Is there some way to get UIKeyboard size programmatically. 216.0f height and 162.0f height in landscape.
Following seem to be deprecated. Is there some way that works without any warning in both 3.0 iPhone OS SDK and 4.0 iPhone OS SDK to do this..
CGSize keyBoardSize = [[[note userInfo]
objectForKey:UIKeyboardBoundsUserInfoKey] CGRectValue].size;
You can get the keyboard size from the userInfo dictionary using the UIKeyboardFrameBeginUserInfoKey and the UIKeyboardFrameEndUserInfoKey instead.
These two keys return a NSValue instance containing a CGRect that holds the position and size of the keyboard at both the start and end points of the keyboard's show/hide animation.
Edit:
To clarify, the userInfo dictionary comes from an NSNotification instance. It's passed to your method that you register with an observer. For example,
- (void)someMethodWhereYouSetUpYourObserver
{
// This could be in an init method.
[[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self
selector:#selector(myNotificationMethod:)
name:UIKeyboardDidShowNotification
object:nil];
}
- (void)myNotificationMethod:(NSNotification*)notification
{
NSDictionary* keyboardInfo = [notification userInfo];
NSValue* keyboardFrameBegin = [keyboardInfo valueForKey:UIKeyboardFrameBeginUserInfoKey];
CGRect keyboardFrameBeginRect = [keyboardFrameBegin CGRectValue];
}
Edit 2:
Also, please don't forget to remove yourself as an observer in your dealloc method! This is to avoid a crash that would occur when the notification center tries to notify your object after its been freed.
You should use the UIKeyboardWillChangeFrameNotification instead, because some international keyboards, like the Chinese keyboard, will change frames during use. Also make sure to convert the CGRect into the proper view, for landscape use.
//some method like viewDidLoad, where you set up your observer.
[[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self selector:#selector(keyboardWillChange:) name:UIKeyboardWillChangeFrameNotification object:nil];
- (void)keyboardWillChange:(NSNotification *)notification {
CGRect keyboardRect = [notification.userInfo[UIKeyboardFrameEndUserInfoKey] CGRectValue];
keyboardRect = [self.view convertRect:keyboardRect fromView:nil]; //this is it!
}
Here's how I finally made works. I combined suggestions and codes from different answers.

I need to move a keyboard up and down. I have many subviews with many uiTextfields. These subviews has one superview and this superview is in the scroll view.
I can't move up a view using below code:
- (void) keyboardWasShown:(NSNotification *)notification{
NSDictionary *info = [notification userInfo];
CGSize kbSize = [[info objectForKey:UIKeyboardFrameBeginUserInfoKey]CGRectValue].size;
UIEdgeInsets contentInsets = UIEdgeInsetsMake(0.0, 0.0, kbSize.height, 0);
self.Scroll_view.contentInset = contentInsets;
self.Scroll_view.scrollIndicatorInsets = contentInsets;
}
- (void) keyboardWillBeHidden:(NSNotification *)notification{
UIEdgeInsets contentInsets = UIEdgeInsetsZero;
self.Scroll_view.contentInset = contentInsets;
self.Scroll_view.scrollIndicatorInsets = contentInsets;
}
This code working fine when i place all the UITextfields in the ScrollView(Not into the subviews), But i need to do with subview and also move keyboard up and down.
How can i move a keyboard up and down while press keyboard Next/Return key?
Try This:
- (void)animateViewUpToTargetYOrigin:(CGFloat)yValue
{
[[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserverForName:UIKeyboardDidChangeFrameNotification object:nil queue:[NSOperationQueue mainQueue] usingBlock:^(NSNotification *note) {
CGFloat yOrigin = 0;
CGFloat keyboardYOrigin = [[[note userInfo] objectForKey:UIKeyboardFrameEndUserInfoKey] CGRectValue].origin.y;
if (yValue > keyboardYOrigin) {
yOrigin = yValue - keyboardYOrigin;
}
[UIView animateWithDuration:0.3f animations:^{
self.view.frame = CGRectMake(self.frame.origin.x, -yOrigin, self.frame.size.width, self.frame.size.height);
}];
}];
Using this code you only need to call this method in textfield didbeginediting, and pass the yOrigin(textfield)+height(textField) as y value in it.
If you textFields are in Scrollview or any sub view convert their frame values in respect to self.view before sending Y value.
