Grails version 2.4.1 was recently released. One of the bugs fixed was restoring the ability to use servlet version 2.5. See https://jira.grails.org/browse/GRAILS-11466
I created a new grails app. Without changing anything, I was able to compile it and run it. When I changed the grails.servlet.version to "2.5", I was able to compile but when I ran it I got the the following stack trace error.
Does anyone know if there are other settings I need to change to get Grails 2.4.1 to run on a servlet 2.5 container? Specifically, tomcat 6.

This error would happen if you didn't do a grails clean prior to running Grails after changing the version to 2.5
What happens is that when the version is 3.0 Grails adds extra dependencies to the classpath that result in new behaviour being added to the compiled classes.
If you then change the version to 2.5 and just do run-app the extra dependencies are gone, but the new behaviour is still compiled into the classes. Doing a clean resolve this.

I have found duplicate servlet name in .grails/***/resource/web.xml while running the run-app command in GGTS.
<servlet>
<servlet-name>grails-errorhandler</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>org.codehaus.groovy.grails.web.servlet.ErrorHandlingServlet</servlet-class>
</servlet>
<servlet>
<servlet-name>grails-errorhandler</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>org.codehaus.groovy.grails.web.servlet.ErrorHandlingServlet</servlet-class>
</servlet>
may I know why it is generating duplicate servlet name and how to fix this ?
The blog says that you should search for every class that extends the class Exception or a subclass of it and convert it from a groovy to a java class. However, it looks like it is not your code, but the internal Grails code that throws the exception.
Looking at your previous questions, it seems your final goal is to make your war runnable in a Java 7 Environment.
You should stick to java 6 on your upgrade-journey until you hit a Grails version that just runs on Java 7.
After every successful upgrade, compile your project with Java 6 and try to run it in a servlet container that runs on Java 7. Perhaps you'r lucky and it just works.
I'm pretty sure that this will not the last problem.
I don't know how many lines of code your project has, perhaps it's an option to reimplement the whole project in grails 3.
I have a Spring Boot application (Grails 3.1.8), but when I run the application in IntelliJ IDEA I get the following error:

I tried adding javax-servlet-api dependency as suggested in an answer to Constructor threw exception; nested exception is java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: javax/servlet/ServletContext
But then I started getting:

This post then suggests to remove the javax-servlet-api: Spring boot -- Unable to start EmbeddedWebApplicationContext due to missing EmbeddedServletContainerFactory bean
But then I face the original issue.
Any thoughts?
The issue was with the build.gradle file:
provided "org.springframework.boot:spring-boot-starter-tomcat"
IntelliJ IDEA wasn't happy with the provided.
As soon as I switched to
compile "org.springframework.boot:spring-boot-starter-tomcat"
the application worked.
Run with a Maven Spring Boot goal:
spring-boot:run
Steps to set up Maven configuration in IntelliJ IDEA:
Menu Debug/Run Configuration → Click on the + button visible at the top left → Select Maven → Set command line to spring-boot:run.
If you are using IntelliJ IDEA, you need to enable ' Include dependencies with "Provider" scope in menu Run → Edit Configurations → Application → 'your main class' (by default it's disabled)
Adding the dependency below fixed my issue:
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-boot-starter-web</artifactId>
</dependency>
Remember to have a parent dependency as well!
For me, it's because of the Tomcat version. I changed Tomcat version from 7.5 to 8.5, and the problem's solved.
Exception is java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: javax/servlet/ServletContext only means you are not providing the Tomcat dependency to your application. In case you are using IntelliJ IDEA, it’s really simple to do that as shown below.
Select your project → open the Maven panel (it mostly resides on the top right side of the panel) → select embedded.
When I try to run a freshly created project using Grails 2.5.0:
$ grails create-app test250
$ cd test250
$ grails run-app
I get the following error:

My machine is running OSX 10.10.2 and I have several projects running on Grails 2.2.5 without problems.
It looks like the problem is that commons-logging is indirectly used by the Tomcat plugin (ForkedTomcatServer extends the Grails ForkedGrailsProcess class which references org.apache.commons.logging.Log) but it's not exported, and it's not a Grails dependency.
It is an indirect dependency of the asset-pipeline plugin, so that should make the jar available and work around the bug for most users. Did you remove asset-pipeline as a dependent plugin in BuildConfig.groovy?
You should be able to get things working by explicitly adding a dependency for commons-logging in BuildConfig.groovy:
dependencies {
runtime 'commons-logging:commons-logging:1.2'
...
}
The problem was solved using GVM (as pointed by Jeff) to manage the different Grails versions installed on my machine.
I was trying to run my grails project which I upgraded to 2.4.4 from 2.3.5.
Now after trying to run it, I get these error:

Based on Grail's migration doc, it looks like they have remove ConfigurationHolder from 2.4.
You need to update the hibernate plugin.
From their doc:
Static Holder Classes The following deprecated classes have been
removed from Grails 2.4.x:
org.codehaus.groovy.grails.commons.ApplicationHolder
org.codehaus.groovy.grails.commons.ConfigurationHolder
org.codehaus.groovy.grails.plugins.PluginManagerHolder
org.codehaus.groovy.grails.web.context.ServletContextHolder
org.codehaus.groovy.grails.compiler.support.GrailsResourceLoaderHolder
If you or any plugins you have installed are using these classes you
will get a compilation error. The problem can be rectified by updating
to new plugins and using grails.util.Holders instead.
If your application uses the jquery plugin you will need to update to
version 1.11.0.2 or later as previous versions of the plugin made use
of the ApplicationHolder class. If your application uses the resources
plugin you will need to update to version 1.2.7 or later as previous
versions of the plugin made use of the ConfigurationHolder class.

I can't seem to figure this one out...
When deploying a JSF web app Glassfish complains about not being able to find JSFSServlet.
It's Glassfish 4 EE and I checked that c:/glassfish4/glassfish/modules contains javax.faces.jar.
My webapp doesn't have a JSF jar included in the WEB-INF/lib so there is no clash with the jar on the glassfish server.
I've re-installed my JDK and re-set my JAVA_HOME & path environment variables. Confirmed these are working by running java -version & javac -version from the command prompt which indicate I am running JDK1.7.25.
I've tried running Glassfish by:
1) Using eclipse (pointing to the correct JDK)
2) Standalone with WAR
And I get the same result!
What may be related is the install failed for Glassfish with the "requires version 1.6 or above" message and I had to install using glassfish-4-install.exe -j %JAVA_HOME%
Any help would be much appreciated! Here is the stack trace from glassfish:
