I have two ViewControllers. The first has UITableview that I push data from to the second ViewController. Whenever I go back, the first ViewController loses its properties - Its navigationbar background disappears and for example the sidebar menu does not work either. Is there any way I could reload it while pushing the back button?

Sounds like you are probably doing your setup in viewWillAppear instead of viewWillLoad. This means that when the view will appear on return, the setup is happening again and perhaps leaving you in an unexpected state. Put breakpoints in your view controller delegate methods and see what order things are being called in and why.

From an initial ViewController I've modally presented a second ViewController using a ShowDetail segue in the storyboard and a performSegueWithIdentifier: method call. The problem is when I dismiss this modal ViewController with the method dismissViewControllerAnimated: the initial ViewController is reinstantiated calling the viewDidLoad again.
I've tried using a Push segue instead of the Show Detail and the initial ViewController keeps allocated in the background as it should.
What might be going on? The initial ViewController never even calls the memory warning method.

First of all, if it is a ShowDetail, it is not a modal view. Do try to see which is your case.
Modal segues can carry information backwards, but are a bit more complicated than push ones.
If you are modally presenting it, you should use Present Modally instead of a ShowDetail.
A modal presentation will always take the top view position in the stack, and Show Detail does as well, depending in how your views are set. For instance, if you have a detail view in stack, IT will be replaced rather than the stack top view.
Try choosing up to a specific segue, I particularly recommend modal assuming you need more than simple pushes (Or the Show would have closed the problem, being the equivalent to the previous deprecated push. If you only need something simple, Show is the way)
Now we've cleared this, what probably is happening is that the view is being removes since Show Detail replaces views instead of pushing them, and it has to perform init again.

The solution then should be not to lose the view when replacing, and reinitializing it, what dismissViewControllerAnimated: does. If you use unwind segues, though, the view should be replaced BUT retained by ARC.

As someone who usually used separate xibs in the past I thought I'd give storyboard a go as it seemed a lot simpler to use and much easier to develop with. I've been writing an application where the essential set up is this:
At the top of all this is a UINavigationController (first level). Then I have Multiple UIViewControllers (second level) with buttons in them which you can tap to switch between the second level UIViewControllers.
However a problem occurs when I start switching between the second level UIViewControllers. I first thought this was an initialisation problem with the NSMutableArrays because in my code I have a NSTimer set to loop periodically and found when I set a breakpoint during it, when I went forward to the next timer tick event there appeared to be different instances of the same NSMutableArrays and it seemed a gamble to try and insert new values into these array with it sometimes working, sometimes not (as it may or may not insert into the correct instance).
Then, looking at the memory usage under Debug Navigator I found the issue. Each time I "switched" between the UIViewControllers a new UIViewController was being initiated, along with all new variables.
The code I am using to switch between them is
-(void) perform {
[[[self sourceViewController] navigationController] pushViewController:[self destinationViewController] animated:NO];
}
Or essentially a push segue transition. This also explains why when I tried to switch back to my view, the data on that view was lost as it is a complete new view.
Does anyone know how to switch between multiple ones of these UIViewControllers (say 5) essentially like a UITabViewController would except without the tab bar being present?
First option you can do this: You can use a tabbarcontroller for switching viewcontroller and hidden the tabbar. Then on buttonclick setthe tabbar index.
Second option you can do this: Create one more view controller and in this viewcontroller subview the all switching viewController and when you want to switch viewcontroller just bring that viewcontroller view to front by delegate.
Do you need the navigation bar and other features provided by your top level navigation controller?
If not, you could use a UIPageViewController instead.
You set up all your second level view controllers and then just have to tell the page view controller which one to display.
If you implement the associated delegate methods, it will automatically provide swipe gestures to switch between them and nice animations to get them on and off screen.
You can also get it to put a UIPageControl at the bottom showing a dot for each VC with the dot for the current VC highlighted.
I got two viewControllers using a navigation bar. The first viewController displays some data I change on the second viewController.
So if I load the second viewController, a back button appears in the NavBar and I can change my values (and they are stored, I used the debugger). My problem is, after hitting the backButton to come to my firstView Controller, it does not call it's viewDidLoad method. It's clear, that there are no updated values at all, when this function is not called.
At the first start, the viewDidLoad method is called and does what I want it to do. After going back and forth between the viewControllers the method is not called again.
Any solutions?

This method is called every time the view appears, it is probably not defined by default:
-(void)viewDidAppear:(BOOL)animated
{

But the update code (like [[self view] setNeedsDisplay];) in viewWillAppear.
To make it clear: viewDidLoad is called when your view is loaded. This happens at the first time the view is going to be displayed. When you then navigate to the next view the first view can (depending on your code) still be loaded. Therefore when you navigate back to that view viewDidLoad won't be called because the view is still there.
But every time the view is going to be shown (for example when you navigate back to this view) the method viewWillAppear and viewDidAppear will be called.

ViewDidLoad method will get called when there is view controller allocation-initialization happens. In the case of moving back in navigation controller, it is not creating any new view controllers, it is reusing previous references from navigation stack.
Hence viewDidLoad will not get called. As your view controller is already in memory stack. So it will just make the view to reappear on windows and it will call viewWillAppear respectively.
which method will be called when i switch between tabs in tabBarController

You can use the UITabBarControllerDelegate method tabBarController:didSelectViewController::

The method viewWillDisappear: is triggered each time you are about to leave the current view controller (and hence the current tab) and viewWillAppear: is triggered each time a view is about to be displayed.

This is pretty old, but it does come up on Google and is linked to from another answer. So, I thought I'd update it.
If your UITableBarController is displaying a UIViewController (i.e. its view) then you have to check the ViewController methods that fire when a view disappears and appears. You could use viewWillDisappear to find out if your view is about to be switched away from, and viewWillAppear to test if your view just got switched back to. Notice, the TabBarController typically keeps the ViewControllers loaded, just their views are moved out and in. The problem with using the TabBarDelegate method is that you need to know the name of your viewController, which makes that a dependency. Change the name and it will probably break with xcode's poor ability to rename Class String representations. Avoid it. Besides you don't want a bunch of conditional junk checking to see if your tabbar just loaded a particular tab unless you cannot avoid it. The other thing to notice is that if a particular tab presents a TableViewController you may have to resort to other techniques if you need data in the cells to change in response to being switched away from. I'm using willMoveToWindow:(UIWindow *)newWindow to get notified in the UITableViewCell case when the view goes away. There's probably a better way.
I have a simple iPhone app based on a navigation controller. There are two view controllers, VC1 and VC2, both with table views. VC2 also has a custom table cell. When a user selects a row in VC1, VC2 is pushed on to the stack. When the user selects the back button it's removed. Typical navigation stuff.
The problem I have is that the data in the cells in VC2 persists when the back button is pressed, so that when the user selects a different row in VC1, VC2 is pushed back on to the stack with the 'old' data in the cells, before the methods in VC2 reload the data.
I want to make sure that the data in the table in VC is removed every time the back button is pressed. I've tried releasing the tableview using viewWillDisappear, but it's not working. What's the recommended way of dealing with this situation? I've looked at the docs but it's not obvious (to me at least).
Try out this code snippet in viewWillDissapear or dealloc method.

This might work.
I've used this technique several times since I asked the original question. As I mentioned in my comment to #Aditya, I've found that the easiest way to deal with this is to use viewWillDisappear to hide the tableview with the 'old' data, and when the user navigates back to the page, wait until the 'new' data is loaded into the table before making the tableview visible again.
