temporarily Stop Bundling and minification [duplicate] - asp.net-mvc

I have debug="true" in both my web.config(s), and I just don't want my bundles minified, but nothing I do seems to disable it. I've tried enableoptimisations=false, here is my code:

Conditional compilation directives are your friend:

If you have debug="true" in web.config and are using Scripts/Styles.Render to reference the bundles in your pages, that should turn off both bundling and minification. BundleTable.EnableOptimizations = false will always turn off both bundling and minification as well (irrespective of the debug true/false flag).
Are you perhaps not using the Scripts/Styles.Render helpers? If you are directly rendering references to the bundle via BundleTable.Bundles.ResolveBundleUrl() you will always get the minified/bundled content.

To disable bundling and minification just put this your .aspx file
(this will disable optimization even if debug=true in web.config)

You can turn off minification in your bundles simply by Clearing your transforms.

I personally found this useful when wanting to bundle all my scripts in a single file but needed readability during debugging phases.

I tried a lot of these suggestions but noting seemed to work. I've wasted quite a few hours only to found out that this was my mistake:
#Scripts.Render("/bundles/foundation")
It always have me minified and bundled javascript, no matter what I tried. Instead, I should have used this:
#Scripts.Render("~/bundles/foundation")
The extra '~' did it. I've even removed it again in only one instance to see if that was really it. It was... hopefully I can save at least one person the hours I wasted on this.

There is also some simple way to control minification (and other features) manually. It's new CssMinify() transformer using, like this:

That's convenient when you want to have some bundles special part only to be minified. Let's say, you are using some standard (jQuery) styles, which are getting under your feet (taking lots of excessive browser requests to them), but you want to keep unminified your own stylesheet. (The same - with javascript).

I combined a few answers given by others in this question to come up with another alternative solution.
Goal: To always bundle the files, to disable the JS and CSS minification in the event that <compilation debug="true" ... /> and to always apply a custom transformation to the CSS bundle.
My solution:
1) In web.config:

Here's how to disable minification on a per-bundle basis:

Sidenote: The paths used for your bundles must not coincide with any actual path in your published builds otherwise nothing will work. Also make sure to avoid using .js, .css and/or '.' and '_' anywhere in the name of the bundle. Keep the name as simple and as straightforward as possible, like in the example above.

Notice that in order to make these classes future-proof we surgically remove the js/css minifying instances instead of using .clear() and we also insert a mime-type-setter transformation without which production builds are bound to run into trouble especially when it comes to properly handing over css-bundles (firefox and chrome reject css bundles with mime-type set to "text/html" which is the default):

Note that you might have to take extra steps to make your css-bundles work in terms of fonts etc. But that's a different story.

Search for EnableOptimizations keyword in your project
So if you find
BundleTable.EnableOptimizations = true;
turn it false.
This does disable minification,
And it also disables bundling entirely

Just to supplement the answers already given, if you also want to NOT minify/obfuscate/concatenate SOME files while still allowing full bundling and minification for other files the best option is to go with a custom renderer which will read the contents of a particular bundle(s) and render the files in the page rather than render the bundle's virtual path. I personally required this because IE 9 was $*%#ing the bed when my CSS files were being bundled even with minification turned off.

I am sure creating an optional renderer for javascript files would need little to update to this helper as well.

If you're using LESS/SASS CSS transformation there's an option useNativeMinification which can be set to false to disable minification (in web.config). For my purposes I just change it here when I need to, but you could use web.config transformations to always enable it on release build or perhaps find a way modify it in code.

Tip: The whole point of this is to view your CSS, which you can do in the browser inspect tools or by just opening the file. When bundling is enabled that filename changes on every compile so I put the following at the top of my page so I can view my compiled CSS eaily in a new browser window every time it changes.

This may become useful to someone in the future as the new framework, when setup through VS, gets a default web.config, web.Debug.config and web.Release.config. In the web.release.config you will find this line:

this was seeming to override any inline changes I made. I commented this line out and we were gravy (in terms of seeing non-minified code in a "release" build)

HTTP Error 404.0 - Not Found on action in controller. MVC [duplicate]

I have a project that requires my URLs have dots in the path. For example I may have a URL such as www.example.com/people/michael.phelps
URLs with the dot generate a 404. My routing is fine. If I pass in michaelphelps, without the dot, then everything works. If I add the dot I get a 404 error. The sample site is running on Windows 7 with IIS8 Express. URLScan is not running.
I tried adding the following to my web.config:

Unfortunately that didn't make a difference. I just receive a 404.0 Not Found error.
This is a MVC4 project but I don't think that's relevant. My routing works fine and the parameters I expect are there, until they include a dot.
What do I need to configure so I can have dots in my URL?
I got this working by editing my site's HTTP handlers. For my needs this works well and resolves my issue.
I simply added a new HTTP handler that looks for specific path criteria. If the request matches it is correctly sent to .NET for processing. I'm much happier with this solution that the URLRewrite hack or enabling RAMMFAR.
For example to have .NET process the URL www.example.com/people/michael.phelps add the following line to your site's web.config within the system.webServer / handlers element:

There are other posts suggesting that the solution to this issue is RAMMFAR or RunAllManagedModulesForAllRequests. Enabling this option will enable all managed modules for all requests. That means static files such as images, PDFs and everything else will be processed by .NET when they don't need to be. This options is best left off unless you have a specific case for it.
After some poking around I found that relaxedUrlToFileSystemMapping did not work at all for me, what worked in my case was setting RAMMFAR to true, the same is valid for (.net 4.0 + mvc3) and (.net 4.5 + mvc4).

I got stuck on this issue for a long time following all the different remedies without avail.
I noticed that when adding a forward slash [/] to the end of the URL containing the dots [.], it did not throw a 404 error and it actually worked.
I finally solved the issue using a URL rewriter like IIS URL Rewrite to watch for a particular pattern and append the training slash.
My URL looks like this: /Contact/~firstname.lastname so my pattern is simply: /Contact/~(.*[^/])$

Just add this section to Web.config, and all requests to the route/{*pathInfo} will be handled by the specified handler, even when there are dots in pathInfo. (taken from ServiceStack MVC Host Web.config example and this answer https://stackoverflow.com/a/12151501/801189)

Many of the suggested answers doesn't seem to work in MVC 5.0.
As the 404 dot problem in the last section can be solved by closing that section with a trailing slash, here's the little trick I use, clean and simple.
While keeping a convenient placeholder in your view:

Super easy answer for those that only have this on one webpage. Edit your actionlink and a + "/" on the end of it.

Depending on how important it is for you to keep your URI without querystrings, you can also just pass the value with dots as part of the querystring, not the URI.
E.g. www.example.com/people?name=michael.phelps will work, without having to change any settings or anything.
You lose the elegance of having a clean URI, but this solution does not require changing or adding any settings or handlers.
You might want to think about using dashes instead of periods.
In Pro ASP MVC 3 Framework they suggest this about making friendly URLs:
Avoid symbols, codes, and character sequences. If you want a word
separator, use a dash (/my-great-article). Underscores are unfriendly,
and URL-encoded spaces are bizarre (/my+great+article) or disgusting
(/my%20great%20article).
It also mentions that URLs should be be easy to read and change for humans. Maybe a reason to think about using a dash instead of a dot also comes from the same book:
Don't use file name extensions for HTML pages (.aspx or .mvc), but do use them for specialized file types (.jpg, .pdf, .zip, etc). Web browsers don't care about file name extensions if you set the MIME type appropriately, but humans still expect PDF files to end with .pdf
So while a period is still readable to humans (though less readable than dashes, IMO), it might still be a bit confusing/misleading depending on what comes after the period. What if someone has a last name of zip? Then the URL will be /John.zip instead of /John-zip, something that can be misleading even to the developer that wrote the application.
Would it be possible to change your URL structure?
For what I was working on I tried a route for
url: "Download/{fileName}"
but it failed with anything that had a . in it.
I switched the route to

My helpers in the view also picked up on it

Maybe you could put an unneeded word like "/view" or action on the end of your route so your property can end with a trailing / something like /mike.smith/view
As solution could be also considering encoding to a format which doesn't contain symbol., as base64.

