Running NSURLSession completion handler on main thread - ios

I am using a NSURLSession to get the values to populate a TableView. I am updating the TableView in the completion handler, but using [[NSThread currentThread] isMainThread] has shown me that the completion handler isn't running in the main thread. Since I should only updating the UI from the main thread, I know this isn't correct. Is there a way to trigger an action on the main thread from the completion handler? Or is using a NSURLSession the wrong way to go about this?
NSURLSession *session = [NSURLSession sharedSession];
[[session dataTaskWithURL:[NSURL URLWithString:#"http://myurl"]
completionHandler:^(NSData *data, NSURLResponse *response, NSError *error) {
NSError *jsonError = nil;
NSArray* jsonUsers = [NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData:data options:0 error:&jsonError];
if (jsonError) {
NSLog(#"error is %#", [jsonError localizedDescription]);
// Handle Error and return
return;
}
self.userArray = jsonUsers;
[self.userTableView reloadData];
if ([[NSThread currentThread] isMainThread]){
NSLog(#"In main thread--completion handler");
}
else{
NSLog(#"Not in main thread--completion handler");
}
}] resume];

Yes, just dispatch your main thread stuff using GCD:
NSURLSession *session = [NSURLSession sharedSession];
[[session dataTaskWithURL:[NSURL URLWithString:#"http://myurl"]
completionHandler:^(NSData *data, NSURLResponse *response, NSError *error) {
NSError *jsonError = nil;
NSArray* jsonUsers = [NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData:data options:0 error:&jsonError];
if (jsonError) {
NSLog(#"error is %#", [jsonError localizedDescription]);
// Handle Error and return
return;
}
dispatch_async(dispatch_get_main_queue(), ^{
self.userArray = jsonUsers;
[self.userTableView reloadData];
if ([[NSThread currentThread] isMainThread]){
NSLog(#"In main thread--completion handler");
}
else{
NSLog(#"Not in main thread--completion handler");
}
});
}] resume];

#graver's answer is good. Here's another way you can do it:
NSURLSession* session = [NSURLSession sessionWithConfiguration:[NSURLSessionConfiguration defaultSessionConfiguration]
delegate:nil
delegateQueue:[NSOperationQueue mainQueue]];
[[session dataTaskWithURL:[NSURL URLWithString:#"http://myurl"]
completionHandler:^(NSData *data, NSURLResponse *response, NSError *error) {
NSError *jsonError = nil;
NSArray* jsonUsers = [NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData:data options:0 error:&jsonError];
if (jsonError) {
NSLog(#"error is %#", [jsonError localizedDescription]);
// Handle Error and return
return;
}
self.userArray = jsonUsers;
[self.userTableView reloadData];
if ([[NSThread currentThread] isMainThread]){
NSLog(#"In main thread--completion handler");
}
else{
NSLog(#"Not in main thread--completion handler");
}
}] resume];
This way you create a session that calls the completion block and any delegate methods on the main thread. You may find this more aesthetically pleasing, but you do lose the advantage of running the "hard work" in the background.

Here is the best way to update UI from blocks and completion handler, and also when you not confrim which thread running your code.
static void runOnMainThread(void (^block)(void))
{
if (!block) return;
if ( [[NSThread currentThread] isMainThread] ) {
block();
} else {
dispatch_async(dispatch_get_main_queue(), block);
}
}
This is static method which will have a block, and will run on main thread, it will act like a
runOnMainThread(^{
// do things here, it will run on main thread, like updating UI
});

You can try this:
[self.userTableView performSelectorOnMainThread:#selector(reloadData) withObject:nil waitUntilDone:NO];

send a notification on completion that will be observed by the table view controller which will then do a reloadData;
this has the advantage that if you later move this download code off to a separate class, e.g. a model object, then no changes are required and also the code can be reused in other projects without making changes

