How to display contacts in tableview - Objective C - ios

I want to create program that will import contacts from adressbook and show them in tableview. I already did code to download contacts from adressbook but when I'm adding them into Array and then trying to show in TableView they don't appear when I'm starting app. Here's code:
#interface ViewController ()
#end
#implementation ViewController
- (void)viewDidLoad {
[self getPersonOutOfAddressBook];
[super viewDidLoad];
// Do any additional setup after loading the view, typically from a nib.
}
- (NSInteger)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView numberOfRowsInSection:(NSInteger)section
{
return [self.tableData count];
}
- (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath
{
static NSString *cellIdentifier = #"Identifier";
UITableViewCell *cell = [tableView dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:cellIdentifier];
if (cell == nil) {
cell = [[UITableViewCell alloc] initWithStyle:UITableViewCellStyleDefault reuseIdentifier:cellIdentifier];
}
Person *person = [self.tableData objectAtIndex:indexPath.row];
cell.textLabel.text = person.fullName;
return cell;
}
- (void)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath {
}
- (void)getPersonOutOfAddressBook
{
//1
CFErrorRef error = NULL;
ABAddressBookRef addressBook = ABAddressBookCreateWithOptions(NULL, &error);
__block BOOL accessGranted = NO;
if (ABAddressBookRequestAccessWithCompletion != NULL) { // We are on iOS 6
dispatch_semaphore_t semaphore = dispatch_semaphore_create(0);
ABAddressBookRequestAccessWithCompletion(addressBook, ^(bool granted, CFErrorRef error) {
accessGranted = granted;
dispatch_semaphore_signal(semaphore);
});
}
if (addressBook != nil) {
NSLog(#"Succesful.");
//2
NSArray *allContacts = (__bridge_transfer NSArray *)ABAddressBookCopyArrayOfAllPeople(addressBook);
//3
NSUInteger i = 0; for (i = 0; i < [allContacts count]; i++)
{
Person *person = [[Person alloc] init];
ABRecordRef contactPerson = (__bridge ABRecordRef)allContacts[i];
//4
NSString *firstName = (__bridge_transfer NSString *)ABRecordCopyValue(contactPerson,
kABPersonFirstNameProperty);
NSString *lastName = (__bridge_transfer NSString *)ABRecordCopyValue(contactPerson, kABPersonLastNameProperty);
NSString *fullName = [NSString stringWithFormat:#"%# %#", firstName, lastName];
person.firstName = firstName; person.lastName = lastName;
person.fullName = fullName;
[self.tableData addObject:person];
}
//8
CFRelease(addressBook);
} else {
//9
NSLog(#"Error reading Address Book");
}
}
- (void)didReceiveMemoryWarning {
[super didReceiveMemoryWarning];
// Dispose of any resources that can be recreated.
}
#end
When I'm using debugger it shows that variables firstname, lastname and then fullname have access to adressbook because I can see name or last name of person. But I think there is problem with adding to array because I can't see anything in this array. Could someone help me? I'm beginner with Objective - C so please forbearance :)

To use an array you need to both declare it and create it. You do this by allocating and initializing the array.
self.tableData = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init];

I want to fetch contact list from phone on tableview in ios?

