I have a rails application with devise, and I added to users a profile image, and a description. What I want to do is to create a page (DIFFERENT of the default registration/edit) where the users, after logged in, can set only this two atributes(image and description).
<%= form_for(:user, html: { method: :put, :multipart => true })) do |f| %>
<div class="form-group">
<%= f.label :Profile_Image %>
<%= f.file_field :image, class: "form-control" %>
</div>
<div class="form-group">
<%= f.label :Descrição %>
<%= f.text_area :description, class: "form-control", rows: "10" %>
</div>
<% end %>
I have already tried two different controllers and none of them worked:
def edit
end
def edit
#user = User.find(params[:id])
end
My config -> routes are:
get "edit" => "pages#edit"
post "edit" => "pages#edit"
But when i click submit it does nothing! I am new at rails and I am trying to figure this out for hours... How can I create a page to update only the image and the description? Thanks
You need an update method in your controller. Your edit method allows the form to render, but you need something like this:
def update
current_user.update(user_params)
end
Then you would have another method in your controller called user_params, which would look something like this. I was taught to put it under a private heading.
private
def user_params
params.require(:user).permit(:profile_image, :description)
end
I believe there is a shortcut way of including your params with your update method, but this will do.
Use registration controller devise and you should customize it.
You should have one method with the same name in one controller, you have two edit method. Change one edit method to update method ( reference : Allow users to edit their account )
pages_controller.rb
class PagesController < Devise::RegistrationsController
def edit
#user = current_user
end
def update
#user = current_user
successfully_updated = if needs_password?(#user, params)
#user.update_with_password(devise_parameter_sanitizer.for(:account_update))
else
params[:user].delete(:current_password)
#user.update_with_password(devise_parameter_sanitizer.for(:account_update))
end
if successfully_updated
set_flash_message :notice, :updated
# Sign in the user bypassing validation in case his password changed
sign_in #user, :bypass => true
redirect_to after_update_path_for(#user)
else
render "edit"
end
end
private
def needs_password?(user, params)
user.email != params[:user][:email] || params[:user][:password].present?
end
end
application_controller.rb
class ApplicationController < ActionController::Base
protect_from_forgery with: :exception
before_filter :configure_permitted_parameters, if: :devise_controller?
def configure_permitted_parameters
devise_parameter_sanitizer.for(:account_update) do |u|
u.permit(:description, :image, :email, :password, :password_confirmation)
end
end
end
You have wrong http verb (post), you need PUT/PATCH not POST
devise_scope :user do
get "edit" => "pages#edit"
put "update" => "pages#update"
end
On your view looks like (example and not tested)
<%= form_for(#user, :url => update_pages_path, :html => { :method => :put }) do |f| %>
<%= devise_error_messages! %>
<div class="form-group">
<%= f.label :image, "Profile Image" %>
<%= f.file_field :image, class: "form-control" %>
</div>
<div class="form-group">
<%= f.label description, "Descrição" %>
<%= f.text_area :description, class: "form-control", rows: "10" %>
</div>
<% end %>
<%= f.submit "Save Image" %>

When a user clicks on "Forgot My Password" on the login screen, they are redirected to a route '/password-reset'. Right now, I'm trying to understand how to right the form for entering your email to receive and SMS from Twilio with a code.
<div class="form-group", style="width:50%;">
<%= form_for #user, url: password_patch_path(current_user) do |f| %>
<div class="form-group">
<%= f.label :email %>
<%= f.email_field :email, class: "form-control" %>
</div>
<%= f.submit "Get Confirmation Code", class: "btn btn-default" %>
<% end %>
</div>
The issue I'm running into is that #user is nil, and I'm uncertain if the url is correct at the beginning of the form for. It makes sense to me that #user is nil because no one is logged in, so I'm not sure what that should be.
My routes are
get '/password-reset', :to => 'passwords#edit', as: :password_reset
post '/password-reset', :to => 'passwords#reset', as: :password_edit
patch '/password-confirmation', :to => 'passwords#update', as: :password_patch
and my passwords controller looks like
class PasswordsController < ApplicationController
before_action :authenticated?, only: [:edit, :update]
def reset
ConfirmationSender.send_confirmation_to(current_user)
redirect_to new_confirmation_path
end
def edit
#user = current_user
end
def update
if passwords_not_empty? && passwords_equal?
current_user.update(password_params)
redirect_to users_dashboard_path(current_user.username), success: "Password Updated"
session[:authenticated] = false
else
redirect_to password_edit_path(current_user.username), warning: "Error, please try again."
end
end
private
def password_params
params.require(:user).permit(:password, :password_confirmation)
end
def passwords_not_empty?
params[:user][:password].length > 0 && params[:user][:password_confirmation].length > 0
end
def passwords_equal?
params[:user][:password] == params[:user][:password_confirmation]
end
def authenticated?
render :file => "#{Rails.root}/public/404.html", :status => 404 unless session[:authenticated]
end
end
You are right that there will be no current_user if a user forgot his/her password. I would redesign as follows:
PasswordsContoller
class PasswordsController < ApplicationController
before_action :authenticated?, only: [:update]
def reset
#user = User.find_by(email: params[:user][:email])
if #user.present?
