Need advice, how to write complex query in Ruby.
Query in PHP project:

Do you mean Ruby with ActiveRecord? Are you using ActiveRecord and/or Rails? #find_by_sql is a method that exists within ActiveRecord. Also it seems like the user table isn't really needed in this query, but maybe you left something out? Either way, I'll included it in my examples. This query would work if you haven't set up your relationships right:
users_trustees = Trustee.
select('trustees.*, ui.image').
joins('LEFT OUTER JOIN users u ON u.id = trustees.trustees_id').
joins('LEFT OUTER JOIN user_info ui ON ui.user_id = t.trustees_id').
where(user_id: user_id, trustee_status: 'pending').
order('t.created DESC')
Also, be aware of a few things with this solution:
I have not found a super elegant way to get the columns from the join tables out of the ActiveRecord objects that get returned. You can access them by users_trustees.each { |u| u['image'] }
This query isn't really THAT complex and ActiveRecord relationships make it much easier to understand and maintain.
I'm assuming you're using a legacy database and that's why your columns are named this way. If I'm wrong and you created these tables for this app, then your life would be much easier (and conventional) with your primary keys being called id and your timestamps being called created_at and updated_at.
Option 2 (Better)
If you set up your ActiveRecord relationships and classes properly, then this query is much easier:

Your "query" can now be ActiveRecord goodness if performance isn't paramount. The Ruby convention is readability first, reorganizing code later if stuff starts to scale.
Let's say you want to get a trustee's image:
trustee = Trustee.where(trustees_id: 5).first
if trustee
image = trustee.user_info.image
..
end
Or if you want to get all trustee's images:
Trustee.all.collect { |t| t.user_info.try(:image) } # using a #try in case user_info is nil
Option 3 (Best)
It seems like trustee is just a special-case user of some sort. You can use STI if you don't mind restructuring you tables to simplify even further.

Yes, find_by_sql will work, you can try this also:
Trustee.connection.execute('...')
or for generic queries:
ActiveRecord::Base.connection.execute('...')

I've been digging around for this for awhile... I can't find a graceful solution. I have loans and loans has_many :decisions. decisions has an attribute that I care about, called risk_rating.
I'd like to sort loans based on the most recent decision (based on created_at, per usual), but by the risk_rating.
Loan.includes(:decisions).references(:decisions).order('decisions.risk_rating DESC') doesn't work...
I want loans... sorted by their most recent decision's risk_rating. This seems like it should be easier than it is.
I'm currently doing this outside of the database like this, but it's chewing up time and memory:

x.decisions.last.try(:risk_rating).to_f <=> y.decisions.last.try(:risk_rating).to_f
end

This doesn't sort, just provides the latest decision for each loan. Throwing an order that references access_codes messes things up because of the table aliasing. I don't have the time to work that kink out now, but I bet you can figure it out if you check out some of the great resources on Arel and how to use it with ActiveRecord. I really enjoy this one.
At first let's write sql-query which will select necessary data. SO contains a question which may helps here: Select most recent row with GROUP BY in MySQL. My best version:

I'm quite new to RoR and creating a student project for a course I'm taking. I'm wanting to construct a type of query we didn't cover in the course and which I know I could do in a snap in .NET and SQL. I'm having a heck of a time though getting it implemented the Ruby way.
What I'd like to do: Display a list on a user's page of all "posts" by that user's friends.
"Posts" are found in both a questions table and in a blurbs table that users contribute to. I'd like to UNION these two into a single recordset to sort by updated_at DESC.
The table column names are not the same however, and this is my sticking point since other successful answers I've seen have hinged on column names being the same between the two.
In SQL I'd write something like (emphasis on like):

has_many :friendships
has_many :friends, through: :friendships
has_many :questions

And the Question and Blurb models both have belongs_to :user
In the view I'd like to display the contents of the 'UserPost' column and the 'Author'. I'm sure this is possible, I'm just too new still to ActiveRecord and how statements are formed. Happy to have some input or review any relevant links that speak to this specifically!
Final Solution
Hopefully this will assist others in the future with Ruby UNION questions. Thanks to #Plamena's input the final implementation ended up as:

Currently Active Record lacks union support. You can use SQL:

Then you can iterate the result:
posts.each do |post|

Your best way to do this is to just use the power of Rails
If you want all of something belonging to a user's friend:
current_user.friends.find(id_of_friend).first.questions
This would get all of the questions from a certain friend.
Now, it seems that you have writings in multiple places (this is hard to visualise without your providing a model of how writings is connected to everywhere else). Can you provide this?

