I am have to show three different cells like (Facebook post) with all different size and design. The data is coming from server.What is the best way to deal with it. I have to use UITableview or UICollectionview there are three kinds of cells like:
News
Movies
Spots
Each cell type has different design, I want to identify each cell type from the data obtained from server and configure and display the correct cell.
The Cells Look Like This :
In the storyboard, add as many prototype cells you need. Then, to each create a different identifier (and its own class). Shape each to how you want it to look.

I am trying to setup a tableview that will have 10 different cells that can be in any order, with any amount of each type. I have a very dynamic data source. Most of the cells will have dynamic heights, and also contain another UITableView or a UICollectionView. So there are nested views.
This all feels messy, since a TableViewCell is going to contain a TableView/CollectionView that has it's own cells. Data sources, and delegates get confusing fast.
Designing the cells in interface builder is also difficult, since there is very little space I can work with when configuring 10 different cell types.
So my question is, what would be the best way to setup so many different cell types in one table? Is it bad to have cells with TableViews / CollecitonViews inside of them?
In the process of discovering the UICollectionView as a replacement for the UITableView.
I have created a very basic collection that contains a single section and single Cell, but displaying multiple values that is amended into a NSString. I believe it's a clunky way of doing things.

i will try to share some of my experience:
Create separate custom UITableViewCelll as per requirement like : textfield, textview, imageview, label etc. this class must not dependent on data calculation it is only for cosmetics UI. that means there must not be any method like updateCellWithData:(someDATAObj). This logic must go in some cetegory as discussed below.
Register separate custom UITableViewCelll with your tableview.
Create separate class (NSObject) as datasource and delegate for your UITableView.
Use category to populate data in your custom UITableView Cell. some thing like updateCellWithData:(someDATAObj).
Use constant file for your constants like height for tableView Cell, reuse identifier names, notification name.

I need to display a table with in my iPhone app:
neither the number of cells nor the contents are known at compile time, but only at run time.
Views for each cell may differ, one cell has textField and another may have some other view control.
Should I consider Static or prototype cells?
Should I consider tableViewController or viewController with tableview in it?
Any thing I need to consider before I start coding? Thanks in advance
For The issue of dynamic Number of cell at Run time, you can call reload data for table view at any time you have the data source ready.
Prototype Cells should be used with no problem.
Simple Table View will be sufficient for the task.
You have to make cell, either in code or in storyboard, for each type of cell you want, 1 table View can have multiple types of prototype cells, Just name them differently and then make the objects of only the specific cell of which the data is best suited.
It is not that difficult but do handle the data source with extreme care.
Should I consider Static or prototype cells?
If you know all possible subview combinations that your cells might need to display the data appropriately, and they are relatively few, make one prototype for each. for example:
One text field,
Two labels,
One image view and a label,
...etc.
Otherwise, just use the plain-vanilla UITableViewCell (no subclassing) and remove/add subviews at runtime when reusing them (that is, inside the method -tableView:cellForRowAtIndexPath:).
Should I consider tableViewController or viewController with tableview

The only reason I would choose UIViewController + UITableView over UITableViewController is if -for example- I needed the table view to only take up part of the main view's bounds/screen, and display some other subview in the remainder. Otherwise, you get so much "for free" with UITableViewController that there's just no point in implementing all of that from scratch.
You have to choose prototype cell, u can create different types of cell depending upon your requirement.Any think ok for u, u can create tableview controller or view controller.
I am currently working on an iPad application that uses a table view to present data, I was inspired by the iTunes application in iPad that present it's data in multiple columns in a very nice and neat manner, and the most interesting thing is that during the portrait mode the itunes application displays data in 2 columns but when the user switches to landscape mode, it switches the display to 3 columns (since there are plenty of space to display data horizontally).

but i found out that iOS SDK only supports single column for tableview (it would be nice to utilize the entire space provided on iPad screen to present data), i did some research and i found out that the best way to present data in multiple columns yet like spreadsheet style is to use datagridview instead, but iOS SDK did not provide any data grid view controls for iOS developers.
I found out over the internet some customized tables like:
AQGridView.

The summary answer is, place multiple data "views" across in a single cell.
The more detailed answer:
Create custom views that represent the single cells you want. You can for this purpose make them resizable enough to work two across or three across (they will get loaded into 1/2 or 1/3 of the cells bounds).
Then make a custom UITableView cell, that can take two or three data items - load up an instance of the custom view previously created in the cell for each data item you have, placing them next to each other. You can have the cell do the view layout when groups of data items are added.
In the cellForRow code in the table delegate/datasource, you use your data source in groups of two or three (and report the row count accordingly) to pass along to the custom cell.
Sorry I can't share code, but I have used this technique before in other applications.
What's wrong with creating a UIView class to represent a single cell, and another that lays out an array of those cells in a grid? Put your grid view in a UIScrollView and you're about done.
UITableView is obviously a pretty complex class. Much of that is to make it very general, very reusable, and able to support a huge number of rows. Your class doesn't necessarily need to be that complicated -- if you have a fairly small number of cells, your "grid" could really just be a UIView in which you lay out cells in rows and columns. UITableView removes cells that aren't seen in order to save memory; you might need to do something similar if you have hundreds of cells, especially if they're large, but a few dozen probably won't require that.
In short, since you need a grid view for a particular use, you don't need to do all the extra work that would be required for a general, reusable solution.
