I'm developing an iOS app that has 2 VCs, mapVC(using google map SDK) and webVC. Selecting an annotation on mapVC, then transition to webVC with corresponding webpage openned.
But loadRequest method in viewDidLoad of webView is too slow to wait.
So I want to preload the web data when selecting a pin on mapView, and then hand over the preloaded data to webVC using loadData method.
But webVC displays only text, no images no CSS.
What should I do to preload full HTML/CSS/images?
any advice appreciated. thanks in advance.
my current source code as follows.
// --- mapViewController ---
- (BOOL)mapView:(GMSMapView *)mapView didTapMarker:(GMSMarker *)marker
{
NSURL *url = [NSURL URLWithString:#"(target URL)"];
NSURLRequest *urlRequest = [NSURLRequest requestWithURL:url
cachePolicy:NSURLRequestUseProtocolCachePolicy
timeoutInterval:60.0];
receivedData = [NSMutableData dataWithCapacity:0];
NSURLConnection *urlConnection;
urlConnection = [NSURLConnection connectionWithRequest:urlRequest delegate:self];
if (!urlConnection) {
receivedData = nil;
}
}
- (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didReceiveResponse:(NSURLResponse *)response
{
[receivedData setLength:0];
}
- (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didReceiveData:(NSData *)data
{
[receivedData appendData:data];
}
- (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didFailWithError:(NSError *)error
{
receivedData = nil;
}
- (void)connectionDidFinishLoading:(NSURLConnection *)connection
{
}
- (void)prepareForSegue:(UIStoryboardSegue *)segue sender:(id)sender
{
if ([[segue identifier] isEqualToString:#"showWeb"]) {
WebViewController *webViewController = [segue destinationViewController];
webViewController.preloadedData = receivedData;
}
}
// --- webViewController ---
- (void)viewDidLoad
{
[super viewDidLoad];
self.webView.delegate = self;
[self.webView loadData:self.preloadedData
MIMEType:#"text/html"
textEncodingName:#"utf-8"
baseURL:nil];
}
Take a look at ASIWebPageRequest. It allows the download of the entire web page, including all resources.
You have only loaded the HTML-Code but not the Content (e.g. media / images / css). You must pre parse the Response and manually pre load the rest stuff.
NSURLConnection make no look up for URL´s inside the response and no autoload

I've tried most of advises from stackoverflow but none of them was good for me.
My client wants to save user data in json with GET request in format:
http://website.com/users/save.php?save={"email":"user#domen.com","name":"Will Smith"}
I'm using objective-c
Please advise
Thanks
Edit
my php file looks like this:
<?php
$save = $_GET['save'];
$fp = fopen("save_users_ww.txt", "a+");
fputs($fp,$save."\r\n");
fclose($fp);
?>
so post don't work for me. Thank you for help again
In case someone else will need a solution, this is my code:
.h file:
#interface WelcomeViewController : UIViewController <NSURLConnectionDelegate>
{
NSMutableData *_responseData;
}
.m file:
-(void)postToDataBaseWithName:(NSString*)nameToPost andEmail:(NSString*)emailToPost {
NSString *str = [NSString stringWithFormat:#"http://website.com/users/save.php?save={\"email\":\"%#\",\"name\":\"%#\"}", emailToPost, nameToPost];
str = [str stringByAddingPercentEscapesUsingEncoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding];
NSURL *url = [NSURL URLWithString:str];
NSURLRequest *request = [NSURLRequest requestWithURL:url];
// Create url connection and fire request
NSURLConnection *conn = [[NSURLConnection alloc] initWithRequest:request delegate:self];
if(conn) {
}
}
also add delegate methods to see how it works:
#pragma mark NSURLConnection Delegate Methods
- (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didReceiveResponse:(NSURLResponse *)response {
// A response has been received, this is where we initialize the instance var you created
// so that we can append data to it in the didReceiveData method
// Furthermore, this method is called each time there is a redirect so reinitializing it
// also serves to clear it
NSLog(#"didReceiveResponse");
_responseData = [[NSMutableData alloc] init];
}
- (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didReceiveData:(NSData *)data {
// Append the new data to the instance variable you declared
NSLog(#"didReceiveData");
[_responseData appendData:data];
}
- (NSCachedURLResponse *)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection
willCacheResponse:(NSCachedURLResponse*)cachedResponse {
// Return nil to indicate not necessary to store a cached response for this connection
return nil;
}
- (void)connectionDidFinishLoading:(NSURLConnection *)connection {
// The request is complete and data has been received
// You can parse the stuff in your instance variable now
NSLog(#"connectionDidFinishLoading");
}
- (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didFailWithError:(NSError *)error {
// The request has failed for some reason!