Swift 3.1
DispatchQueue.main.async {
tableView.reloadData()
}

Attach parameters to NSURLSession Delegate Method

I would like to pass a parameter into my delegate to determine to continue or check for cert.
- (void)URLSession:(NSURLSession *)session didReceiveChallenge:(NSURLAuthenticationChallenge *)challenge completionHandler:(void (^)(NSURLSessionAuthChallengeDisposition, NSURLCredential *))completionHandler
{
NSLog(#"Parameter 1 %#", parameter);
}
NSURLSessionDataTask * dataTask = [session dataTaskWithRequest:request completionHandler:^(NSData *data, NSURLResponse *response, NSError *error) {
if ([data length]>0 && error == nil) {
NSDictionary *json = [NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData:data options:0 error:nil];
NSLog(#"%#", json);
resolve(json);
} else if ([data length]==0 && error ==nil) {
NSError *error = [NSError errorWithDomain:#"xxxx" code:400 userInfo:#{#"Error reason": #"No data returned."}];
reject(#"error", #"error description", error);
} else if( error!=nil) {
NSError *error = [NSError errorWithDomain:#"xxxx" code:400 userInfo:#{#"Error reason": #"Invalid request."}];
reject(#"error", #"error description", error);
}
}];
// Start The Task
[dataTask resume];
How can I pass a parameter from my URLSession into this delegate. I looked for a few hours and found nothing online about this. No surprise. Most Obj-c things I find no good references or examples or walkthroughs. Everything is extracted.
My solution was to store and retrieve the cert using SecureKey, if does not exist, just continue on, with the datatask, and it handled the message, authorized or not.
Depending on if the target route needed the cert.

iOS 9 : Get Value From NSURLSessionDataTask In Framework

I had iOS framework which it send JSON to server using NSURLSessionDataTask like this :
NSURLSessionDataTask *postDataTask = [session dataTaskWithRequest:request completionHandler:^(NSData *data, NSURLResponse *response, NSError *error) {
NSHTTPURLResponse* httpResponse = (NSHTTPURLResponse*)response;
int responseStatusCode = [httpResponse statusCode];
if (responseStatusCode == 200)
{
dispatch_async(dispatch_get_main_queue(), ^{
[self.delegate onJsonHttpResult:data andStatusResponse:responseStatusCode];
});
}
else
{
dispatch_async(dispatch_get_main_queue(), ^{
[self.delegate onJsonHttpResult:nil andStatusResponse:responseStatusCode];
});
}
}];
[postDataTask resume];
but whenever I run it, [self.delegate onJsonHttpResult:nil andStatusResponse:responseStatusCode]; not called.
is there any way to get value outside NSURLSessionDataTask when it run inside the framework ?
Thanks
My suggestion is to create and use APIHelperClass with completionBlock.
That will be more easy and affective then use of custom Delegate as per my view.
To create it you can do as follow:
In APIHelperClass.h
#import <Foundation/Foundation.h>
#interface APIHelperClass : NSObject
+(void)apiCallSharedSessionPOST:(NSURLRequest *)request withCompletionHandlar:(void (^) (NSDictionary *dicResult,NSError *error, int status))completionBlock;
#end
And
APIHelperClass.m
#import "APIHelperClass.h"
#implementation APIHelperClass
+(void)apiCallSharedSessionPOST:(NSURLRequest *)request withCompletionHandlar:(void (^) (NSDictionary *dicResult,NSError *error, int status))completionBlock;
NSURLSessionConfiguration *defaultConfigObject = [NSURLSessionConfiguration defaultSessionConfiguration];
NSURLSession *session = [NSURLSession sessionWithConfiguration: defaultConfigObject delegate: nil delegateQueue: [NSOperationQueue mainQueue]];
NSURLSessionDataTask *task = [session dataTaskWithRequest:request
completionHandler:
^(NSData *data, NSURLResponse *response, NSError *error) {
NSHTTPURLResponse* httpResponse = (NSHTTPURLResponse*)response;
int responseStatusCode = (int)[httpResponse statusCode];
if (error!=nil)
{
completionBlock(nil,error,responseStatusCode);
[task suspend];
}
else
{
NSDictionary *dic = [NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData:data options:NSJSONReadingAllowFragments error:&error];
completionBlock(dic,error,responseStatusCode);
[task suspend];
}
}];
[task resume];
}
Then you can use that class for whole App and you don't need to create custom Delegates always.
Then Use that where you want Like :
NSURLRequest *request;
/*
Configure your Request Here
*/
[APIHelperClass apiCallSharedSessionPOST:request withCompletionHandlar:^(NSDictionary *dicResult, NSError *error, int status) {
}];
Thanks for help but I still need delegate to return my value outside framework.
I got issued that whenever I done with NSURLSessionDataTask, delegate is became null, I think it cause that delegate already released after I got response from NSURLSessionDataTask, So I tried to change #property delegate to strong and it work. I can return my value using delegate again. Thanks

