Sorry if this is a bad question, I'm trying to initially set up Rails, so I don't really know what I'm doing. In the tutorial I'm following it comes to a point at which is says to run "rails server," however this is returning some unexpected results.(See below)

Sorry if this is not needed, but I'm really unsure what to do with it.
I don't think you're alone in this error.
Make sure you coordinate your gem versions, and even better if specify the versions of your Rails & Ruby gems to avoid potential conflicts in versioning.
Posting your Gemfile would be helpful, but without seeing it, I'd say to specify your Ruby version at the top of your gemfile like:
source 'https://rubygems.org'
ruby '2.0.0'
Then specify your version of Rails. While I have had no problems with just providing:
gem 'rails'
You could be extra safe and specify a version like:
gem 'rails', '4.0.2'
Then run: bundle install for your app.
Take a look at the following tutorial. I realise that it is for windows however it solved all the initial problems I was having with my first install.

Run gem update on a fresh install to make sure everything is up to date

I am following this steps to install ruby on rails in ubuntu or linux subsystem on windows 10.
But this time, I used the updated ruby which is version 2.3.3, rails which is version 5.0.0.1, but after successfull installation of all the requirements, I tried to run this

Seems to be a windows related issue from last month.
Haven't used ruby on rails in quite a while so I can't reproduce or test (right now) to see if this is true.
From a comment wich was helpful to others:
Go to you config/environments/development.rb and comment out the last
line, something about watching files and listen gem. can't remember
from the top of my head the exact wording, but it is the last line of
config
this is new a new method that rails uses to watch changed files, but
it doesn't work on WSL
I think guard gem will also fail because of this
Bottom line:
Using rails new --skip-spring --skip-listen gives you a working app
I inherited a rails app that I believe was written in rails 3. I am now running rails 4.2.3. When I try to run the app locally (rails s) I get a host of errors related to active record and initializers. I have searched for these errors individually, but nothing I have done so far has worked.

I upgraded the gem file to use rails 4
I have upgraded the gems using bundle upgrade. No luck.
I have sent a message to the original dev and he has no idea why this is happening.

Why is my server not running when I try to start my application? I have node.js installed and I believe I have execjs installed as well which neither fixed the issue. No idea what the problem is. Yes I am new so cut me some slack please! Thanks

FirstApp? I guess you are taking the Hartl's tutorial. How did you install rails?
If you installed via rails installer for windows, probably you have a version higher than 4.0.8 and you manually switched version in Gemfile which is not good in this case. If this is the scenario, install 4.0.8 from the beginning and create firstapp with it. [1]
There are few syntax changes for development.rb, buy I think even if you manually change text there it will not work. You can try changing Rails.application.configure.do to FirstApp::Application.configure.do

I just started the Ruby on Rails Tutorial by Michael Hartl. I am currently trying to get the exact same gems versions (listing 1.5 in the book) he uses to avoid future problems. I managed to run bundle update and bundle install with no problems but when I try to start the server by rails server I get error you will see below.
The only main difference I can spot between his dev environment and mine is that I use rbenv and set the local ruby version for the project to 2.0.0-p353, and he uses RVM with ruby version 2.0.0. Could this be causing the problem? I can't find a ruby 2.0.0 version (without any -p...) on rbenv.

The error is clear that in config/environments/development.rb:23 you configure active_record which is not loaded.
Just remove
config.active_record.migration_error = :page_load
Will be ok.
Leedy Liu is right to some degree, but if you're getting this error when you create a new Rails app, t suggests a deeper problem with your environment
According to this answer, you may have require "active_record/railtie" commented out in your application.rb file. Please check to make sure this is not the case
You may have to re-install Rails with ActiveRecord to ensure the functionality is restored with your app. Have you tried this:
gem install bundler
gem install rails
bundle install
Other than that, you need to ensure Ruby on Rails is installed correctly. What env are you running? Linux or Windows?
As a general fix, remove all references to active_record. Easiest way is to do a find on the root directory of "active_records", find all usages, and remove them. I found usages in config/application.rb and config/environments/development and production.rb.
Try:
'gem install bundler'
then:
'bundle install'
again.
See if it clears up.
Comment config.active_record.raise_in_transactional_callbacks = true in config/application.rb and config.active_record.migration_error = :page_load in config/environments/development.rb.
