What is a good approach to pass data through containment view controllers - ios

I am trying to pass instance of object from "initial" view controller to "item1" and "item2". I would like to avoid subclassing UITabBarController as it would make containment view controller know "too much".
Is there any good approach to do that using storyboards or code besides subclassing UITabBarController?

You should subclass, and your subclass should implement a specific protocol for this purpose. Yhen, the containing VC only knows about that protocol and it's appropriate because it has that direct responsibility.

The problem here is that the destinationViewController of your segue is the UITabBarController and not item 1 or item 2. This makes your case quite difficult if you don't want to subclass it, because you can't communicate directly between the instances of your initial VC and the two items.
My recommendation indeed would be to subclass, that's the right way to go in this situation (you might want to add a protocol that specifies the communication interface).
Other options are:
somehow give the initial view controller access to instances of item 1 and item 2 (you'll have to do a lot of this setup in code since Storyboards don't give you the power to do it all completely in IB)
use NSNotification and pass the instances as userInfo (not very elegant but might be the quickest solution for your isse)
store serialized versions of the instances that you want to pass in NSUserDefaults and load them in item 1 and item 2 (might be a lot of overhead)

Accessing linked Segues created in a Storyboard

I am trying to create a class that is similar in functionality to the UITabBarController, but with some fundamentally different functionality. It is called a dropdownViewController and has a primary content view with a UITabBar-like interface at the top of the screen that allows for other UIViewControllers to be modally presented and dismissed over this primary viewController.
I would like this class to be able to be set up using the storyboard to some extent, and I have created a custom Segue that connects my dropDownViewController class with each of its child viewControllers.
My current solution is to assign identifiers to each of the Segues that are then stored in array within the dropdownViewController. I can call the segues programmatically using the performSegueWithIdentifer: method, but this solution isn't as flexible or intuitive as I would like to to be.
Right now, all the custom Segues that I have setup are connected to the "manual" triggered segue in the storyboard connections panel for the dropdownViewController. (I would put screenshots but this is my first post)
However, I want to mimic the functionality of the UITabBarController class, which has an alternate triggered segue in the storyboard connections panel called viewControllers that each of its child views are assigned to. Unless there are some compile-time macros handling these story board interactions, I assume that the UITabBarController uses these connections to determine what it's view controllers are. However, I can't figure out how to setup this functionality with my own class
After searching around for a solution, it seems likely that this is functionality Apple kept for its own use and is limited to their own classes as a feature in Xcode, but if anyone has solutions or ideas it would be greatly appreciated.
I haven't tried this, but I think you should be able to do it with your own custom segues. In the perform method, you would just add the destination view controller to the source view controller's (DropDownViewController) array of view controllers. In the DropDownViewController's viewDidLoad method (or maybe in an initializer or awakeFromNib, not sure which is most appropriate), you would execute all these segues so that they run right after the controller is loaded like is done for a tab bar controller.

Passing references to viewControllers to other viewControllers cocoa touch

The way I am designing my code, with several view controllers, that interact, I have the need to pass data between the view controllers. The way that I am doing it is to "pass a reference", make a pointer, to the target view controller in as a method argument like below:
-(void)aMethodToSetUpInterfaceElements:(UIViewController*)targetCV
Is there anything wrong with this, or do I need to watch out? It works well on a functional level, but what about the design?
There's nothing really wrong about this.

Speaking about design, it's really depends of each case. I could't say preciselly because you didn't give more informations about the funcionality that you are trying to achieve.
Maybe if you want to make your code more generic, to be used in other places or projects, you might consider to perform a delegate to your view controller, but this depends of your views hierarchy and its design. I don't think it is a good idea to pass a view controller in order to transfer its data if you don't have enough reasons. I tend to exposing the minimal knowledge to another object.
For example, say you have two view controllers controllerA and controllerB.
If all you need is just to pass some data from controllerA to controllerB, you pass the data, which might be a NSData, a NSArray, a NSDictionary or your custom data structure. You should not pass the whole controllerA as an parameter to controllerB. Although you can access the data by using the controllerA.data getter, you have exposed too much knowledge about controllerA to controllerB, which may unconsciously ruin your design by increasing the coupling between controllerA and controllerB.
If you are aiming at handling the view transitions, that may be a good reason to pass a view controller as the parameter. So that you can make good use of its -presentViewController:animated:completion: to present a modal view, or push it into a navigation controller, or you probably want to get a reference to its view property and customize your own UI presentation.