E.g:
CGRect textFieldRectWithRespectToSelfView = [textField.superview convertRect:textField.frame toView:self.view];
[self.view animateViewUpToTargetYOrigin: textFieldRectWithRespectToSelfView.orgin.y + textFieldRectWithRespectToSelfView.size.height];
When you call [textField resignFirstResponder], self.view comes back to its original position. This happens because the UIKeyboardDidChangeFrameNotification always keeps listening to keyboard frame changes.
I do have a demo project in github as an example please refer to it:
https://github.com/subhajitregor/ViewMoveUpExample
In viewDidLoad method
- (void)viewDidLoad {
[super viewDidLoad];
[[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self
selector:#selector(keyboardWillShow:)
name:UIKeyboardWillShowNotification
object:nil];
[[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self
selector:#selector(keyboardWillHide:)
name:UIKeyboardWillHideNotification
object:nil];
}
- (void)keyboardWillHide:(NSNotification *)aNotification
{
// the keyboard is hiding reset the table's height
NSTimeInterval animationDuration =
[[[aNotification userInfo] objectForKey:UIKeyboardAnimationDurationUserInfoKey] doubleValue];
CGRect frame = self.view.frame;
frame.origin.y += 150;
[UIView beginAnimations:#"ResizeForKeyboard" context:nil];
[UIView setAnimationDuration:animationDuration];
self.view.frame = frame;
[UIView commitAnimations];
}
- (void)keyboardWillShow:(NSNotification *)aNotification
{
// the keyboard is showing so resize the table's height
NSTimeInterval animationDuration =
[[[aNotification userInfo] objectForKey:UIKeyboardAnimationDurationUserInfoKey] doubleValue];
CGRect frame = self.view.frame;
frame.origin.y -= 150;
[UIView beginAnimations:#"ResizeForKeyboard" context:nil];
[UIView setAnimationDuration:animationDuration];
self.view.frame = frame;
[UIView commitAnimations];
}
I have an application on iPhone who has much content in viewcontroller. Generally the main content is form. My problem is that I put up keyboard and want to type some value to form fields much of content is invisible. I want to scroll this content when keyboard appear. How can I do this?
My view does'n have scroll view however I tried do this but it don't works.
All hints I found so far concern how to put up used textbox, but this is not my assumption.
This is what i did, I changed the top constraint when keyboard rises up and down like this-
in viewDidLoad call this method-
[self observeKeyboard];
#pragma mark- Keyboard Listen Methods
- (void)observeKeyboard {
[[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self selector:#selector(keyboardWillShow:) name:UIKeyboardWillChangeFrameNotification object:nil];
[[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self selector:#selector(keyboardWillHide:) name:UIKeyboardWillHideNotification object:nil];
}
- (void)keyboardWillShow:(NSNotification *)notification {
NSDictionary *info = [notification userInfo];
NSValue *kbFrame = [info objectForKey:UIKeyboardFrameEndUserInfoKey];
NSTimeInterval animationDuration = [[info objectForKey:UIKeyboardAnimationDurationUserInfoKey] doubleValue];
CGRect keyboardFrame = [kbFrame CGRectValue];
CGFloat height = keyboardFrame.size.height;
self.COnstraintTopViewVertical.constant=(value of constant)-height;
[UIView animateWithDuration:animationDuration animations:^{
[self.view layoutIfNeeded];
}];
}
- (void)keyboardWillHide:(NSNotification *)notification {
NSDictionary *info = [notification userInfo];
NSTimeInterval animationDuration = [[info objectForKey:UIKeyboardAnimationDurationUserInfoKey] doubleValue];
self.ConstraintTopViewVertical.constant=reset value;
[UIView animateWithDuration:animationDuration animations:^{
[self.view layoutIfNeeded];
}];
}
You can programmatically change position in the view upon keyboard appearance with the following code:
func keyboardWasShown(notification: NSNotification) {
UIView.animateWithDuration(0.3, animations: { () -> Void in
self.setContentOffset(CGPoint(x: setXOffsetHere, y: setYOffsetHere), animated: true)
})
}
This code will transition the view to the coordinates you specify in .setContentOffset call after keyboard appearance. You still have to get the coordinates, but usually they are pretty straightforward to get from storyboard.
Put all your views in a scroll view
Set an auto layout constraint from the bottom of the scroll view to the bottom of the superview
In viewWillAppear
[[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self
selector:#selector(keyboardWillChangeFrame:)
name:UIKeyboardWillChangeFrameNotification object:nil];
Handle the KB notification
- (void)keyboardWillChangeFrame:(NSNotification*)aNotification
{
CGRect kbFrame = [aNotification.userInfo[UIKeyboardFrameEndUserInfoKey] CGRectValue];
CGRect kbWindowIntersectionFrame = CGRectIntersection(self.view.window.bounds, kbFrame);
[UIView animateWithDuration:[aNotification.userInfo[UIKeyboardAnimationDurationUserInfoKey] doubleValue] animations:^{
self.scrollVBottomConstraint.constant = kbWindowIntersectionFrame.size.height;
[self.view layoutIfNeeded];
}];
}
what i got from your question is: you are using textfield on UIView which is not on the scrollview, now you have to scroll the UIView when keyboard appears. just do following stuff.