iOS 9 Best solution for parsing JSON

I always used this solution when I needed to parse a feed JSON.
https://stackoverflow.com/a/20077594/2829111
But sendAsynchronousRequest is now deprecated and I'm stuck with this code
__block NSDictionary *json;
[[session dataTaskWithURL:request completionHandler:^(NSData *data, NSURLResponse *response, NSError *error) {
// handle response
json = [NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData:data options:0 error:nil];
NSLog(#"Async JSON: %#", json);
[collectionView reloadData];
}] resume];
And with this the reloadData argument takes a long time to execute. I've alredy tried forcing back to the main queue with:
__block NSDictionary *json;
[[session dataTaskWithURL:request completionHandler:^(NSData *data, NSURLResponse *response, NSError *error) {
// handle response
json = [NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData:data options:0 error:nil];
NSLog(#"Async JSON: %#", json);
dispatch_sync(dispatch_queue_create("com.foo.samplequeue", NULL), ^{[collectionView reloadData});
}] resume];
The problem is that the completion handler does not run on the main queue. But all UI updates must happen on the main queue. So dispatch that to the main queue:
[[session dataTaskWithURL:request completionHandler:^(NSData *data, NSURLResponse *response, NSError *error) {
// handle response
NSError *parseError;
NSDictionary *json = [NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData:data options:0 error:&parseError];
// do something with `json`
dispatch_async(dispatch_get_main_queue()), ^{[collectionView reloadData]});
}] resume];
Why don't you try JSONModel library....... it is so simple to use
-(void)getEmployeePerformance:(EmpPerformanceRequest*)request
withSuccesBlock:(succesEmployeePerformanceResponseBlock) successBlock
andFailBlock:(FailResponseBlock) failBlock
{
NSString* weatherUrl = [[ABWebServiceUtil sharedInstance]getEmployeePerformanceURL];
[HTTPClientUtil postDataToWS:weatherUrl parameters:[request toDictionary] WithHeaderDict:nil withBlock:^(AFHTTPRequestOperation *responseObj, NSError *error)
{
if(responseObj.response.statusCode == HTTP_RESPONSE_SUCESS)
{
EmpPerformanceArrayModel *empPerfArrModel;
if(responseObj.responseString)
{
empPerfArrModel = [[EmpPerformanceArrayModel alloc]initWithString:result error:nil];
empPerfArrModel.employeesArray = [empPerformanceModel arrayOfModelsFromDictionaries:empPerfArrModel.employeesArray];
}
if(successBlock)
{
successBlock(responseObj.response.statusCode, empPerfArrModel);
}
}else if (failBlock)
{
failBlock(responseObj.response.statusCode);
}
}];
}
for more detail follow this link...... it will brief you well
https://github.com/icanzilb/JSONModel
Try parsing JSON in connectionDidFinishLoading so you will get response as NSDictionary.
-(void)connectionDidFinishLoading:(NSURLConnection *)connection
{
Class NSJSONSerializationclass = NSClassFromString(#"NSJSONSerialization");
NSDictionary *result;
NSError *error;
if (NSJSONSerializationclass)
{
result = [NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData: responseData options: NSJSONReadingMutableContainers error: &error];
}
// If the webservice response having values we have to call the completionBlockā€¦
if (result)
{
if (self.completionBlock != nil)
{
self.completionBlock(result);
}
}
}