My requirement is NOT to use any container or modal or popover, I want to do manual management, I have two view controllers VC1 & VC2. VC1 is the root view controller now I want to switch/transit/move to VC2 what should I do?

Container view controllers (like UINavigationController) allow working around the one-VC-per-screen rule. Since iOS 5, developers have been able and allowed to write our own container controllers (which aren't actually much different from normal VCs). Generally this means that writing non-VC controller objects is less necessary than it used to be.
In your situation, where you want to replace the root view controller, your option 2 makes more sense. Use VCs where you can, and non-VC controller objects only when you can't. Since you're replacing the whole screen's content, just switching the UIWindow rootViewController makes the most sense (edit: alternately, many devs would just use a navigation controller to present the second view, because it's simple and convenient).

How to use UIViewController in non-modal way?

I'm having a uiscrollview with 3 slots, each holding a tableview with different data.
As you can imagine, handling 3 tableviews on the same viewcontroller is a bit of a mess.
So I was thinking about using multiple uiviewcontrollers to handle the different logic required for each tableview. However I can't seem to do this since uiviewcontrollers load in a modal way/blocking the entire previous view: this leaves me unable to continue to use the uiscrollview placed on my root view controller.
Is there a way to solve this? Or pack UIView logic and behavior in some sort of stub/hidden uiviewcontroller that doesn't block the view below?
You are looking at this the wrong way. Separating your tableviews is a good idea, but there is no need to use a view controller.
Let's say you have three tableViews: tableViewOne, tableViewTwo, and tabelViewThree.
The problem (as I understand it) is that all of your logic code (datasource and delegate methods) are getting all mixed up. So, just create a subclass of NSObject for each tableView and use that object for the datasource/delegate. Just make sure you set the datasource/delegate properties of the tableView to the right object.

iOS: better design with UIViewController parent-children classes

I have a parent class DocViewController (inheriting from UIViewController) and 2 subclasses:
PhotoViewController
MapViewController
In the parent class (DocViewController) I have the following code:

That I'm using to delete the children classes from UINavigationView stack. (It is not about the question anyway: I have a segmented control and I'm pushing such classes, but I still want my "Back" button to ignore them).
It works. My only problem is that is not very object-oriented since the parent class import the children for the if statement. Right ?

Yes, it's not very object oriented. Would be better to implement a method on the classes. Maybe something like
-(BOOL)shouldPopTwo;
and then
if ([previousView shouldPopTwo]) { ... }
And then each subclass can implement as it needs to.
BUT
In most cases I think you should avoid the temptation to build class hierarchies with UIViewControllers. Controllers are typically the least reusable objects in an MVC setup as they are designed to very specifically define behavior and map it to specific Model objects. Certainly hierarchies can be built (As they have been in the SDK), but the structure, function and abstraction needs to be very carefully planned and constructed.
Instead, you should probably create reusable UIViews and then implement different UIViewControllers to define how the application should use and respond to those views.
In response to comments below:
Sounds like you might be trying to use a navigation controller in a way it wasn't intended for and actually your last two view controllers should be a single view controller. A view controller is primarily intended to manage a full screen's worth of content. If I understand correctly, in your case you have a segmented control that should stay on screen and be responsible for switching the content in the rest of the available space. I would suggest you have a single view controller and it's view would contain the segmented control and a 'canvas' which would be used to display alternate views. The view controller would hold references to the views it is managing so that it could switch them in and out (if you want UINavigationController-style animations you'll have to implement that yourself).
Finally, you would need to decide: Can this single view controller act as the controller for the two subviews? Or should each view have its own controller? If this UIViewController subclass is a one-off, and it is only intended for these two views (say PhotoMapViewController) you could choose the first, easier option. If you want this to work with any UIView (say SegmentedControlViewController), then each view should have its own NSObject controller (not UIViewController). From the apple docs:

But that would require substantially more abstraction and setup.
If the overall goal is to (I'm guessing) map a collection of photos, in the first case in the calling view controller you might have code like:

[self.navigationController pushViewController:pmViewController];
and PhotoMapViewController : UIViewController would be responsible for creating and initializing the two views its segmented control manages.
I won't go into the code of the second case because it's much more elaborate.
Finally, look to the OOP principle of favoring composition over inheritance to see a broader perspective of why you might do things this way instead of your first implementation.
Any time you start to set up a class hierarchy you should ask yourself - Is it really a subclass? and then stop and ask yourself - No wait, is it REALLY a subclass?? :) Good luck!