-Give the tag to your textfield.
-suppose tag you have given is 4545646
-do not forgot to assign delegate to your textfield (it will execute below delegate method when you start to edit)
- (void)textFieldDidBeginEditing:(UITextField *)textField
{
if (textField.tag == 4545646) {
UIView *contanerView = [self.view viewWithTag:5556466];
[UIView animateWithDuration:0.5 animations:^{
contanerView.frame = CGRectMake(self.view.frame.origin.x+1, -85, self.view.frame.size.width, self.view.frame.size.height-9);
}];
}
}
Change the frame as per your requirement.
and
- (void)textFieldDidEndEditing:(UITextField *)textField {
if (textField.tag == 4545646) {
[textField resignFirstResponder];
UIView *contanerView = [self.view viewWithTag:5556466];
[UIView animateWithDuration:0.5 animations:^{
contanerView.frame = CGRectMake(self.view.frame.origin.x+1, self.view.frame.origin.y, self.view.frame.size.width, self.view.frame.size.height);
}];
}
In viewDidAppear add the following notifications
[[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self selector:#selector(keyBoardShown:) name:UIKeyboardWillShowNotification object:nil];
[[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self selector:#selector(keyBoardDismiss:) name:UIKeyboardWillHideNotification object:nil];
and in keyBoardShown method get the keyboard height
- (void)keyBoardShown:(NSNotification*)notification
{
if(self.view.frame.origin.y>=0)
{
NSDictionary* keyboardInfo = [notification userInfo];
NSValue* keyboardFrameBegin = [keyboardInfo valueForKey:UIKeyboardFrameBeginUserInfoKey];
CGRect keyboardFrameBeginRect = [keyboardFrameBegin CGRectValue];
// NSLog(#"hihi : %f",keyboardFrameBeginRect.size.height);
keyBoardHeight = keyboardFrameBeginRect.size.height-yDeault+50;
if (keyBoardHeight>0) {
[UIView beginAnimations:nil context:nil];
[UIView setAnimationDuration:0.5];
[UIView setAnimationCurve:UIViewAnimationCurveEaseOut];
self.view.frame = CGRectMake(self.view.frame.origin.x, (self.view.frame.origin.y-keyBoardHeight), self.view.frame.size.width, self.view.frame.size.height);
[UIView commitAnimations];
}
}
}
in keyBoardDismiss setback the mainview y coordinate to previous value
-(void)keyBoardDismiss:(NSNotification*)notification{
if(self.view.frame.origin.y<0){
[UIView beginAnimations:nil context:nil];
[UIView setAnimationDuration:0.5];
[UIView setAnimationCurve:UIViewAnimationCurveEaseOut];
self.view.frame = CGRectMake(self.view.frame.origin.x, (self.view.frame.origin.y+keyBoardHeight), self.view.frame.size.width, self.view.frame.size.height);
[UIView commitAnimations];
}
}
here yDeault is textfield y coordinate value
yDeault= screenHeight-textField.frame.origin.y+textField.frame.size.height;
Once the keyboard is shown main view will be moved up and once keyboard is dismissed main view will be moved back to the original position
OK. I done this. I need to just add scroll view but in my app probably I have to reconstruct all my view.
No need to add scrollview. Directly you can do this. You can change the self.view.frame without the need of scrollview.
I have tried some solutions that are out there, but they do not work they way I need them to.
I have quite a long text field that will have several paragraphs inside of it. When a user taps on the text field, their keyboard pops up and basically blocks about half the text that's already there and the keyboard prevents them from making any additions to the text field, since the user cannot see what they are typing.
I have tried modifying the frame definition to go above the keyboard, but since the textfield is so long, the user can still go below the keyboard if they add enough text. Wrapping the text view inside a scroll view doesn't do much either.
