Rubymine: overcommit gem is not installed - ruby-on-rails

I am working on a Ruby on Rails project that uses overcommit to perform various checks during the commit process. Everything works fine on the command line, I can commit, change branches, push and pull with no problem. However, when I try to perform the same actions in Rubymine, I get the following error:
This repository contains hooks installed by Overcommit, but the `overcommit` gem is not installed.
Install it with `gem install overcommit`.
Despite the fact that the overcommit gem is installed in the RVM gemset for this project.
My setup is as follow:
Rubymine 8.0.3
RVM 1.26.11
Ruby 2.2.3
overcommit 0.29.1

I ran into the same issue today. The problem is that Rubymine does not run in the same environment as your terminal and does not know anything about RVM, nor gems installed under RVM.
You need to install Overcommit into the system ruby environment which is most easily done by installing it under root:
$ sudo -i
$ gem install overcommit
After you do that, you should be able to make git commits in Rubymine again. However, note that Rubymine won't display Overcommit's warnings in the VCS console, nor anywhere else as the Rubymine's git plugin simply "eats" everything from STDOUT / STDERR unless Overcommit makes the git commit fail.

Why is RubyMine asking to install gems that were already installed by bundler?

For some reason, RubyMine is constantly complaining about some gems not being installed. However, when I click "Install missing gems" RubyMine is unable to install them:
Error message:
Furthermore, the gems seem to be installed already! If bundler install command is run, the results indicate these gems are already installed.
The thing is that probably RubyMine uses different version of ruby that one you have in your PATH. Bundler installs only for your version.
You can check what ruby you are using by simply typing which ruby or ruby -v.
Also the part about "Don't install bundler as a root." is troubling...

How do I upgrade the Ruby version of my project?

I recently started learning Rails using Ruby 1.9.3p385, and I'm trying to develop a small project with it.
I'm using Linux so I installed Ruby using RVM.
I developed a few pages, following some tutorials. I would like to upgrade my project to use Ruby 2.0.0. What do I have to do?
I installed Ruby 2.0.0 with RVM:
rvm install 2.0.0
Everything seems OK, so I tried to use it:
rvm use 2.0.0-p247
But when I try to run my Rails server using rails server, I get the following message:
bash: rails : command not found
I've read the RVM documentation about upgrading Ruby but I don't really understand what it does; I'm afraid of breaking everything.
Does it will upgrade my project in a way it will use Ruby 2.0.0 or what should I do?
Next, I will want to upgrade also to Rails v4.
Your gemset which comes with new Ruby version is empty. Try this:
gem install bundler # this will install bundler
bundle # this will use bundler to install required gems
rails server
Did you run rvm use 2.0.0-p247 or did you use rvm use 2.0.0-p247 --default? The later will set Ruby v.2.0 as the default for your system. Failure to do that will revert your Ruby to whatever RVM's default is the next time you log into your system or open a new terminal window.
When RVM installs a new version of Ruby, it installs only the default gems. It CAN upgrade a Ruby to another version, and optionally install the existing gems as it does so, but that's not what you asked it to do: rvm install 2.0.0 only installs Ruby. At that point you have to install the other gems you need, which would include Rails.
My general practice when installing various versions of Ruby and the gems I like is to use two command-line pipes to dump my existing gems, then (re)install them. First I switch to an existing Ruby whose gems I want to duplicate, then run:
gem list | cut -f1 -d' ' > ~/gem_list
Then I switch to the newly installed one, and run this:
xargs gem install < ~/gem_list
This does a completely clean install of the gems, outside of RVM's commands.
Why? Habit. Paranoia based on some "experiences" I had in the past with RVM.
Once that's all done and I have brand-spanking-new Ruby and gems, I'll proceed with running bundler or other housekeeping chores.
when you install a new ruby version, you have to reinstall all the gems for that version. start of by installing bundler first. Then run bundle in your rails root directory. When you encounter no errors, you're good to start the rails server. Good luck!
run bundle install on the application root, you need to reinstall all your dependencies for the new version of Ruby.

