Change UILabel's base class UIView to a Custom UIView? - ios

As we all know the inheritence hierarchy of UILabel is:
UIView : UIResponder : NSObject
Now I want to change the UIView in the hierarchy to my custom UIView like:
CustomView: UIResponder : NSObject
So that all UILabels in my app Will have my custom UIView in their inheritence hierarchy.

That is not possible.
However, you can look for extending your class using a category.
A category allows you to add methods to a class, but does not allow to change them.

Depending on what you are trying to achieve, subclassing UILable may still be an option. What exactly are you up to?
Edit: Well, theoretically it is possible chaning an object's superclass during runtime. However, I am not sure whether I really should recommend that to somebody who just asked your question. It is rather advanced, if advisable at all, and should be done by programmers who know exactly what they are doing.

How to apply style to all UIViews programatically

I have a class that defines all styles on a UIVIew.
They are all predefined but I'm not sure when to fire this.
When I try to create an extension for this:

And I'm getting this error:

Any ideas on how to be able to apply a same behaviour when all of my UIViews will become visible?
You can use Swizzling technic to customize UIView's function. Take a look at:

Even though Swift's Extensions are similar to Categories from Objective-C, what you are trying to do is not allowed in Swift.
You cannot override existing functionality:
Extensions can add new functionality to a type, but they cannot override existing functionality.

Depending on what it is that you are trying to style, you might want to take a look at UIAppearance, it will allow you to style default colors for the UINavigationBar, amongst other things. NSHipster has a good post about it: NSHipster - UIAppearance
You can create a subclass of UIView with the method .stylize().
Then each view you create, you inherit of you UIView subclass.
You'll be able to cal .stylize() on each UIViewSubclass. Simply write the style code inside the subclass and inherite.

Use a category to add the method to the existing UIView class.

Outside of swizzling (not generally recommended), or subclassing as noted by David in his answer, there isn't really a way to override existing methods on a class and its subclasses.
One thing you might try is creating a base class for your view controller instead of all your views. In your view controller base class, you could override viewWillLayoutSubviews to recurse through the view hierarchy and call stylize on each view. This means you would be using the subclass approach in fewer places (just view controllers as opposed to all views).
Another thing you might consider if taking the subclassing approach with UIView is that if you are subclassing anyway, you can take advantage of things like #IBDesignable and #IBInspectable to better integrate those UIView subclasses with storyboards and live preview.

How to show subclass of UIControl in View Controller

I would like to be able to interact with the UIControl I have made, and therefore want it in my ViewController.
What I tried
I subclassed UIControl (1).
Then I added a UIView to my View Controller and assigned it the new class (2).
But in Interface Builder I am not able to set my outlets to the buttons contained in the new class (1)?!

UIControl's documentation confirms that it is a subclass of UIView, and I should therefore be able to connect the outlets, right?
What am I missing here? :/
Off-course you can't add IBOutlet because buttons what you added to WeekdayControl are in UIViewController, you can't add Outlet to WeekdayControl, buttons only subviews of WeekdayControl, UIViewController is boss here, and you can add outlet only to UIViewController. (Sorry for my English)
Better create you buttons programatically in WeekdayControl.
Must read first:-

So, you are doing wrong, if you really need to make a custom view or custom control then you can directly do it by creating a custom UIView and connecting the outlets directly with the view.
I think you missing the objective of subclassing a UIControl, it doesn't give rights to create outlets as it's a subclass of UIView,just read this lines what it is stated in the docs:-
Subclassing Notes
You may want to extend a UIControl subclass for either of two reasons:
To observe or modify the dispatch of action messages to targets for
particular events
To do this, override sendAction:to:forEvent:, evaluate the passed-in
selector, target object, or UIControlEvents bit mask, and proceed as

UIView or UIViewController subclass?