It's as simple as changing path="." to path="". Just remove the dot in the path for ExensionlessUrlHandler-Integrated-4.0 in web.config.

Tried all the solutions above but none of them worked for me. What did work was I uninstalling .NET versions > 4.5, including all its multilingual versions; Eventually I added newer (English only) versions piece by piece. Right now versions installed on my system is this:

And its still working at this point. I'm afraid to install 4.6.2 because it might mess everything up.
So I could only speculate that either 4.6.2 or all those non-English versions were messing up my configuration.
I was able to solve my particular version of this problem (had to make /customer.html route to /customer, trailing slashes not allowed) using the solution at https://stackoverflow.com/a/13082446/1454265, and substituting path="*.html".

Also, (related) check the order of your handler mappings. We had a .ashx with a .svc (e.g. /foo.asmx/bar.svc/path) in the path after it. The .svc mapping was first so 404 for the .svc path which matched before the .asmx.
Havn't thought too much but maybe url encodeing the path would take care of this.
This is the best solution I have found for the error 404 on IIS 7.5 and .NET Framework 4.5 environment, and without using: runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true".

Why might I not be getting any results from MiniProfiler?

I can't seem to get any results from MiniProfiler.
I can see the XHR POST to /mini-profiler-resources/results returning a 404. The chrome request inspector gives me a standard server 404 page.
A GET on the same URL also returns a 404, but there is a message saying that "no results were found for the specified id" (I did add the id in the querystring).
When I look at /mini-profiler-resources/results-index it just gives me an empty table with the field headings in - name, started, sql, duration, etc.
I've tried a few things - details below - at this stage I am at a loss as to what I can try next. Any pointers or suggestions for debugging this problem would be much appreciated.

I have set all my output caching to 1 second.
I was using a custom applicationhost.config file to test on a custom url.
I tried removing the custom url bindings and just using the standard localhost:51347.

Dots in URL causes 404 with ASP.NET mvc and IIS

I have a project that requires my URLs have dots in the path. For example I may have a URL such as www.example.com/people/michael.phelps
URLs with the dot generate a 404. My routing is fine. If I pass in michaelphelps, without the dot, then everything works. If I add the dot I get a 404 error. The sample site is running on Windows 7 with IIS8 Express. URLScan is not running.
I tried adding the following to my web.config:

Unfortunately that didn't make a difference. I just receive a 404.0 Not Found error.
This is a MVC4 project but I don't think that's relevant. My routing works fine and the parameters I expect are there, until they include a dot.
What do I need to configure so I can have dots in my URL?
I got this working by editing my site's HTTP handlers. For my needs this works well and resolves my issue.
I simply added a new HTTP handler that looks for specific path criteria. If the request matches it is correctly sent to .NET for processing. I'm much happier with this solution that the URLRewrite hack or enabling RAMMFAR.
For example to have .NET process the URL www.example.com/people/michael.phelps add the following line to your site's web.config within the system.webServer / handlers element:

There are other posts suggesting that the solution to this issue is RAMMFAR or RunAllManagedModulesForAllRequests. Enabling this option will enable all managed modules for all requests. That means static files such as images, PDFs and everything else will be processed by .NET when they don't need to be. This options is best left off unless you have a specific case for it.
After some poking around I found that relaxedUrlToFileSystemMapping did not work at all for me, what worked in my case was setting RAMMFAR to true, the same is valid for (.net 4.0 + mvc3) and (.net 4.5 + mvc4).

I got stuck on this issue for a long time following all the different remedies without avail.
I noticed that when adding a forward slash [/] to the end of the URL containing the dots [.], it did not throw a 404 error and it actually worked.
I finally solved the issue using a URL rewriter like IIS URL Rewrite to watch for a particular pattern and append the training slash.
My URL looks like this: /Contact/~firstname.lastname so my pattern is simply: /Contact/~(.*[^/])$

Just add this section to Web.config, and all requests to the route/{*pathInfo} will be handled by the specified handler, even when there are dots in pathInfo. (taken from ServiceStack MVC Host Web.config example and this answer https://stackoverflow.com/a/12151501/801189)

MVC 5.0 Workaround.
Many of the suggested answers doesn't seem to work in MVC 5.0.
As the 404 dot problem in the last section can be solved by closing that section with a trailing slash, here's the little trick I use, clean and simple.
While keeping a convenient placeholder in your view:

Depending on how important it is for you to keep your URI without querystrings, you can also just pass the value with dots as part of the querystring, not the URI.
E.g. www.example.com/people?name=michael.phelps will work, without having to change any settings or anything.
You lose the elegance of having a clean URI, but this solution does not require changing or adding any settings or handlers.
You might want to think about using dashes instead of periods.
In Pro ASP MVC 3 Framework they suggest this about making friendly URLs:
Avoid symbols, codes, and character sequences. If you want a word
separator, use a dash (/my-great-article). Underscores are unfriendly,
and URL-encoded spaces are bizarre (/my+great+article) or disgusting
(/my%20great%20article).
It also mentions that URLs should be be easy to read and change for humans. Maybe a reason to think about using a dash instead of a dot also comes from the same book:
Don't use file name extensions for HTML pages (.aspx or .mvc), but do use them for specialized file types (.jpg, .pdf, .zip, etc). Web browsers don't care about file name extensions if you set the MIME type appropriately, but humans still expect PDF files to end with .pdf
So while a period is still readable to humans (though less readable than dashes, IMO), it might still be a bit confusing/misleading depending on what comes after the period. What if someone has a last name of zip? Then the URL will be /John.zip instead of /John-zip, something that can be misleading even to the developer that wrote the application.
Would it be possible to change your URL structure?
For what I was working on I tried a route for

but it failed with anything that had a . in it.
I switched the route to

Maybe you could put an unneeded word like "/view" or action on the end of your route so your property can end with a trailing / something like /mike.smith/view
As solution could be also considering encoding to a format which doesn't contain symbol., as base64.

It's as simple as changing path="." to path="". Just remove the dot in the path for ExensionlessUrlHandler-Integrated-4.0 in web.config.

Tried all the solutions above but none of them worked for me. What did work was I uninstalling .NET versions > 4.5, including all its multilingual versions; Eventually I added newer (English only) versions piece by piece. Right now versions installed on my system is this:

And its still working at this point. I'm afraid to install 4.6.2 because it might mess everything up.
So I could only speculate that either 4.6.2 or all those non-English versions were messing up my configuration.
I was able to solve my particular version of this problem (had to make /customer.html route to /customer, trailing slashes not allowed) using the solution at https://stackoverflow.com/a/13082446/1454265, and substituting path="*.html".

Also, (related) check the order of your handler mappings. We had a .ashx with a .svc (e.g. /foo.asmx/bar.svc/path) in the path after it. The .svc mapping was first so 404 for the .svc path which matched before the .asmx.
Havn't thought too much but maybe url encodeing the path would take care of this.
This is the best solution I have found for the error 404 on IIS 7.5 and .NET Framework 4.5 environment, and without using: runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true".