Rails 3.2 not using bundled gems, Capistrano needs sudo gem install and rbenv not finding rails

I have 2 Rails 3.2.11 apps running on an Ubuntu 12.04 server with Nginx, Unicorn and Postgresql. Deployment is by git and capistrano.
After I installed the second app I found that Capistrano would fail during cap deploy because it "could not find a gem source" and I needed to install each missing gem using sudo. After this, cap deploy worked fine and so did the apps. Running bundle install from the current dir in either app reported using all the correct gems.
I am perplexed that Capistrano needs to find the gems before updating my app as my past experience (I think) was that I could run bundle install from the current dir to install any new or updated gems after cap deploy.
Today, I decided to update my Ruby version using rbenv on my dev laptop. I needed to run git pull from .rbenv/plugins/ruby-build and then rbenv rehash then I could install the new Ruby version. All good, ruby-v reports the new version 19.3-p374.
Now, when I run rails server (rails s) from my app dev dir I get rbenv: rails: command not found. The rails' command exists in these Ruby versions: 1.9.3-p327. rbenv version reports
1.9.3-p374. Rbenv which rails and bundle install both report "command not found: with rbenv error "Therails' command exists in these Ruby versions: 1.9.3-p327".
So, two issues which I believe are related:-
How to make each app on my server independently run its own gems using bundle install? I don't want to freeze the gems and am quite happy to keep both apps up to date simultaneously. Should I just keep installing the required gems using sudo?
How to fix the rbenv issue of not finding rails in the new version?
I needed to reinstall all gems again. Gem install bundler and then bundle update from each application directory.

Bundler and Rails looking at different gems?

This has driven me crazy. I changed laptop and tried getting my Rails environment working again. Mac OS X has its own ruby, but I used brew and installed new. I installed rails 3.0.5, ran:
bundle install
Then:
rails s
I got this error:
Could not find aws-s3-0.6.2 in any of the sources
Run `bundle install` to install missing gems.
After bashing my head against a wall for a couple hours, I tried just manually installing the gems and it worked! So, apparently, rails and bundler are looking at different places for my gems. Both are from my brew install.
How can I figure out what each is looking at so I can use "bundle install" again?
Rails and Bundle are looking at the gems providing they are in the bundle.
Use the
bundle show
command to see the gems Rails is having access to via bundler.
Also you can examine the Gemfile.lock file.
The gemfile sources mainly from rubygems.org as supposed to rubyforge (which came up when i searched that gem on google). I think the gem command will check both. You can specify additional sources, as mentioned in the readme: http://gembundler.com/man/gemfile.5.html
Are you using pow? I've been having this issue with Pow starting up with one version of ruby, but not the version that I have RVM currently set to.
I have not tried it yet, but this issue on Github mentions the problem and refers people to the Pow trouble shooting here. I've pasted the contents below:
RVM
Incorrect ruby or gemset is being used
Create a .rvmrc at your project root. See rvmrc docs.
System-wide RVM install
If you have a system-wide RVM install and are getting the error LoadError: no such file to load -- bundler/setup, run rvm info to find out where rvm is installed on your machine, then do this:
echo "export POW_RVM_PATH=/usr/local/rvm/scripts/rvm" >> ~/.powconfig
Where /usr/local/rvm/ is the location of your rvm installation.
Then restart POW by killing it in the Activity Monitor or in Terminal.

Installing Heroku on Ubuntu Lucid Lynx is broken

I am trying to get a Ruby on Rails app hosted free somewhere, and Heroku is looking like my last resource. It is supposed to work on Linux, and the gem installs with no errors, but whenever I run any Heroku command it spits out several errors, all connected, and talking about a failed 'require.' I looked it up in the code, and it says:
require 'readline'
That is it.
I have tried to install every variation of libreadline that I can find and think of, but none of it makes any difference. Any ideas here?
It could be that your system installed version of Ruby is not build with readline support. If so then you could reinstall it from source and select the correct configure parameters for readline support. That's not only annoying but means you'd have to manually maintain updates yourself.
Better still would be to abandon your system Ruby altogether in favor of one installed with RVM
Install RVM as described here
Install libreadline-dev
$ sudo apt-get install libreadline-dev
Install a version of ruby (e.g. 1.8.7)
$ rvm install 1.8.7
$ rvm --default 1.8.7
Install your rails and Heroku gems under the RVM ruby
$ gem install rails heroku taps ... # Note no sudo!
See if your problem persists
If so, then do this:
$ cd ~/.rvm/src/ruby-1.8.7-p299/ext/readline
$ ruby extconf.rb
$ make
$ make install
Ubuntu's ruby-full package depends on libreadline-ruby and should pull in everything both you and it needs. If you have tried installing ruby by installing a bunch of separate packages you might be missing something. If that's the case go back and install ruby-full.
I have a script I use to rebuild my Rails Environment whenever I install the latest Ubuntu. It installs everything you need for Heroku (which is where I host my apps) as well. You might want to take a peek at it and see if there is anything there that you are missing.
If ruby-full doesn't sort you out, I would second Bjg's advice and ditch the system ruby for RVM.
I got it to work, but it was rather a hack. I hunted down the readline.so file from where it was installed (in some strange spot) and did a hard link to where ruby was looking for readline, and it worked. Not optimum, and I will definitely try what you guys recommend next time. Thanks!
