has and belongs to many rails 4 - ruby-on-rails

When I create a new group in my application I want the logged in user(Devise) to be associated with automatically. More users can be added to the group later on aswell. One user can have many groups. One group can have many users.
How do I associate the logged in user on creation?
My group.rb:
class Group < ActiveRecord::Base
has_and_belongs_to_many :users
has_and_belongs_to_many :clients
end
groups_controller.rb (create)
def create
#group = Group.new(group_params)
#group.users.id = current_user.id
respond_to do |format|
if #group.save
format.html { redirect_to #group, notice: 'Group was successfully created.' }
format.json { render action: 'show', status: :created, location: #group }
else
format.html { render action: 'new' }
format.json { render json: #group.errors, status: :unprocessable_entity }
end
end
end
And group_params from groups_controller.rb
def group_params
params.require(:group).permit(:name, { :user_ids => [] },)
end
My schema.rb contains:
create_table "groups", force: true do |t|
t.string "name"
t.string "background"
t.integer "clocktype"
t.datetime "created_at"
t.datetime "updated_at"
end
create_table "groups_users", id: false, force: true do |t|
t.integer "group_id"
t.integer "user_id"
end
add_index "groups_users", ["group_id"], name: "index_groups_users_on_group_id"
add_index "groups_users", ["user_id"], name: "index_groups_users_on_user_id"
create_table "users", force: true do |t|
t.string "first_name"
t.string "last_name"
t.string "email"
t.string "password"
t.string "avatar"
t.datetime "created_at"
t.datetime "updated_at"
t.string "encrypted_password", default: "", null: false
t.string "reset_password_token"
t.datetime "reset_password_sent_at"
t.datetime "remember_created_at"
t.integer "sign_in_count", default: 0
t.datetime "current_sign_in_at"
t.datetime "last_sign_in_at"
t.string "current_sign_in_ip"
t.string "last_sign_in_ip"
end

Following would add the current user to the created group:
# In controller after #group.save
#group.users << current_user
See the association method docs for more info.

#group.user_ids = [current_user.id]

Try this:-
#group = Group.new(group_params)
#group.users = User.where(:id => current_user.id)
#group.save

rails 4 undefined method 'name' for nil:NilClass - category

I want to display an image according to a category name. My images are in the app/assets/images

Now, I have this error (again...) undefined method 'name' for nil:NilClass.

EDIT here is the error message:
Looks like you may have created at least one Tuto object without a category_id at some point and it's still in your (development?) database. I'm guessing you don't want that, in which case I usually wipe my development database with rake db:reset. Just make sure you're executing commands in development if you do that of course. In the future, you may want to validate the presence of category_id on your Tuto model as well.

Can't access another model through Active Record - nil class?

I'm very new to ruby and to rails.
I've been stuck with this for days. I think I should be able to access a variable in a controller of one model, that is stored in another model easily?
I have four models: User - (1-1) - Profile - (1-M) - Appointment - (1-1) - Option.
Options contains pricePerPerson and discount for an appointment. Appointments contains, among others, numPeople.
I want to access the figure in the Options model for the pricePerPerson (and discount, if appropriate) and use it in the view show for Appointments.
(# <%= appointment.price = Option.pricePerPerson * numPeople %>)
So far I haven't been able to do this and have had to resort to hard-coding a price per person. I would rather not hard-code that, if possible.
So far, the system is saying that there is nothing in the database(nil class for price. I don't know why as I have entered a figure in this. It is skipping to the "else" section of the method. (Basically, it keeps returning 6, no matter what)
Appointments.rb Model:
def calculatePrice
if option.present?
return option.pricePerPerson*numpeople
else
return 6
end
end
Appointments controller:
def show
#appointment = Appointment.find(params[:id])
end
def new

I agree with the comments. It's likely that you can simplify your database schema.
However, should you want to stick to your schema and should you want to be able to debug your code by yourself (in simple cases), I suggest you to install the following gems in you Gemfile. When there's something wrong in your code, it will help you understand where and will display a console allowing you to test some new code.
group :development, :test do
gem 'binding_of_caller'
gem 'better_errors'
gem 'pry-byebug'
end

Rails : undefined method `user_id=' for nil:NilClass

I am running into a problem with the Comments controller in my blog. Every time I tried to create a new comment I have an undefined method "user_id=" for nil:NilClass, and it doesn't create the comment. It happens the same when I try to destroy one, I have undefined method "comments" for #<User:0x007fe2c872f968>.
When I restart the server, the comment I created shows up, but it doesn't happen the same with the destroy method.
I am not sure what is happening here, I have to be doing something wrong with the user but I cannot find where is the problem.

All simple, you have two different instance objects. Also, You have already comment_params method, just use that one for secure it.
def create
#post = Post.find(params[:post_id])
#comment = #post.comments.create(comment_params.merge(user_id: current_user.id))
redirect_to post_path(#post)
end
try:
#comments = #post.comments.create(params[:comment].permit(:name, :body))
just replace #comments with #comment
Regarding your create method. You have two problems:
You don't have #comment instance variable defined (you have #comments).
You don't have comment local variable or method.
comments_controller.rb
class CommentsController < ApplicationController
def create
#post = Post.find(params[:post_id])
# |-- HERE
#comment = #post.comments.create(params[:comment].permit(:name, :body))
#comment.user_id = current_user.id
#comment.save # <== HERE ==
redirect_to post_path(#post)
end
end
As for destroy, you might have forgot to add has_many :comments associated to your User model.
class User < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :comments
end
class Comment < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :user
end