ConfirmationSender.send_confirmation_to(#user)
redirect_to new_confirmation_path
else
redirect_to password_reset_path, warning: "Email not found."
end
end
def edit
#user = User.new
end
...
end
Form
<div class="form-group", style="width:50%;">
<%= form_for #user, url: password_edit_path do |f| %>
<div class="form-group">
<%= f.label :email %>
<%= f.email_field :email, class: "form-control" %>
</div>
<%= f.submit "Get Confirmation Code", class: "btn btn-default" %>
<% end %>
</div>
The new edit method seeds the form with a blank user. The new reset method looks up the user by email and sends the token if the user is found. If not, it displays an email not found flash message and redirects back to the forgotten password form.
This also makes the form use the correct path for requesting a password confirmation.
I have checked old similar post but but I'm still having problems.
When I create a new listing the URL looks as below:
http://localhost:3000/listings/new?plan=1
In the form_for I'm hiding some fields when plan=1
<%= form_for(#listing) do |f| %>
<%= render 'shared/error_messages', object: f.object %>
<%= f.hidden_field :plan, :value => #plan %>
<%= f.label :Title %>
<%= f.text_field :title, class: 'form-control' %>
<!-- don't show description for standard plan -->
<% if #plan != 1.to_s %>
<%= f.label :Description %>
<%= f.text_area :description, :rows => 10,
placeholder: "Describe your business...", class: 'form-control' %>
<% end %>
In the ListingsController I set the plan in before action:
before_action :set_plan, only: [:new, :create]
def set_plan
#plan = params[:plan]
end
so I can use it as hidden field on the form above.
My problem starts when I save the form with errors.
The new form URL changes to http://localhost:3000/listings.
I can see the #plan=1 still on the form:
<input value="1" type="hidden" name="listing[plan]" id="listing_plan" />
, but now the form is showing all fields (which should be hidden due to this condition <% if #plan != 1.to_s %>)
Actions in ListingsController:
def new
#listing = Listing.new
end
def create
#listing = current_user.listings.build(listing_params) if logged_in?
#plan = #listing.plan
if #listing.save
flash[:success] = "Listing created!"
redirect_to #listing
else
render 'new'
end
end
I have tried something like that but no success:
render :action => 'new', :plan => #listing.plan
and few other things
How can I hide those fields on error?
You should be able to solve this by modifying your ListingsController to set the plan on create. Specifically, in ListingsController.rb:
# app/controllers/listings_controller.rb
before_action :set_plan, only: [:new, :create]
Also, be sure your listing_params method permits :plan.
If you want this to function on update, then add :update to your before_action as well.
I have it fixed.
#plan = params[:plan]
was returning string (when the field in DB is integer), so I changed it to:
#plan = params[:plan].to_i
and now in the form I have the below for all actions:
<% if #plan != 1 %>
I am trying to update an invoice fields, when checking out in the carts controller. These must be present when checking out, or it should fail. However, I can't get it to update, much less validate them.
Here is my code:
cart show view:
<div class = "row">
<div class = "col-lg-3 col-lg-offset-6 text-left">
<strong>Customer: </strong>
<%= collection_select(:invoice, :customer_id, #customers, :id, :full_name, {:prompt => 'Please Select'}, class: 'form-control') %>
</div>
<div class = "col-lg-3 ext-left">
<strong>Seller: </strong>
<%= collection_select(:invoice, :employee_id, #employees, :id, :full_name, {:prompt => 'Please Select'}, class: 'form-control') %>
</div>
<div class = "col-lg-12 text-right">
<%= form_tag carts_checkout_path, method: :post do |f| %>
<%= submit_tag 'Complete', class: 'btn btn-success' %>
<% end %>
</div>
</div>
carts controller:
class CartsController < ApplicationController
def show
#invoice = current_invoice
#invoice_products = current_invoice.invoice_products
#customers = Customer.all
#employees = Employee.all
end
def checkout
current_invoice.customer_id = params[:customer_id]
current_invoice.employee_id = params[:employee_id]
current_invoice.save
redirect_to current_invoice
end
end
current_invoice is the current session's invoice, related to the cart. It redirects correctly, but doesn't update.
in the invoices controller:
def invoice_params
params.require(:invoice).permit(:invoice_number, :customer_id, :invoice_date, :invoice_status_id, :employee_id, invoice_products_attributes: [:id, :invoice_id, :product_id, :price, :tax, :discount, :value])
end
Can anyone please help me in identifying where I am going wrong? Could it be my approach is not even valid?
