Mongoid Search by Array of Association Id's - ruby-on-rails

I have a Rails 4.2, Mongoid 4 project with these models:
class Customer #aka Company
include Mongoid::Document
has_many :branches
end
class Branch
include Mongoid::Document
field :name, type: String, default: ""
belongs_to :customer
end
I want to find all the Customers (aka Companies) that have a branch with name "New York". I would think that this code would work:
branches = Branch.where(name: "New York").map(&:_id)
=> [BSON::ObjectId('54f76cef6272790316390100')]
Customer.where(:branch_ids => branches).entries
However, it always returns an empty array, no matter what I try. In place of branch_ids, I've also tried branches, branch, branches_id, and others, but to no avail. I've also tried to convert the BSON::ObjectID to plain string, but that doesn't work either.
So, basically, how can I search a model based on an array of association ids? Thanks.

If the relations are
Customer has_many :branches and
Branch belongs_to :customer,
Then branches collection will have a customer_id column and not the reverse. So you can do
cust_ids = Branch.where(name: "New York").map(&:customer_id)
Customer.find(cust_ids)
Since you need only the customer ids from the first query, it is advisable to use pluck
cust_ids = Branch.where(name: "New York").pluck(:customer_id)

You can use Symbol#elem_match like this:
Customer.where(:branches.elem_match => { name: "New York" })
And Queryable#elem_match like this:
Customer.elem_match(branches: { name: "New York" })
Both query will give return you Customers of 'New York' branches.

I'm using the authentication gem devise, which gives access to the current_user helper, which points at the current user logged in.
I have built a query for a controller that satisfied the following conditions:
Get the current_user's mailbox, whose communication's are filtered by the box field, where box == 'inbox'.
It was constructed like this (and is working):
current_user.mailbox.communications.where(:box => 'inbox')
My issue arrises when I try to build upon this query. I wish to chain queries so that I only obtain messages whose last message is not from the current_user. I am aware of the .last method, which returns the most recent record. I have come up with the following query but cannot understand what would need to be adjusted in order to make it work:
current_user.mailbox.communications.where(:box => 'inbox').where(:messages.last.from_user => {'$ne' => current_user})
This query produces the following result:
undefined method 'from_user' for #<Origin::Key:0x007fd2295ff6d8>
I am currently able to accomplish this by doing the following, which I know is very inefficient and want to change immediately:
mb = current_user.mailbox.communications.inbox
comms = mb.reject {|c| c.messages.last.from_user == current_user}
I wish to move this logic from ruby to the actual database query. Thank you in advance to anyone who assists me with this, and please let me know if anymore information is helpful here.
Ok, so what's happening here is kind of messy, and has to do with how smart Mongoid is actually able to be when doing associations.
Specifically how queries are constructed when 'crossing' between two associations.
In the case of your first query:
current_user.mailbox.communications.where(:box => 'inbox')
That's cool with mongoid, because that actually just desugars into really 2 db calls:
Get the current mailbox for the user
Mongoid builds a criteria directly against the communication collection, with a where statement saying: use the mailbox id from item 1, and filter to box = inbox.
Now when we get to your next query,
current_user.mailbox.communications.where(:box => 'inbox').where(:messages.last.from_user => {'$ne' => current_user})
Is when Mongoid starts to be confused.
Here's the main issue: When you use 'where' you are querying the collection you are on. You won't cross associations.
What the where(:messages.last.from_user => {'$ne' => current_user}) is actually doing is not checking the messages association. What Mongoid is actually doing is searching the communication document for a property that would have a JSON path similar to: communication['messages']['last']['from_user'].
Now that you know why, you can get at what you want, but it's going to require a little more sweat than the equivalent ActiveRecord work.
Here's more of the way you can get at what you want:

I'm not sure my code is 100% (you probably need to check the field names in the documents to make sure I'm searching through the right ones), but I think you get the general pattern.

ActiveScaffold or ActiveRecord how to search on an associated model's column

I have following models
Customer: name:string, phone:string
has_many :sales
Sale: amount:float, item_name:string
belongs_to :customer
Now in ActiveScaffold I get a simple single line input box to search for sales.
What I need to do is, be able to search sales by the customer name as well.
There should be a way to do this with ActiveScaffold, or atleast with native active record functionality.
One way I can think of is, adding the customer name as a column and populate it along with sale while it is created.Not sure what the best approach to achieve this should be.

Is it possible to define something like
Sales
searchable_columns :amount, :association => {:customer => name}, :as => yumyum_column
now when i search by
Sale.where(:yumyum_column => 1000)
or
Sale.where(:yumyum_column => "Customer name")
both will return the same record.
Try something like this:

To show the customer name in the list of results try something like:

If you have (and you should have) a customer_id in your sales table, then you can query sales with any customer attribute you like with a simple join:
Sales.joins(:customers).where(:'customers.name' => :john)
which translates to the following SQL
"SELECT `sales`.* FROM `sales` INNER JOIN `customers` ON `sales`.`customer_id` = `customers`.`id` WHERE `customers`.`name` = 'john'"

ActiveRecord group by on a join

Really been struggling trying to get a group by to work when I have to join to another table. I can get the group by to work when I don't join, but when I want to group by a column on the other table I start having problems.
Tables:
Book
id, category_id
Category
id, name
ActiveRecord schema:
class Category < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :books
end
class Book < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :category
end
I am trying to get a group by on a count of categories. I.E. I want to know how many books are in each category.
I have tried numerous things, here is the latest,
books = Book.joins(:category).where(:select => 'count(books.id), Category.name', :group => 'Category.name')
I am looking to get something back like
[{:name => fiction, :count => 12}, {:name => non-fiction, :count => 4}]
Any ideas?

