I need to present a UIViewController as fullscreen (Above all other views). This UIViewController is currently inside a UINavigationController.
Is it possible to have the UINavigationController present it's current top UIViewController modally?
From within the UIViewController I would like to fullscreen, if I use:
[self.navigationController presentViewController:self animated:YES completion:nil]
Nothing seems to happen.. Is there a reason this is not allowed?
EDIT
I have posted another question in which I have solved this issue for every scenario. (Code snippet included there)
Is it possible for a UIViewController to present itself?
If you want to present a view controller modally, you should be presenting it from a different view controller. The modal presentation will show the presented view controller over the navigation controller (in fullscreen)
For instance,
UIViewController *firstVC = self;
UIViewController *secondVC = <the VC you want to present>
[firstVC presentViewController:secondVC animated:YES completion:nil]
Or just use a modal segue in Interface Builder.
You should use this :
[self presentViewController:self.navigationController animated:YES completion:nil];
to show a controller.
Assuming that the view controller you want to show modally is the navigation controllers top view controller
[self presentViewController:self.navigationController.topviewcontroller animated:YES completion:nil];
Hope this helps

How can to go back to previous view programmatically without UINavigationController, because all examples that I have found use UINavigationController ?
I am making view for sending feedback and I would like to use this view in many more apps.
If I use UINavigationController than app need to have UINavigationController to use my view for sending feedback.
Is this possible to do and how ?
This is code how I show my view for sending feedback:
- (IBAction)showFeedbackView:(id)sender {
WOC_FeedbackViewController *feedbackView = [[WOC_FeedbackViewController alloc] init];
[self presentViewController:feedbackView animated:YES completion:nil];
}
Use this to go back
[self dismissViewControllerAnimated:YES completion:nil];
Depending on what your project works (Storyboards or XIB) you can use presentViewController. But thats when you keep a reference on your last viewController's identifier.
If you know the ID of your viewController NSString *yourID;
1) Init your viewController
For storyboard
UIViewController *vc = [self.storyboard instantiateViewControllerWithIdentifier:yourID];
For XIB
UIViewController *vc = [UIViewController alloc]initWithNibName:yourID bundle:nil];
2) Presenting your ViewController
[self presentViewController:vc animated:YES completion:nil];
P.S This is a way to do this, but you should use navigationController because you can keep memory of a viewController on stack so when you need to access it again, you can access it faster. In other words, UINavigationController is applied in every iOS Application you see on App Store.
In Swift, you can use following line of code to go back to previous view controller without navigation controller:
self.dismissViewControllerAnimated(true, completion: nil)
I got first ViewController with out navigation controller, I go from it to second ViewController via
if (!self.mapViewController)
{
self.mapViewController = [self.storyboard instantiateViewControllerWithIdentifier:#"MapViewController"];
}
[self presentViewController:self.mapViewController animated:YES completion:nil];
I send some data with prepareForSegue to it, but I need that it also be with navigation controller.
I embed in a navigation controller in storyboard but my code still called second ViewController with out navigation.
I am not a professional with the way of the storyboard, however i believe that instead of presentViewController
you should be using the following function to present a storyboard VC based on segues.
[self performSegueWithIdentifier:#"SegueIdentifierHere" sender:nil];
Make sure that in your storyboard you have incorporated a UINavigationControllerVC as well.
Give an identifier to the navigation controller in storyboard. Instantiate and present that.
UINavigationController *navVC = [self.storyboard
instantiateViewControllerWithIdentifier:#"TheNavVCWhoseRootIsMyMapViewController"];
self.mapViewController = navVC.viewControllers[0]; // your map vc is at the root
[self presentViewController:navVC animated:YES completion:nil];
You are using presentViewController:animated:completion which will indeed display a UIViewController without the UINavigationController the previous UIViewController was embedded in.
Try using the following:
[self.navigationController pushViewController:self.mapViewController animated:YES]
I'm working with SVWebViewController. When I present the view controller here
SVModalWebViewController *webViewController = [[SVModalWebViewController alloc] initWithAddress:address];
webViewController.webDelegate = self;
[self presentViewController:webViewController animated:YES completion:nil];
The view controller slides up from the bottom, as expected. However, when the view controller is dismissed, calling
[self dismissViewControllerAnimated:YES completion:nil];
The view controller simply disappears. No slide animation down. Any thoughts?
EDIT
It turns out a lot of presentation animations aren't displaying correctly in the application. Some pushes on the navigation controller aren't sliding in or sliding out (but some are). They just appear.