How do I get all the users who do not have a car?

I was doing the following:
all.select {|user| not user.car }
That worked perfect until my database of users and cars got too big and now I get strange errors, especially when I try and sort the result. I need to do the filtering in the query and the ordering as well as part of the query.
UPDATE: What I did was the following:
where('id not in (?)', Car.pluck(:user_id)).order('first_name, last_name, middle_name')
It's fairly slow as Rails has to grab all the user_ids from the cars table and then issue a giant query. I know I can do a sub-query in SQL, but there must be a better Rails/ActiveRecord way.
UPDATE 2: I now have a noticeably more efficient query:
includes(:car).where(cars: {id: nil})
The answer I accepted below has joins with a SQL string instead of includes. I don't know if includes is more inefficient because it stores the nil data in Ruby objects whereas joins might not? I like not using strings...
One way is to use a left join from the users table to the cars table and only take user entries that don't have any corresponding values in the cars table, this looks like:
User.select('users.*').joins('LEFT JOIN cars ON users.id = cars.user_id').where('cars.id IS NULL')
Most of the work that needs to be done here is SQL. Try this:
User.joins("LEFT OUTER JOIN cars ON users.id = cars.user_id").where("cars.id IS NULL")
It is incredibly inefficient to do this with ruby, as you appear to be trying to do.
You can throw an order on there too:
User.
joins("LEFT OUTER JOIN cars ON users.id = cars.user_id").
where("cars.id IS NULL").
order(:first_name, :last_name, :middle_name)
You can make this a scope on your User model so you only have one place to deal with it:

This way you can do:
User.without_cars
In your controller or another method, or even chain the scope:
User.without_cars.where("users.birthday > ?", 18.years.ago)
to find users without cars that are under 18 years old (arbitrary example, but you get the idea). My point is, this kind of thing should always be made into a scope, so it can be chained with other scopes :) Arel is awesome that way.
I've got a really complicated query (which finds bus connections between two towns) and I haven't got any idea how to access data from joins (I'd like to know at which stop does the connection start and at which does it end). Is it possible to access this data using ActiveRecord?

You need to add sth like:
your_query.select('courses.*, start_stopi.id as start_stop_id, end_stopi.id as end_stop_id)
and then you can access it by calling start_stop_id and end_stop_id on course object.
However you should probably use association for this kind of operations. Could you show us you models?
Check your log for the output of this query, you should find that it starts with select courses.* - therefore it will not bring through data from the included tables.
You can add some select other_table.some_column statements to your query, but this isn't the rails way.
I would suggest you separate your scope into the relevant models - put scopes in the stop_times model (and others) so that you can call the scopes on the object you actually want to get data from.
When you're constructing custom SQL of that complexity I think you've taken the Rails-way of doing things too far. You're using practically no activerecord association information to construct it, and you've built a programming construct that is horribly ugly and difficult to read.
I'd advise that you rewrite it as well formatted SQL

Now it could be that you can improve your models and associations to the point where this level of complexity is not required (eg. the associations between courses, stop_times (start) and stop_times (end) could probably be encapsulated in activerecord pretty well, but at the moment you seem to be falling between the pure SQL and the pure activerecord approaches in a very uncomfortable way.
I have a has_one condition that I'm trying to access but am having a little trouble
Solicitation belongs_to :lead
Lead has_many :solicitations
My first statement grabs all solicitations for a user
#solicitations = current_user.solicitations.includes(:lead)
I can already access the attribute lead.case_type and could just cycle through the relation and put them in their places manually, but I figure their is an easier way.
What I am trying to do is something similar to
#solicitations.where("lead.case_type = ?", "Civil")
I have tried these and receive an unknown column error lead.case_type

The problem is that you are using lead.case_type, but (if you're following Rails' conventions) your table name is leads. This should work:
#solicitations = current_user.solicitations.includes(:lead).where("leads.case_type = ?", "Civil")
You could also use joins for that:
#solicitations = current_user.solicitations.joins(:lead).where("leads.case_type = ?", "Civil")
includes does an outer join, whereas joins does an inner join. Since you're querying the joined table an inner join would be better here.
In where you always have to use the table name (plural), but in includes and joins it depends on the relationship. In this case solicitation belongs to lead, so you have to use :lead (singular). It's a bit confusing, but I hope this clears it up for you.
