Build my own version of graph.microsoft.io - microsoft-graph-api

https://graph.microsoft.io/en-us/ seems to be built on top of the Azure AD graph - https://graph.windows.net/
I haven't found a lot of how graph.microsoft.io was built, but it seems like it is a superset of the original Azure AD API, together with the stuff to access data from Office 365 through the graph.
What stands out to me is that either they would have passed through queries from graph.microsoft.io to graph.windows.net or they would have rebuilt it all from scratch. So, I'm trying to understand how to build my own such graph. I will use Azure AD, which will enable my authentication and authorization. It will give me a graph of the users in my organization. But for custom applications that also use Azure AD for login, I would like them to be available via the graph, like how the Office 365 apps are available via the graph.microsoft.io site.
So far, to implement something similar, it seems like I can use the core Azure AD graph for a specific set of user data, and for apps that use the Azure AD instance that I provide, I can require them to implement an Odata endpoint which describes how their own data can be accessed.
Is this a good approach?

It's certainly pretty much exactly what we do, so who am I to argue. However, rather than going to Azure AD directly for the graph of users in your org, I'd encourage you to go to MS Graph for that data, as we'll be looking to add richness and functionality there rather than in the underlying AAD Graph as time marches on, and also it will enable you to link across easily to other Office apps of course.
Over time, we'd like you not to have to do this, but rather to bring your own apps' data into the Microsoft Graph in some fashion, but we are a ways away from having that facility available.

Feasibility of sidestepping Azure AD B2C custom policies in favour of Microsoft Graph API

I'm mid-way through a task to migrate a legacy .NET MVC app to use Single Sign On (SSO) to make integration with a to-be-developed mobile app possible. I'm planning on using Azure AD B2C to facilitate this and based on my researched, I need to use custom policies to achieve the required functionality.
Work on this migration is proceeding very slowly. I'm finding the custom policy XML very clunky to work with. It's going to take quite some time to achieve parity with the existing system given the current velocity. I'm wondering whether it would be wise to sidestep a lot of the migration headaches by using the Microsoft Graph API in place of custom policies.
Take registration for example. It appears common to redirect the user to a SignUp.xml custom policy (or the integrated SignUpOrSignIn.xml) to handle adding the user record in the AD B2C data store. Part of this policy would involve calling a REST API to create a corresponding record for this user in the app's database (stores email settings and such). Instead of using these custom policies, my plan would be to instead take the existing registration process and simply add a step which creates the user record on the B2C side using the Microsoft Graph API.
It appears like most things I need may be achieved using the Microsoft Graph API. Things I'd need that I can see are not available are:
logging in to a user account and;
sending verification emails
Are there any other common authentication-related tasks I'm likely to need that couldn't be achieved using the Graph API?
As far as downsides, the fact I'd be handling user passwords (even if it was just to create the user and nothing else) is an obvious concern, but perhaps acceptable. The main thing I'm after is a simple SSO solution that generates secure access tokens (incl. handling reset tokens, etc). I hope then, that this could be a feasible option.
You will miss out on password reset, profile edit, SSO and token expiration etc.
A better way may be to use the base custom policies and achieve a lot of what you need by having the policy call REST API's.

SharePoint REST API vs. Microsoft Graph API; which is recommended approach?

SharePoint Online can be accessed either using SharePoint's own native REST API, or, using Microsoft Graph API. I have briefly explored both of the APIs and see differences in terms of the capability, for example, SharePoint API has function type method calls (GetByTitle()), whereas the Graph API seems to support identity based access, or, 'site path'. My opinion is that SharePoint makes it easy to access resources through the use of 'function' in URL, however, i am not sure if it is RESTful. It would be helpful to have your views on this aspect.
Given the two options (SharePoint & Graph) which is the recommended way forward, considering below criteria's:
Future proof - in terms of enhancement, support from Microsoft
Performance
Functionality coverage - considering current version of Graph API
Also, I couldn't find any Microsoft recommendations on this, if there is one kindly share the link.

I recommend Microsoft Graph API. I know it is a proxy to actual Sharepoint, OneNote, Planner, and etc API, but the way they are improving graph api day by day makes me think it is going to last for a good time. Let's say if you are writing an app that wants to connect with many Microsoft apps endpoints, having one class that handles all the graph api requests is enough instead of looking for specific apps endpoints.
Performance: I have been using Microsoft graph api for most of SharePoint related work and it works good and fast. I use Graph explorer to check out the graph if it actually works before implementing it in the app.
Functionality Coverage: Obviously graph is a proxy of a real api so it won't cover all the processes you need to do in SharePoint. For example, I had to create a Sharepoint Group which I could not find a way via graph api. But I assume as more people vote on those requests, the graph api is bringing those new possible proxy endpoints too. But again if your app is only working with Sharepoint then I believe I would stick to SharePoint API. In favor of Graph API, they also have something called delta query and subscription notification to see changes in the files and documents.
I was under the impression that the Graph API was meant to centralize things, make one endpoint to connect to all Sharepoint services via API. With that in mind, I wonder if we shouldn't be asking which is the better option but rather we should be asking when the so-called native option will be end of lifed. Graph is more future proof in the sense that this is the direction MS is taking. I can't speak to performance personally. As far as functionality, I can't imagine that Graph is functionally worse than previous iterations of SP. It might be functionally different. But it should expand API functionality.

