Rails: Two different many to many relationships between two models - ruby-on-rails

I have two tables named books (id, name, author_name) and users (id, name, location). A book can either be viewed by a user or edited by a user. So, for these two relationships I have two join tables viz. book_editor_users (book_id, user_id) and book_viewer_users (book_id, user_id).
How do I model this in Rails such that I can retrieve editor users and viewer users like this:
Book.find(1).book_editor_users
Book.find(1).book_viewer_users
My attempt for the book and user model are:

There is another work around that I thought of, but I am not sure whether it is the Rails way. That work around is to have a single join table book_users (book_id, user_id, type) where the type column can capture whether it is an editor relationship or a viewer relationship.

Single joining table(books_users) is the best way for doing this with permission column in it. Lets say integer column with 1 for view 2 for edit(3 for both if it could be a possibilty). And to get editor or viewer users you should write scope in their joining model(BooksUsers)
scope :viewers, -> { where(permission: 1) }
scope :editors, -> { where(permission: 2) }
now you can find books particular user from these scope
Book.find(1).books_users.viewers
Book.find(1).books_users.editors

Rails ActiveRecord equivalent of Laravel ORM `attach()` method for polymorphic has_many :through

I'm transitioning from "Laravel ORM" to "Rails Active Record" and I couldn't find how do you do something like this:
$this->people()->attach($person['id'], ['role' => $role]);
Explanation for Laravel code snippet
People is a polymorphic association to the class that is being accessed via $this via the Role class. The function above, creates a record in the middle table (roles/peopleables) like this:

How the association is defined on the Laravel end:

Here is how I made the association in Ruby:

I have seen the operation << but I don't know if there is any way to set an additional value on the pivot table while triggering this operation. [in this case the roles or peopleables tables; I use these two terms interchangeably in this app.]
PS. So, basically the question is how to define additional values on the pivot table in a polymorphic-many association in ActiveRecord and dynamically set those values while initiating an attachment relationship
Description of Functionality
Our application has a limitless [generally speaking, not that there is no computational limits!] content type: post, novel, poem, etc.
Each of these content types can be associated to individuals who play certain roles: editor, author, translator, etc.
So, for example:
X is the translator of Post#1. X, Y and Z are authors of Post#1.
There is a distinct People model and each content type has its own unique model [for example: Post, Poem, etc].
The idea of :through is referring to the 'Role class' or 'the pivot table' [whichever way you want to understand it] that the polymorphic association is recorded on it.
In addition to the information regarding a simple polymorphic relationship, there is also the kind of role that is recorded on the pivot table.
For example, X is both the author and the translator for Post#1, so there are two rows with the same people_id, peopleable_type and peopleable_id, however they have different values for role.
From what I understand given your description, I think you have this models (I'll change the names to what I understand they are, hope it's clear enough):

class Novel < ApplicationRecord
has_many :person_roles, as: :content

etc...
class PersonRole < ApplicationRecord

So a Person is associated to a "content" (Novel, Poem, etc) via the join model PersonRole with a specific role. A Person that is the author of some novel and the editor of some peom would have two PersonRole records.
So, if you have a person and you want to assign a new role on some content, you can just do:
person.person_roles.create(role: :author, content: some_poem)
or
PersonRole.create(person: person, role: :author, content: some_poem)
or
some_poem.person_roles.create(person: person, role: :author)
You have two things in play here: "belongs_to :content, polymorphic: true" is covers the part of this being a polymorphic association. Then you have the "PersonRole" table that covers the part you know as "pivot table" (join table/model on rails).
Note that :through in rails has other meaning, you may want to get all the poems that a user is an author of, you could then have a "has_many :poems, through: :person_roles" association (that won't actually work, it's more complex than that in this case because you have a polymorphic association, you'll need to configure the association with some extra options like source and scope for this to work, I'm just using it as an example of what we understand as a has many :through association).
Rails is 'convention over configuration'. Models' must be in singular 'Person'.

