how to parse json in iOS - ios

this is the json string that i am receiving from the API:
"incentives_and_benefits" = "{\"food\":{\"0\":\"\"},\"commission\":{\"0\":\"\"},\"uniform\":{\"0\":\"\"},\"transport\":{\"0\":\"\"},\"extras\":{\"0\":\"\"}}";
and i assigned it to dictionary. Now I need to get the values inside the dictionary.
I tried using the solution given here: How to get values from dict
Heres what I have so far:
NSString *strIncentives = [[self.jobDetailDict objectForKey:#"sub_slots"] objectForKey:#"incentives_and_benefits"];
NSData *jsonData = [strIncentives dataUsingEncoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding];
NSError *e;
NSDictionary *dict = [NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData:jsonData options:nil error:&e];
NSLog(#"DICT: %#", dict);
NSString *food = [dict objectForKey:#"food"];
NSLog(#"DICT: %#", food);
NSString *commission = [dict objectForKey:#"commission"];
NSLog(#"DICT: %#", commission);
NSString *uniform = [dict objectForKey:#"uniform"];
NSLog(#"DICT: %#", uniform);
NSString *transport = [dict objectForKey:#"transport"];
NSLog(#"DICT: %#", transport);
NSString *extras = [dict objectForKey:#"extras"];
NSLog(#"DICT: %#", extras);
Now I need to check whether food's value is 0 or 1..When Food's value is 1 then i need to get Hello string and display it. (this is just an example) food: {"1":"Hello"}
if([food isEqualToString:#""])
{
//the string will be placed here
NSLog(#"FOOD Available")
}
when i reach the if statement i get an error:
[__NSCFDictionary isEqualToString:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance
How will i be able to resolve this?
please help and thank you in advance.

