drop down list for using mvc 5 - asp.net-mvc

I was looking for a dropdownlistforcexample and found this is what I need There is no ViewData item of type 'IEnumerable<SelectListItem>' that has the key 'CategoryID'
but I can't understand the "-- Select --" in the view page, if it means the select statement, well it's already mentioned in the controller, do I have to mention it again?

Its the option label. The label that is shown when the page got rendered and no option is selected.

How to handle default dropdown values using jquery ajax in mvc3?

Based on selection of first dropdown i am binding another drop down values based on first dropdownid value.My question is i given default first dropdown value as "select" but there is no id value for that in second dropdown to get the values.if user selectes "select" in frist dropdown i need to load all values in second dropdown.please tell me how to acheive this?
If you given default first dropdown value as "select" means, at that time disable the second drop down value. If 'country' value equal to 'select' means, at that time disable the 'state drop down'.When we click that country 'select' at that time also call that disable drop down function.
For example HTML view page, country drop down displayed. From that you will get country ID.
$countryID=> From your MVC code you have pass default country ID (default ID)
$countrySelected=$this->getCountryFromName(trim($countryID']));
if ($countrySelected!= ''){
$sVal=$this->getStateList($countrySelected);
$newStateList=array('0'=>'State');
$newStateList+=$this->formatDropdownArray($sVal,'STATE_ID','NAME');
$stateSelected='State';
echo CHtml::dropDownList('STATE_IDD',$stateSelected,$newStateList,array('tabindex'=>9));
}else{
$stateSelected=$defaultState;
echo CHtml::dropDownList('STATE_IDD',$stateSelected,$stateList,array('tabindex'=>9));
}

Kendo-UI DropDownListFor - selected index

I need to change standard dropdown list to the one from kendo and and I've got a problem with getting appropriate selected value.
This code gives me a dropdown list with correct values, but doesn't give selected value (first one is selected).
#(Html.Kendo().DropDownListFor(m => m.CountryName)
.BindTo(Model.AllCountries)
.OptionLabel("-- Select country --")
)
Inside span (generated by kendo) with this dropdown I found input (type = text) with all values as options, and this input has correct value.
How to display this value in my kendo dropdown?
Thanks
Have you tried setting the name of the DropDownList equal to the name of the property in your model? The Kendo Documentation suggests that "if widget's name is different than the Model's property then the ModelBinder will not be able to update the model."

Problem With Struts Select Default Value

I am using a LinkedList of a very simple custom class I created to fill the select statement. I got everything set properly (values and keys), but I can not load my default value.
This is the code I used for my select statement:
<s:select name="reports" list="filters" listKey="id" listValue="name" value="%{filterName}" onchange="filterResults(this.options[this.selectedIndex].text,this.options[this.selectedIndex].value)"/>
The filters list that is used has an id field (Integer) and a name field (String).
I know that the value in filterName should match with a value in the drop down list. I printed it to the screen with a property tag, but nothing is selected when the page loads. Any help is much obliged.

MVC - DropDownList wrong option selected when value from model is null

I have two DropDownLists in form, both displaying list of regions. First is required, second not, stored as null in db.
When I open the page for edit and first dropdownlist is ie. Region 2, and the second is null, the first option "< not specified >" should be selected in second dropdownlist, but the same option as in first dropdownlist is selected.
When I check for null in controller and set the property to value, which is not in the dropdownlist, ie. -1, it selects corrects first option "< not specified >".
Is there a way to recieve the first option selected, when the model value for this dropdown is null ?

How to get the selected value of a dropdown in the MVC View itself

I have a drop down in a MVC View, which is some thing like this:
Html.DropDownList(id, Range(0,10)
.Select(x => new SelectListItem {Text = x, Value = x}))
In the view itself, I need the selected value of this drop down. I know that I can access that in a JavaScript, but I am looking for a way to get it in the view itself from the drop down properties or something like that.
How can I access it? I tried to figure out some thing from intellisense but nothing relavant showed up, help is much appreciated.
Edit: I want the value after a few lines after the declaration of the drop down, I know that I can access it from JavaScript and by posting the form, Is there noway to access it on the view itself ?
Edit2: If its not possible to access it in view, please explain the reason, I am more interested in knowing it.
Thanks.
After reading at your question, it sounds like you want to have the drop down list supply a value for a lower section of the same page.
First and foremost, you will need to place the DropDownList within a form construct, as in:
<% using (Html.BeginForm("ProcessValue", "ThisPage")) { %>
<%= Html.DropDownList("DropID", Range(0, 10).Select(a=>new SelectListItem { Text = x, Value = x }) %>
<input type=submit value="Submit" />
<% } %>
You need to set up a few things ahead of time:
You have to have a submit button, or a similar construct, in order to retrieve the value of the DropID variable.
You need to set up an controller method that will handle the processing of the value, then redirect back to the original page with the selected value in the page's ViewData.
Finally, you need to set up the view so that the post-processing section will only display if you have a valid value in the DropID variable.
It's not as simple as just placing a DropDownList in a view and then using that value later on in the page. You have to get the controller involved to manage the data transport and you have to set up the single view to handle multiple states (ie. before the value is selected and after the selection takes place).
To get the selected value you could use either javascript or a controller action to which the form containing the select box is submitted.
The selected value will be in the FormCollection or QueryString collection with the name of the DropDown's ID in the controller action that receives the form submission from this view. You can either submit the values with a classic POST or GET or via AJAX, but you have to wire up a server-side action that processes that input.
There is a SelectList class as well wich allows you to define wich item will be selected.. and knowing that - you will know selected value..
Also.. if no value is selected explicitly, dropdowns tend to select the first item in the list.