ABRecordRef contactPerson = (__bridge ABRecordRef)allContacts[i];
//4
NSString *firstName = (__bridge_transfer NSString *)ABRecordCopyValue(contactPerson,
kABPersonFirstNameProperty);
NSString *lastName = (__bridge_transfer NSString *)ABRecordCopyValue(contactPerson, kABPersonLastNameProperty);
NSString *fullName = [NSString stringWithFormat:#"%# %#", firstName, lastName];
person.firstName = firstName; person.lastName = lastName;
person.fullName = fullName;
//email
//5
ABMultiValueRef emails = ABRecordCopyValue(contactPerson, kABPersonEmailProperty);
//6
NSUInteger j = 0;
for (j = 0; j < ABMultiValueGetCount(emails); j++) {
NSString *email = (__bridge_transfer NSString *)ABMultiValueCopyValueAtIndex(emails, j);
if (j == 0) {
person.homeEmail = email;
NSLog(#"person.homeEmail = %# ", person.homeEmail);
}
else if (j==1) person.workEmail = email;
}
//7
[self.tableData addObject:person];
}
//8
CFRelease(addressBook);
} else {
//9
NSLog(#"Error reading Address Book");
}
}
But i am not getting the contact list. only successfull is coming on console window. I am having 3 tab bar on one tab of contact i want to show the contact list of phone in tableview. Plz help me , thanks.
You need to first get permission to access the native DB...
- (void)requestPermissionForContactsAccessAndFetch
{
ABAuthorizationStatus status = ABAddressBookGetAuthorizationStatus();
if (status != kABAuthorizationStatusAuthorized && status != kABAuthorizationStatusNotDetermined) {
// tell user to enable contacts in privacy settings
NSLog(#"You previously denied access: You must enable access to contacts in settings");
return;
}
CFErrorRef error = NULL;
ABAddressBookRef addressBook = ABAddressBookCreateWithOptions(NULL, &error);
if (!addressBook) {
NSLog(#"ABAddressBookCreateWithOptions error: %#", CFBridgingRelease(error));
return;
}
ABAddressBookRequestAccessWithCompletion(addressBook, ^(bool granted, CFErrorRef error) {
if (error) {
NSLog(#"ABAddressBookRequestAccessWithCompletion error: %#", CFBridgingRelease(error));
}
if (granted) {
[self getContactsFromAddressBook:addressBook];
} else {
// tell user to enable contacts in privacy settings
NSLog(#"You just denied access: You must enable access to contacts in settings");
}
CFRelease(addressBook);
});
}
Then you can get all contacts in an array...
- (NSMutableArray*)getContactsFromAddressBook:(ABAddressBookRef)addressBook
{
NSArray *allData = CFBridgingRelease(ABAddressBookCopyArrayOfAllPeople(addressBook));
NSInteger contactCount = [allData count];
for (int i = 0; i < contactCount; i++) {
ABRecordRef person = CFArrayGetValueAtIndex((__bridge CFArrayRef)allData, i);
NSString *firstName = CFBridgingRelease(ABRecordCopyValue(person, kABPersonFirstNameProperty));
NSString *lastName = CFBridgingRelease(ABRecordCopyValue(person, kABPersonLastNameProperty));
NSMutableDictionary *dictionary = [NSMutableDictionary dictionary];
if (firstName) {
dictionary[#"firstName"] = firstName;
}
if (lastName) {
dictionary[#"lastName"] = lastName;
}
ABMultiValueRef phones = ABRecordCopyValue(person, kABPersonPhoneProperty);
CFIndex phoneNumberCount = ABMultiValueGetCount(phones);
if (phoneNumberCount > 0) {
NSString *phone = CFBridgingRelease(ABMultiValueCopyValueAtIndex(phones, 0));
dictionary[#"phone"] = phone;
}
// or if you wanted to iterate through all of them, you could do something like this...
// for (int j = 0; j < phoneNumberCount; j++) {
// NSString *phone = CFBridgingRelease(ABMultiValueCopyValueAtIndex(phones, j));
// }
if (phones) {
CFRelease(phones);
}
[arrOfContacts addObject:dictionary];
}
}

iOS search bar not showing results

*Update: This actually works, the style for my custom cell hasn't come across and so the cell looks blank. How then do I get the searchResultsTableView to use my custom cell?
I have implemented a search bar in my table view. Searching, filtering all work when I debug, but when I enter characters into the search bar, the results do not load or show. This is everything I'm doing:
#interface InviteTableViewController ()<UIAlertViewDelegate, UISearchBarDelegate, UISearchDisplayDelegate>
#property(nonatomic, strong) NSNumber *contactsCount;
#property(nonatomic, strong) InviteTableViewCell *selectedCell;
#property(strong, nonatomic) NSMutableArray *filteredContactArray;
#property (weak, nonatomic) IBOutlet UISearchBar *contactsSearchBar;
#end
#implementation InviteTableViewController
- (id)initWithStyle:(UITableViewStyle)style
{
self = [super initWithStyle:style];
if (self) {
// Custom initialization
}
return self;
}
- (void) extractAllContacts: (ABAddressBookRef) addressBookRef{
NSMutableArray *contactsArray = [NSMutableArray array];
CFArrayRef allPeople = ABAddressBookCopyArrayOfAllPeople(addressBookRef);
CFIndex numberOfPeople = ABAddressBookGetPersonCount(addressBookRef);
for(int i = 0; i < numberOfPeople; i++){
ABRecordRef person = CFArrayGetValueAtIndex( allPeople, i );
NSString *firstName = (__bridge NSString *)(ABRecordCopyValue(person, kABPersonFirstNameProperty));
if(firstName){
ABMultiValueRef emails = ABRecordCopyValue(person, kABPersonEmailProperty);
for (CFIndex i = 0; i < ABMultiValueGetCount(emails); i++) {
NSString *email = (__bridge_transfer NSString *) ABMultiValueCopyValueAtIndex(emails, i);
MyUser *amUser = [[MyUser alloc] init];
amUser.email =email;
NSString *fullName =[NSString stringWithFormat:#"%# %#",firstName, (__bridge NSString *)(ABRecordCopyValue(person, kABPersonLastNameProperty))];
amUser.fullName = fullName;
[contactsArray addObject:amUser];
}
}
}
NSLog(#"================================count ============= %d", [contactsArray count]);
contactsArray = [contactsArray sortedArrayUsingComparator:^NSComparisonResult(id a, id b) {
NSDate *first = [(MyUser*) a fullName];
NSDate *second = [(MyUser*)b fullName];
return [first compare:second];
}];
self.inviteContactsArray = contactsArray;
self.filteredContactArray = [NSMutableArray arrayWithCapacity:[contactsArray count]];
[self.tableView reloadData];
}
- (void)viewDidLoad
{
[super viewDidLoad];
_contactsCount = [NSNumber numberWithInt:0];
ABAddressBookRef addressBookRef = ABAddressBookCreateWithOptions(NULL, NULL);