Order HABTM associations by created_at on the association instead of the object

I have a Match and User model with a has_and_belongs_to_many between them.
How do I retrieve match.users.first and match.users.second based on when the MatchUser association was created, rather than by when the User itself was created?
You don't want to be using has_and_belongs_to_many in the first place. has_and_belongs_to_many relations are headless - there is no join model. The only columns that are ever used on the join table are the two foreign keys. Even if you added a created_at column to the join table there is no way to access it or use it to order the records. And AR won't set the timestamps anyways.
While you can kind of assume that a has_and_belongs_to_many association is ordered in the same order that the records where inserted you can't really order it.
You want to use has_many through: which uses a model to join the two records:
class User < ApplicationRecord
has_many :user_matches
has_many :matches, through: :user_matches
end
class Match < ApplicationRecord
has_many :user_matches
has_many :users, through: :user_matches

class UserMatch < ApplicationRecord
belongs_to :user

You can then order the association by:
match.users.order("user_matches.created_at DESC")
match.users.first
will return the first user by :id.
If you want to it ordered by created_at then you must do something like
user_id = matches_users.where(match_id: match.id).first.user_id
user.find(user_id)

Ruby on Rails 4 - How to get a has_many association for a group of users?

I have the following setup in my database. We have users. Each user has many entries. Users also belong to organizations, through a table called organization_users.

Here's my question: for a given organization, I want to get a list of all the entries for the users in that organization. Is there a nice compact way to accomplish this? I know I can iterate over all users in the organization and get the entries, but I'm not sure if there is a nice rails-y way to do this.
You can do the following assuming you have a foreign key called organization_id in organization_users table as per your Model
Entry.joins(:user => :organization_users).where("organization_users.organization_id = ?", org_id)
Where org_id is the id of the given organization. This will give you all entries of all users in an organization
Try something like that :
my_org = Organization.find(id)
my_org.users.eager_load(:entries)
First you get the organization you want to query. Then via :through association you can directly retrieve all the users for that organization. And last using eager_load, in one query you get all the entries. The result will be an ActiveRecord::Relation.

Double entry table in rails

I would like to create a double entry table form according two models.
For now I'm able to create a simple table with the members of a communities
on the columns, I must add the informations of an other model, like this :

I there some gem existing to make a double entry table or is it easier to make it from scratch? if so, how can I begin ?
It seems like you would benefit from a through relationship here.
Instead of referencing community directly from the skill table, you could do:

belongs_to :user
has_many :communities, :through => :user
On user, add:
has_many :communities, :through => :memberships
Wouldn't this get the link between skill and community that you would like?
As Jay mentioned, you would benefit from a has_many :through relationship, or maybe a has_and_belongs_to_many relationship; whether it's the actual solution we'll have to see:

These work by storing data in single instances, and linking to other data through foreign_keys. These foreign keys are things such as user_id etc:

This means instead of populating the same data twice, it is correct to reference that data from other models, as required. This is where join models come in
Join Model
Join models allow you to "link" two pieces of data through a join model:
For you, it means storing your skills in its own model, and linking users with skills on a join model (I've called skill_user.rb). This means that you'll be able to call your user's skills like this:
#user.skills #-> goes through the join model

rails, model naming question

I'm creating a model called Chats. And I want to assign users to a discussion. They are either a part of the Chats or they aren't...
So I create one model Chats.
What's the standard Rails naming convention for the other table?

While has_and_belongs_to_many is an ok option here, I recommend going with has_many :through instead.
In essence you will have an explicit join model, which you can call something like ChatSession.

has_many :chats, :through => :chat_sessions

Now you will need a table called chat_sessions with columns :user_id, and :chat_id in it. This is your join table.
Advantage
You get a model which is fully under your control, and isn't just a dumb join table managed by rails. So for example, if you want to track number of messages particular user left in particular chat, it could be a column in chat_sessions table. Presence of :through renders habtm unneeded in most cases. There is no complexity overhead either.
If it is a join table, it would be both table names joined by '_' and in alphabetical order of table names:
chats_users
This is called a has_and_belongs_to_many association in rails. You basically have two models that call has_and_belongs_to_many and create a linking table that uses the two models in the name (alphabetical and plural).
models:
