How to raise an exception in an RSpec test - ruby-on-rails

I'm stuck on a test scenario.
I have a controller method:

Now I want to test the ActiveRecord::StaleObjectError exception. I want to stub it, but I didn't find any solution how to do this.
So my question is, how to raise the ActiveRecord::StaleObjectError in an RSpec test?

Like this, for example
expect(object).to receive(:save).and_raise(ActiveRecord::StaleObjectError)

I would do something like this:

raise_error spec not returning true in Rspec 3.4

the raise_bad_request test returns the error instead of true. Anyone have thoughts on how to write this better to it passes?
I'm using Rails 4 and Rspec 3.4.
If I recall correctly, I believe you need to pass the expectation a block when your raising, like this:
describe '#raise_bad_request!' do
it 'raises it' do
binding.pry
expect{klass.new.raise_bad_request!('TESTME')}.to raise_error
end
end

For the raise_error matcher you need to pass a block to expect instead of a value:
expect { klass.raise_bad_request!('TESTME') }.to raise_error
That should do it!

Getting a delegation error in the API controller test module in Rspec

I am writing a controller spec to verify this private method and I get the error Module::DelegationError: ActionController::RackDelegation but I am lost as how to fix this. The best example I have found has been http://owowthathurts.blogspot.com/2013/08/rspec-response-delegation-error-fix.html.
How can I get the unverified spec to pass? I want to make sure the 401 is returned.

How do I test the rescue block of a method with rspec mocks 3.3

Help me make this test pass:

Background:
My original question went something like this:
I have a method, like the following:

And I want to test that resource.errors.add(:base, e.errors) is, in fact, adding an error to the resource. More generally, I want to test the rescue block in a method.
So I'd like to write code like,

Of course, this raises an error because I am re-raising in the rescue block.
I've seen a few answers that use the old something.stub(:method_name).and_raise(SomeException), but rspec complains that this syntax is deprecated. I would like to use Rspec Mocks 3.3 and the allow syntax, but I'm having a hard time.
allow(something).to receive(:method_name).and_raise(SomeException)
would be the new allow syntax. Check out the docs for reference.
I was misunderstanding what the allow syntax is actually for. So to make my example specs pass, I needed to do this:

This thing that I'm stubing is not the method, or the subject, but the object that might raise. In this case I stub $stdout so that puts will raise.

First test is for what data controller provides to the view. Looking on the controller you have you should check for assigns(:cartdlist) I think. And use match_array rather than eq.
Second test doesn't render anything as it doesn't go anywhere (your get is just for the first it block). So try this:

It's probably not the problem in your case as you got different error but to allow expect syntax your spec_helper.rb file should contain:

Generating RSpec Examples via Functions

I'm trying to add a function to allow for quick testing of redirects for unauthenticated users. Here's what I have so far:

This doesn't work, however, since the scope and context of the primary describe block is not available to the block passed to unauthenticated_redirects_to. This reasonably leads to the error: undefined method `get' for RSpec::Core::ExampleGroup::Nested_1::Nested_2:Class.
Is there a way around this or is there a cleaner way to accomplish something similar which I should consider?
Here's an approach using shared examples which triggers the example based on shared metadata (:auth => true in this case) and which parses the example group description to pick up some key parameters.

Have a look at rspec shared example.
Using shared_examples_for seemed like overkill given that I was only concerned with a single example. Furthermore, it_behaves_like("unauthenticated redirects to", '/some_other_path', Proc.new{ get :whatever}) seems unnecessarily verbose. The trick is to use #send() to maintain the proper scope.