Execute task after another

Recently I started developing for iOS and faced problem which is maybe obvious for you but I couldn't figure it out by myself.
What I'm trying to do is to execute task after another one, using multithreading provided by GCD.
This is my code for fetching JSON (put in class with singleton)
CategoriesStore
- (instancetype)initPrivate {
self = [super init];
if (self) {
[self sessionConf];
NSURLSessionDataTask *getCategories =
[self.session dataTaskWithURL:categoriesURL
completionHandler:^(NSData *data,
NSURLResponse *response,
NSError *error) {
if (error) {
NSLog(#"error - %#",error.localizedDescription);
}
NSHTTPURLResponse *httpResp = (NSHTTPURLResponse *) response;
if (httpResp.statusCode == 200) {
NSError *jsonError;
NSArray *json =
[NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData:data
options:NSJSONReadingMutableContainers
error:&jsonError];
if (!jsonError) {
_allCategories = json;
NSLog(#"allcategories - %#",_allCategories);
}
}
}];
[getCategories resume];
}
return self;
}
Then in ViewController I execute
- (void)fetchCategories {
NSLog(#"before");
dispatch_async(dispatch_get_global_queue(DISPATCH_QUEUE_PRIORITY_HIGH, 0), ^ {
CategoriesStore *categories = [CategoriesStore sharedStore];
dispatch_async(dispatch_get_main_queue(), ^(void) {
_allDirectories = categories.allCategories;
[self.tableView reloadData];
NSLog(#"after");
});
});
}
-fetchCategories is executed in viewDidAppear. The result is usually before, after and then JSON. Obviously what I want to get is before, json after.
I also tried to do this with dispatch_group_notify but didn't workd.
How can I get it working? Why it doesn't wait for first task to be finished?
Thank's for any help!
Regards, Adrian.
I would suggest to define a dedicated method in CategoriesStore that fetches data from remote server and takes callback as an argument:
- (void)fetchDataWithCallback:(void(^)(NSArray *allCategories, NSError* error))callback
{
NSURLSessionDataTask *getCategories =
[self.session dataTaskWithURL:categoriesURL
completionHandler:^(NSData *data,
NSURLResponse *response,
NSError *error) {
if (error) {
NSLog(#"error - %#",error.localizedDescription);
callback(nil, error);
return;
}
NSError *jsonError = nil;
NSArray *json =
[NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData:data
options:NSJSONReadingMutableContainers
error:&jsonError];
if (!jsonError) {
_allCategories = json;
NSLog(#"allcategories - %#",_allCategories);
callback(_allCategories, nil);
} else {
callback(nil, jsonError);
}
}];
[getCategories resume];
}
And you can use it in your ViewController:
- (void)fetchCategories {
[[CategoriesStore sharedStore] fetchDataWithCallback:^(NSArray *allCategories, NSError* error) {
if (error) {
// handle error here
} else {
_allDirectories = allCategories;
[self.tableView reloadData];
}
}]
}
In this way you will reload your table view after data loading & parsing.
You have to wait for the reload data so you may do something like this, another option if you don't want to wait for the whole block and just for the fetch is to use a custom NSLock
dispatch_sync(dispatch_get_main_queue(), {
_allDirectories = categories.allCategories;
[self.tableView reloadData];
}
NSLog(#"after");
I used method suggested by #sgl0v, although it wasn't solution I expected.
Another way to do this is by using notification center and listening for event to occur.