I'm trying to refactor my code in the best possible way and I'm wondering what the proper architecture for the given situation is.
What I'm Trying To Do
What I'm doing is pretty simple: I have some custom CALayer subclasses that represent an interactive UI element. They are broken up into multiple layers since some of the parts of the UI are static, so I didn't want to redraw those static elements needlessly. Right now, the layers are added as sublayers in the initialization part of a CustomView class that is a subclass of UIView.
There is currently no corresponding CustomViewController class that is a subclass of UIViewController because when I'm using the CustomView, it's contained within a UITableViewCell or a part of a generic UIViewController with other views in it, so I felt another UIViewController for each CustomView instance would be redundant.
Also of importance is the that the only operation that I'm doing inside of the UIView class is I'm responding to touch events and sending the touch information to the sublayers so that the UI can update its appearance accordingly. I'm not overriding the drawRect method or anything like that.
The Question
Basically, I'm trying to figure out whether I should either:
Option 1:
Get rid of the CustomView class, create a CustomViewController class that is a subclass of UIViewController, and simply add the CALayer objects as sublayers of the CustomViewController's built-in view property.
or
Option 2:
My thinking about the UIViewController subclass being redundant is correct, so I should leave it the way I have it and have a CustomView class with the CALayer objects inside of it.
I would highly appreciate any advice on this.
I think that in terms of MVC, the code you're describing (option #2) is well written and maintains a very clear boundary of responsibility. You're not writing any code that has nothing to do with the view layer itself in this class which is great. I think that in this case there's no need for a separate UIViewController subclass to manage these instances because as you said - they are handling their own touch events and visible layers (exactly their responsibility).
If for any reason there is a need for something more complex that requires data related logic or other such computation, I would definitely consider subclassing a UIViewController or maybe looking at the problem in an entirely different way.
Given the situation you've presented, I think that maintaining the CALayer instance within this UIView subclass ('CustomView') is the right way to go.

Can a subclass of B (which inherits from class A) inherit from a subclass of A instead of A itself?

I'm working on an accessibility project for an iOS application. Because accessibility does not act quite as advertised, I have to override accessibilityFrame, accessibilityActivationPoint and pointInside:withEvent in a subclass in order to expand the region recognized by VoiceOver (for both drawing and touch recognition) beyond the "natural" bounds of the control view. So, in order to change the VoiceOver bounds of a UIButton I have to subclass that class and then add these three methods. In order to do this for a UILabel I have to add another subclass with the code, and so on.
I can refactor the code in these methods to a central location, but I was wondering if this can be done more elegantly with inheritance. I'd like to put this code into a subclass of UIView (maybe called UIViewAccessible) and then create a subclass of UIButton called UIButtonAccessible which inherits from UIButton which would in turn inherit from UIViewAccessible instead of UIView. Is this possible, or can something like this be done with a category?
Edit: According to the docs, you can't really achieve this with a category:
If the name of a method declared in a category is the same as a method in the original class, or a method in another category on the same class (or even a superclass), the behavior is undefined as to which method implementation is used at runtime.
Is there some other way to do this?
To answer your question, no, it can't, since your UIViewAccessible is a second degree sibling to UIButton in the inheritance chain (both inherit from UIView at some point). But I guess you already knew that. As for a solution, you could wrap around your UIView accessible classes a decorator and use protocols for strong typing. That way you'll keep the code in one place. I've described this technique here in more detail (although for a different purpose, it's the same situation).
For the views that would support accessibility you'll have to do this:

How to make My UIControl subclass as superclass of programmatically created UIElements?

In my application I want to associate NSMutableDictionary to all UIElements (UIButton, UILable, etc), I can easily achieve this by subclassing each element, but I just want to know if I can make my own UIControl subclass -with a property of type NSMutableDictionary-, as superclass of all programmatically created UIElement s in anyway, so that I can reduce the number of subclasses.

You can do this, not by subclassing, but by adding your own properties and methods to UIControl itself (the superclass of UIButton, UILabel, etc.). These will then be inherited by any standard buttons, labels, etc. that you instantiate. Objective-C lets you add your own methods very easily using Categories. However, you can't add instance variables via categories. To do that, you need to use Associative References which are documented in the Objective-C Runtime Reference.

By the way, I don't necessarily disagree with inturbidus. But if you're sure you want to go this route, that's how you'd do it.
