I have a question that I have been unable to find a clear and concise answer to without extra unnecessary calls through Dart and Polymer.
I want to create a parent custom-element that is able to allow it's child objects to access the parents information.
Example:
If I create a container called Student-View that sets up some tabs and pulls the basic information. Then have a child element that is able to access much of the same information through {{firstname}} {{lastname}} etc...
I am not sure the best way to accomplish this, and would prefer if it were all self contained. Or, should I go the angular dart route. Thanks!

I need to write a form for creating a new entity and with it, up to 3 relations (which are new entities).
I can either have it dynamically attach/delete them dynamically (which could be useful) or have all 3 always be related to the entity, and for them to have an 'active' boolean on them, which would be just as appropriate.
At what point should I be doing this? I need them rendered as checkboxes on the form.
So far I've tried attaching them to the entity prior to passing it to the form, but choice fields can't be passed unmapped entities, so that's no good.
I've also tinkered with a DataTransformer for this, although then, as far as I can see, I would have to create new entities in the DataTransformer, which seems wrong, and I can't get to work anyway- I don't have access to the entity within it and even hacking around that, the relationship fails to bind properly (Doctrine tries to save the relationships first).
In Symfony1 terms, I could just embed a couple of forms for each additional relation I needed, using new objects, and it'd just work, so surely there's still a relatively easy way around this?
A friend also recommended looking into the ResizeFormEventListener, but this, as far as I understand, is for 'resizing' a form based on the returned data, whilst I never want the form to change, I want 3 checkboxes always.
What's the best way to approach this problem?
I'm not sure on exact details without playing with it - but based on how i've done similar things, i'd be looking to use a 'collectiontype' and then adding the three department types into that.
I have this problem of confusing when to include the entire object as a property of another object, or just its ID. It seems that if I include the entire object, the calls to load the containing object will unnecessarily also load the included object when I probably only need references. What is propert approach?
Generally always refer to another object.
Many ORM technologies have the idea of "proxies" and "lazy loading", meaning, unless you reference the object, it won't load it.
I prefer to include the object itself, since one object actually has a relationship with another actual object -- the object ID is just an implementation detail. To deal with the problem of unnecessary calls, look into "lazy loading".
Only include the other object if you need the details.
in MVC use a ViewModel ideally and not your entities. Your ViewModel contains only what it needs, so for example OrderEditViewModel would contain a customerid unless you want to display the custom name, in that case you would include the fields from customer. Some people recomend you flatten out your objects to a view model, so you dont have OrderEditViewModel.Customer.CustomerId but instead ORderEditViewModel.CustomerId. Automapper can help you do this (As well as valueinjecter - note the spelling)
If you must include an ID ensure when you save back to the database your update include a clause to say 'where id=#customerId and (logic here to ensure your user actually has access to that customerid and root object)
I have mvcsecurity.codeplex.com to help encrypt record ids on a web page to prevent against tampering as well (it helps but you should still have something in your query to prevent field tampering so an attacker cant add someone else's customer id for example_)

My suggestion would be to always think about the design and not about performance. Performance can be tweaked but design can't. So, if the two objects have that kind of a relationship where Aggregation/Composition is required, you should do that.
But, if your containing object only has to deal with the ID (for e.g. passing it to a different object which processes the ID to do something) then you can keep the ID field only. No need to expose the whole object (but make sure that your containing object does not need to know anything about the other object.).
I'm trying to implement a more customisable version of using ViewModel attributes and a Model Enricher to populate viewmodels lists like in this this question and associated blog post.
I would like to be able to specify the method on my select list interface from the Attribute.
Each Select List service I have returns an IEnumerable that I use to make a select list and presently exposes an All interface as the sample does. I can easily use the All method because all interfaces provide that. However I often wish to able to use other methods like the AllTradingCompanies() AllManafacturingCompanies() methods of my select list class to get filtered lists.
It is presently looking like I may have to implement a Custom attribute to map to specific e.g. [AllCompanyList] attributes but that moves me away from the nice generic method that the existing version gives me. I guess I could use it to complement it but then its starting to lose some of the charm. I also am implementing IModelEnrichers which can do custom per view model logic.
Any thoughts on a nice way to implement this?
I implemented the solution using pairs of Attributes to define a requirement for data on a ViewModel and a provider of data a repository or a service within my domain. See my follow up question asking whether this is a good idea.
I have a create page and an edit page for an entity. The pages are similar so I have a base view model which contains common fields between the pages, and a view model for each page which inherit from the base.
One of the differences between the two pages is that the create page has a search form where the user can enter criteria and search using an ajax query. The search criteria fields are not part of the entity. I created a "SearchCriteria" sub model with its own properties for the different search criteria so that I could simply post this model when performing the search, and potentially add more search criteria in the future without having to modify method parameters.
It turns out I do need to add something else, but that something else is one of the properties of the base view model. I'm not sure what the best way do this is. I'm thinking that I will have to consider the property to be no longer common and move it into my Edit view model and my SearchCriteria model, but then I lose my common mapping to the entity and will have to repeat code.
I think I may have gone wrong somewhere so some design advice would be appreciated.

I have faced a similar problem. First, with the search functionality. You can create a SearchServiceController. Then, add a partial view and pass it a model when you want to display the search bar, otherwise pass null and display nothing. This way you separate concerns by keeping the search functionality in its own process.
As far as adding a property that won't be used, I don't feel that this presents much of a problem. The .NET framework is filled with subclasses that do not implement parts of the base. Instead, you can throw a NotImplementedException. To me, its well worth the trade off to gain consistency and DRY.
Personally, I have found sharing viewmodels between controllers to not be a good thing (but in this case you may be using a single controller). Using IoC with Ninject, I get plenty of Cyclical Redundancy errors when binding my interfaces to the same viewmodels across controllers. For this reason, I took out Ninject. But, perhaps you can bind at another layer...have not tried it.
This is probably a very "dumb" question for whoever knows VirtualShellTools but I only started using it and couldn't find my answer in the demos' code. Please note that I'm also unfamiliar with virtualtreeview.
I use a VirtualExplorerTreeview to display a directory structure, linked with a VirtualExplorerListview to display a certain type of files in the selected directory as well as specific informations about them
I've been able to point them at the right place, link them as I wanted, filter everything in the listview, and looking at the demos I have a pretty good idea about how to add my own columns and draw it to display my custom data.
My issue lies with the Treeview: I would like to sort the directories displayed in the order I want; specifically, I want "My Docs" and other folder to appears first, then drives, then removable media. Looking in the TNamespace property I found how to distinguish them (Directory and Removable properties), but I don't know how to implement my own sort/what event I need. I tried CompareNode but that doesn't even seem to be called.
If you want to do everything yourself, then set toUserSort in the TVirtualExplorerTree.TreeOptions.VETMiscOptions property. That causes the control to just use the DoCompare method inherited from the virtual tree view, and that should call the OnCompareNodes event handler.
A better way is to provide a custom TShellSortHelper. Make a descendant of that class and override whichever methods you need. Create an instance of that class and assign it to the tree's SortHelper property. (The tree takes ownership of the helper; free the old one, but not the new one.) If the items are being sorted on a column that that class doesn't know how to compare, then handle the tree's OnCustomColumnCompare event.
To help you figure out exactly which methods you need to override or events you need to handle, set a breakpoint in TCustomVirtualExplorerTree.DoCompare and step through to see what gets called in various situations.
