I put my ios deployment target as 7.1 and when i uploaded my game to itunes connect, it said i need 3.5 screenshots and I only have an iphone 5 so I have to use the simulator but when I tried to change the scheme it doesn't show up the simulator options. Why does this happen? Thanks
Delete Derived Data and restart Xcode.
1) Open Terminal
2) rm -rf ~/Library/Developer/Xcode/DerivedData
3) Restart Xcode
You have to add screenshot for 3.5" because ios7.1 is also for iphone4s which have 3.5" screen.
You can find simulator at,
open simulator -> Hardware Menu -> Device -> Manage Device
In Manage device you can add simulator by clicking on '+' button which is at bottom left corner of the screen.
If you don't find the simulator here then you have to download from
xcode->preferences->downloads options
I think you are missing one little thing:
To choose your building/running destiny.
When your real iOS Device is selected it looks like:
1 - Click on your iOS Device Name to select which device you want to simulate (iPhone 4S - 3,5 inch)
2 - Build/Run your project and your app will appear on the simulator you choosed.

I've been making a ton of new projects as I'm learning Swift. My development is all on my laptop, so I hate using the default 6s Plus simulator, since the window is too big to easily see. Is there a way to change the default simulator to be a different one for new projects?
No need to delete simulators!
Product → Destination → Add Additional Simulators...
In the sidebar, select the simulator you want to hide
Uncheck "Show as run destination"
Edit: Updated for Xcode 10
You can select the desired simulator via the Hardware > Device > [OS] menu (Xcode 9):
While unchecking "Show as run destination" hides the simulator, this will also change the default value.
Updated image for Xcode 11.5
Xcode 9 UPDATE:
In Xcode 9, no need to delete simulators, and the way to turn them on/off is to go in Product/Destination/Add Additional Simulators... select the simulator you want to turn off, then uncheck the box: 'Show as run destination'
No. But...
If you don't like the size of the 6s plus simulator, make it smaller with the simulator Window Scale menu.
If you don't like the 6s plus simulator at all, delete it with the Xcode Window Devices menu.
Xcode 12.5
In Xcode, go to Product -> Destination -> Choose Destination menu and selecting the device you'd like to be your default.
The original answer could be found in apple support forum here: Apple support forum,
In addition if you want to make the device smaller just hover over bottom right corner of the simulator and you will see the resize option
Deleting the simulators you don't want will default you to the simulator you do want. I also develop on my laptop and the biggest simulator I can see w/o scaling down is the 4S, so I deleted simulators for iPhone 5 and above and now every project I create defaults to 4S simulator. If I ever need the newer simulators, I will just re-download.
In my case, just select the device in Product → Destination, Xcode 12.4
Xcode version 11.5
On Simulator > File > Open Device > iOS 13.5 > Change the default Simulator
Xcode(v11.5)
open your simulator, choose **File/Open Device/iOS 13.5/iPhone8 ** will change your simulator device to iPhone 8.
When you reopen your simulator, iPhone 8 will be your device simulator.
Before I updated from xcode 6 to 7, it was just right next to the run and stop button.
When i just click on the run button, it opens the iphone 5 simulator and from the simulator's menu, if i choose Hardware > device > iphone 6 plus, it's just completely black. If I try to run the app again, it just says that it's running on iphone 5 in Xcode.
How do I choose a different simulator?? or run on a physical device connected to the macbook?
This worked seamlessly on xcode6 with the use of the device dropdown menu beside the run and stop button. but now, that menu is gone.
Another question: I am unable to find ios9 simulator under preferences > downloads
In one of the pre-versions of Xcode 7 I had the same issue. The problem was, that there were no simulators installed.
Go to Xcode -> Window -> Devices a window will pop up. Click on the plus button in the bottom left corner and configure some devices.
The device selector should show up in Xcode.
Turns out Xcode did not finish downloading. There was an error when I checked the update. I made it complete the download and xcode is okay again
I've somehow collected a long list of iPhone simulators in Xcode:
I'd like to clear this, and restore a simulator for each device model and each installed simulator version, i.e.:
iPhone 4S (iOS 8.3)
iPhone 4S (iOS 8.4)
iPhone 4S (iOS 9.0)
iPhone 5 (iOS 8.3)
iPhone 5 (iOS 8.4)
iPhone 5 (iOS 9.0)
...etc.
How can I do this in an automatic manner? I don't care about losing any data on current simulators.
This question is distinct from the reported duplicate, because it requires that the simulators be recreated, as a clean install of Xcode does. The other question's answers merely delete the simulators.
It also requires that the deletion and creation be automated, i.e. "click the delete button a bunch of times, then click the add button a bunch of times" is not the answer.
Open up a simulator, then in menu bar go to Hardware -> Device -> Manage Devices. You can delete and add new simulator there.
In Xcode, Menu: Window:Devices
or
In the Simulator, Then Menu Hardware:Device:Manage Devices...
Delete (and add) simulators as you need.
To delete click on a simulator, press the delete key, click the OK in the dialog.
To add simulators by clicking the + at the lower left corner of the window and select the attributes you need.
I was having an issue with Core Location in my app so I followed this advice (the selected answer) and reset my network and location settings on my device. Now that I've done that, my device isn't showing up as an option to build and run the app in the top left corner of Xcode. It just says "iPhone" when it should say "Aaron's iPhone 4S" which is what I named the device I'm testing on. What happened and how do I add it back in?
I am using Xcode 6.3.2 and an iPhone 4S with 8.3
Here is a screenshot of the Devices window:
It just says "iPhone" because name of your iPhone is "iPhone". So your iPhone is in list of devices, I think you can build and run the application as normal. Check setting of your iPhone to make sure the name of device.
When I develop my project in Xcode 5.0.2 and "Build and Run" it, it launches the iPad simulator always when I selected iPhone Simulator ? What is going on? How do I get it to run the iPhone simulator?
Follow the image sequence and watch the result..
Set the launch target
check the launched simulator details...
These step May Help you for resolving this issue.
First Make Sure Are you sure it is iPad Simulator or the Retina iPhone Simulator ?. If want to confirm please make sure with this line.
For iPhone (3.5 -inch) Simulator:
For iPhone (4.0 -inch) Simulator:
For iPad Simulator:
Make sure your project's Build Settings has iPhone/iPad selected for the Targeted Device Family setting under the Deployment section. (As if you try to run iPad project on iPhone will show you this Error - > The run destination iPhone Retina (4-inch) is not valid for Running the scheme 'Test'.)
if None work for you then please try to Quit both Xcode and Simulator. or you may need to reinstall you Developer Tools Again.