Block not completing in iOS

I'm relatively new to iOS development but I'm working on an application to get a better understanding of development. I'm working with a web service and want to check the credentials a user enters. To do this I am making a simple get request with their credentials and then checking the http status for 200. Here is my code below:
-(BOOL)checkCredentials:(NSString *)username withPassword:(NSString *)password{
NSString *requestString = #"SOME URL";
NSURL *url = [NSURL URLWithString:requestString];
NSURLRequest *req = [NSURLRequest requestWithURL:url];
NSData *userPasswordData = [[NSString stringWithFormat:#"%#:%#", username, password] dataUsingEncoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding];
NSString *base64EncodedCredential = [userPasswordData base64EncodedStringWithOptions:0];
NSString *authString = [NSString stringWithFormat:#"Basic %#", base64EncodedCredential];
NSURLSessionConfiguration *sessionConfig=[NSURLSessionConfiguration defaultSessionConfiguration];
sessionConfig.HTTPAdditionalHeaders=#{#"Authorization":authString};
self.session=[NSURLSession sessionWithConfiguration:sessionConfig];
__block BOOL success = NO;
dispatch_semaphore_t sema = dispatch_semaphore_create(0);
NSURLSessionDataTask *dataTask = [self.session dataTaskWithRequest:req completionHandler:^(NSData *data, NSURLResponse *response, NSError *error) {
if(!error){
NSHTTPURLResponse *httpResp = (NSHTTPURLResponse*) response;
if (httpResp.statusCode == 200) {
success = YES;
}
}
NSMutableDictionary *jsonObject = [NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData:data options:0 error:nil];
NSLog(#"%#", jsonObject);
dispatch_semaphore_signal(sema);
}];
dispatch_semaphore_wait(sema, DISPATCH_TIME_FOREVER);
[dataTask resume];
return success;
}
I was going to use a semaphore to wait for the block to complete so I can check the status code and then return. But first it seems like my code just hangs, and I think that because I don't have a release, but that's not allowed with ARC. I'm not sure why it's hanging. Is there a better way to wait for the block to complete (without a semaphore) so I can return whether my credentials are valid?
Also is there a better way to pass the username and password so that it's not possible for someone to spoof the username and password?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Think simple!
Make your own completionHandler so that you won't deal with the return anymore, the caller will take the responsibility of result verification instead.
There's one thing you need to keep in mind, that if you want to modify anything related to UI (User Interface), you need to dispatch your completion block to main queue or you will get unexpected behavior, see more detail here.
Change your return type to void and add a completion block:
-(void)checkCredentials:(NSString *)username withPassword:(NSString *)password completionHandler:(void (^)(NSData *data, NSURLResponse *response, NSError *error))myCompletion
{
NSString *requestString = #"http://google.com";
NSURL *url = [NSURL URLWithString:requestString];
NSURLRequest *req = [NSURLRequest requestWithURL:url];
NSURLSession *session = [NSURLSession sharedSession];
NSURLSessionDataTask *dataTask = [session dataTaskWithRequest:req completionHandler:^(NSData *data, NSURLResponse *response, NSError *error) {
// Here you return exactly what the NSURLSessionDataTask downloaded
// and pass it to the caller as an another completion block
myCompletion(data, response, error);
}];
[dataTask resume];
}
Caller's code, I assume that self is the caller:
[self checkCredentials:#"" withPassword:#"" completionHandler:^(NSData *data, NSURLResponse *response, NSError *error) {
if(!error){
// Result verification's here
NSHTTPURLResponse *httpResp = (NSHTTPURLResponse*) response;
if (httpResp.statusCode == 200) {
NSLog(#"SUCESS");
}
}
}];
You code stops waiting for a semaphore and [dataTask resume] is never executed.
dispatch_semaphore_wait(sema, DISPATCH_TIME_FOREVER); <=== waits here
[dataTask resume]; <=== never reached
I'd suggest not using the semaphore here. Do the work in your block instead.
As to username/password. If you worry about spoofing then SSL layer on top of HTTP is the answer.
This is a really dangerous pattern, because this call is going to block until the network request completes. If this is on the main thread, your app will stop responding and the watchdog may kill you.
That warning aside, the reason the block doesn't complete is because the network task is never started. You trap on your semaphore before you call resume, so your task never runs. I would also, personally use a dispatch_group to do the waiting.
To make it better, you would need to rewrite it asynchronously. Basically have your app continue to function, maybe disable the inputs, until the call completes, then run a block to re-enable them, or show an error:
// Assume your login button and whatever are exposed as properties here
self.loginButton.enabled = NO;
NSURLSessionDataTask *dataTask = [self.session dataTaskWithRequest:req completionHandler:^(NSData *data, NSURLResponse *response, NSError *error) {
if(!error){
NSHTTPURLResponse *httpResp = (NSHTTPURLResponse*) response;
if (httpResp.statusCode == 200) {
success = YES;
}
}
NSMutableDictionary *jsonObject = [NSJSONSerialization JSONObjectWithData:data options:0 error:nil];
NSLog(#"%#", jsonObject);
// Need to be back on the main queue, the call is complete
self.loginButton.enabled = YES;
}];
[dataTask resume];
Or, just to keep it the way you have it, but resolve the immediate issue, re-order your trap so that it happens after the task resumes:
[dataTask resume];
dispatch_semaphore_wait(sema, DISPATCH_TIME_FOREVER); // might want to time out here instead of waiting forever
return success;