This is what it looks like:
Agree with #rdelmar.
BUT There is a kind of tricky behavior in TableView, if you change the code in
- (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath
{
....
InviteTableViewCell *cell = [tableView dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:CellIdentifier];
....
}
to
InviteTableViewCell *cell = [self.tableView dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:CellIdentifier];
if added the prefix "self." your code should works fine.
and
if ( cell == nil )
{
cell = [[InviteTableViewCell alloc] initWithStyle:UITableViewCellStyleSubtitle reuseIdentifier:CellIdentifier];
}
is unnecessary. it will just create a standard "Subtitle Cell" for you that seems not you want, just remove them.
If you want to use the same cell for your main table and the search results table, you should make the cell in a xib (or you could do it entirely in code). In viewDidLoad, register the nib for both table views,
- (void)viewDidLoad {
[super viewDidLoad];
[self.searchDisplayController.searchResultsTableView registerNib:[UINib nibWithNibName:#"InviteTableViewCell" bundle:nil] forCellReuseIdentifier:#"InviteCell"];
[self.tableView registerNib:[UINib nibWithNibName:#"InviteTableViewCell" bundle:nil] forCellReuseIdentifier:#"inviteCell"];
}
In cellForRowAtIndexPath, you can do something like this,
- (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath {
InviteTableViewCell *cell = [tableView dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:#"InviteCell" forIndexPath:indexPath];
MyUser *person = ([tableView isEqual:self.tableView])? self.inviteContactsArray[indexPath.row] : self.filteredContactArray[indexPath row];
cell.nameLabel.text = person.fullName;
cell.emailLabel.text = person.email;
return cell;
}
If you've already setup your cell in the storyboard, you can copy and paste it into an empty xib file, so you don't have to set it up all over again. You can delete the cell from your storyboard table view since you will be getting the cell from the xib file instead.
Below line in viewdidload should do the trick
self.searchDisplayController.searchResultsTableView.rowHeight = self.tableView.rowHeight