if([[dict objectForKey:#"food"]isEqualToString:#“”]){
NSLog(#"FOOD Available")
}

Get values from NSDictionary

Hi I'm new to iOS development. I want to get response and add those values to variable.
I tried it but I'm getting below response. I don't understand why there is slashes in this response.
#"[{\"VisitorID\":\"2864983a-e26b-441a-aedf-84e2a1770b8e\",\"ProfileID\":\"69c02265-abca-4716-8a2f-ac5d642f876a\",\"CompanyID\":null,\"VisitorName\":\"kanasalingam\",\"OperatorName\":\"baman\",\"Image\":null,\"isocode\":\"lk\",\"CurrentOperator\":[\"69c02265-abca-4716-8a2f-ac5d642f876a\"]},{\"VisitorID\":\"133bc108-b3bf-468a-9397-e1b0dba449db\",\"ProfileID\":\"69c02265-abca-4716-8a2f-ac5d642f876a\",\"CompanyID\":null,\"VisitorName\":\"kumar\",\"OperatorName\":\"baman\",\"Image\":null,\"isocode\":\"lk\",\"CurrentOperator\":[\"69c02265-abca-4716-8a2f-ac5d642f876a\"]}]"
I tried this :
- (void) sendOtherActiveChats:(NSDictionary *) chatDetails{
NSLog(#"inside sendOtherActiveChats");
NSLog(#"otherDetails Dictionary : %# ", chatDetails);
NSString *VisitorID = [chatDetails objectForKey:#"VisitorID"];
NSString *ProfileID = [chatDetails objectForKey:#"ProfileID"];
NSString *CompanyID = [chatDetails objectForKey:#"CompanyID"];
NSString *VisitorName = [chatDetails objectForKey:#"VisitorName"];
NSString *OperatorName = [chatDetails objectForKey:#"OperatorName"];
NSString *isocode = [chatDetails objectForKey:#"isocode"];
NSLog(#"------------------------Other Active Chats -----------------------------------");
NSLog(#"VisitorID : %#" , VisitorID);
NSLog(#"ProfileID : %#" , ProfileID);
NSLog(#"CompanyID : %#" , CompanyID);
NSLog(#"VisitorName : %#" , VisitorName);
NSLog(#"OperatorName : %#" , OperatorName);
NSLog(#"countryCode: %#" , isocode);
NSLog(#"------------------------------------------------------------------------------");
}
Can some one help me to get the values out of this string ?
You are getting Array of Dictionary in response, but your response is in string so you convert it to NSArray using NSJSONSerialization like this way for that convert your response string to NSData and after that use that data with JSONObjectWithData: to get array from it.
NSString *jsonString = #"[{\"VisitorID\":\"2864983a-e26b-441a-aedf-84e2a1770b8e\",\"ProfileID\":\"69c02265-abca-4716-8a2f-ac5d642f876a\",\"CompanyID\":null,\"VisitorName\":\"kanasalingam\",\"OperatorName\":\"baman\",\"Image\":null,\"isocode\":\"lk\",\"CurrentOperator\":[\"69c02265-abca-4716-8a2f-ac5d642f876a\"]},{\"VisitorID\":\"133bc108-b3bf-468a-9397-e1b0dba449db\",\"ProfileID\":\"69c02265-abca-4716-8a2f-ac5d642f876a\",\"CompanyID\":null,\"VisitorName\":\"kumar\",\"OperatorName\":\"baman\",\"Image\":null,\"isocode\":\"lk\",\"CurrentOperator\":[\"69c02265-abca-4716-8a2f-ac5d642f876a\"]}]";
NSData *data = [jsonString dataUsingEncoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding];
NSError *e;
NSMutableArray *jsonArray = [NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData:data options:NSJSONReadingMutableContainers error:&e];
Now loop through the array and access the each dictionary from it.
for (NSDictionary *dic in jsonArray) {
NSLog(#"%#",[dic objectForKey:#"VisitorID"]);
... and so on.
}
First you need to parse your string.
NSString *aString = #"[{\"VisitorID\":\"2864983a-e26b-441a-aedf-84e2a1770b8e\",\"ProfileID\":\"69c02265-abca-4716-8a2f-ac5d642f876a\",\"CompanyID\":null,\"VisitorName\":\"kanasalingam\",\"OperatorName\":\"baman\",\"Image\":null,\"isocode\":\"lk\",\"CurrentOperator\":[\"69c02265-abca-4716-8a2f-ac5d642f876a\"]},{\"VisitorID\":\"133bc108-b3bf-468a-9397-e1b0dba449db\",\"ProfileID\":\"69c02265-abca-4716-8a2f-ac5d642f876a\",\"CompanyID\":null,\"VisitorName\":\"kumar\",\"OperatorName\":\"baman\",\"Image\":null,\"isocode\":\"lk\",\"CurrentOperator\":[\"69c02265-abca-4716-8a2f-ac5d642f876a\"]}]";
NSData *data = [aString dataUsingEncoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding];
id json = [NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData:data options:0 error:nil];
NSLog(#"%#",[[json objectAtIndex:0] objectForKey:#"VisitorID"]);
So you have JSON string and array of 2 objects. So write following code
This will convert JSON string to Array
NSData *myJSONData = [YOUR_JSON_STRING dataUsingEncoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding];
NSError *error;
NSMutableArray *arrayResponse = [NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData:myJSONData options:NSJSONReadingMutableContainers error:&error];
Now use for loop and print data as
for (int i = 0; i < arrayResponse.count; i++) {
NSDictionary *dictionaryTemp = [arrayResponse objectAtIndex:i];
NSLog(#"VisitorID : %#",[dictionaryTemp valueForKey:#"VisitorID"]);
NSLog(#"ProfileID : %#",[dictionaryTemp valueForKey:#"ProfileID"]);
NSLog(#"CompanyID : %#",[dictionaryTemp valueForKey:#"CompanyID"]);
NSLog(#"VisitorName : %#",[dictionaryTemp valueForKey:#"VisitorName"]);
}
Now there are good chances that you will get NULL for some keys and it can cause in crash. So avoid those crash by using Null validations.

Save json object in sqlite like text and retransform to dictionary on read

I want to save a Json Object in a field (text) sqlite and then read it again with a select and retransform to NSDictionary or NSMutableArray to parse the key/values
This is how i save actually in the sqlite DB
As you see, is a song object from the iTunes api. I want to read that object and parse it.
This is how i make the select query and save it in a NSDictionary while i filling and NSMutableArary
globals.arrayMyPlaylists = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init];
// Form the query.
NSString *query = #"select * from myplaylists";
// Get the results.
NSArray *listas = [[NSArray alloc] initWithArray:[self.dbManager loadDataFromDB:query]];
for (int i = 0; i < listas.count; i++) {
NSMutableDictionary *dictionary = [NSMutableDictionary dictionary];
NSLog(#"lista %d %# %#", i, listas[i][0], listas[i][1]);
[dictionary setObject:listas[i][0] forKey:#"id"];
[dictionary setObject:listas[i][1] forKey:#"nombre"];
NSString *query2 = [NSString stringWithFormat:#"select cancion from canciones where idplaylist = %#", listas[i][0]];
NSArray *canciones = [[NSArray alloc] initWithArray:[self.dbManager loadDataFromDB:query2]];
[dictionary setObject:canciones forKey:#"canciones"];
[globals.arrayMyPlaylists addObject:dictionary];
dictionary = nil;
}
When i try to read it in the cellForRowAtIndexPath method
NSArray *canciones = [[NSArray alloc] initWithArray:[[globals.arrayMyPlaylists objectAtIndex:indexPath.row] valueForKey:#"canciones"]];
and try to get the value for the key artworkUrl100
[cell.tapa1 sd_setImageWithURL:[NSURL URLWithString:[NSString stringWithFormat:#"%#", [[canciones objectAtIndex:i] valueForKey:#"artworkUrl100"]]] placeholderImage:nil];
i get the error
Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSUnknownKeyException', reason: '[<__NSCFString 0x7ff575810600> valueForUndefinedKey:]: this class is not key value coding-compliant for the key artworkUrl100.'
i understand i'm messing up in some way with dictionarys/nsmutablearrays. I need some help. Thanks!
EDIT: this is how i save the data in the DB
NSString *query = [NSString stringWithFormat:#"insert into canciones (idplaylist, cancion) values ('%#', '%#')", [[globals.arrayMyPlaylists objectAtIndex:indexPath.row] valueForKey:#"id"], self.elementoSeleccionado];
[self.dbManager executeQuery:query];
self.elementoSeleccionado is the NSMutableArray with the "cancion" object and it's saved like it's shows the first image.
EDIT 2: this is what i get trying schmidt9's answer
EDIT 3: OK, i have the json string escaped. How i have to parse now?
You should parse your output first with NSJSONSerialization:
NSString *query2 = [NSString stringWithFormat:#"select cancion from canciones where idplaylist = %#", listas[i][0]];
NSArray *canciones = [[NSArray alloc] initWithArray:[self.dbManager loadDataFromDB:query2]];
// I suppose your array canciones should contain only one song object ...
NSError *error = nil;
id object = [NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData:canciones[0] options:0 error:&error];
if(error) {
// handle error ...
}
if([object isKindOfClass:[NSDictionary class]])
{
NSDictionary *result = object;
[dictionary setObject:result forKey:#"canciones"];
}
Edit
Saving to database
2 options:
- if you get a prepared json string, save it directly to DB, but before you should escape quotes. See eg. here
- if you have NSDictionary:
- (NSString*)JSONStringWithDictionary:(NSDictionary*)dictionary prettyPrinted:(BOOL)prettyPrinted
{
NSJSONWritingOptions options = (prettyPrinted) ? NSJSONWritingPrettyPrinted : 0;
NSData *jsonData = [NSJSONSerialization dataWithJSONObject:dictionary options:options error:nil];
return [[NSString alloc] initWithBytes:[jsonData bytes] length:[jsonData length] encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding];
}
After that you should escape the string too.

How assign value to a JSON string?

I get this JSON object from my web service
0: {
Username: "John"
Password: "12345"
Position: "Admin"
Job: "Developer"
ResourceJobId: 1
}
When I try to assign a value, for example, to Username JSON string, I get a semantic error:
id obj = [NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData:data
options:NSJSONReadingAllowFragments
error:&error];
for (NSDictionary *dictionary in array) {
NSString *usernameString = #"";
//this line of code gives me an error: Expression is not assignable
[dictionary objectForKey:#"Username"] = usernameString ;
I know how get the JSON object with NSJSONSerialization class, but my target is how assign the value #"" to the JSON object.
So how can I assign the value #"" to the Username JSON string?
While you are trying to fetched dictionary from array. it is not mutable dictionary so you need to created NSMutableDictionary while fetching data from Array. following code will help you to change username.
for (NSMutableDictionary *dictionary in array)
{
NSMutableDictionary* dictTemp = [NSMutableDictionary dictionaryWithDictionary:dictionary];
[dictTemp setObject:usernameString forKey#"Username"];
[_arrayList replaceObjectAtIndex:index withObject:dictTemp];
}
Well your assignment operation is written wrong, it should be indeed like this:
If you need to get value from dictionary
usernameString = [dictionary objectForKey:#"Username"];
If you want to set a value to your dictionary, first of all your dictionary should be NSMutableDictionary
[dictionary setObject:usernameString forKey:#"Username"];
NSData *data = [NSData dataWithContentsOfURL:url];
NSError *error;
id obj = [NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData:data
options:NSJSONReadingAllowFragments
error:&error];
if(!error && [obj isKindOfClass:[NSArray class]]){
NSArray *array = (NSArray *)obj;
Booking *booking = nil;
for (NSMutableDictionary *dictionary in array) {
NSString *usernameString = #"";
//this line of code gives me an error: Expression is not assignable
[dictionary objectForKey:#"Username"] = usernameString;
Yes, is a compiler error
You need to have a mutabledictionary inorder to change the value. Try this
for (NSDictionary *dictionary in array) {
NSMutableDictionary *mutableDictionary = [NSMutableDictionary dictionaryWithDictionary:dictionary];
NSString *usernameString = #"";
[mutableDictionary setValue:#"" forKey:usernameString];
}
Even the answers are correct, I want to add that you do not have to do this your own. NSJSONSerialization already has a solution for that. Simply pass as options one of these:
NSJSONReadingMutableContainers = (1UL << 0),
NSJSONReadingMutableLeaves = (1UL << 1),
when reading the JSON.

