Reset property within lazy getter / after each access - ios

I feel like there is a more regulation way to do what I am doing in, either by some iOS specific thing, or pattern I'm aware of. I'm trying to create an NSMutableArray variable, that essentially acts as temporary storage for a logger class. Each time the array is accessed, I want to either lazily instantiate it, or set it to nil. The way I am thinking of doing it seems a little hacky and I'm looking for some input?

The effect I'm hoping to achieve is using a logger that is logging details about network requests - http codes, URLs, repsonse times, etc. I want the logger to amalgamate all this output in this storage array. Later on, when I'm hitting an API, I want to take the contents of this array, and send it up to the API, and I also want the array to reset (so the array is essentially a log of network request data since the last time the app hits the API, versus a log of what has happened since the app launched.
I realise that I could do this manually by niling the array when I access it, but I'm trying to do this in a more of a plug and play way, where it you don't need to worry if someone forgets to nil the array etc

The effect that you are trying to achieve is perfectly legitimate, but you shouldn't try to achieve it with a getter alone: the very fact that a simple getter could reset something back to nil would be counter-intuitive to your readers.
Instead, you should make two methods - one to prepare the array, and another one to harvest it, and replace with a fresh nil:

Now the sequence of operations becomes intuitively clear: you get myArray as many times as you wish, add as many items as you need, and then when you are done call resetArray. This would get you a complete array with all the data, and reset the object to be ready for the next call:

What you're doing doesn't make any sense to me.
Creating it empty if it doesn't exist makes sense.
Setting it to nil if it does exist does not make sense.
The usual pattern for lazy loading is to use a property with a getter:
#property (nonatomic, retain) NSMutableArray * myArray;
and then the implementation:
//Custom getter
-(NSMutableArray*) myArray;
{
if (!_myArray)
_myArray = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init];
return _myArray;
}
Then you ALWAYS refer to the array using the getter. If it hasn't yet been created, the getter creates and returns the empty array. If it does exist, it returns the existing one.

NSMutableArray global

I am trying to use the equivalent of an ArrayList in Objective-C. I understood that I have to use a NSMutableArray. I want to have a list of strings (NSString). The point is that my list should be accessible from any method in my class. The aim is to have a instance variable as in java. My problem is that when I try to add object in the list my app crashes (I don't have an error to show since I use codename one).
My testNativeImpl.h contains :

And in my testNativeImpl.m :

I try in different methods to add a string like this :

[mNewStreamsId addObject:sId];
sId is a valid string since when I print it it is okay.
But the addObject crashes the app.
How should I do?

There are a few things that can go wrong, one of the harder parts is that we can't use ARC as it collides with the GC. So make sure you retain the object:

mNewStreamsId = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init];
[mNewStreamsId retain];
return self;
}
You would need to free it in dealloc but from the sound of it you are keeping it for the duration of the app so it should work fine without releasing as long as you keep a reference to the native interface from the Java side.
I would also suggest logging to make sure the init code is invoked correctly and the mutable array was allocated. If you have access to xcode then running this within xcode might prove useful as the crash within the IDE provides additional details.

Check if NSMutableArray has a specific Object

I am trying to check if the NSMutableArray has a specific object, before adding the object to it, if exists then don't add.
i looked over many posts explaining how to do this, managed to implement it like this, but it always gives me that the object "doesn't exist", though i already added it !

I can display all object from the NSMutableArray into a table, what i need to do in the above code is stop the addition of duplicate objects.
The first method listed on the NSArray documentation under the section "querying an array" is containsObject:. If it's not working, that suggests that your implementation of isEqual: is not correct. Make sure you follow the note in the documentation:
If two objects are equal, they must have the same hash value. This
last point is particularly important if you define isEqual: in a
subclass and intend to put instances of that subclass into a
collection. Make sure you also define hash in your subclass.
You might also consider using an NSSet since you can't add duplicates to that. Of course, this would also require a working version of isEqual:.
Sets are composed of unique elements, so this serves as a convenient way to remove all duplicates in an array.

How reference count work? [duplicate]

Here is code I am referring to.

Now, I know there is no memory-management going on in this sample code. What would be required?
In the getPeople loop, I am alloc'ing a Person (retainCount 1), then adding it to array. The retain count is now 2, right? If it is two, should I be [p release]'ing after adding it to the array, bringing the retainCount back down to 1?
Am I right in that it is the caller's responsibility to release the array returned by the method? (Which would also free the memory of the Person's, and their instance variables, assuming their counts are at 1).
I have read Apple's memory management document, but I guess what I am most unclear about, is what increases an objects retain count? I think I grasp the idea of who's responsibility it is to release, though. This is the fundamental rule, according to Apple:
You take ownership of an object if you create it using a method whose name begins with “alloc” or “new” or contains “copy” (for example, alloc, newObject, or mutableCopy), or if you send it a retain message. You are responsible for relinquishing ownership of objects you own using release or autorelease. Any other time you receive an object, you must not release it.
bobDevil's sentence "only worry about the retain counts you add to the item explicitly" made it click for me. After reading the Ownership policy at Apple, essentially, the object/method that created the new object, is the one responsible for releasing /it's/ interest in it. Is this correct?
Now, let's say I a method, that receives an object, and assigns it to a instance variable. I need to retain the received object correct, as I still have an interest in it?