Outputting read in NSMutable Array

Problem: I have read in values from Windows Azure. Through NSLogs I am able to see that my application does indeed read in from the table on the Azure Server. However Displaying the values has become a problem.
Situation: So far I have an NSMutableArray object in the ViewController.m file. I have accessed the array and been able to assign the values from the results of the read from the table (in windows azure) to the mutableArray. My problem is that I am trying to display it through a tableview however nothing displays, and when I move down the table view, the application crashes.
I believe the main problem is this line:
cell.textLabel.text = [clubs objectAtIndex:indexPath.row];
Here is the ViewController.m code:
#import "ViewController.h"
#interface ViewController ()
#end
#implementation ViewController{
NSDictionary *courseDetails;
NSArray *justCourseNames;
NSDictionary *webcourseDetails;
NSArray *webjustCourseNames;
NSDictionary *clubNames;
NSArray *location;
NSMutableArray *clubs;
NSInteger amount;
}
- (NSInteger)numberOfSectionsInTableView:(UITableView *)tableView{
return 2;
}
-(NSString *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView titleForHeaderInSection:(NSInteger)section{
if (section == 0)
{
return #"Milton Keynes";
}
else{
return #"Stafford";
}
}
- (NSInteger)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView numberOfRowsInSection:(NSInteger)section{
if (section == 0)
{
return clubs.count;
}
else{
return webcourseDetails.count;
}
}
- (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath{
UITableViewCell *cell = [[UITableViewCell alloc]initWithStyle:UITableViewCellStyleDefault reuseIdentifier:#"cell"];
UIImage *image = [UIImage imageNamed:#"ClubCellImage"];
[cell.imageView setImage:image];
//removing the line of code below seems to fix the crash. this is the line of code to display the details
cell.textLabel.text = [clubs objectAtIndex:indexPath.row];
/*if (indexPath.section == 0)
{
//cell.textLabel.text = justCourseNames[indexPath.row];
//cell.detailTextLabel.text = courseDetails[justCourseNames[indexPath.row]];
}
else
{
cell.textLabel.text = clubs[indexPath.row];
//cell.textLabel.text = webjustCourseNames[indexPath.row];
//cell.detailTextLabel.text = webcourseDetails[webjustCourseNames[indexPath.row]];
}*/
return cell;
}
- (id)initWithNibName:(NSString *)nibNameOrNil bundle:(NSBundle *)nibBundleOrNil
{
self = [super initWithNibName:nibNameOrNil bundle:nibBundleOrNil];
if (self) {
// Custom initialization
}
return self;
}
- (void)viewDidLoad
{
[super viewDidLoad];
self.client = [MSClient clientWithApplicationURLString:#"https://clublocatortimogunmakin.azure-mobile.net/"
applicationKey:#"ecxnaXEfNpeOvwYYgcViJJoumZlZng45"];
// Do any additional setup after loading the view.
NSURL *url = [[NSBundle mainBundle] URLForResource:#"courses" withExtension:#"plist"];
MSTable *itemTable = [_client tableWithName:#"Item"];
courseDetails = [NSDictionary dictionaryWithContentsOfURL:url];
justCourseNames = courseDetails.allKeys;
NSURL *weburl = [[NSBundle mainBundle] URLForResource:#"courses_web" withExtension:#"plist"];
webcourseDetails = [NSDictionary dictionaryWithContentsOfURL:weburl];
webjustCourseNames = courseDetails.allKeys;
[itemTable readWithCompletion:^(NSArray *results, NSInteger totalCount, NSError *error) {
clubs = [results mutableCopy];
amount = totalCount;
if (error) {
NSLog(#"Error: %#", error);
} else {
//NSLog(#"Item read, id: %#", [results objectAtIndex:1]);
for (int i = 0; i < results.count; i++)
{
NSLog(#"Item read, id: %#", [results objectAtIndex:i]);
}
}
}];
}
- (void)didReceiveMemoryWarning
{
[super didReceiveMemoryWarning];
// Dispose of any resources that can be recreated.
}
#end
You are contradicting yourself when you implement the required tableview datasource methods (i.e. the numberOfRowsInSection and the cellForRowAtIndexPath methods)
You provide the count of cells here:
- (NSInteger)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView numberOfRowsInSection:(NSInteger)section{
if (section == 0)
{
return clubs.count;
}
else{
return webcourseDetails.count;
}
}
So, your cellForRowAtIndexPath method should look something like this:
- (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath{
// cell init/dequeuing
if (indexPath.section == 0) {
cell.textLabel.text = clubs[indexPath.row]; //Assuming that is an NSString instance
} else {
cell.textLabel.text = webcourseDetails[indexPath.row]; //Assuming that is an NSString instance
}
return cell;
}
Please, try to do the following (I think you're not re-loading table after all items are read):
[itemTable readWithCompletion:^(NSArray *results, NSInteger totalCount, NSError *error) {
clubs = [results mutableCopy];
amount = totalCount;
if (error) {
NSLog(#"Error: %#", error);
} else {
//NSLog(#"Item read, id: %#", [results objectAtIndex:1]);
for (int i = 0; i < results.count; i++)
{
NSLog(#"Item read, id: %#", [results objectAtIndex:i]);
}
[YOURTABLENAMEHERE reloadData];
}
}];
Replace YOURTABLENAMEHERE with a reference to your table.

Automatically add contacts from address book to tableview

I'm trying to get my contacts list in iOS to automatically add contacts to the contacts list without the user having to manually do it - similiar to how Whatsapp works. My code below simply shows prewritten values for the tableView and allows a bar button item to display the contacts list but not allow it to write any new entries to the tableView.
- (void)viewDidLoad
{
CFErrorRef *error = NULL;
ABAddressBookRef addressBook = ABAddressBookCreateWithOptions(NULL, error);
CFArrayRef allPeople = ABAddressBookCopyArrayOfAllPeople(addressBook);
CFIndex numberOfPeople = ABAddressBookGetPersonCount(addressBook);
for(int i = 0; i < numberOfPeople; i++) {
ABRecordRef person = CFArrayGetValueAtIndex( allPeople, i );
NSString *firstName = (__bridge NSString *)(ABRecordCopyValue(person, kABPersonFirstNameProperty));
NSString *lastName = (__bridge NSString *)(ABRecordCopyValue(person, kABPersonLastNameProperty));
NSLog(#"Name:%# %#", firstName, lastName);
ABMultiValueRef phoneNumbers = ABRecordCopyValue(person, kABPersonPhoneProperty);
for (CFIndex i = 0; i < ABMultiValueGetCount(phoneNumbers); i++) {
NSString *phoneNumber = (__bridge_transfer NSString *) ABMultiValueCopyValueAtIndex(phoneNumbers, i);
NSLog(#"phone:%#", phoneNumber);
}
}