// Check the error var
NSLog(#"didFailWithError = %#", error);
}
In My App I download the audio files from the server, And the files are downloaded fine when the app is in foreground and when I clicked home button or lock button to force the app to go to background, then after some time, the download is stopped and the error comes as the 1005 network connection lost. Whats the problem? Can Anybody explain the issue?
Code:
NSURL *url = [NSURL URLWithString:currentURL];
NSURLRequest *theRequest = [NSURLRequest requestWithURL:url cachePolicy:NSURLRequestReloadIgnoringLocalCacheData timeoutInterval:60];
receivedData = [[NSMutableData alloc] initWithLength:0];
NSURLConnection * connection = [[NSURLConnection alloc] initWithRequest:theRequest delegate:self startImmediately:YES];
myConnection = connection;
NSLog(#"%# Download Started", currentURL);
- (void) connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didReceiveResponse:(NSURLResponse *)response {
[UIApplication sharedApplication].networkActivityIndicatorVisible = YES;
[receivedData setLength:0];
expectedBytes = [response expectedContentLength];
}
- (void) connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didReceiveData:(NSData *)data {
[receivedData appendData:data];
float progressive = (float)[receivedData length] / (float)expectedBytes;
[downloadProgressView setProgress:progressive];
NSInteger val = progressive*100;
downloadpercentageLabel.text = [NSString stringWithFormat:#"%ld%#",(long)val,#"%"];
//[UIApplication sharedApplication].idleTimerDisabled = YES;
}
- (void) connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didFailWithError:(NSError *)error {
[UIApplication sharedApplication].networkActivityIndicatorVisible = NO;
}
Use background NSURLSession. It handles network interruptions and downloads exceeding 3 minutes. See Downloading Content in the Background section of The App Programming Guide for iOS, which describes background downloads. Also refer to WWDC 2013 video in What’s New in Foundation Networking (it's covered later in the video).
I'm currently experimenting with the twitter streaming api and i'm trying to get a stream with NSURLConnection. As it doesn't work with twitter, i simplified everything and tried to get some source-code out of google's website, but this doesn't work neither.
The connection starts and ends, but without calling the didReceiveData delegate. I'm sure i'm missing something. Hope you guy's can help me!
In the header: #interface ViewController : UIViewController <NSURLConnectionDataDelegate, NSURLConnectionDelegate, NSURLConnectionDownloadDelegate, NSURLAuthenticationChallengeSender>
And in the body:
- (void)viewDidLoad
{
[super viewDidLoad];
NSURLConnection *connection;
NSMutableURLRequest *request;
// Do any additional setup after loading the view, typically from a nib.
request = [[NSMutableURLRequest alloc] initWithURL:[NSURL URLWithString:#"http://www.google.com"]];
[request setHTTPMethod:#"GET"];
connection = [[NSURLConnection alloc] initWithRequest:request delegate:self];
[connection start];
}
- (void)connectionDidFinishDownloading:(NSURLConnection *)connection destinationURL:(NSURL *)destinationURL {
NSLog(#"Stream finished.");
}
- (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didReceiveData:(NSData *)data {
NSString *dataString = [[NSString alloc] initWithData:data encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding];
NSLog(#"%#", dataString);
}
- (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didFailWithError:(NSError *)error{
NSLog(#"Connection failed!");
}
A couple of thoughts.