[self dismissViewControllerAnimated:YES completion:NULL];
This should be in SVModalWebViewController not SVWebViewController
EDIT: Instead of modally segueing to the SVWebViewController you should push:
SVWebViewController *webViewController = [[SVWebViewController alloc] initWithAddress:#"http://google.com"];
[self.navigationController pushViewController:webViewController animated:YES];
And instead of dismissing you should:
[self.navigationController popViewControllerAnimated:YES];
From SVWebViewController viewWillAppear::
SVWebViewController needs to be contained in a
UINavigationController. If you are presenting SVWebViewController
modally, use SVModalWebViewController instead.
Is your main view controller contained in a navigation controller? If not, this could possibly cause the other animation issues you're facing.
The dismissal should be from the displayed modalViewController.
It happens to me when the destination view controller loads a big picture or background
I'm trying to get working a simple operation. At least it seems simple. Ok, what I'd like to do is to push a view (with push view controller) from a view that has been pushed with modal view controller.
View1 --(push using modal view controller)-->View2--(push using push view controller)--View3.
Rigth now, i'm doing tests so i'm using a button to start the action. Here's the code I use to push from View2 to view 3:
//view2.h
UIToolbar *bar;
UIBarButtonItem *button;
UIToolbar *toolbar;
}
- (IBAction)demissModal:(id)sender;
- (IBAction)goView3:(id)sender;
#end
//view2.m
- (IBAction)goView3:(id)sender{
View3 *view_3 = [[View3 alloc] initWithNibName:#"View3" bundle:nil];
[self.navigationController pushViewController:view_3 animated:YES];
}
This is the same code I use to push View1 to View2, and it works. But when pushing View2 to View3, it's not working. Any idea of why happens that? Thanks!
View Controllers aren't actually 'modal' or 'push' view controllers. Modal or Push describe a transition between view controllers (called segues if you're using storyboards).
What I think you're asking is how to modally present a view controller, and then push another controller. The trick is when you modally present view controller #1, to actually present a navigation controller with its root view controller set as view controller #1.
MyViewController *myViewController = [MyViewController alloc] init];
UINavigationController *navController = [UINavigationController alloc] initWithRootViewController:myViewController];
// Presuming a view controller is asking for the modal transition in the first place.
[self presentViewController:navController animated:YES completion:nil];
// Now in myViewController, call [self.navigationController pushViewController:secondViewController animated:YES];
This is what it looks like using storyboards:
First of all, I'm not sure where that gegant_se is coming from.
Second of all, if you're pushing view2 from view1 the same way you're pushing view3 from view2, you're not using a modal.
Whenever you use a navigation controller to push a view controller, that view controller that was just pushed has a reference to the navigation controller, through the navigationController property. Try this:
[self.navigationController pushViewController:view_3 animated:YES];
Try this:
[self.navigationController pushViewController:view_3 animated:YES];
try this code AlarmList is view name .
AlarmListScreen *loscr=[[AlarmListScreen alloc]initWithNibName:nil bundle:nil];
[self.navigationController pushViewController:loscr animated:YES];
[loscr release];
Im trying to load a modal view from a view controller that is displayed in a popover. The modal view loads but the problem is that it transitions into the main view and not within the popover. Is it something Im missing? I thought simply initiating it from a vc within a popover would present the modal view within the same popover...
The code is nothing special as bellow:
- (IBAction)myButton{
ModalVC *controller = [[ModalVC alloc] initWithNibName:#"ModalVC" bundle:nil];
[self presentModalViewController:controller animated:YES];
[controller release]; }
If you add
controller.modalPresentationStyle = UIModalPresentationCurrentContext;
before the call to presentModalViewController:animated your ModalVC should be displayed within the popover.
Another way to display something modally in a popover is to use the property modalInPopover.
Unfortunately, it seems you cannot to this and it violates the HIG. From Apple's View Controller Programming Guide
Note: You should always dismiss the visible popover before displaying
another view controller modally. For specific guidelines on when and
how to use popovers in your application, see “Popover (iPad Only)” in
iOS Human Interface Guidelines.
It's because you presentModalViewController to self. Try to add a UIBarButtonItem in your ViewController (self) and do:
[controller presentPopoverFromBarButtonItem:sender permittedArrowDirections:UIPopoverArrowDirectionAny animated:YES];
where sender is the UIBarButtonItem