Parsing of JSON array returning blank array

I have an array which is of below kind.
{"Hotweeks":[{"Image":"http://www.example.com/wp-content/uploads/0970E01L.jpg","Description":"Ocean Shores, WA","PostTitle":"Windjammer Condominiums"},
{"Image":"","Description":"","PostTitle":"0970O01L"},

{"Image":"","Description":"","PostTitle":"0936O05L"},
{"Image":"","Description":"","PostTitle":"0936O04L"},
{"Image":"","Description":"","PostTitle":"0936O03L"},
{"Image":"","Description":"","PostTitle":"0936O02L"},
{"Image":"","Description":"","PostTitle":"0936O01L"},
{"Image":"","Description":"","PostTitle":"0936I01L"},
{"Image":"","Description":"","PostTitle":"0936E03L"},
{"Image":"","Description":"","PostTitle":"0936E02L"},
{"Image":"","Description":"","PostTitle":"0936E01L"}]}
Which I am trying to parse using the below code.
NSArray *array = [NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData:[returnString dataUsingEncoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding] options:NSJSONReadingMutableContainers error:&error];
NSLog(#"Size of array is %ld",[array count]);
NSDictionary *dictionary = [array objectAtIndex:0];
NSString *test = [dictionary objectForKey:#"Image"];
NSLog(#"Value for image is %#",test);
This is returning null in Nslog.
…"Description":"Ocean Shores, WA,"PostTitle":…
is missing a " after Ocean Shores, WA. It should be
…"Description":"Ocean Shores, WA","PostTitle":…
Use a JSON validator to check for this type of thing. There are many to pick from. I use the Chrome apps JSON Lint and JSON Editor.
The top level of your Json file is an object, not an array (it doesn't start with '['). That being said, if you check array's type like this: NSLog("%#", [array class] you'll probably see it's a NSDictionary.
To get the array you can do this:
NSDictionary *jsonDict = [NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData:[returnString dataUsingEncoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding] options:NSJSONReadingMutableContainers error:&error];
NSArray *array = jsonDict[#"Hotweeks"];
NSLog(#"Size of array is %ld",[array count]);
NSDictionary *dictionary = [array objectAtIndex:0];
NSString *test = [dictionary objectForKey:#"Image"];
NSLog(#"Value for image is %#",test);

Cant access serialized JSON data (NSJSONSerialization)

I get this JSON from a web service:
{
"Respons": [{
"status": "101",
"uid": "0"
}]
}
I have tried to access the data with the following:
NSError* error;
//Response is a NSArray declared in header file.
self.response = [NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData:data options:kNilOptions error:&error];
NSString *test = [[self.response objectAtIndex:0] objectForKey:#"status"]; //[__NSCFDictionary objectAtIndex:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance
NSString *test = [[self.response objectForKey:#"status"] objectAtIndex:0]; //(null)
But none of them work, if i NSLog the NSArray holding the serialized data, this i what i get:
{
Respons = (
{
status = 105;
uid = 0;
}
);
}
How do i access the data?
Your JSON represents a dictionary, for whom the value associated with the Respons key is an array. And that array has a single object, itself a dictionary. And that dictionary has two keys, status and uid.
So, for example, if you wanted to extract the status, I believe you need:
NSArray *array = [self.response objectForKey:#"Respons"];
NSDictionary *dictionary = [array objectAtIndex:0];
NSString *status = [dictionary objectForKey:#"status"];
Or, in latest versions of the compiler:
NSArray *array = self.response[#"Respons"];
NSDictionary *dictionary = array[0];
NSString *status = dictionary[#"status"];
Or, more concisely:
NSString *status = self.response[#"Respons"][0][#"status"];
Your top level object isn't an array, it's a dictionary. You can easily bypass this and add the contents of that key to your array.
self.response = [[NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData:data options:kNilOptions error:&error] objectForKey:#"Respons"];