Your declaration of connectionDidFinishLoading doesn't look right. The standard NSURLConnectionDataDelegate method does not have a destinationURL parameter:
- (void)connectionDidFinishLoading:(NSURLConnection *)connection
{
NSLog(#"%s", __FUNCTION__);
}
Given the presence of NSURLAuthenticationChallengeSender, if you're expecting a challenge (which you won't get with Google web site) then you'd obviously handle it accordingly:
- (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didReceiveAuthenticationChallenge:(NSURLAuthenticationChallenge *)challenge
{
// For example, if you have a userid/password to use, see if this is the first
// challenge, and then tell NSURLConnection to try using those credentials, and if
// it failed a second time, you might just cancel the authentication challenge.
if (challenge.previousFailureCount == 0) {
NSURLCredential *credential = [NSURLCredential credentialWithUser:kUserID password:kPassword persistence:NSURLCredentialPersistenceForSession];
[challenge.sender useCredential:credential forAuthenticationChallenge:challenge];
} else {
[challenge.sender cancelAuthenticationChallenge:challenge];
}
}
By the way, you do not want to call start method when you use initWithRequest or connectionWithRequest. It's only needed if you do a simple initWithRequest:delegate:startImmediately: and instruct it to not startImmediately.
Anyway, I used the following and it works fine:
- (void)viewDidLoad
{
[super viewDidLoad];
NSMutableURLRequest *request = [[NSMutableURLRequest alloc] initWithURL:[NSURL URLWithString:#"http://www.google.com"]];
[NSURLConnection connectionWithRequest:request delegate:self];
}
- (void)connectionDidFinishLoading:(NSURLConnection *)connection
{
NSLog(#"%s", __FUNCTION__);
}
- (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didReceiveData:(NSData *)data {
NSString *dataString = [[NSString alloc] initWithData:data encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding];
NSLog(#"%s: %#", __FUNCTION__, dataString);
}
- (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didFailWithError:(NSError *)error{
NSLog(#"%s error=%#", __FUNCTION__, error);
}
Someone said here that it was their SOAP format
NSURLConnection delegate method: didReceiveData not called ...Why ?? (iPhone SDK)
This also may be what you are looking for
NSURLConnection didReceiveData not called
Your NSURLConnection local variable connection is going out of scope at the end of viewDidLoad. Add a property to your ViewController to hold the NSURLConnection variable in scope.
I'm fairly new to iOS Development and I'm trying to get content from an URL. I'm using the Apple tutorial for using NSURLConnection, everything is working but I'm not getting data. I've looked around and couldn't find an answer to my problem. I'm also using ARC in my project, maybe that causes the problem?
Here is the code I'm using, starting with my header file:
#interface ViewController : UIViewController
#property (nonatomic, retain) NSMutableData *receivedData;
#end
implementation file:
#implementation ViewController
#synthesize receivedData;
- (void)didReceiveMemoryWarning
{
[super didReceiveMemoryWarning];
// Release any cached data, images, etc that aren't in use.
}
- (void)viewDidLoad
{
[super viewDidLoad];
NSLog(#"1. viewDidLoad");
// Create the request
NSURLRequest *request = [NSURLRequest requestWithURL:[NSURL URLWithString:#"http://www.apple.com/"] cachePolicy:NSURLRequestUseProtocolCachePolicy timeoutInterval:60.0];
// Create the connection with the request and start loading the data
NSURLConnection *connection = [[NSURLConnection alloc] initWithRequest:request delegate:self];
if (connection) {
NSLog(#"2. connection succeeded");
receivedData = [NSMutableData data];
} else {
NSLog(#"2. connection failed");
}
}
- (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didReceiveResponse:(NSURLResponse *)response
{
NSLog(#"3. didReceiveResponse");
[receivedData setLength:0];
}
- (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didReceiveData:(NSData *)data
{
[receivedData appendData:data];
}
- (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didFailWithError:(NSError *)error
{
NSLog(#"4. Connection failed! Error - %# %#", [error localizedDescription], [[error userInfo] objectForKey:NSURLErrorFailingURLStringErrorKey]);
}
- (void)connectionDidFinishLoading:(NSURLConnection *)connection
{
NSLog(#"4. Succeeded! Received %d bytes of data", [receivedData length]);
}
All the NSLog are working, but it keeps saying receivedData has 0 bytes. I couldn't find an answer to my problem so I hope I can find my answer with this question.