Connecting two models in many-to-many relationship

I have a problem.
I want to get all matches in my player#show where player was engaged. So I did a many-to-many relationship.
Match model:
class Match < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :match_schedules
has_many :players, through: :match_schedules
end
Player model:
class Player < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :match_schedules
has_many :matches, through: :match_schedules
has_attached_file :avatar, :styles => { :medium => "300x300>", :thumb => "100x100>" }, :default_url => "/images/:style/missing.png"
validates_attachment_content_type :avatar, :content_type => /\Aimage\/.*\Z/
end
and my match_schedule model:
class MatchSchedule < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :player
belongs_to :match
end
If i do something like this in rails console:
p = Player.find 1
m = p.matches.new
m.playerA = “leo”
m.playerB = “cris”
p.save
It works, i can display loop with name:
<% #player.matches.each do |match| %>
<%= match.playerA %>
<% end %>
Problem is that i don't really know how I can connect matches to player in my new form, in browser. Already i have something like this:
Players_helper:
module PlayersHelper
def player_hash(players)
hash = Hash.new
players.each do |player|
hash["#{player.first_name}" + " " + "#{player.last_name}"] = player.first_name + player.last_name
end
hash
end
end
and _form:
<div class="form-inputs">
<%= f.select :playerA, options_for_select(player_hash(#abc)) %>
<%= f.select :playerB, options_for_select(player_hash(#abc)) %>
<%= f.input :PlayerApoints %>
<%= f.input :PlayerBpoints %>
</div>
Matches controller for new and create method looks like:
def new
#match = Match.new
#abc = Player.all
end
def create
#match = Match.new(match_params)
respond_to do |format|
if #match.save
format.html { redirect_to #match, notice: 'Match was successfully created.' }
format.json { render :show, status: :created, location: #match }
else
format.html { render :new }
format.json { render json: #match.errors, status: :unprocessable_entity }
end
end
end
And my schema.rb:
ActiveRecord::Schema.define(version: 20150706185030) do
create_table "match_schedules", force: :cascade do |t|
t.integer "match_id"
t.integer "player_id"
t.datetime "created_at", null: false
t.datetime "updated_at", null: false
end
create_table "matches", force: :cascade do |t|
t.string "playerA"
t.string "playerB"
t.integer "PlayerApoints"
t.integer "PlayerBpoints"
t.datetime "created_at", null: false
t.datetime "updated_at", null: false
end
create_table "players", force: :cascade do |t|
t.string "first_name"
t.string "last_name"
t.datetime "created_at", null: false
t.datetime "updated_at", null: false
t.string "avatar_file_name"
t.string "avatar_content_type"
t.integer "avatar_file_size"
t.datetime "avatar_updated_at"
end
create_table "users", force: :cascade do |t|
t.string "email", default: "", null: false
t.string "encrypted_password", default: "", null: false
t.string "reset_password_token"
t.datetime "reset_password_sent_at"
t.datetime "remember_created_at"
t.integer "sign_in_count", default: 0, null: false
t.datetime "current_sign_in_at"
t.datetime "last_sign_in_at"
t.string "current_sign_in_ip"
t.string "last_sign_in_ip"
t.datetime "created_at"
t.datetime "updated_at"
end
You left out your match_params hash, so I have to do some guessing but something along the lines of:
in your Match class:
class Match < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :match_schedules
has_many :players, through: :match_schedules
accepts_nested_attributes_for :match_schedules
end
in your controller:
def new
#match = Match.new
#match.match_schedules.build
#abc = Player.all
end
def create
#match = Match.new(match_params)
respond_to do |format|
if #match.save
format.html { redirect_to #match, notice: 'Match was successfully created.' }
format.json { render :show, status: :created, location: #match }
else
format.html { render :new }
format.json { render json: #match.errors, status: :unprocessable_entity }
end
end
end
in your match_params whitelist you'll need to add:
..., :player_ids => [])
since it is an array you need to put it after the other params.
You will also have to modify your view code. Basically you want to return a match_shedules_attributes => {player_ids => [1,2]} this gives you the ability to tell the MatchSchedule table the ID of each player associated with that match_id. You can do this with a fields_for inside the form_for block. See this http://guides.rubyonrails.org/form_helpers.html
So in the create action in the Match controller it should also save two records in the MatchSchedule table, one with each player's id and the id of that match.

not able to get user edits articles in ruby on rails

I am trying to get user who edits article in blog. I am able to get user who create article but got stuck while getting user who edits it. I tried with <%= #aritcle_update_user.username unless #article.user.nil? %> putting it in articles/show.html.erb(basically I am trying to show editing user on show page of articles). I have put this
def update
#article = Article.find(params[:id])
if #article.update_attributes(params[:article])
flash.notice = "Article '#{#article.title}' Updated!"
redirect_to article_path(#article)
#article.user_id = current_user.id
else
render 'edit'
end
end
in update action of article. Here I tried with #article.user_id = current_user.id and used it in show page of article but It throws me

Please help me to get user who edits article.If you need more code to pasted, please let me know.
You are setting #article.user_id = current_user.id in ArticlesController#update but trying to access that value in view of ArticlesController#show. that will not work.
so, to see the value #article.user_id in show.html.erb, you need to set it in corresponding controller ArticlesController#show like this:
def show
#article.user_id = current_user.id
end
if it still doesn't work, do post your model relationships as well, along with full error message & steps to reproduce that error