I am using swift + xcode 6
Here is a screenshot of what I am talking about:
Assuming you're using the autolayout, you can do the following :
In the .h, define a NSLayouConstraint :
#property (weak, nonatomic) IBOutlet NSLayoutConstraint *keyboardHeight;
In the .m :
- (void)viewDidLoad
{
[super viewDidLoad];
[[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self selector:#selector(keyboardWillShow:) name:UIKeyboardWillChangeFrameNotification object:nil];
[[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self selector:#selector(keyboardWillHide:) name:UIKeyboardWillHideNotification object:nil];
}
- (void)keyboardWillShow:(NSNotification *)notification
{
NSDictionary *info = [notification userInfo];
NSValue *kbFrame = [info objectForKey:UIKeyboardFrameEndUserInfoKey];
NSTimeInterval animationDuration = [[info objectForKey:UIKeyboardAnimationDurationUserInfoKey] doubleValue];
CGRect keyboardFrame = [kbFrame CGRectValue];
self.keyboardHeight.constant = keyboardFrame.size.height;
[UIView animateWithDuration:animationDuration animations:^{
[self.view layoutIfNeeded];
}];
}
- (void)keyboardWillHide:(NSNotification *)notification
{
NSDictionary *info = [notification userInfo];
NSTimeInterval animationDuration = [[info objectForKey:UIKeyboardAnimationDurationUserInfoKey] doubleValue];
self.keyboardHeight.constant = 20;
[UIView animateWithDuration:animationDuration animations:^{
[self.view layoutIfNeeded];
}];
}
Then link keyboardHeight with the vertical autolayout constraint between the UITextView and the bottom of the view :
Listen for the UIKeyboardWillShowNotification and UIKeyboardWillHideNotification to adjust the size of your text view as is appropriate. You can get the dimensions of the keyboard via the UIKeyboardFrameEndUserInfoKey of the user dictionary.
E.g. a Swift version of Apple's code:
func keyboardWasShown(aNotifcation: NSNotification) {
let info = aNotifcation.userInfo as NSDictionary?
let rectValue = info![UIKeyboardFrameBeginUserInfoKey] as NSValue
let kbSize = rectValue.CGRectValue().size
let contentInsets = UIEdgeInsetsMake(0, 0, kbSize.height, 0)
textView.contentInset = contentInsets
textView.scrollIndicatorInsets = contentInsets
// optionally scroll
let aRect = textView.superview!.frame
aRect.size.height -= kbSize.height
let targetRect = CGRectMake(0, 0, 10, 10) // get a relevant rect in the text view
if !aRect.contains(targetRect.origin) {
textView.scrollRectToVisible(targetRect, animated: true)
}
}
I trying to push my view up when the keyboard is showing (it overlays data I want the user to see while he's typing. I'm using this code:
KBKeyboardHandler.h:
#protocol KBKeyboardHandlerDelegate;
#interface KBKeyboardHandler : NSObject
- (id)init;
// Put 'weak' instead of 'assign' if you use ARC
#property(nonatomic, assign) id<KBKeyboardHandlerDelegate> delegate;
#property(nonatomic) CGRect frame;
#end

#import "KBKeyboardHandler.h"
#import "KBKeyboardHandlerDelegate.h"

name:UIKeyboardWillShowNotification
object:nil];
[[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self
selector:#selector(keyboardWillHide:)

return self;
}
- (void)dealloc
{
[[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] removeObserver:self];

void (^action)(void) = ^{
[self.delegate keyboardSizeChanged:delta];
};
[UIView animateWithDuration:duration

completion:nil];
}
#end
KBKeyboardHandlerDelegate.h:
#protocol KBKeyboardHandlerDelegate
- (void)keyboardSizeChanged:(CGSize)delta;

Sample MyViewController.h:
#interface MyViewController : UIViewController<KBKeyboardHandlerDelegate>
...
#end
Sample MyViewController.m:
#implementation MyViewController
{
KBKeyboardHandler *keyboard;
}
- (void)dealloc
{
keyboard.delegate = nil;
[keyboard release];
[super dealloc];
}
- (void)viewDidLoad
{
[super viewDidLoad];
keyboard = [[KBKeyboardHandler alloc] init];
keyboard.delegate = self;
}
- (void)viewDidUnload
{
[super viewDidUnload];
keyboard.delegate = nil;
[keyboard release];
keyboard = nil;
}
- (void)keyboardSizeChanged:(CGSize)delta
{
// Resize / reposition your views here. All actions performed here
// will appear animated.
// delta is the difference between the previous size of the keyboard
// and the new one.
// For instance when the keyboard is shown,
// delta may has width=768, height=264,
// when the keyboard is hidden: width=-768, height=-264.
// Use keyboard.frame.size to get the real keyboard size.