Showing contact name and no. from address book, throwing exception NSInvalidArgumentException

I'm retrieving Contact name and phone no. from the Address book in my application. I'm printing them in log and it is working fine. But when I try to show them on the table view, I'm getting the exception NSInvalidArgumentException. I have a button on the view controller, pressing which the table view should get populated with the contact names and their no.s:
- (IBAction)syncContacts:(id)sender
{
ABAddressBookRef addressBook = ABAddressBookCreate();
CFArrayRef allPeople = ABAddressBookCopyArrayOfAllPeople(addressBook);
for (int i = 0; i < ABAddressBookGetPersonCount(addressBook); i++) {
ABRecordRef ref = CFArrayGetValueAtIndex(allPeople, i);
NSString *contact = (NSString *)CFBridgingRelease(ABRecordCopyCompositeName(ref));
// NSString* phone = nil;
ABMultiValueRef phoneNumbers = ABRecordCopyValue(ref,kABPersonPhoneProperty);
// if (ABMultiValueGetCount(phoneNumbers) > 0) {
NSString *phone = (__bridge_transfer NSString*)
ABMultiValueCopyValueAtIndex(phoneNumbers, 0);
// }
NSDictionary *curContact=[NSDictionary dictionaryWithObjectsAndKeys:(NSString *)contact,#"Name",phone,#"phone",nil];
[self.phoneContacts addObject:curContact];
}
tableView.delegate = self;
tableView.dataSource = self;
[tableView reloadData];
NSLog(#"%#",self.phoneContacts);
NSLog(#"%i",[self.phoneContacts count]);
}
And the table view methods are:
-(NSInteger)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView numberOfRowsInSection:(NSInteger)section
{
return [self.phoneContacts count];
}
- (NSInteger)numberOfSectionsInTableView:(UITableView *)tableView
{
return 1;
}
- (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath
{
static NSString *simpleTableIdentifier = #"Cell";
UITableViewCell *cell = [tableView dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:simpleTableIdentifier];
if (cell == nil) {
cell = [[UITableViewCell alloc] initWithStyle:UITableViewCellStyleDefault reuseIdentifier:simpleTableIdentifier];
}
// cell.textLabel.text = [self.phoneContacts objectAtIndex:indexPath.row];
cell = [self.phoneContacts objectAtIndex:indexPath.row];
return cell;
}
What's wrong with the table view? When the phoneContacts had only the name, it was working fine.([phoneContacts addObject:contact]). But now when I'm adding the dictionary object, it is throwing this exception.
I've made a change.
cell = [[self.phoneContacts objectAtIndex:indexPath.row] objectForKey:#"AddressBook"];
The exception doesn't come now. But nothing is getting shown on screen.
Here's the edited method:
- (IBAction)syncContacts:(id)sender
{
ABAddressBookRef addressBook = ABAddressBookCreate();
CFArrayRef allPeople = ABAddressBookCopyArrayOfAllPeople(addressBook);
for (int i = 0; i < ABAddressBookGetPersonCount(addressBook); i++) {
ABRecordRef ref = CFArrayGetValueAtIndex(allPeople, i);
// NSNumber *contact = (NSNumber *)ABRecordCopyComposite();// (ref));
NSString *contact = (NSString *)CFBridgingRelease(ABRecordCopyCompositeName(ref));
// NSString* phone = nil;
ABMultiValueRef phoneNumbers = ABRecordCopyValue(ref,kABPersonPhoneProperty);
// if (ABMultiValueGetCount(phoneNumbers) > 0) {
NSString *phone = (__bridge_transfer NSString*)

The table view remains unchanged as given in the original post. It is now working.
The commented line cell.textLabel.text = [self.phoneContacts objectAtIndex:indexPath.row]; doesn't work? Can you set breakpoint and check if the cell's textlabel have the text assigned?
Assigning the cell using
cell = [[self.phoneContacts objectAtIndex:indexPath.row] objectForKey:#"AddressBook"]
wouldn't work, unless you defined phoneContacts to be subclass of UITableViewCell.