Using Azure AD to secure a aspnet webapi

I'm writing an application that will be the backend for a react website. The website is to be used by our customers, but we will fully control the permissions of the user. We have decided to use Azure AD to secure requests, but will also be exposing the API for end users to use directly if desired.
My understanding is in Azure AD I will have to create an application that will allow web based implicit authentication (for the react site), as well as a native application that will allow a dameon based application to authenticate to the API.
This I believe means I will have two audience ids in my application.
I'm trying to get claims to include groups, and I can see if I edit the meta data of both applicaitons in azure AD to include "groupMembershipClaims": "SecurityGroup" I can get claims with the group IDs in, but no names.
I think I can also use appRoles to set roles the application uses, but I've yet to get that to come through as claims in the JWT, but I'm assuming it can be done, however I'd need to setup the roles on each applicaiton, then add the user twice which isn't really ideal. I also think that because my app is multi-teanated that external users could use this to set their own permissions, which isn't what I want to do.
Sorry I'm just totally lost and the documentation is beyond confusing given how frequently this appears to change!

Daemon apps usually have to be registered as Web/API, i.e. publicClient: false.
That's because a native app can't have client secrets.

You will have two applications, at least. If you want, the back-end and React front can share one app (with implicit flow enabled). And the daemon will need another registration.

Yes, ids are included only. If you need names, you go to Graph API to get them. But why do you need them? For display? Otherwise, you need to be using the ids to setup permissions. Names always change and then your code breaks.

Why would you need to setup the roles in multiple apps though? Wouldn't they only apply in the web app?
If the native app is a daemon, there is no user.
Overall, I can see your problem. You have people from other orgs, who want access to your app, but you want to control their access rights.
Honestly, the best way might be to make the app single-tenant in some tenant which you control. Then invite the external users there as guests (there's an API for this). Then you can assign them roles by using groups or appRoles.
If I misunderstood something, drop a comment and I'll fix up my answer.

Why most of Microsoft Graph features are restricted to user access only

Service or daemon authentication to the Microsoft Graph grants access to a limited number of functions.
For example, to be able to work with Planner and tasks, you have to be logged in as a user. In other case, we can't access most of user details, we can't access user's files and so on.
Why service or daemon must have more permissions then now? In our case, service should automatically create Planner tasks and Calendar events for specific users or groups according to automatically registered events. Sometimes it should also create or add or read files in OneDrive of this user. Also automatically, of course. Due to Microsoft Graph restrictions, it is easier to use additional 3rd-party service to track tasks, or even write our own. The same situation with files.
Microsoft Graph looks like a powerful API, but due to its access restrictions it becames unusable when you need to made something automatically, without any user actions.
What is the reason for most of these restrictions?

Decoupled Web APIs on Azure (Architecture Advise)

I'm working for a non-profit that is trying to create a collection of services that will allow them to do a few things:
Create/Manage Users
Create/Manger Competitions
Create/Manager Events(a Competition is made up of many Events)
Logistics
Etc.
Here are some of the requirements:
Host on Azure
Accounts are created using the user's own email address (can be any domain)
Each service must be independent of each other
System should be accessible from anywhere(browser, mobile app, etc.)
Once a user logs in, access to other systems should be available(if needed or depending on permissions)
-services can talk to each other(we've successfully done a POC on this using Azure Active Directory)
I've spent some time researching the possible ways to tackle this, including looking at articles like this:

It sounds like JWT is the way to go, but I want to make sure that this architecture approach lends itself to flexibility down the road. I'm willing to learn/user any technology as long as it plays along .Net, Web Api, and MVC.
My initial idea was to set each "system" as a Web API, which is pretty straightforward. My concern is authentication/authorization. The million dollar question then becomes:
How can I authenticate a user on a browser/mobile/desktop app and then make use of the other services(APIs), where each service can verify if the user is authenticated independent of other services.
For example, lets say I am using the web app(browser) and register as a user(using User service) in order to register for a competition(Competition service). what kind of technologies/architecture would need to be used for both services to use the same authentication mechanism?

Azure Active Directory can help you with your need.
About the security/Auth mechanism, simply put, it is like you get a token from Azure Active Directory to be able to use it to do authentication for a certain Audiences/Tenants.
And in your architecture, when you acquire a Token, you can specify if you are going to use it against a certain audience or it will work for a list of audiences or all audiences in a specific tenant or in a multi tenant scenario.
