I have a link which reads
Collection
and another which reads
Wantlist
They link to the same view but produce different lists.
On that view page I want to be able to alter the text depending on if it is a Collection or Wantlist page. Something like this:
<% if :status == 'Got' %>collection<% elsif :status == 'Want' %>wantlist<% end %>
Obviously that doesn't work but after much experimentation I can't work out how to query which status was passed in the link. Is this possible?
You should be doing it like this
<% if params[:status] == 'Got' %>Collection
<% elsif params[:status] == 'Want' %>Wantlist
<% end %>
The parameters you pass to link_to get put into the params hash. Here, params[:status] is how you'd access it, either in the view or - better - in the controller.
link_to_if might be alternate solution for your question.
link_to_if(params[:status] == 'got', "Collection", user_collections_path(#user)) do
link_to "Wantlist" user_collections_path(#user)
end

Im having a dynamic header depending on the view and action of the controller and it works fine with the actions in "welcomes_controller". But Im not able to trigger a action from a different controller in this case posts_controller.

There are two helpers easily availalbe for this: controller_name and action_name. You can use a combo of these for conditional rendering.
That said, personally I feel this is a lot of clutter for the view - I can't help feeling this would be better set elsewhere. In a very simple sense, you could add the following in your controllers:
def index
#header_image = "header_background.jpg"
end
def trading
#header_image = "trading_background.jpg"
end
And then in the view:
image_tag(#header_image, alt: #header_image, :class => "header_background")
Alternatively, you could follow a convention for your images:
image_tag("#{controller_name}/#{action_name}.jpg", alt: action_name, :class => "header_background")
Then ensure your header images are stored in a folder named after the controller, named after the relevant action.
I'd strongly lean towards the latter.
Update: one final option would be to define a helper that handles this, something like, in you view:
= header_image_tag
And somewhere within your /helpers folder something akin to:
def header_image_tag
image_path = case controller_name
when "controller_one"
"header_background.jpg" if action_name == "index"
"trading_background.jpg" if action_name == "trading"
when "controller_two"
# ...
else
"default_image.jpg"
end
image_tag image_path, alt: # ...etc
end
I think the helper has access to controller_name and action_name, though if not you could pass these as args to header_image_tag, or pass the request as an arg and access request.controller_name and request.action_name.

Also keep in mind, if you need to be more granular with the specific controller you want to target you can also add the controller name to the check.

I am new to Rails, but slowly making progress. I can't quite wrap my head around how to achieve my next task.
I have a controller (IdeasController) with an index that looks like this:

Now, my problem is that I want to create a button that orders by created_at DESC or ASC. I want the button to essentially be a toggle. I also want another button to order by cached_weighted_average DESC or ASC. This is from acts_as_votable so I can sort by vote counts.
The problem I am running into is that I can create a link or button that orders by created_at or cached_weighted_average, but it replaces all of the URL that was previously filtered by :round or :challenge. For example, if a user clicks "Round 1" and sees all ideas marked for "Round 1" and then they click the link to order by cached_weighted_average, the URL replaces:
/ideas?round=Round+1
With this:
/ideas?sort=cached_weighted_average+ASC
What I want is:
/ideas?round=Round+1&?sort=cached_weighted_average+ASC
I know this is a very new question, but everything I have tried has failed so far. It feels like I am missing something very easy. What I noticed I can do easily is inside the controller I can do something like:
if params[:round].present?
#round_id = Round.find_by(name: params[:round]).id
#ideas = Idea.where(round_id: #round_id).order("cached_weighted_average DESC")
end
Which is perfect. This button just needs to switch between cached_weighted_average DESC and created_at DESC.

passing multiple parameters is one way to handle:
<%= link_to object.name, object_path(first: something, second: something_else) %>
then alter your conditionals to contemplate presence of multiple params.
to differentiate between round and challenge when attempting to allow the user to choose how they'd like to sort you could use the same name and then pass it different values.
something like:
params["round_or_challenge"]
this would change your conditional to something like:
if params["round_or_challenge"] == "round" && params["asc_or_desc"] == "asc"
# query
elsif params["round_or_challenge"] == "challenge"
# query
end
or whatever. it's basically the same...just pass the values you need. you can also pass the existing parameters from the view the same way you access them in the controller.

I ended up creating a helper, sortable. I also used the url_for to append at the end of whatever the current URL might be. I liked this approach because it meant I could sort on any parameter. I'm not sure that it's the best solution, but it works.

I'm trying to access the :id in the show action of the taxons controller. I have:
def show
#taxon_id = params[:id]
end
This assigns 'women/long-sleeve' to #taxon_id.
Is there a way to retrieve only 'women' from 'women/long-sleeve'.
I would like to render a partial based on this, something like:
<% if #taxon_id == params[:id] %>
<%= render 'shared/#{#taxon_id}' %>
<% end %>
But instead of rendering 'shared/women' it's trying to render 'shared/women/long-sleeve', which isn't a partial.

If you just want "women" from your params hash then you can do
#taxon_id = params[:id].split("/").first
I would just split on / and grab the first element in the resulting array:
params[:id].split('/').first
If it's always going to be in that format you can change your route:
match '/spree/taxons/:id/:slug' => 'taxons#show'
And your :id field will match correctly.

Beware: params are always strings.
So :
controller.params[:id].to_i == portfolio.id
SideNote: extract this kind of logic in helpers, it's much cleaner.
You might be comparing string and numerical values, which in Ruby are not considered equivalent. A conversion of one of or the other might help. In fact, if you roll this up in a helper method, it might make it a lot easier to follow:
def class_for_porfolio_entry(portfolio)

You've got a whole lot going on there, so you might want to look at ways of reducing the complexity, for instance using params instead:
def class_for_porfolio_entry(portfolio)
params[:controller] == 'portfolios' and
params[:action] == 'show' and
params[:id].to_i == portfolio.id ?
'selected' :
''
end
This could be simplified further if you had a boolean flag set in your controller that is later used as required, avoiding hard-coding something like this:
def class_for_porfolio_entry(portfolio)
if (#show_selected_portfolio and #portfolio.id == portfolio.id)
'selected'
else
''
end
end
This presumes you have an instance variable #portfolio, which is usually the case in any controller's show method, and that you will set #show_selected_portfolio to true in any controller method where this logic applies.
in my database I have a field which holds foreign keys. Sometimes the values are NULL or 0.
I know the helper blank?. Is there something similar to enable if there is a number set in the field? Because blank doesn't work here.
the code for the view is something like this