How to skip static http requests when using one UoW per http request

I am using one NHibernate UoW per http request in my .net mvc 2 web application. I was just wondering how I can skip creating a UoW for static http requests like images.
You can convert your unit of work implementation to be an implementation of IActionFilter instead of an HttpModule. So OnActionExecuting you can begin your unit of work and OnActionExecuted you can end the unit of work. Then just apply it to your controllers and actions that do data processing.

the staticfilehandler does not apply Session to the request.
I'm not sure if the StaticFileHandler actually issues Begin/EndRequest but I'm guessing not. If you notice that it is triggered for your static files, I assume that your order of handlers are wrong or wildcards for handlers are wrong.
If you map "*" to you MVC handler, maybe you might need to actually move your static content into a subfolder and override the web.config and clear all handlers and only add StaticFileHandler on that.
I noticed that you mention that you use a IHttpModule for the UoW, so I'm guessing that you hijack that for every request.
You could do this:
create a subfolder that you call for example "/static/" and move your static files here. In that folder, create a web.config which contains the following:

Auto-versioning in ASP.NET MVC for CSS / JS Files?

I have read lots of article on how to auto-version your CSS/JS files - but none of these really provide an elegant way to do this in ASP.NET MVC.
This link - How to force browser to reload cached CSS/JS files? - provides a solution for Apache - but I'm a little confused how this could be implemented via ASP.NET MVC ?
Would anyone be able to provide some advice how to do this on IIS7 and ASP.NET MVC - so that CSS/JS files automatically have a version number inserted in the URL without changing the location of the file ?
That is, so links come out link this etc presumably using the URL Rewrite or ?

This code uses the version number of the current assembly as a query string parameter on the file path's it emits. When I do an update to the site and the build number increments, so does the querystring parameter on the file, and so the user agent will re-download the file.
UPDATE: The previous version did not work on Azure, I have simplified and corrected below. (Note, for this to work in development mode with IIS Express, you will need to install URL Rewrite 2.0 from Microsoft http://www.iis.net/downloads/microsoft/url-rewrite - it uses the WebPi installer, make sure to close Visual Studio first)

I recently spent an entirely fruitless day trying to get automatic bundling (to support auto-versioning) in C# / Net 4.6 / MVC 5 / Razor to work. I read many articles both on StackOverflow and elsewhere, yet I could not find an end-to-end walk through of how to set it up. I also do not care for the way files are version-ed (by appending a query string with version to the static file request - ie. somefile.js?v=1234) because I have been told by some that certain proxy servers ignore query strings when caching static resources.
So after a short trip down the rabbit hole, I've rolled my own version for auto-versioning and included full instructions on how to get it working below.

THE PROBLEM: You generally have 2 types of javascript / css files in a project.
1) 3 party libraries (such as jquery or mustache) that very rarely change (and when they do, the version on the file generally changes) - these can be bundled / minified on an "as-needed" basis using WebGrease or JSCompress.com (just include the bundled file/version in your _Layout.cshtml)
2) page specific css/js files that should be refreshed whenever a new build is pushed. (without having the user clear thier cache or do multiple refreshes)
My Solution: Auto-increment the assembly version every time the project is built, and use that number for a routed static file on the specific resources you would like to keep refreshed. (so something.js is included as something.v1234.js with 1234 automatically changing every time the project is built) - I also added some additional functionality to ensure that .min.js files are used in production and regular.js files are used when debugging (I am using WebGrease to automate the minify process) One nice thing about this solution is that it works in local / dev mode as well as production.

The first file is a bundle of all my 3rd party libraries I've created manually with WebGrease. If I add or change any of the files in the bundle (which is rare) then I manually rename the file to all3bnd101.min.js, all3bnd102.min.js, etc... This file does not match the rewrite handler, so will remain cached on the client browser until you manually re-bundle / change the name.
The second file is ui.js (which will be written as ui.v12345123.js or ui.v12345123.min.js depending on if you are running in debug mode or not) This will be handled / rewritten. (you can set a breakpoint in Application_OnBeginRequest of Global.asax.cs to watch it work)

It doesn't require any url helpers and works no matter what's running the in background. To be honest I haven't throughly tested this method, but I've found it always fixes any resource caching issues people were experiencing.
You'd probably have to update the v= manually, but it wouldn't be terribly hard to append a version parameter to the resources from a config file somewhere.