I have translated the Using NSURLConnection part of the URL Loading System Programming Guide using ARC.
//
// MyConnection.h
//
#import <Foundation/Foundation.h>
#interface MyConnection : NSObject
- (void)start;
#property NSMutableData *receivedData;
#end
//
// MyConnection.m
//
#import "MyConnection.h"
#implementation MyConnection
- (void)start {
// Create the request
NSURLRequest *theRequest = [NSURLRequest requestWithURL:[NSURL URLWithString:#"http://www.apple.com"] cachePolicy:NSURLRequestUseProtocolCachePolicy timeoutInterval:60.0];
// Create the connection with the request and start loading the data
NSURLConnection *theConnection = [[NSURLConnection alloc] initWithRequest:theRequest delegate:self];
if (theConnection) {
// Create the NSMUtableData to fold the received data
// ReceivedData is an instance variable declared elsewhere
_receivedData = [NSMutableData data];
}
}
- (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didReceiveResponse:(NSURLResponse *)response
{
[_receivedData setLength:0];
}
- (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didReceiveData:(NSData *)data
{
[_receivedData appendData:data];
}
- (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didFailWithError:(NSError *)error
{
// Inform the user
NSLog(#"Connectionfailed! Error - %# %#",
[error localizedDescription],
[[error userInfo] objectForKey:NSURLErrorFailingURLStringErrorKey]);
}
- (void)connectionDidFinishLoading:(NSURLConnection *)connection
{
// Do something with the data
NSLog(#"Succeeded! Recevied %d bytes of data", [_receivedData length]);
}
#end
Just for the sake of completion. I've had the same problem, with cause in threading. If the thread that owns the NSURLConnection object is different than the thread that owns the delegate, the delegate will not receive notifications. That means that the error in connection would also be gone.
So make sure you create NSURLConnection on same thread that you created the delegate.
You need to start the connection.
You could, for example, use – initWithRequest:delegate:startImmediately:.
An even smaller change to your existing code would be to just use - start on your connection on the if branch:
NSURLConnection *connection = [[NSURLConnection alloc]
initWithRequest:request
delegate:self
startImmediately:NO
];
if (connection) {
NSLog(#"2. connection succeeded");
receivedData = [NSMutableData data];
[connection start];
} else {
NSLog(#"2. connection failed");
}
You can find the reference manual for NSURLConnection here
I am new to iOS and working on an app which runs on a real device (iPad). So, when I launch my app on the iPad after the view is visible, the app should be able poll a web server or something (without any user interaction) and get some information over HTTP and based on this information, I want fill some text fields in the app view. can you let me know if it is possible to do something like this in iOS? if so how and some sample pieces of code would be much appreciated.
Thanks.
You can download information over http using NSURLConnection in the viewWillAppear or viewDidLoad. After download the data if its XML parse using NSXMLParser (or any other XML parser for iOS).
//Lets say you have download and process method
- (void)downloadAndProcess
{
//URL you want to download Info from
NSURL* url = [NSURL URLWithString:#"http://google.com"];
//Make a mutable url request
NSMutableURLRequest* req = [[NSMutableURLRequest alloc] initWithURL:url cachePolicy:NSURLRequestReloadIgnoringLocalAndRemoteCacheData timeoutInterval:60];
NSURLConnection* conn = [NSURLConnection connectionWithRequest:req delegate:self];
if(conn)
{
//NSMutableData receivedData is an instance variable
receivedData = [[NSMutableData alloc] init];
}
}
//NSURLConnection Delegate methods here
- (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didReceiveResponse:(NSURLResponse *)response
{
[receivedData setLength:0];
}
- (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didReceiveData:(NSData *)data
{
[receivedData appendData:data];
}
- (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didFailWithError:(NSError *)error
{
NSLog(#"Error downloading data :%#",[error localizedDescription]);
// release receivedData object when connection fails
[receivedData release],receivedData = nil;
}
- (void)connectionDidFinishLoading:(NSURLConnection *)connection
{
// Connection did finish downloading data which you can process based on what your data is
// release receivedData object once you are done processing it.
[receivedData release],receivedData = nil;
}
