcode.
Probably worth your time to read through https://help.apple.com/app-store-connect/
The problem was caused by picking "iOS App Store". Instead, as #DonMag pointed out, you have to use "Ad Hoc" if you want to export an .ipa file that you can drag into iTunes and install on your device - as long as you added the device's UDID to your developer account, of course.
Step 1-3 and 5-7 are the same (as in my question) but for step 4 do this instead:
Highlight the archive that was just created and click on "Distribute app"
Ad Hoc - Next
Next (Distribution options)
Next (Re-sign "myApp")
Enter your password twice
Export (Review myApp.ipa content)
Pick folder - Export
When i go to window > organizer > Archives and select an archive, instead of "distribute app" i get "distribute content", see capture
Then when i click on distribute content since its the only option available instead of getting export options to app store i get only to options that ask me to export/save an archive to my computer, see capture.
My XCode version is 10.1, also i have done all configurations from setting my apple id, adding keys / certificates, etc.
I am stuck at this stage, Any help will be appreciated.
You need to follow below steps:
1) Make sure that you are a select device as Generic iOS Device on top Left corner
2) Click on Product on top menu
3) Click on Archive
4) After successfully Archive, You will get below window and click on Upload to App Store
5) Select your proper apple account and provisional profile and click on next.
You are done.
You are not archiving the app target. You’re archiving the wrong target.

In my project I can not figure out how to create an IPA file. Can anyone explain, step by step, how to make IPA file in Xcode 6?
you could follow below:
1.Select your swiftDemo in your xcode(left-hand side as shown) Then select Product option, in which you could select Archive option.
Then a new window would open up as follow and in that window select the export option
3.Then a pop up will come as below and select first option as you looking for apple store.
So now follow as it say.
UPDATE
-> Select the Save to ad-hoc deployment as below
-> then if you have not sign with your apple developer id then below screen would pop-up
-> Now select add in this and provide your apple id and password in new window as shown.
-> Rest follow as guided by xcode and finally you will have your IPA file.
-> Go with your testflight.
Don't forget to provide your provisioning profile and certificates in code-signing your build setting in xcode.
If you want to upload .ipa file to itunesconnect without integrating developer account in Xcode and you want to use application loader. then you can generate .ipa with iTunes .
Step 1 :- Select device inplace of simulator.
Step 2 :- Go to Product -> select Archive
Step 3 :- After complited process right click to your Archive -> and select show in Finder
Step 4 :- when you click on show in finder you will redirect to Archive folder, looks like this
Step 5 :- Right click on .xarchive file -> select Show Package Contents option.
Step 6 :- Go to Product Folder -> Application Folder -> You will find yourprojectname.app
Step 7 :- Now to convert .app to .ipa just drag and drop into itunes . check below image ,
Step 8 :- Now put this .ipa file in safe place and use when upload with application loader .
Note :- if you want to know how to upload app with application loader then check this ,
Upload app with application Loader
EDIT :-
WARNING :- Don't make .ipa with changing extension from .aap to .zip and .zip to .ipa.
I have seen in many answer that , they have suggest compress .app file and then change the extension from .zip to .ipa . It is not working now . By this method you will get Error like ,
IPA is invalid, it does not include a payload directory.
1. Make your application with X-Code
.
2. Run your application in simulator
.
3. Open finder, Goto -> /Library/Developer/XCode/DerivedData/<Your App Name-blahblahblah>/Build/Products/Debug-iphonesimulator
.
4. Open iTunes -> Goto Apps
.
5. Drag YourApplication.app to iTunes
.
6. Drag back your app from iTunes to finder to get YourApplication.ipa
In XCode Version 9.0 (9A235):
Archive your Project
Click Window->Organizer, select your archived project. Click Export
Select Development (option)
Click Next and Sign the App and export
This will export publish content to a location, where you can find the .ipa file.
I know this is simple, but I've read through all the questions and there doesn't seem to be a simple answer to this.
I've created an appID. I've created a mobileprovision file, downloaded it and double clicked it and that all seems fine.
How do I get this profile though to show up in XCode? and where would it show up?
using latest version of iOS and XCode.
It's appearing, evidently it just takes time to appear.
Open Organizer in Xcode (Window -> Organizer), go to the Devices tab and select Provisioning Profiles in the left drawer. Then use the Refresh button on the bottom right.
Update 2018
From #mikeLspohn comment: Go to Window > Devices then right-click on your device and select Show Provisioning Profiles ... from there you can click on +/- to add or remove profiles -
Two steps:
First drag it onto iTunes. Dropping a .mobileProvision onto iTunes will install it in ~/Library/MobileDevice/Provisioning Profiles where it is supposed to go.
Second double-click on .mobileProvision to add it to the Xcode store.
It doesn't hurt to relaunch Xcode after that.
You can always just drag the file onto the Xcode dock icon. This will add it to Xcode's store. When your target has the correct bundle ID and you have the private key, you should be able to select the appropriate profile and signing identity in the Code Signing build settings.
In XCode 12.2, click Window in the menu > Devices and Simulators
Right click you device, and select Show Provisioning Profiles...
Then click "+" to add your .mobileprovision files.
UPDATE:
The method above added mobileprovision files and shows in Xcode UI. However, it does not add to
/Users/myusername/Library/MobileDevice/Provisioning Profiles
And when I build from Xcode, it still says the mobileprovision files are missing.
And the end, I found I only need to double click each mobileprovision file to add them under the folder of
/Users/myusername/Library/MobileDevice/Provisioning Profiles
And my Xcode has no issue building this time.
Xcode 12.3
Select your project in the navigator
Select your target
Select Signing and Capabilities
Uncheck the Automatically Manage Signing Box
You will then see a dropdown to select a provisioning profile. You can 'download' directly from Apple, assuming you've set up the profile on the developer site. Or you can 'Import' a file you've downloaded separately.
Now, check the Automatic Signing box again.
I am not sure if this is necessary, but as Hongbo Miao has pointed out, you can download the file and double click it to 'add it to the library'.
Go to http://developer.apple.com in Safari on your device and navigate to the SDK/downloads section. From that page, download the .mobileconfig file and when prompted, Install. This will allow you to install beta builds when you go to Settings -> General -> Software Update.
