I'm trying to modify this formula to automatically provide the definition in Column B when a word is entered in Column A. Currently, the formula looks like this...
=(index(split(concatenate(importxml("https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/"&$A2,"//span[#class='dtText']")),": ",FALSE,TRUE),1,1))
This works, but it doesn't automatically provide the definition when adding new words. I tried modifying the formula using an arrayformula (seen below), but it repeats the definition for the word in A2.

According to this similar article about Use importXML from column of URLs with arrayformula returning same duplicated result in google sheet:
unfortunately, that won't do because ARRAYFORMULA does not support IMOPRTXML formulas. you could try to look up some scripted workaround for this task or give up on one cell solution

the current formula as you can see in the image works fine but only for column D however if I check the rest of the boxes nothing is subtracted
This is how the formula looks like now: =A31+A32-SUMIF(D3:J14,TRUE,C3:C14) however only works from D3 to D14 and I need it to work from D3 to J14

I think the simplest solution is:
=A31+A32-SUM(ARRAYFORMULA(N(D3:J14)*C3:C14))
Formula rundown
This formula is based on the function N that converts a boolean to an integer (1 for true, 0 for false). We can then multiply by the expense value. Here an example:
=N(D3)*C3
This will equal C3 iff D3 is checked.
Having that we can make the entire table with ARRAYFORMULA:
=ARRAYFORMULA(N(D3:J14)*C3:C14)
Now we can sum all the values to have the total expenses:
=SUM(ARRAYFORMULA(N(D3:J14)*C3:C14))
Add the other cells and you get your result.

I am trying to create an auto-expanding array formula
I have a sheet with my investment asset mix that including amounts of shares owned of each particular stock, and a sheet that tracks when I receive dividends. My goal is to write an automatically expanding array formula that will sum up the amount of shares that own of a stock on the date a dividend is received and return that value. I have written three different formulas that all accomplish this but none of them will auto-expand as an array.
I'm sure there are a lot of solutions I've overlooked. To boil it down, I need an expanding array formula that will sum the "Shares" column of my asset mix sheet ('Asset Mix'!D2:D, or 'AssetMixShares') conditionally. The name of the stock entered in 'Dividends'!C2:C needs to match the name of the stock in 'Asset Mix'!A2:A (or the named range 'AssetMixStocks'). It then needs to check the dates in 'Asset Mix'!C2:C (or 'AssetMixDates') against the dates in 'Dividends'!A2:A and sum all share amounts where the purchase date is less than (earlier than) the Ex-Dividend Date.
I could probably write some sort of vlookup array on the "Running Total" column -- 'Asset Mix'!E:E -- that would solve the issue, but I'm hoping to eliminate that column. I feel very strongly that what I'm trying to do should be possible without the help of a running total column -- I just don't have the knowledge.
I have tried countless functions and formulas, but the four that I currently have in my example worksheet are SUM, SUMPRODUCT, DSUM, and QUERY.

These will all work, as long as I manually drag the formula down, but I want to write some sort of formula that will auto-expand to the bottom of the Dividends sheet.

We can focus in the first formula to understand a way to make it "self-expandable". As we see it contains references to the cells A2 and C2 in "Dividends" sheet:

Every time some data appears in these columns (A and C), the formula should work. We can control the presence of the formula by onEdit trigger, if editing is manual. Consider the code:

It checks any modification on the sheet "Dividends" and copies required formula to the modified row(s). This way the formula is expanded for other rows in use.

I'm trying to find the inverse rank within categories using an ArrayFormula. Let's suppose a sheet containing
A B C

1 0.14 2
1 0.26 3
1 0.12 1
2 0.62 2
2 0.43 1

Columns A:B are input data, with an unknown number of useful rows filled-in manually. A is the classifier categories, B is the actual measurements.
Column C is the inverse ranking of B values, grouped by A. This can be computed for a single cell, and copied to the rest, with e.g.:
=1+COUNTIFS($B$2:$B,"<" & $B2, $A$2:$A, "=" & $A2)
However, if I try to use ArrayFormula:
=ARRAYFORMULA(1+COUNTIFS($B$2:$B,"<" & $B2:$B, $A$2:$A, "=" & $A2:$A))
It only computes one row, instead of filling all the data range.
A solution using COUNT(FILTER(...)) instead of COUNTIFS fails likewise.
I want to avoid copy/pasting the formula since the rows may grow in the future and forgetting to copy again could cause obscure miscalculations. Hence I would be glad for help with a solution using ArrayFormula.

I don't see a solution with array formulas available in Sheets. Here is an array solution with a custom function, =inverserank(A:B). The function, given below, should be entered in Script Editor (Tools > Script Editor). See Custom Functions in Google Sheets.

Explanation: the double array of values in A:B is
filtered, to get rid of empty rows (where A entry is blank)
mapped, by the function that takes every row r1 and then
reduces the array, counting each row (r2) only if it has the same category and smaller value than r1. It returns the count plus 1, so the smallest element gets rank 1.
No tie-breaking is implemented: for example, if there are two smallest elements, they both get rank 1, and there is no rank 2; the next smallest element gets rank 3.
Well this does give an answer, but I had to go through a fairly complicated manoeuvre to find it:
=ArrayFormula(iferror(VLOOKUP(row(A2:A),{sort({row(A2:A),A2:B},2,1,3,1),row(A2:A)},4,false)-rank(A2:A,A2:A,true),""))
So
Sort cols A and B with their row numbers.
Use a lookup to find where those sorted row numbers now are: their position gives the rank of that row in the original data plus 1 (3,4,2,6,5,7).
Return the new row number.
Subtract the rank obtained just by ranking on column A (1,1,1,4,4,4) to get the rank within each group.
In the particular case where the classifiers (col A) are whole numbers and the measurements (col B) are fractions, you could just add the two columns and use rank:

I need to go down 1000 rows.
Another option:

Of the two answers that work, Jacob Jan Tuinstra and AdamL, Jacob gives a better answer. Jacob's runs faster and is easier to remember.
However, why use crazy formulas when it is much easier to use Google Sheets to the fullest?

In the foregoing formula, you can use named ranges instead of the ranges by reference.
=ARRAYFORMULA(range1+range2+range3+range4+range5+range6+range7+range8)
As well, you can sum across rows that span sheets rather than being stuck working with columns within the same sheet.
To fix the formula to block returning zeros for blank rows, use this:
=arrayFormula(if(isNumber(A2:A),A2:A+B2:B+C2:C+D2:D+E2:E+F2:F,G2:G,H2:H))

In this case I use ROW(A1:A10) * COLUMN(A1:H1)^0 to generate the row number matriz. To understand how it works, you can test just this part in your Google sheets:
= ArrayFormula(ROW(A1:A10) * COLUMN(A1:H1)^0)
So, with your row matrix, sumif can operate for each line, is the line has the matched row number, it will be summed up.
Let us not complicate this.
Simply put parenthesis in each of the array in the range.
=arrayformula( Sum( (A1:A):(H1:H) )
This spans not only upto 1000 rows but upto infiinity.
If you really want to limit then go
=arrayformula( Sum( (A1:A1000):(H1:H1000) )