How about this:
Category.joins(:books).group("categories.id").count
It should return an array of key/value pairs, where the key represents the category id, and the value represents the count of books associated with that category.
If you're just after the count of books in each category, the association methods you get from the has_many association may be enough (check out the Association Basics guide). You can get the number of books that belong to a particular category using
#category.books.size
If you wanted to build the array you described, you could build it yourself with something like:
array = Categories.all.map { |cat| { name: cat.name, count: cat.books.size } }
As an extra point, if you're likely to be looking up the number of books in a category frequently, you may also want to consider using a counter cache so getting the count of books in a category doesn't require an additional trip to the database. To do that, you'd need to make the following change in your books model:
# books.rb
belongs_to :category, counter_cache: true
And create a migration to add and initialize the column to be used by the counter cache:

EDIT: After some experimentation, the following should give you close to what you want:
counts = Category.joins(:books).count(group: 'categories.name')
That will return a hash with the category name as keys and the counts as values. You could use .map { |k, v| { name: k, count: v } } to then get it to exactly the format you specified in your question.
I would keep an eye on something like that though -- once you have a large enough number of books, the join could slow things down somewhat. Using counter_cache will always be the most performant, and for a large enough number of books eager loading with two separate queries may also give you better performance (which was the reason eager loading using includes changed from using a joins to multiple queries in Rails 2.1).

mongoid batch update

I'd like to update a massive set of document on an hourly basis.
Here's the
fairly simple Model:

include Mongoid::Document

field :ordered
field :eta
so every hour i get a fresh stock list, where :stock,:ordered and :eta "might" have changed
and i need to update them all.
Edit:
the stocklist contains just
:article_nr, :stock, :ordered, :eta
wich i parse to a hash
In SQL i would have taken the route to foreign keying the article_nr to a "stock" table, dropping the whole stock table, and running a "collection.insert" or something alike
But that approach seems not to work with mongoid.
Any hints? i can't get my head around collection.update
and changing the foreign key on belongs_to and has_one seems not to work
(tried it, but then Article.first.stock was nil)
But there has to be a faster way than iterating over the stocklist array of hashes and doing
something like
Article.where( :article_nr => stocklist['article_nr']).update( stock: stocklist['stock'], eta: stocklist['eta'],orderd: stocklist['ordered'])
UPDATING
You can atomically update multiple documents in the database via a criteria using Criteria#update_all. This will perform an atomic $set on all the attributes passed to the method.
# Update all people with last name Oldman with new first name.
Person.where(last_name: "Oldman").update_all(
first_name: "Pappa Gary"

Now I can understood a bit more. You can try to do something like that, assuming that your article nr is uniq.

Then you when you create stock:
Stock.create(:article_id => "123", :eta => "200")
Then it will automaticly get assign to article with article_nr => "123"
So you can always call last stock.
my_article.stocks.last
If you want to more precise you add field :article_nr in Stock, and then :after_save make new_stock.article_id = new_stock.article_nr
This way you don't have to do any updates, just create new stocks and they always will be put to correct Article on insert and you be able to get latest one.
If you can extract just the stock information into a separate collection (perhaps with a has_one relationship in your Article), then you can use mongoimport with the --upsertFields option, using article_nr as your upsertField. See http://www.mongodb.org/display/DOCS/Import+Export+Tools.

How to create links between two tables

Ok so I'm starting on normalising my database. Currently I have one model "Products" which is populated with about 60,000 products via a data feed (XML), which contains a product with a category name and a merchant name. I want to split these into 3 models; products, categories and merchants.
Each product has one category and one merchant so the natural idea is to create these models:
category_id | category_name
merchant_id | merchant_name
I can work out the code to associate between the models i.e. has_one, belongs_to etc but I'm struggling to work out to automatically associate a new Product with a category and a merchant programatically.
I've seen examples in books where your start with an empty database and that seems pretty straightforward. However, I'm starting off with a full database and a list of Category names.
Here is my product creation statement which is working great:

:brand => node.xpath("./brand/text()").inner_text,

Would I need to do something like this, see the :category line, (i know the following is wrong btw!)...

Assuming the columns are called category_name and merchant_name, and you've set up the associations on Category and Merchant, you could do something like this:
Product.all do |product|
product.category = Category.find_or_create_by_category_name(product.category_name)
product.merchant = Merchant.find_or_create_by_merchant_name(product.merchant_name)
product.save!
end
It will take a while, so for large datasets you might need a better solution.
So would this actually set the :category value in the products table to a category_id or set the value to the category_name?
.find_or_create_by does a find on the attribute and returns the matching row, or creates one if it does not exist. When creating the association via `.category=, Rails will set the foreign key to match the id of the row in the categories table.
So to answer your question more directly:
Product.create(:category=>Category.find_or_create_by_name("Magic Beans"))
is like doing this:
category = Category.find_by_name("Magic Beans")
if category.nil?
category = Category.create(:name=>"Magic Beans")
end
product = Product.new
product.category = category
product.save
where the penultimate step sets the foreign key category_id to the value category.id. By convention associations are set up such that the foreign key is the model name suffixed with _id, so your products table should have both category_id and merchant_id.
