I've made a series of mistakes so I will walk you through what happened.
Something was obviously wrong with my bash (or so I assume, maybe I am wrong) because every time I opened a new terminal window I had to reinstall Ruby to the newest version as well as reinstall Rails completely.
Finally I decided to reinstall RVM and when I checked the version it was telling me my PATH was off. I tried fixing my PATH but was told that 'export: Command not found'. So I deleted my .bash_profile assuming it would reset. Everything seemed dandy at first because when I checked the RVM version again it didn't give me the PATH warning (now I think I realize that's because there was absolutely no path).
To further complicate matters I had previously made my .bashrc reference my .bash_profile, so no love there either.
Could someone please help point me in the right direction to rebuild my .bash_profile, I think from there I can follow the Rails Installfest (http://installfest.railsbridge.org/installfest/osx_rvm), but please correct me if I'm wrong.
Also attached is a picture of my current terminal, which looks like something is off. Actually apparently I can't post pictures so I will tell you, before my prompt in terminal it reads "[username:~] username%"
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'd really like to get in to coding and not let this stop me but I don't know where else to turn...!

hope I can get some help with a problem I have been having. I am getting into Ruby on Rails and used a tutorial (http://guides.rubyonrails.org/getting_started.html) to try to get started with it. It says I need Sqlite3. I followed the steps up to the point where it says to use the ruby bin\rails server command in command prompt. However, when I try to do this, I get the following error message.
When I try to install Sqlite3, I use the x86 version for Windows, as I am using Windows 8.1.
I don't know what I am doing wrong...I am not even sure if the SQlite3 files are in the right place. I use command prompt to check if I have Ruby, Rails, and Sqlite3 all installed, which I do. I also know I have the SQlite3 Ruby gem installed. I have also added SQlite3 to my PATH system variable, but that doesn't seem to work either. I always get the same above error message no matter what I do.
Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
I recommend setting up a Linux VM on your Windows PC and start coding on it instead of on Windows. You'll keep encountering many issues in the future if you stick with Windows. Windows & ruby on rails don't go well together. So, it's better to go with some Linux flavor or preferably Mac.
If you are going to be learning RoR with the goal of ever doing anything serious in the future, here's the best advice I can give to someone starting out: Buy a Mac. NEVER try to use Microsoft for anything but Microsoft office... you'll just end up so frustrated that you will give up. RoR is NOT the toy to try "round peg, square hole" with.
Next, being that your on a Mac, NEVER use sqlite3. You can easily use the correct database which is PostgreSQL. Why is this important?
You're starting out. Keep things very simple. Get a free Heroku account, and install the CLI (for mac). You can then do: "heroku local" to run your code locally (for building), and because it's Mac/PostgreSQL, when you go to push that code live, everything is the same (Heroku is going to be PostgreSQL) so you won't get lost for days trouble shooting the differences between where you're building the code, and where you're running the code.

Not entirely sure what it is, but pretty sure it shouldn't be there. Is it file corruption, as it doesn't look like what I'd generally consider to be file corruption? While I assume it's probably not doing anything useful at the moment, does the presence of semi-arbirary strings in this file represent a problem with my Ruby installation which I need to fix? Is there perhaps another location or set of locations where the right file might be, and perhaps this one isn't being used?
I notice I have a lot of problems with my server, and often find I have to randomly reinstall gems which seem to disappear from my system, usually after the SSH disconnects. Could this file be something to do with that?
It seems odd to me that if this is the location of an important Ruby system file that my Ruby installation should work at all, but it does seem to... Might it be left over from a previously broken installation? I'm only just progressing out of the beginner stages with Ruby, so any insight into what the file does, why it's important and, particularly, how I should progress would be extremely helpful. Also, any suggestions for further reading on Ruby framework eco system which might help me better understand the inner working of stuff like this would hopefully save me from having to take up people's time here with similar questions in the future, though I understand that's a little outside the usual remit for the site.
I am building a Rails plugin for an application at work.
I want to extract logic that was used in multiple locations, but implemented slightly differently, and add new features needed without doing it 2-3 times over.
I've never build a gem, but according to what I was reading it is possible to use rails generate.
However this has not been the case for me.
Running rails g model Something stuff:type:
First interesting thing is that it is generating mini test stuff when I explicitly told the plugin not to use mini test (using Rspec).
Then looking in my folder structure for the plugin, no db/ folder, nothing added to app/models/, and no test/ folder:
Running the command a second time reveals to me that the files are indeed created:
My questions are:
Where is this stuff going? Can I even find out?
Has anyone encountered something similar? Is it due to a misconfiguration, or bug? Essentially, what's happening?
I would truly appreciate any advice or suggestions!

Forgot to mention that I checked within the spec/dummy application in case things were being created there, and it is still empty as I left it.

So I found where the files were by using the find command:
And yeah it added the files to my home folder...
At least now I can just paste them in the right location, but obviously this is bizarre and I'd like to get this resolved, figure out what is going on.
Okay so turns out that yes you may use Rails Generators when building a gem. Also, the generated files will not be placed inside the dummy application unless you are in that directory.
Everything is working as expected on a different computer.
That stuff is going into dummy app that is usually located in test/dummy. In your case, it seems to be located in specs/dummy.

I'm working on a Rails application tutorial and have had the above error come up several times. When I was getting this error it seemed to only be a problem if I used one particular terminal window. I have since restarted the computer and now it is a problem regardless of what I do.
I went to the project on github and copied the information in 'secrets.yml' into my file in case that was the issue but doesn't help. In fact I'm not sure if that is even the file causing the problem because when I shift the code in that file and save it I still get the same error; at those times it points to a line that is now blank in the 'secrets.yml'
Update.
now I am getting this when i run this command
rails generate simple_form:install --foundation
-bash: $: command not found.
only change I did was start the code in 'secrets.yml' lower down, and i added a secret key to my .bash_profile, as it was suggested in tutorial and I had not done it before, and thought that might be the problem.

shut down terminal and tied again and getting the original problem "psyche Error" Yes, thank you for your feedback, I too, although not sure why, suspect it is to do with the 'secret' file or could it be changes the tutorial told me to make to my .bash_profile. The instructions were not very clear, wondering if that is where I messed up. If that is so then I would not know how to fix that.
The Psych gem is the wrapper around libyaml and used within Ruby's YAML class, so it's not surprising you think it could be the 'secrets.yml'; a YAML config file. I'd stay the course and find what isn't being formatted correctly.
I've started using jazz_hands to make my Rails console more useful, but now line/history editing is broken. When I run over the end of the line (ie, wrap), or use up arrow to go into history, the output is garbled.
Terminal settings are fine for everything else, Ubuntu 12. Any ideas? I'm hoping it's something simple and I'm not the first developer to bump into this, but there's nothing in the FAQ, or in the various related Gems (pry etc), and I'm loathe to raise a bug on the project until I check this isn't a well known issue.
It's fixed in the latest update, but here's a few workarounds if for some reason you can't update.
