I need to notify the user about new features of my app as soon as the app update finishes and the app is not in the foreground (i.e., it is terminated or is in the background). How do I achieve this? This scenario will happen if the app was already installed and auto-updates were on.
I achieved this on Android using MY_PACKAGE_REPLACED broadcast receiver. I've read about NSNotificationName in NSNotificationCenter in iOS but couldn't find an equivalent to MY_PACKAGE_REPLACED.
You cannot do this with iOS without the app running in the background Period. Even if your app is running in the background after Appstore updates the app, your app gets killed and you don't have control over it until the user launches it for the first time.
Maybe you could try sending a silent push notification to the app to see if it responds and try to get the current app version.
I have a Timer which plays AVAudio at a specific time while the screen is locked (app in foreground when locked and plist setting 'Application does not run in background' set to YES).
When I run my code while my iPhone is connected to Xcode it works as desired, playing audio while locked even when the iPhone has been locked for hours.
Now if I disconnect my iPhone and just open the app by tapping the icon the audio won't be played if it's set for more than a minute.
Is there a difference that causes this problem? If I would publish my App to the AppStore which behaviour would my users get?
That 'Application does not run in background' flag is a very old flag that means your app does not support multitasking and should be terminated when the user presses the home button. There's no good reason I can think of to set that flag on a newly developed application. Unless you understand exactly what it's for and are positive that setting it to yes is the correct thing to do, don't do that.
(That flag was added when iOS 4 was released, to allow apps that could not handle multi-tasking to request the old terminate-on-home-button behavior from iOS 3. Given that we're now 6 major iOS releases from iOS 4, it seems outdated.)
So remove that flag. It probably doesn't have any impact on your question, but remove it or set it to no in any case.
If you want to run a timer while the phone is locked and play sounds at designated times then you will probably need to set your app up as a background sound player, and ask for more background time when you get a message that you are going to the background.
That being said it's likely that Apple will reject your app. Running a timer from the background means that the processor on the phone has to run at full speed all the time, which will DRAMATICALLY reduce battery life.
Apple only allows a very small subset of apps to run in the background, and then only under specific circumstances (like a background sound playing app when the user is actively listening to music, or a navigation app that is actively tracking the user's location and notifying them when it's time to make a turn to follow directions.)
Should be no different. If you'd like to feel what do your users' feel then you can publish it to TestFlight which is the best app beta test environment. Find some testers or try it yourself.
The directions should be to verify the playing logic and the sound file relationship which link to the connection.
I am working on a VOIP app and need it to auto-start when the iPhone starts up. Everything works 80% of the time. But 20% of the time the app fails to startup. One test scenario is the following:
Open app and type something and save
Reboot phone
Check if app is running by double-tapping the home button but DO NOT open the app.
If app is running, reboot phone again and see if the app comes up again in the background process.
This scenarios works most of the time but not always. Other scenarios also fail at times. Can someone clarify if there is a fool-proof way to start a VOIP iOS app every time the phone boots up?

No, it can't be done. If a user force quits an app, it stays force quit. That's how apple want it, and that's how it's going to be. You can't circumvent the users wishes with multitasking. Also, it's worth knowing that what you see in the fast switcher is not necessarily everything that is running, it's what ios thinks the user should expect to be running ie it may shut something down in the background of its own accord in order to free up resources, but because the user did not initiate it this app will appear to still be open in the switcher, despite that it is not.
Sorry, you can't open an app on startup. You should include a reminder on the app's first start up for the user to keep that app open in the background.
I am triggering a background fetch by using the content-available flag on a push notification. I have the fetch and remote-notification UIBackgroundModes enabled.
Here is the implementation I am using in my AppDelegate.m:

When the app is running in the background, it works fine. (The notification is received and the app triggered the "looks like i got a notification" local notification, as the code above should do).
However, when the app is not running and a push notification is received with the content-available flag, the app is not launched and the didRecieveRemoteNotification delegate method is never called.

Will iOS perform background tasks after the user has force-quit the app?

You can achieve this using the new PushKit framework, introduced in iOS 8. Though PushKit is used for VoIP. So your usage should be for VoIP related otherwise there is risk of app rejection. (See this answer).

Unlike the application:didReceiveRemoteNotification: method, which is
called only when your app is running in the foreground, the system
calls this method when your app is running in the foreground or
background. In addition, if you enabled the remote notifications
background mode, the system launches your app (or wakes it from the
suspended state) and puts it in the background state when a push
notification arrives. However, the system does not automatically
launch your app if the user has force-quit it. In that situation, the
user must relaunch your app or restart the device before the system
attempts to launch your app automatically again.

Also keep in mind that if you kill your app from the app switcher
(i.e. swiping up to kill the app) then the OS will never relaunch the
app regardless of push notification or background fetch. In this case
the user has to manually relaunch the app once and then from that

That post was by an Apple employee so I think i can trust that this information is correct.
So it looks like when the app is killed from the app switcher (by swiping up), the app will never be launched, even for scheduled background fetches.
You can change your target's launch settings in "Manage Scheme" to Wait for <app>.app to be launched manually, which allows you debug by setting a breakpoint in application: didReceiveRemoteNotification: fetchCompletionHandler: and sending the push notification to trigger the background launch.
I'm not sure it'll solve the issue, but it may assist you with debugging for now.
The answer is YES, but shouldn't use 'Background Fetch' or 'Remote notification'. PushKit is the answer you desire.
In summary, PushKit, the new framework in ios 8, is the new push notification mechanism which can silently launch your app into the background with no visual alert prompt even your app was killed by swiping out from app switcher, amazingly you even cannot see it from app switcher.

I've been trying different variants of this for days, and I thought for a day I had it re-launching the app in the background, even when the user swiped to kill, but no I can't replicate that behavior.
It's unfortunate that the behavior is quite different than before. On iOS 6, if you killed the app from the jiggling icons, it would still get re-awoken on SLC triggers. Now, if you kill by swiping, that doesn't happen.
It's a different behavior, and the user, who would continue to get useful information from our app if they had killed it on iOS 6, now will not.
We need to nudge our users to re-open the app now if they have swiped to kill it and are still expecting some of the notification behavior that we used to give them. I'm worried this won't be obvious to users when they swipe an app away. They may, after all, be basically cleaning up or wanting to rearrange the apps that are shown minimized.

I found this line in the iOS App Programming Guide:
Including the voip value in the UIBackgroundModes key lets the system
know that it should allow the app to run in the background as needed
to manage its network sockets. An app with this key is also relaunched
in the background immediately after system boot to ensure that the
VoIP services are always available.
And I find this statement to be true in general. However, if the user force closed the application before rebooting their device, my experience has been that the app is not automatically relaunched on device boot. Can I get some clarification on the expected behavior in this particular case?

It's generally true that apps that the user 'quits' using the
multitasking UI are not automatically launched again. The system
takes that as a hint from the user that it should not relaunch the
app. If the user wants the app to be automatically launched in
future, they must manually launch it at least once.
For VoIP apps this has been the case since VoIP support was introduced. For other
types of automatically launched apps the implementation of this
heuristic has been less consistent, although I believe that with iOS 7
it's now applied across the board.