// Sample:
CGRect frame = self.view.frame;
frame.size.height -= delta.height;
self.view.frame = frame;
}
That I've found here. I'm trying to figure out why my view isn't pushing up. The keyboard is showing and keyboardSizeChanged is fired up but the view doesn't move. I opened a new project and copied the KBKeyboardHandler and delegate files to it, implemented the code and in the new project it works fine so I know for a fact that it's something in my original project that is messed up. Any idea what it can be?
If you are not using a UITableView use UIScrollView as the parent view of your elements and add the code below
Adjust as needed,
You will need a NSArray of NSObjects, I called mine scrollToObjects and in viewDidLoad add the elements to the array that would need scrolling so that when keyboardWasShown is called you can check to see if the currently selected element should be scrolled to.
I used self.activeField to store my currently selected element which is set when a element triggers an event(the event needs to be one of the first called and that is always called)
Then I check to see if the scrollToObjects contains activeField and if it does scroll the UIScrollView up and then back down when the activeField resignsFirstResponder
// Call this method somewhere in your view controller setup code.
- (void)registerForKeyboardNotifications
{
[[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self selector:#selector(keyboardWasShown:) name:UIKeyboardWillShowNotification object:nil];
[[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self selector:#selector(keyboardWillBeHidden:) name:UIKeyboardWillHideNotification object:nil];
}
// Called when the UIKeyboardDidShowNotification is sent.
- (void)keyboardWasShown:(NSNotification*)aNotification
{
NSDictionary* info = [aNotification userInfo];
CGSize kbSize = [[info objectForKey:UIKeyboardFrameEndUserInfoKey] CGRectValue].size;
UIEdgeInsets contentInsets = UIEdgeInsetsMake(0.0, 0.0, kbSize.height, 0.0);
self.scrollView.contentInset = contentInsets;
self.scrollView.scrollIndicatorInsets = contentInsets;
// If active text field is hidden by keyboard, scroll it so it's visible
// Your application might not need or want this behavior.
CGRect aRect = self.view.frame;
aRect.size.height -= kbSize.height;
// Wouldn't go true so used an array that contains text fields that need to be scrolled to
// if (!CGRectContainsPoint(aRect, self.activeField.frame.origin) ) {
// CGPoint scrollPoint = CGPointMake(0.0, self.activeField.frame.origin.y- kbSize.height);
// [self.scrollView setContentOffset:scrollPoint animated:YES];
// }
if ([self.scrollToObjects containsObject:self.activeField]) {
CGPoint scrollPoint = CGPointMake(0.0, self.activeField.frame.origin.y+ (self.activeField.frame.size.height*2)-kbSize.height);
[self.scrollView setContentOffset:scrollPoint animated:YES];
}
}
// Called when the UIKeyboardWillHideNotification is sent
- (void)keyboardWillBeHidden:(NSNotification*)aNotification
{
// self.scrollView.contentInset = UIEdgeInsetsZero;
[self.scrollView setContentOffset:CGPointMake(0.0, 0.0) animated:YES];
self.scrollView.scrollIndicatorInsets = UIEdgeInsetsZero;
}
A simpler solution would be to handle the UITextFieldDelegate methods below with following code or something similar to activation and deactivation of the object
-(void)textFieldDidBeginEditing:(UITextField *)textField
{
CGPoint scrollPoint = CGPointMake(0.0, textField.frame.origin.y);
[self.theScrollView setContentOffset:scrollPoint animated:YES];
}
-(void)textFieldDidEndEditing:(UITextField *)textField
{
[self.theScrollView setContentOffset:CGPointMake(0.0, 0.0) animated:YES];
self.theScrollView.scrollIndicatorInsets = UIEdgeInsetsZero;
}
I'd check your calculation for delta.
CGSize delta = CGSizeMake(self.frame.size.width - oldFrame.size.width,
self.frame.size.height - oldFrame.size.height);
My guess is oldFrame and self.frame might have the same dimensions.
I'm trying to think if there's anything else that could have been missed, like properly linking views to these objects or something in the interface editor?
The problem is in keyboardSizeChanged: - what you want to adjust is frame.origin.y, not frame.size.height. At least that is what I wanted it to do.
You can also try another library, it's called TPKeyboardAvoiding. It is working great, and is very easy to setup:
Add a UIScrollView into your view controller's xib
Set the scroll view's class to TPKeyboardAvoidingScrollView (still
in the xib, via the identity inspector)
Place all your controls within that scrollview
It also automatically hooks up "Next" buttons on the keyboard to switch through the text fields.
Is there some way to get UIKeyboard size programmatically. 216.0f height and 162.0f height in landscape.