Thanks in advance
The type of functionality you're after is considered "business logic" and should be implemented in the model and called from the controller.
You can define a method in a model:
class Invoice < ActiveRecord::Base
def update_invoice(cust_id, emp_id)
if self.update_attributes(:customer_id => cust_id], :employee_id = emp_id])
puts "Success!
else
puts "Failed to update record. Handle the error."
end
end
You can call my_method from carts_controller.rb like this:
def update
# all your regular update logic here
# replace the bit of code that saves the cart with something like this:
respond_to do |format|
if(current_invoice.update_invoice(params[:customer_id], params[:employee_id])
if(#cart.update(cart_params))
format.html { redirect_to #activity, notice: 'Activity was successfully updated.' }
format.json { render :show, status: :ok, location: #activity }
else
format.html { render :edit }
format.json { render json: #activity.errors, status: :unprocessable_entity }
end
end
end
Also, note the use of update_attributes rather than save. Bear in mind that update_attributes will return false if you run into any problems updating (e.g. one or more validations failed). Don't confuse update_attributes with the singular update_attribute which updates a single field and will not run validations.
Finally got it.
current_invoice.update_attributes(customer_id: params[:invoice][:customer_id], employee_id: params[:invoice][:employee_id])
Also in view, changed location of form_tag:
<div class = "row">
<%= form_tag carts_checkout_path, method: :post do |f| %>
<div class = "col-lg-3 col-lg-offset-6 text-left">
<strong>Cliente: </strong>
<%= collection_select(:invoice, :customer_id, #customers, :id, :full_name, {:prompt => 'Favor Seleccionar'}, class: 'form-control') %>
</div>
<div class = "col-lg-3 ext-left">
<strong>Vendedor: </strong>
<%= collection_select(:invoice, :employee_id, #employees, :id, :full_name, {:prompt => 'Favor Seleccionar'}, class: 'form-control') %>
</div>
<div class = "col-lg-12 text-right">
<%= submit_tag 'Completar', class: 'btn btn-success' %>
</div>
<% end %>
</div>
Could it be my approach is not even valid
Your approach is definitely valid, it's great that you're using sessions in this way.
I'd do it slightly differently:
#config/routes.rb
resource :cart, except: [:edit, :new, :create], path_names: { update: "checkout" }
This will give you the following paths:
#url.com/cart -> carts#show (here you can invoke a cart if one doesn't exist)
#url.com/cart/checkout #-> POST to "update" method in carts controller
#url.com/cart/ (method: :delete) -> DELETE to "destroy" cart (refresh)
--
#app/controllers/carts_controller.rb
class CartsController < ApplicationController
before_action :setup_cart
def show
#cart = current_cart #-> products called from this. I don't know how you're linking them
#customers = Customer.all
#employees = Employee.all
end
def update
#invoice = Invoice.find_or_create_by(id: current_card.id)
#invoice.update update_params
redirect_to cart_path
end
def destroy
current_cart = nil
redirect_to carts_path, notice: "Cart Cleared"
end
private
def setup_cart
current_cart ||= sessions[:cart]
end
def update_params
params.require(:cart).permit(:customer_id, :employee_id)
end
end
Now, to update the cart, you'll want to take note from MarsAtomic's answer. However it must be noted that naked params are not available in the model.
If you use update_attributes, or just plain update, you'll need to do the following:
#app/models/cart.rb
class Invoice < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :products
belongs_to :employee
belongs_to :customer
#validations here
#callbacks here (what MarsAtomic refers to as business logic)
before_save :do_something, only: :update
private
def do_something
#something here
#params appended to current instance of object
#eg self.customer_id
end
end
I'd also go more succinct in your view:
#app/views/carts/show.html.erb
<div class = "row">
<%= form_tag cart_checkout_path, method: :patch do |f| %>
<% options = [["cliente", "customer"], ["vendedor", "employee"]] %>
<% options.each do |name, type| %>
<%= content_tag :strong, "#{name.titleize}:" %>
<%= collection_select :cart, eval(":#{type}_id"), instance_variable_get("##{type.pluralize}"), :id, :full_name, {:prompt => 'Favor Seleccionar'}, class: 'form-control') %>
<% end %>
<% content_tag :div, class: "col-lg-12 text-right" do %>
<%= submit_tag 'Completar', class: 'btn btn-success' %>
<% end %>
<% end %>
</div>
I'm making contact form on simple site using ruby on rails. Problem is following. I have main controller StaticPages that makes plain html with header and footer. Now i made controller Contacts that displays view with simple contact form on separate url. When i try to add this form to my contact page from StaticPages it doesn't work. i don't know how to tell rails that this form should find method not from StaticPages controller but from Contacts controller.
