I am trying to get two separate hashes from one hash in the following code. s is a hash initialized with some value in advance. I want to multiply sheets[:bar] by 100.

Result: Not only in sheets[:bar] but also in sheets[:foo], my 20 first values are multiplied by 100. Do you know what is going on?
It's because .clone produces a shallow copy of your values in s.
Getting a deep copy of an object isn't something Ruby does by default but you would have to use the Marshal module.
cloned_hash = Marshal::load(Marshal.dump(s))
You could use Marshal to create a deep copy.
foo = Marshal.load(Marshal.dump(hash))
bar = Marshal.load(Marshal.dump(hash))

i'm trying (and actually succeded, but i don't understand how it works) to write a custom method for a hash in my model (I'm working on Ruby on Rails 6).
My hash looks like this
my_hash = {
[['name_1', 'slug_1']=>value_1],
[['name_2', 'slug_2']=>value_2],

[['name_2', 'slug_2']=>value_4]

So basically a hash of arrays. You notice that the 'keys' are arrays that repeat themselves many times, but with different values. What i want to achieve is to write a custom method that "joins" all the keys in only one key, which will have an array of values assigned, so basically i should be able to get:
my_hash = {
['name_1', 'slug_1']=>"values": [value_1, value_3],
['name_2', 'slug_2']=>"values": [value_2, value_4]
}
For that, I have this piece of code, which i use many times:
my_hash.inject({}) do |hash, record|
# each record has the following format => [["unit_name", "axis.slug"]=>average_value(float)]
keys, value = record
# now keys has ["unit_name", "axis.slug"] and values equals average_value
hash[keys.first] ||= {}
hash[keys.first][keys.last] = value.to_f

Since I use this many times, i wanted to write a custom method, so i did:

So I fiddled around and added 'self' to the name of the method, leaving:

I don't really understand why adding 'self' makes my code works, maybe anyone can shed some light? I tried using things like send() or instance_eval first, to just send the piece of code to the actual hash as a method (something like my_hash.instance_eval(my_method)) but I couldn't get it working.

Prepending self. to the method name makes it a class method instead of an instance method. If you are not sure of the difference, you should look it up as it is fundamental to properly defining and using classes and methods.
As a class method, you would use it as:
my_hash = MyHash.format_hash_data(my_hash)
Or if you're in scope of the class, simply my_hash = format_hash_data(my_hash), which is why it worked in your case with the self. prepended (class method definition).
If you want to define it as an instance method (a method that is defined for the instance), you would use it like so:
my_hash = my_hash.format_hash_data
And the definition would use the implicit self of the instance:
def format_hash_data
self.inject({}) do |hash, record|

I think your code can be boiled down to this:
def create_hash_array(campaign_votes)

There's multiple problems here, many to do with getting all tangled up in the process. You initialize the element of the target_hash structure only on the 0 index position, yet each campaign_vote could have different content_id values, meaning you're missing out on those.
This approach creates a single auto-generating Hash that will populate keys with counter hashes, that is hashes defaulting to 0. That means you can always navigate them and += 1 will work because of the default.
This approach is pretty common in Ruby, especially Hash.new(0), which is super handy for doing simple counters of arbitrary objects.
This seems ludicrously simple but I cannot figure out how to convert a hash-string to a hash.
When I do a Answer.find_by_sql I get a string like this
deepthought = "\"answertolife\"=>\"42\""
But I cannot figure out how to turn that into a hash.
I have tried:

Rails4 supports hstore out of the box so I'd probably handle the string casting the same way Rails4 does it. If you look inside the Rails4 PostgreSQL-specific casting code, you'll find string_to_hstore:

Stash that somewhere convenient (probably somewhere in lib/) and send your hstore strings through that string_to_hstore to unpack them into Hashes.

I am trying to use a time_select to input a time into a model that will then perform some calculations.
the time_select helper prepares the params that is return so that it can be used in a multi-parameter assignment to an Active Record object.
Something like the following
Parameters: {"commit"=>"Calculate", "authenticity_token"=>"eQ/wixLHfrboPd/Ol5IkhQ4lENpt9vc4j0PcIw0Iy/M=", "calculator"=>{"time(2i)"=>"6", "time(3i)"=>"10", "time(4i)"=>"17", "time(5i)"=>"15", "time(1i)"=>"2009"}}
My question is, what is the best way to use this format in a non-active record model. Also on a side note. What is the meaning of the (5i), (4i) etc.? (Other than the obvious reason to distinguish the different time values, basically why it was named this way)

You can create a method in the non active record model as follows
# This will return a Time object from provided hash

You can then call the method from the controller action as follows
time_object = YourModel.parse_calculator_time(params[:calculator])
It may not be the best solution, but it is simple to use.

The letter after the number stands for the type to which you wish it to be cast. In this case, integer. It could also be f for float or s for string.
I just did this myself and the easiest way that I could find was to basically copy/paste the Rails code into my base module (or abstract object).
I copied the following functions verbatim from ActiveRecord::Base

What's the most elegant way to select out objects in an array that are unique with respect to one or more attributes?
These objects are stored in ActiveRecord so using AR's methods would be fine too.
Use Array#uniq with a block:
#photos = #photos.uniq { |p| p.album_id }
Add the uniq_by method to Array in your project. It works by analogy with sort_by. So uniq_by is to uniq as sort_by is to sort. Usage:
uniq_array = my_array.uniq_by {|obj| obj.id}
The implementation:
class Array
def uniq_by(&blk)
transforms = []
self.select do |el|
should_keep = !transforms.include?(t=blk[el])
transforms << t
should_keep
end

Note that it returns a new array rather than modifying your current one in place. We haven't written a uniq_by! method but it should be easy enough if you wanted to.
EDIT: Tribalvibes points out that that implementation is O(n^2). Better would be something like (untested)...

You can use this trick to select unique by several attributes elements from array:

I had originally suggested using the select method on Array. To wit:
[1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7].select{|e| e%2 == 0}
gives us [2,4,6] back.
But if you want the first such object, use detect.
[1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7].detect{|e| e>3} gives us 4.
I'm not sure what you're going for here, though.
I like jmah's use of a Hash to enforce uniqueness. Here's a couple more ways to skin that cat:
objs.inject({}) {|h,e| h[e.attr]=e; h}.values
That's a nice 1-liner, but I suspect this might be a little faster:
h = {}
objs.each {|e| h[e.attr]=e}
h.values
Use Array#uniq with a block:
objects.uniq {|obj| obj.attribute}
Or a more concise approach:
objects.uniq(&:attribute)
The most elegant way I have found is a spin-off using Array#uniq with a block
enumerable_collection.uniq(&:property)
…it reads better too!
If I understand your question correctly, I've tackled this problem using the quasi-hacky approach of comparing the Marshaled objects to determine if any attributes vary. The inject at the end of the following code would be an example:

You can use a hash, which contains only one value for each key:
Hash[*recs.map{|ar| [ar[attr],ar]}.flatten].values
Rails also has a #uniq_by method.

I like jmah and Head's answers. But do they preserve array order? They might in later versions of ruby since there have been some hash insertion-order-preserving requirements written into the language specification, but here's a similar solution that I like to use that preserves order regardless.

Note that in case of custom objects, we need to override eql? and hash methods