You are correct that the retain count is 2 after adding it to an array. However, you should only worry about the retain counts you add to the item explicitly.
Retaining an object is a contract that says "I'm not done with you, don't go away." A basic rule of thumb (there are exceptions, but they are usually documented) is that you own the object when you alloc an object, or create a copy. This means you're given the object with a retain count of 1(not autoreleased). In those two cases, you should release it when you are done. Additionally, if you ever explicitly retain an object, you must release it.
So, to be specific to your example, when you create the Person, you have one retain count on it. You add it to an array (which does whatever with it, you don't care) and then you're done with the Person, so you release it:
Person *p = [[Person alloc] init]; //retain 1, for you
[array addObject:p]; //array deals with p however it wants
[p release]; //you're done, so release it
Also, as I said above, you only own the object during alloc or copy generally, so to be consistent with that on the other side of things, you should return the array autoreleased, so that the caller of the getPeople method does not own it.

Correct, if you create it, you must release it. If you invest interest in it (through retain) you must release it.
Retain counts are increased when you call alloc specifically, so you'll need to release that explicitly.
factory methods usually give you an autoreleased object (such as [NSMutableArray array] -- you would have to specifically retain this to keep it around for any length of time.).
As far as NSArray and NSMutableArray addObject:, someone else will have to comment. I believe that you treat a classes as black boxes in terms of how they handle their own memory management as a design pattern, so you would never explicitly release something that you have passed into NSArray. When it gets destroyed, its supposed to handle decrementing the retain count itself.
You can also get a somewhat implicit retain if you declare your ivars as properties like #property (retain) suchAndSuchIvar, and use #synthesize in your implementation. Synthesize basically creates setters and getters for you, and if you call out (retain) specifically, the setter is going to retain the object passed in to it. Its not always immediately obvious, because the setters can be structured like this:

fart.firstName = #"Josh"; // this is actually a setter, not accessing the ivar
// equivalent to [fart setFirstName: #"Josh"], such that

You should generally /not/ be worried about the retain count. That's internally implemented. You should only care about whether you want to "own" an object by retaining it. In the code above, the array should own the object, not you (outside of the loop you don't even have reference to it except through the array). Because you own [[Person alloc] init], you then have to release it.
Thus
Person *p = [[Person alloc] init];
[array addObject:p];
[p release];
Also, the caller of "getPeople" should not own the array. This is the convention. You should autorelease it first.
NSMutableArray *array = [[[NSMutableArray alloc] init] autorelease];

NSMutableArray Allocate then replaceObjectAtIndex

I have a NSMutableArray that i define in the header file as:
#property (strong, nonatomic) NSMutableArray *tempPhotosArray;
Then i allocate as:
_tempPhotosArray = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init];
What i'd like to know is if i then go to replaceObjectAtIndex the program will complain on an out of bounds. I want to keep only a set number of items in that array, so is it possible to do a insert or replace? i.e. if at index 0 it is empty do an insert, if there is an object already replace it?

As to why you are getting an error, what everyone else wrote is accurate, but....
The description of what you want doesn't match what an NSArray is. It sounds like you want a list of up to 5 items and never more than 5. It might be that if you try to add a 6th item the "oldest" goes away. Like a "recently opened" file history. You can make this type of functionality with an NSArray, but that's not what it is out of the box.
I would suggest making your own object class. I'm not going to write all the code for you, because this sounds suspiciously like programming homework, but I will point you in the correct direction.

What you want to do with the data and writing something to get it from your new object is up to you, because I'm not sure how you want to do it.
There are no objects in the array when you initially created it, so there is nothing to replace.

Obj - C: Having trouble creating a UITableView that updates cells from an HTTP API in real-time (one at a time)

I am polling an HTTP API - it returns one item at a time, in real-time (about every 4 seconds). As each item is received, I would like a new UITableView cell to be populated. The full list of received items must remain in a class property, I'm guessing an NSMutableArray. What is the best way to initialize an NSMutableArray as a class property, update it as new information comes in, and then use the count to update a new UITableViewCell?
Here's how I'm adding content to an NSMutableDictionary:

[messageContents retain];
[messageContents setValue:messageText forKey:#"text"];
[messageContents setValue:image forKey:#"image"];
[self addMessageToDataArray:messageContents];
Here's the method stuffing objects into the array:

[self.messageDataArray addObject:messageDictionary];
NSLog(#"count = %#", [self.messageDataArray count]);
[self reloadTableData];
}
At this point, calling count on the messageDataArray class property crashes the application. I'm very used to working with arrays in Actionscript, Obj-C is obviously totally different. Please explain the method for instantiating an NSMutableArray as a class property, filling it with NSMutableDictionary's and then finding the NSMutableArray count (which will be dynamically updating in real-time) so I can use that info to update a UITableView (on the fly).
Or... tell me I'm being silly and suggest a much easier solution.
From your description I would guess you're not allocating the messageDataArray before using it.
The init function for your table view (controller?) class should have a line like this
messageDataArray = [[NSMutableArray alloc] initWithCapacity:20];
It's also worth checking that you have [messageDataArray release]; in your dealloc method.