Here is my code:
Contacts controller
class ContactsController < ApplicationController
def new
#contact = Contact.new
end
def create
#contact = Contact.new(params[:contact])
#contact.request = request
if #contact.deliver
flash.now[:notice] = 'Thanks!'
else
flash.now[:error] = 'Error!'
render :new
end
end
end
StaticPages controller
class StaticPagesController < ApplicationController
def home
end
def about_us
end
def contact_us
end
end
and here is the form i need to work on StaticPage contact_us
<div align="center">
<h3>Send us message</h3>
<%= simple_form_for #contact, :html => {:class => 'form-horizontal' } do |f| %>
<%= f.input :name, :required => true %>
<%= f.input :email, :required => true %>
<%= f.input :message, :as => :text, :required => true %>
<div class= "hidden">
<%= f.input :nickname, :hint => 'Leave this field blank!' %>
</div>
<div>
</br>
<%= f.button :submit, 'Send', :class=> "btn btn-primary" %>
</div>
<% end %>
</div>
I guess I need to tell rails that this form should be looking for particular controller, but I don't know how.
Please help.
This isn't quite what you're looking for but it should work the way you want, you should have a contacts_helper.rb, that should look like this
module ContactsHelper
def contact_us
#contact = Contact.new
end
end
In your partial you'll want
<%= simple_form_for contact_us, :html => {:class => 'form-horizontal' } do |f| %>
And finally you need to include your helper, in application_controller.rb
class ApplicationController < ActionController::Base
# Prevent CSRF attacks by raising an exception.
# For APIs, you may want to use :null_session instead.
protect_from_forgery with: :exception
...
include ContactsHelper
...
end
One easy option would be to have the StaticPages contact_us action redirect_to new_contact_url (assuming that form lives at app/views/contacts/new.html.erb)
Alternatively, you could put the form in app/views/shared/_new_contact.html.erb, then put in #contact = Contact.new in your contact_us action, and have the contact_us template render partial: "shared/new_contact", locals: { :contact => #contact }.
I have signup form on my home screen. If user inputs invalid data I redirect him to /signin page. On this page I can see filled fields, but errors descriptions are empty.
Here is my UsersController:
class UsersController < ApplicationController
def new
#user = User.new(params[:user])
end
def create
#user = User.new(params[:user])
print #user
if #user.save
else
render 'new'
end
end
end
Method I use to show errors
module ApplicationHelper
def errors_for(model, attribute)
if model.errors[attribute].present?
content_tag :div, :class => 'well error' do
content_tag :ul do
model.errors[attribute].collect {|item| concat(content_tag(:li, item))}
end
end
end
end
end
My form partial:
<%= f.label :user_name %>
<%= f.text_field :user_name, :class=>"input-medium" %>
<%= errors_for(#user, :user_name) %>
<%= f.label :email %>
<%= f.text_field :email, :class=>"input-medium " %>
<%= errors_for(#user, :email) %>
<%= f.label :password %>
<%= f.password_field :password, :class=>"input-medium" %>
<%= f.label :password_confirmation, "Confirmation" %>
<%= f.password_field :password_confirmation, :class=>"input-medium" %>
and my signup view:
<section class="centered user-form-container">
<div class="user-form well pull-left">
<div class="centered">
<h1>Sign up</h1>
<%= form_for(#user, :action=>"create") do |f| %>
<%= render 'signup', :f=>f %>
<%= f.submit "Sign up" %>
<% end %>
</div>
</div>
</section>
In this situation, I believe you need to use flash.now, something like this:
Per the rails docs:
By default, adding values to the flash will make them available to the next request, but sometimes you may want to access those values in the same request. For example, if the create action fails to save a resource and you render the new template directly, that’s not going to result in a new request, but you may still want to display a message using the flash. To do this, you can use flash.now in the same way you use the normal flash:
def create
#user = User.new(params[:user])
print #user
if #user.save
else
# start with this, then expand the error text
flash.now[:error] = "Could not save user"
render 'new'
end
end
You would do this in your validation method.
If you are using a standard rails validation you would do this:
validates_presence_of :foo, :message => 'Message you want to display here'
If you are doing a custom validation then this:
def my_validation_method
begin
my_validation_code_here
rescue
self.errors[:base] << 'Message you want to display here'
end
end
def new
#user = User.new(params[:user])
if (!params[:user].nil?)
#user.valid?
end
end
