How to upgrade ASP Identity Membership from 2.2 to 3.0 - asp.net-mvc

I am using ASP Identity 2.2.x (2.x) targeting .NET 4.6/system.web.mvc 5.2.3 which in reality seems like its MVC 5 (another confusing ball game for me).
Now that I saw ASP Identity 3.0 released here and here, I was looking to upgrade, but don't know if its simple replace or more complicated -
Can I upgrade to 3.0 inside the current 4.6 target run time, or do I need DNX?
Is 4.6 considered ASP MVC 5 (yes, I am using System.Web.Mvc 5.2.3), so this should be compatible based on the the two links above, right?
What does Identity 3.x buy me thats not in 2.x
What does it involve, has anyone cared to venture :)

System.Web.WebPages.Razor 3.0.0 missing

I would like to add reference to my ASP.NET MVC4 project, but in Add reference dialog (Assemblies->Extensions), there are only version 1.0 and 2.0 of System.Web.WebPages.Razor.dll
I have installed Visual Studio Professional 2013 and ASP.NET MVC4 from Web Platform Installer. What I am missing.
The web application does not work without this reference and complains that it cannot find System.Web.WebPages.Razor.dll 3.0
Razor 3.0 is only compatible with MVC 5. In your question, you stated that you are using MVC 4, which is only compatible with Razor 2.0.
So, the real question is, why are you trying to add Razor 3.0 to MVC 4? Either stick with Razor 2.0, or upgrade your project to MVC 5.
If you have a project dependency that was designed for MVC 5 (and Razor 3.0), you might be getting this error. The same advice goes for the dependency - either change it to use Razor 2.0 and MVC 4 (assuming you can make changes to it), or upgrade the project that requires the dependency to MVC 5.

Can I compile and run a MVC1.0 application under .NET 4.0?

We have an MVC1.0 application that is compiled against and runs with .Net Framework 3.5.
The application was scanned for security and the scanning organisation reported
Microsoft ASP.NET ValidateRequest Filters Bypass Cross-Site Scripting
Vulnerability
https://community.qualys.com/docs/DOC-3495
What versions of Microsoft ASP.NET are vulnerable? Microsoft has
confirmed that ASP.NET versions 1 and 2 are both vulnerable.
Additionally, Qualys has confirmed that ASP.NET version 3 is also
vulnerable, as it includes the vulnerable component from version 2 by
default. We have tested this in our Labs and confirmed the exploit
works on a fully patched version 3.
We are already upgrading our application to MVC3, but that takes some more time to finish.
Is there any chance I can run and compile a MVC1.0 application against .NET 4.0?
This may arise compatibility issues, Even though there are very few dependencies over the .net framework.
You can refer the following posts.
Is ASP.NET MVC 1 forwards compatible with ASP.NET MVC 2?
ASP.Net MVC 1.0 in Visual Studio 2010
From what I understand, anything that runs on .NET 3.5 should function and complile just fine in .NET 4.0, with perhaps some warnings about depreciated functions, but they will still work.
In case you are still curious/not comfortable, there are some tools available to help verify dependencies and other items such at NDepend
Best recommendation... try it! I can't think of any other reason than what Tommy mentioned about deprecated functions. Also, you can update most of your references with
Update-Package
without arguments.
If it compiles fine, do a quick test run over the views. If nothing seems broken, then it probably isn't.

Upgrading ASP.NET MVC1 project to ASP.NET MVC4

I need to upgrade an application that runs on ASP.NET MVC 1 to ASP.NET MVC 4.
The new application still uses the Webforms Viewengine. It uses StructureMap for Dependency Injection.
If possible I would like to upgrade manually.
For upgrading from ASP.NET 1 to ASP.NET 2 I found the white paper
http://www.asp.net/whitepapers/aspnet-mvc2-upgrade-notes
The steps described in the document seem to be of little risk:
Fiddle with web.csproj
Replace Version=1.0.0.0 in web.config by Version=2.0.0.0
Reference System.Web.Mvc (v2.0.0.0) in the project
chnange bindingRedirect in web.config
update css and js files
What about upgrading to MVC 4: Will there be different steps involved?
You would follow a similar set of steps to upgrade to MVC 4. Microsoft has a whitepaper that outlines the steps required to manually upgrade a project from MVC 3 to MVC 4.
I have upgraded from 3 to 4 following these steps and it was a pretty simple and smooth process. Going from 1 to 4 is a bigger jump of course, so to minimize headaches you might want to individually upgrade 1->2, 2->3, 3->4: if you run into any breaking code changes it will be easier to identify how to resolve them. But fundamentally, all you're really doing is changing project GUIDs and referencing newer DLLs and such. It's not brain surgery.
To answer Ashok's question, MVC 4 is certainly deployable if you wish to use it today - my public blog is running it (on my own server). Use preview software at your own risk, of course.
My understanding is that MVC 4 is still in developer preview so a lot of features may and likely will change when the RC version is release. Since it is in dev preview is it even deployable as a live site?

Wrapping up Asp.net Framework 4.0 in 3.5

I am working on an application in VS 2010 and using Asp.net framework 4.0 which i just migrated from Framework 3.5. The reason i had to migrate it to 4.0 is, i have a third party toolkit dll which is built in Framework 4.0, so in order to include it i had to change target framework of this project to 4.0. As, this project is being referred from other projects ans so on.., i end up converting whole application to framework 4.0. Every thing worked okay but as the application is using spring.net also, after successfully building the application, i found broken controls on almost all the pages. i am getting java script errors (about undefined control)for usercontrol PopupDatePickerControl we are using in the application. i downloaded and included latest version of Spring.net. i have no idea what is causing this problem. Please help if any one has experience working with this combination of framework 4.0 and spring.net? OR there is any way out to wrap up Framework 4.0 into 3.5. so i don't have to do this Migration.
Thanks!
Sounds like a shot in the dark on so many levels. It's probably not the combination of 4.0 and Spring.NET, unless you aren't referencing the correct Spring.NET dlls. Can you post parts of your IoC configuration and a rough outline of your app's architecture?
Also, what is the other third party toolkit you mentioned?

What's the deal with ASP.NET 3.5 Extensions Preview 2?

I'm trying to get the MVCToolkit working with an ASP.NET MVC Beta application and ran into an unresolved reference to System.Web.Extensions version 3.6 (ASP.NET MVC Beta comes with System.Web.Extensions version 3.5). All my google searches seem to point to a broken download link on Microsoft's site: ASP.NET 3.5 Extensions Preview 2
The toolkit is now in Microsoft.Web.Mvc, which is also called "Futures". If that's not confusing enough :) it's not revved with the platform.
Anyway - the toolkit is no longer the "toolkit" - it's part of the platform (for the most part) and if you have beta, you already have it. Just make sure that Micrsoft.Web.Mvc dll is in your bin.
I believe System.Web.Extensions v3.6 is part of .Net 3.5 Service Pack 1?
