I have a UITableView, tViewNews
I have a refresh function which downloads data from my server, stores it into core data, and then the table view loads this data from core data.
It works perfectly

Now, when the user first opens the news viewDidLoad(), I would like for the table view to first load from the core data, then asynchronously populate my table view array from the server (using precisely the same method as the refresh function) and then reload the table view.
So I have tried the following code in my viewDidLoad() function.

As you can see the functions being run inside the async request are identical to those inside the refresh function.
But!, the refresh function functions properly, populating and reloading the table view. But the async request does absolutely nothing. The table view remains empty. But the functions are running, as tested with print statements.
Anyone know why this is the case?

When you are using a different thread for loading your data, you have to return to the main thread when finished loading to update the UI.

I am calling this method from my view controller class. Here is the code.

The issue is that API takes some time to return the data, when the data is return the "Completion Listener" is called and it goes inside the "getWeather" method implementation, where it prints the data of array. But when your outside print method is called the API hasn't returned the data yet. So it shows empty array. If you will try to print the data form "weatherData" object after sometime it will work.
The best way I can suggest you is to update your UI with the data inside the "getWeather" method implementation like this:

It isn't an error, when your controller get loaded the array is still empty because your getWeather is still doing its thing (meaning accessing the api, decode the json) when it finishes the callback will have data to return to your controller.
For example if you were using a tableView, you will have reloadData() to refresh the UI, after you assign data to weatherData
Or you could place a property Observer as you declaring your weatherData property.

I'm working on a market cluster for apple maps (here is the plugin https://github.com/ribl/FBAnnotationClusteringSwift ) and I want to display all records on my map at once - for that I need to download all the records from remote webservice, add it to json (I've already done that) and then add all fetched points to an array.

Your codes look very messy to me. However, I'm just assuming that you have successfully fetched the JSON data. Fetching data is asynchronous. You therefore need to add a dispatch code inside.
After your this line of code:

The reason for the failure is too much of data manipulation. There is no need to use so many variables and pass around data unnecessarily. You are getting correct output in console when printing it because you used variables "episodeNumber" and "description".

So better thing would be that you should use episodeNumber and description variables to print data in Cell.

is a short form of
let data = [self.description]
and self.description() is the viewController's description method used for printing debug description. That is why
cell.textLabel!.text = "\(self.data)"
gives you [(Function)], as you just created an array with a stored function in it.
my knowledge on closures is still premature, Im having issues with adding objects to an NSMutableArray from inside a dispatch_async call which retrieves json data from the web, im attempting to add objects to an NSMutableArray which is initialized outside the function but it remains empty when i add objects inside the function, im sure there is another way around this ..... please help! And by the way if I remove the dispatch_async then everything works fine but i want to do the network call on another thread.

I'm trying to repopulate my UITableView with data from another JSON call.
However my current setup doesn't seem to work, and while there are many identical questions on SO the answers I could find I've already tried.
I'm saving my API data in CoreData entity objects. And I'm filling my UITableView with my CoreData entities.
In my current setup I have 3 different API Calls that has a different amount of data, and of course different values. I need to be able to switch between these 3 datasets, and that's what I'm trying to accomplish now. (so far without progress).
I have a function called "loadSuggestions", which is where I assume my fault lies.
First I check for an internet connection.
I set the managedObjectContext
I check what API I need to call (This is determined before the function is called, and I checked that it works as intended)
I delete all the current data from the entity that it's trying to call. (I also tried to delete the data from the last data the UITableView had loaded. That didn't change anything). I also checked that this works. After deleting the data, I checked that it prints out an empty array, I also tried logging the objects it deletes to make sure.
I then fetch the new data, save it into temporary variables. Then save it to my core data.
Then I make my second API call (dependant on a variable from the first one), fetch that data and save it the same way.
I append the object to the array the UITableView fills it's cells from. (I checked that it prints out correctly as well)
And lastly I reload the tableView. (doesn't change a thing)

Currently, when I push to this viewController, this function is called in viewDidAppear like so:

I think that's all the code that could possibly be the cause of the bug. Again I think the most likely cause would be in the loadSuggestions function.
To force update the tableView I also tried calling setNeedsDisplay and setNeedsLayout both on self.view and tableView, neither of which seemed to do anything at all.
Any advice in figuring out why this tableView refuses to update would be an enormous help!
And I apologize for the walls of code, but I havn't been able to find the exact origin of the issue.
This line in the platinumFormulaTapGesture function is incorrect,

This creates a new instance of SuggestionsViewController, which is not the one you have on screen. You need to get a pointer to the one you have. How you do that depends on your controller hierarchy, which you haven't explained fully enough.
